I am using the new Sprint radio 2.42.01.04.27 along with Damagecontrol v2.08 ROM and having issues with my battery life especially where I work! I have very poor signal at work and the battery seems to drain faster than it used to with the earlier version of the radio. But where I live I have full signal and the battery seems to hold well!!!
I just want to make sure it is not something I am assuming or if there is something I can do to keep the same radio and improve the batter life???
Anyone else on here experience similar issues please feel free to share.
Thank you!
Edit: I just realized I should have posted in Q&A section, is there a way I can change it?
probably because where you work the signal is low( like you said) and the radio looks for the HOME network, and because it keeps going and going, and switching from ROaming to HOME , this will eat your battery fast.
I have the same problem
I have this problem too. It annoys the crap out of me
I have this same problem. -99 and lower dbm at work. What I do is put it in airplane mode unless I need to make a call. If that's not a viable option, I would suggest getting an extra charger. But I even had this problem when my phone was still stock, so it's not ROM specific.
You could also try differents radio from this page. http://geekfor.me/category/radio/
This has always been an issue for me for just about all of the phones I have owned for the past decade. Low/weak signal causes your phone to constantly try to get a better signal, which in turns eats your battery. Don't think this has anything to do with the radio version whatsoever.

I believe if a Radio increases your signal...that means you get better signal in places where before you could not, which means less roaming right?
just my 2cents
So far none of the 2.1 radios are that great on my hero. I have since gone back to the 1.5 stock radio and all seems really good.

I have the same issue at my house I would recomend that you turn off the mobile network while your at work unless you need it. I keep a toggle on my primary screen for easy on and off. It helps my battery last when I have no need for the mobile data I just turn it off but it still allows you to make and receive calls and will help improve your battery life. Hope that helps you out.
Forgive me for my noobiness. I searched on wikipedia and other places and isn't a lower -dBm better than a higher -dBM?
So -62dBM is better than -100dBm or am I wrong here?
Thanks for not flaming!

Lower is better. I stole this from a non android phone related blog but I'm sure it applies to all phones:
Full Signal:-70 or lower
Optimal Signal:-70 to -75
Fair Signal:-75 to -85
Poor Signal: -85 or higher
The values may not directly reflect the quality referenced but it clearly shows that you want a lower -dbm.

That's correct numbers closer to 0 are better therefore -62 is better than -100
Also for future reference. Every radio will give every person in a different location different signal strength. Duh I know they are obviously on different towers. What I mean is, if i switch radios, one will give me a better strength compared to another. For some the original 1.5 radio worked best, for others (like myself) a 2.1 radio worked better. Its really a trial and error thing. But be careful, flashing radios is the one thing that will brick your phone if not done right.
One question the OP could of asked is.. What radio does someone in "his location" use and get a better signal with?
Dang... I currently have -48dBm... but still not at full bars... At work though, at home I think I get -90dBm and about a bar or none at all...
A "Roam Only" option might help here. Is there such an app for Android 2.1 yet? There was one for Blackberrys and it works a charm in weak signal areas.
(When used, your phone will roam on the Verizon network only. The data is slower when roaming, but the battery draining issue is solved.)

yup i know there is a thread on radio but mine will focus on GPS performance bro
IMO 08 is the best for GPS.
I do agree : 1.25.00.08 for me too
.08 is certainly the fastest cold start. but i dont know if that makes it the best. i do use it tho.

seems most accurate too (South UK)
how about anyone from asia?or even singapore?
i'm on 07 and i get a fix wthin 5-7 seconds with gpscycle 2
although at times gpscycle fails to get a fix, but that can be dealt with by soft resetting the fone....i think its some s/w problem....seems like the s/w cant get to open the com port
so far i have test .05,.07 and.08....05 seems the most accurate but fixing takes up to 1min sometime longer...

to be honest, if you use your phone more than a couple of times a day (like most people), then the battery is ****e no matter which radio! oooo and extra 10 mins!
i'm getting the 3000 mAh battery when its out at the end of the month...
over 3x the capacity

