Good times, thanks for this. I remember seeing something about it but could never find the thread.
How did this never get posted before lol? November is a long time for us to not realize a cross-platform item.

I know, right?
I don't upload and don't download much either; I'd leave it on Edge if I didn't want to be able to talk and use data, so this is just what I needed.
Awesome link!!!! Thanks! Much better battery life now!

Wow this is great! My DL and UL speeds with 3G are almost the exact same or close to the speeds of HSPA, with less battery drain!! Awesome. 3G is just strong in my area, waaaaaay better signal. Thanks again.
Looking at how my phone changes from "H" to "3G", it seems to do it intelligently. When nothing that requires data is done on the phone, such as scrolling through homescreens or being in your app drawer, 3G is used. When data is needed, such as loading web pages or downloading "H" is used. With this auto switching, it seems like the phone does try to optimize battery life between HSPA and 3G so I don't think this fix is really that necessary.
The only thing I noticed is that is when using gTalk, it switches between HSPA and 3G depending on if a message is being sent or if the phone is stationary. If I send a message, "H" comes on and when I don't, it's "3G". If changing between HSPA and 3G does drain battery, then this could be a source of battery drain if you send small messages quickly (how one would chat) back and forth.
Can anyone chime if it consumes battery when it changes between 3G and H?
It doesn't consume more when switching, but HSPA consumes a lot more than 3G. I was previously running HSPA all the time and now just 3G. I did this trick yesterday and I am seeing very good results already.
Bumping this bcuz this is really a battery saver!!!!

Indeed. I'd remembered DG mentioning hspa as a big battery drainer. So when I stumbled on to this little app I was def interested
I am def getting much better battery with the HSPA.

Hey guys. kind of funny to wake up and know that i was right about the whole 4g working on a 3g device. Either you guys just want to believe it sooo bad that it clouded your judgments and made you assume you had 4g? Funny thing is, would you expect to have 3g on your old Nokia 3200. I doubt it. Same theory. Cannot, and will never be able to carry a 4g signal, on a non 4g device. EVER. Lol. Good one on their part, but seeing as there such "big bad Dev's" they shouldn't have done that to the community like that. I mean people follow you guys habitually, and it could have messed their phones up. Just saying. Anyways, here are some of my favorites from the madness. Peoples personal experiences with the "super-d-2G-day". Not April fools. BenD-fools day.

Cant wait to get home and test this on a tower with less traffic" - Classic. Megaspeeds with 2g, naaaa.
2.)Proxin wrote - "You must install adb to have the proper permissions set for your hardware (usually your hardware only supports 3g/edge speeds for data, but this patches the connection output so that it tells the phone to allow 4G)." - Ahhh, the scientific approach to believing in something false.
3.)Jook11 said - "eah, I had a 4G symbol for a few minutes when I flashed this but speed test looked more like EDGE. anyway the 4G icon went back to 3G before long and I havent seen it again." - A firm believer due to the icons. Haa.
4.)BBuchacher said - "the speed is not up to 4g or sometimes its worse than 3g, but you ARE accessing a 4g network, the speeds will be improved as we work more on the code" - Adding fuel to the fast spreading fire.
5.)Cal-El wrote - "I only have the 3G icon but man my downloads and page loading are really flying and not placebo maybe its faster but really noticable. I belive it. " - This has to be the best one. SMH. "I believe it"