On a serious note tho', You say your GPS is no problem and the battery life is ****e, mine has reasonable battery life (although if I'm using GPS it's either plugged into the car or I'm using GPS Cycle Computer which turns off the backlight) and GPS isn't anything like as good as the Artemis?
This device seems much more variable in quality than my previous O2/HTC ones, even the camera quality varies - weeiiirrdd

yeh, it depends on if you have a original HTC, a T-Mobile... etc etc...
i think a lot depends on ROMs/Radios as well.
Different radios work better/worse for differing regions and providors.....I am using 25.07 (and have tried a few!) as its best for Scotland.....would suggest that you follow what your regional collegues are using as a starting point, and then flash and change (very easy!!) for comparison
Of course then post back to share your results
the latest radio b14 from dutty is amazing!!!i get a fix from cold start in less than 15sec!!!Anyone else have good things to say about tis radio??
My out-of-the-box radio version is 1.02.25.19.
Is this any good? I'm getting fast fixes but lag after 5mins of use (feels like a memory problem with TT7 version 7.450 b9030). Igo8 is just always off by 20M (version 5400).
Heya all ! I'm a little pissed at my phone , had to wait 5 hours in a line yesterday to get my parking card. My phone had a no signal for the entire time while other students blackberries and iphones had full signal
i have 4 bars on my lg shine and some older phone
i had 1 bar on my g1 and now 2 bars after sanding the antenna ( yes i'm crazy uh )
So anyone know any other trick to boost this wonderful phone antenna reception ?
( I'm using a rogers rooted phone )
thx in advance
Did you update your radio?
"sanding the antenna"
Dude, not sure you can blame the phone here. Good luck, hope you can get it working better.
HELP!!!
Basically I have the same issue. I get like a phantom signal on my phone in my office so I know it works but I would like to increase the phones signal reception so that I can get that signal and keep it. I saw someone mentioned updating the radio how is that possible?(I just got my phone two weeks ago I have read a little on jailbreaking buy haven't tried it because I saw no huge reason to do so.) Also is there any other way, other than updating the radio? (And no I cannot get a repeater in my office). Thank You So Much.
See my sig for the download of the newest radio.
PS: It's called rooting, not jailbreaking.

Heres my problem... I can't get SH!T for help on this site, maybe because it's so overloaded, or maybe some a$$hole said dont help this person.... IDK
All I know is I ask a question and they RARELY get answered.... I'm at the point I'LL ****1N PAY U TO ANSWER MY QUESTION, I'VE BEEN ASKING THE SAME [email protected] QUESTION LONG ENOUGH...
I need radio help. I'm rooted, I run all the ROMs, always Froyo based.... I've never updated my radio from what it came with.... I have radio 32.26.00.24H_4.04.00.03_2
I haven't updated because I don't want to kill my AT&T 3g.... I've read that the TMo Froyo radio will kill my AT&T 3G so thats why I left my radio alone.... But now I'm reading that the newer radios are compatible either way, so I want to upgrade it.
I know I can go back if it does kill my 850/1900, but I would rather someone to just please just recommend me a radio as well as link, I'll adb it myself...
I need a radio for best 3G and battery life would be a plus, but 3G is more important, in my area I drop to edge frequently...
THE PERSON WHO HELPS ME WILL RECEIVE $10 US DOLLARS VIA PAYPAL
Thanks,
Brian
Well, I don't want your money but you should be fine flashing this new radio (32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04). Some people say they get improved battery life and some don't. Most seem to get better reception.

There is where you will get the newest radio image, it is identical to the one found in the Desire 2.2 update. You do not have to update HBOOT if you do not want to, though I could be wrong on that one, though I didn't have to when I did.
If you do not want this version of the radio as some people have trouble with it you can flash the radio that was uploaded by enomther:

The ROM shouldn't affect your reception to my knowledge. You may have different APNs set and that could cause issues but even that is a stretch.

you should not see any major difference between the two radios when it comes to battery life. i've been using 5.08 since it came out, i have a much more stable signal and battery life is the same for me.
you can also downgrade ur radio whenever you want... just flash the old radio through recovery... you'll be ok
Fastboot is, IMO, the most reliable way to flash a radio. I would rather not leave a brickable upgrade/downgrade up to a script, but that's just my paranoia kicking in. lol.

I know, right?
I don't upload and don't download much either; I'd leave it on Edge if I didn't want to be able to talk and use data, so this is just what I needed.
Awesome link!!!! Thanks! Much better battery life now!

Wow this is great! My DL and UL speeds with 3G are almost the exact same or close to the speeds of HSPA, with less battery drain!! Awesome. 3G is just strong in my area, waaaaaay better signal. Thanks again.
Looking at how my phone changes from "H" to "3G", it seems to do it intelligently. When nothing that requires data is done on the phone, such as scrolling through homescreens or being in your app drawer, 3G is used. When data is needed, such as loading web pages or downloading "H" is used. With this auto switching, it seems like the phone does try to optimize battery life between HSPA and 3G so I don't think this fix is really that necessary.
The only thing I noticed is that is when using gTalk, it switches between HSPA and 3G depending on if a message is being sent or if the phone is stationary. If I send a message, "H" comes on and when I don't, it's "3G". If changing between HSPA and 3G does drain battery, then this could be a source of battery drain if you send small messages quickly (how one would chat) back and forth.
Can anyone chime if it consumes battery when it changes between 3G and H?
It doesn't consume more when switching, but HSPA consumes a lot more than 3G. I was previously running HSPA all the time and now just 3G. I did this trick yesterday and I am seeing very good results already.
Bumping this bcuz this is really a battery saver!!!!

Indeed. I'd remembered DG mentioning hspa as a big battery drainer. So when I stumbled on to this little app I was def interested

I believe it's because the ATT baseband version has been optimized to work with the ATT towers.
For sweets and giggles I flashed this on my phone running CM7 Pre Beta 4 on AT&T and I am getting .5mbps faster download and upload all around.
*NOTE*
Seeing as how we all live in different areas of the world everyone's results are going to differ tremendously. What works for me might be sweeter for someone else. So this is just a little word to the wise.
I am NOT telling anyone to flash this on their phone. I am simply saying IF you decide to flash it, you'll most likely get way different results than I did.
It's not my fault nor the guy who made this thread if you sweet your sweet up

I haven't done extensive testing but when I first flashed this the reception at home was MUCH improved. Never ran any speed tests to get numbers.
Here at work where signal is quite poor due to radio equipment my signal is also quite a lot better. Speed tests were great from a relatively dead zone in the office too. Awesome!
I'm using a Bell Atrix on the Rogers network.

2 questions, how is your phone's temperature? Specially when playing games or been using the phone for long time or multi tasking?
and if I didn't want to use it after flashing it how can I undo it?
Thx

The temperature's been fine but I haven't been paying a close eye. If it were anything out of the ordinary I'd pick up on it though.
You can flash a different radio if this isn't working out. N_01.11.30P is fantastic as well, but I think this may edge it out. If I'm not mistaken it sounds like the voice quality of calls have improved by quite a bit.

I just flashed this radio after i posted my question. Reception was never an issue for me anyways, so don't know if it has changed. I played HD game for a bit and same result as others, my phone's temp went up to 40 C in less than 10 minutes. I have not seen any radio which can fix this stupid heating problem. With Stock Froyo, never had to worry about temperature issue at all, ever since I have flashed different ROMS and kernels and radios, I haven't found any which is as good as the stock bell froyo.
Voice quality seems clearer and download speed seems a lil higher though.
I just got off the phone with my wife and this call quality has definite, definitely improved.
I talked to her at work in a relative dead zone and the call was quite clear as well. Thanks for sharing this radio!!