I wasn't referring to you specifically - there were like 4 or 5 people who tried the full thing
I am using the new Sprint radio 2.42.01.04.27 along with Damagecontrol v2.08 ROM and having issues with my battery life especially where I work! I have very poor signal at work and the battery seems to drain faster than it used to with the earlier version of the radio. But where I live I have full signal and the battery seems to hold well!!!
I just want to make sure it is not something I am assuming or if there is something I can do to keep the same radio and improve the batter life???
Anyone else on here experience similar issues please feel free to share.
Thank you!
Edit: I just realized I should have posted in Q&A section, is there a way I can change it?
probably because where you work the signal is low( like you said) and the radio looks for the HOME network, and because it keeps going and going, and switching from ROaming to HOME , this will eat your battery fast.
I have the same problem
I have this problem too. It annoys the crap out of me
I have this same problem. -99 and lower dbm at work. What I do is put it in airplane mode unless I need to make a call. If that's not a viable option, I would suggest getting an extra charger. But I even had this problem when my phone was still stock, so it's not ROM specific.
You could also try differents radio from this page. http://geekfor.me/category/radio/
This has always been an issue for me for just about all of the phones I have owned for the past decade. Low/weak signal causes your phone to constantly try to get a better signal, which in turns eats your battery. Don't think this has anything to do with the radio version whatsoever.

I believe if a Radio increases your signal...that means you get better signal in places where before you could not, which means less roaming right?
just my 2cents
So far none of the 2.1 radios are that great on my hero. I have since gone back to the 1.5 stock radio and all seems really good.

So you are saying 1.5 stock radio if not improved at least didn't diminish your radio as quicker?

I have the same issue at my house I would recomend that you turn off the mobile network while your at work unless you need it. I keep a toggle on my primary screen for easy on and off. It helps my battery last when I have no need for the mobile data I just turn it off but it still allows you to make and receive calls and will help improve your battery life. Hope that helps you out.
Forgive me for my noobiness. I searched on wikipedia and other places and isn't a lower -dBm better than a higher -dBM?
So -62dBM is better than -100dBm or am I wrong here?
Thanks for not flaming!

Lower is better. I stole this from a non android phone related blog but I'm sure it applies to all phones:
Full Signal:-70 or lower
Optimal Signal:-70 to -75
Fair Signal:-75 to -85
Poor Signal: -85 or higher
The values may not directly reflect the quality referenced but it clearly shows that you want a lower -dbm.

That's correct numbers closer to 0 are better therefore -62 is better than -100
Also for future reference. Every radio will give every person in a different location different signal strength. Duh I know they are obviously on different towers. What I mean is, if i switch radios, one will give me a better strength compared to another. For some the original 1.5 radio worked best, for others (like myself) a 2.1 radio worked better. Its really a trial and error thing. But be careful, flashing radios is the one thing that will brick your phone if not done right.
One question the OP could of asked is.. What radio does someone in "his location" use and get a better signal with?
Dang... I currently have -48dBm... but still not at full bars... At work though, at home I think I get -90dBm and about a bar or none at all...
A "Roam Only" option might help here. Is there such an app for Android 2.1 yet? There was one for Blackberrys and it works a charm in weak signal areas.
(When used, your phone will roam on the Verizon network only. The data is slower when roaming, but the battery draining issue is solved.)

Thanks! That's what I thought, but the in one of the posts it implied that larger was better, so I just wanted to clarify.
Thread Moved to Q&A as per OP's request.
Heya Folks,
I followed the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...43&postcount=1 and applied them to the services.jar from the latest build of MIUI.
See the attached flashable .zip file. I strongly suggest making a nandroid backup due to this being my first attempt at doing this. It booted just fine on my device.
Let me know if it works!

I think a bit of clarity is needed here. This mod will only stop Verizon from slowing down your data speeds.
It will NOT help you avoid overage charges.
For example let's say you're on a 250mb a month plan. This mod only ensures that you will get 250mb at unrestrcited speeds. Going over 250mb will still result in an overage charge.
Also, the reason people keep referring to 5gb on their "unlimited" plan is because Verizon starts to throttle data speeds after 5gb of data. That doesn't mean you get charged more, Verizon just slows you down. This mod will prevent that, and only that.
I hope that clears things up.

Heya,
Only way to test would be to run a speedtest.net over your 3g connection before and after flashing. My 3G sucks here so I can't really test it. I followed it step by step going off of the instructions however.
Just curious if anyone tested this? I know the zip works just curious if anyone has played around with it. My 3g sucks where I live so I feel it isn't an accurate test here

I don't think you will notice a difference, I thought this mod pretty disabled throttling after you use 5GB of data in a month
Sent from your mom's phone
Can't speak for the MIUI, but SR 3.5 showed significant improvements.
Guess it doesn't hurt to give it a shot.
So can this be flashed to any rom? I have a droid x and I am using the Liberty rom.
No, it is ROM specific.
I tried this patch on 1.1.7 N1 services.jar and got a FC in settings>system>Mobile Network settings. Does a similar thing happen on 12.24 Dinc?
No, this particular thread only worked for 12.24 for the incredible...

No, because there is no difference and flashing this on any rom does nothing but break your one settings menu as mentioned.
As has been previously stated this feature is not actively used by verizon, if it was used you would see a notification icon in regards to it when it is enabled as that is part of the code.
This feature was built by google as an option for carriers should a large majority of customers use android devices, but the bottom line is if vzw wants to throttle your data they do it at the account/network level. Not on your device. Any improvement people report from making this change is a complete placebo / fluke or just a fluctuation in their signal quality / network congestion at the time.
YES, I did search for this before i posted. Found no one with this issue:
Has anyone been having slower data speeds since upgrading? I was most likly the very first person to put this one my fone at 10am when it when live...that said, ever since then, using the Speedtest app, i have YET to get over 2mbs DOWNLINK speed.
In fact, both Up and Downlink speed have been completly SUB-megabit. If i ran it 50 times from the day It was released till now, there have been only 2 times where i have gotten 1+ megabits.
I dont live in a bad area(for the most part); just in Springfield MO. Proir to 2.2 my speeds ranged from 3 ish downlink and around 1megabit uplink....not terribly fast by any means but now, its a helluva lot more annoying...
Any opinions, help, advice, criticisms, or the like, from anyone??

Were you running stock before or were you running a custom ROM/kernel/modem? The modem is the most likely culprit. I personally am not running the KB1 update that AT&T pushed out but I have seen some posts here and there with people mentioning a drop in data speeds. Is HSPA running on your phone when you are testing?
Everything was stock proir to me updating, nothing at all custom. I was rooted and had the OneClickLagfix 2.0 installed (which i fully removed before updating). But that was it..
Yes HSPA was on. I used one of the codes(well, an app that has a whole list of the codes) ud use in the dialer to check. Both "HSUPA" and "HSDPA" had a "[1]" next to it, so i left the option to leave it "on", alone so i wouldnt mess up anything. My speeds have ben horrible; any update i have takes way too long, and im still getting sub-mega bit speeds even as we speak...i may email, or go to the store to see what could be up..
I recently flashed the adrenaline shot with the other zip that helps the ram at the same time then right after I flashed ice cream kangwich and I have really crappy service. I'm in my house here I usually have 1-2 bars and it keeps going between 0-1 bars constantly. I was wondering if any of the zips I just flashed could have messed with my signal at all? My suggestion would be to get rid of the scripts. A lot of people like these scripts but it's been my experience and a lot of others that these do nothing but cause issues. I used to use scripts but quickly found out that my phone performs a ton better without them. Some stuff like the 3G tweaks and some build.prop tweaks are ok but it really seems like these other scripts are just trouble and in some cases, don't even make a difference.

I definitely agree with this, I was running V6 (ik it is built in but was running a new version) and it seemed great at first then seemed to bog the system down. I uninstalled and it still didnt seem right, just wiped cache and reflashed GV and seems to run great so far.
Probably has nothing to do with your situation but I have had less bars/LTE ever since the most recent LTE/Data outtage. I think something blew in a tower near me but that is probably a local issue.
Thanks for all your help guys.. Ive been letting it go for a few days.. The only place it seems to be noticabley worse is in my girlfriends house. I dont really notice it being less bars any other place but I do live in pittsburgh whether that may be close enough to cleveland or not who knows.
