[Q] Slower data speeds with Stock Captivate 2.2?? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

YES, I did search for this before i posted. Found no one with this issue:
Has anyone been having slower data speeds since upgrading? I was most likly the very first person to put this one my fone at 10am when it when live...that said, ever since then, using the Speedtest app, i have YET to get over 2mbs DOWNLINK speed.
In fact, both Up and Downlink speed have been completly SUB-megabit. If i ran it 50 times from the day It was released till now, there have been only 2 times where i have gotten 1+ megabits.
I dont live in a bad area(for the most part); just in Springfield MO. Proir to 2.2 my speeds ranged from 3 ish downlink and around 1megabit uplink....not terribly fast by any means but now, its a helluva lot more annoying...
Any opinions, help, advice, criticisms, or the like, from anyone??

Were you running stock before or were you running a custom ROM/kernel/modem? The modem is the most likely culprit. I personally am not running the KB1 update that AT&T pushed out but I have seen some posts here and there with people mentioning a drop in data speeds. Is HSPA running on your phone when you are testing?

Everything was stock proir to me updating, nothing at all custom. I was rooted and had the OneClickLagfix 2.0 installed (which i fully removed before updating). But that was it..
Yes HSPA was on. I used one of the codes(well, an app that has a whole list of the codes) ud use in the dialer to check. Both "HSUPA" and "HSDPA" had a "[1]" next to it, so i left the option to leave it "on", alone so i wouldnt mess up anything. My speeds have ben horrible; any update i have takes way too long, and im still getting sub-mega bit speeds even as we speak...i may email, or go to the store to see what could be up..

It's kilobits.. that score is under 2meg.
yea i did a retest using a different server. theres a newer screenshot up. 2megs!!
lol...if it was 7.2..... it would say 7.2 on that speed test lol
and the link you updated is not up
damnit image shack!!
ok try now. new link
7.2 isnt the transfer rate. its the network size. transfer rate will never be at 7megs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
hmm... 7meg transfer rates?? im sooo out of date. maybe tmobile capped it???
ok just used mobilespeedtest.com and did the 3meg test and resulted with 4082kbps. im not liking this speedtest.net app.
use xtreme labs speedtest
and 7.2 transfer rates are possible but due to network traffic, it will probably be much less.
what did you get before?

mobilespeedtest has alrdy been proven to be false and misleading.
and 2meg is actaully pretty normal depending on ur area.

the xtreme app will only work once then i have to reboot. but with it i do get 400-500kbps down. same as when 3g first rolled out. signal stregth at my house is not all that good. so to see 2megs down after my 3g signal dropped for about 30mins alerted me to what tmobile was up to.
I get 751Kbit/s down and 151Kbit/s up in downtown Seattle area.
Since T-Mobile US is headquartered about 20 minutes from here, I call BS on them upgrading the speed, as I'd think they would do it near HQ first.

Hey guys. kind of funny to wake up and know that i was right about the whole 4g working on a 3g device. Either you guys just want to believe it sooo bad that it clouded your judgments and made you assume you had 4g? Funny thing is, would you expect to have 3g on your old Nokia 3200. I doubt it. Same theory. Cannot, and will never be able to carry a 4g signal, on a non 4g device. EVER. Lol. Good one on their part, but seeing as there such "big bad Dev's" they shouldn't have done that to the community like that. I mean people follow you guys habitually, and it could have messed their phones up. Just saying. Anyways, here are some of my favorites from the madness. Peoples personal experiences with the "super-d-2G-day". Not April fools. BenD-fools day.
1.)Bwinger79 wrote - "I can confirm that this is working on the T-mobile USA network. My average DL speed was roughly 550k/sec and now its well over 1200k/sec.....and thats on a T-Mo tower that has more than your average amount of connections. Cant wait to get home and test this on a tower with less traffic" - Classic. Megaspeeds with 2g, naaaa.
2.)Proxin wrote - "You must install adb to have the proper permissions set for your hardware (usually your hardware only supports 3g/edge speeds for data, but this patches the connection output so that it tells the phone to allow 4G)." - Ahhh, the scientific approach to believing in something false.
3.)Jook11 said - "eah, I had a 4G symbol for a few minutes when I flashed this but speed test looked more like EDGE. anyway the 4G icon went back to 3G before long and I havent seen it again." - A firm believer due to the icons. Haa.
4.)BBuchacher said - "the speed is not up to 4g or sometimes its worse than 3g, but you ARE accessing a 4g network, the speeds will be improved as we work more on the code" - Adding fuel to the fast spreading fire.
5.)Cal-El wrote - "I only have the 3G icon but man my downloads and page loading are really flying and not placebo maybe its faster but really noticable. I belive it. " - This has to be the best one. SMH. "I believe it"
Okay guys your turn. I wanna see what your favs are. Here is the link to the post.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=656499&page=2
lol a whole bunch of futhus
Lol, I wasn't even in on the whole conspiracy thing. Funny how people just believed a non-dev who told them to install adb.apk while in airplane mode.

Build.prop settings for HSPA+ cities-necessary with Froyo?

Tmo here in Orlando and HSPA+ switch is on, however, I can HSDPA speeds of 3-5mbps which is great! My HSUPA speeds seem capped around .58-.68mbps though, not the 1.2+mbps that others are seeing. Do you guys have settings or extra code lines set in /system/build.prop file?
I had:
HSXPA=1 or 2 doesn't make a difference
gprscategory=12 or 10 no difference
HSDPA=8 highest the N1 is capable of
HSUPA=4, 5 or 6 no diff, still .58-.68 upload speeds
Have any of you guys modified the build.prop file with HSPA+? Is it needed at all?
I've been getting 1.3Mbps upload consistently in NYC since January using both stock and modded Cyanogen ROMs, including FroYo when I was testing a few weeks ago.

Can you check your /system/build.prop file and see if there are any entries for ro.ril.hsupa=? ???

Yeah I'm 10 minutes outside of NYC and get nowhere near that speed.
my opinion, you can not "tap" into a network that isn't available in your area.
So trying to set your prop to any settings for a faster network, is time wasted.

Your opinion doesn't mean anything, because not only is it an obvious fact you can't use a network that isn't there, but he said that Orlando DOES have the HSPA+.

Thanks for correcting my mistake
The local network appears to be capped at .6Mbps for you, something you'll have to take up with your local engineers. They'll probably increase upload soon, if they will at all.
I've found you don't have to edit the build prop when using any stock ROM. Only when using cyanogen do I lose hsupa, then I have to fix my build prop.
For example, on stock 2.1 and 2.2 froyo, I get 1.5 mbps upload. As soon as I load any cyanogen ROM, my upload immediately gets capped at 384 kbps. I edit build prop to set hsxpa=2 and instantly my upload goes right up to 1.5 mbps again.
And this makes sense, because Google is selling a 7.2 mbps down / 2.0 mbps up phone, right? So they have the maximum hsupa setting by default. Setting it to anything less makes no sense because the phone will always connect to The fastest connection available in any given location. There's on reason to ever set hsxpa less than 2 in the build prop file, cause that just artificially lowers your connection. I've always wondered why cyanogen ROM had this set like that. Never made any sense.
The exact same thing is happening to me in Lancaster, CA. I get 150-200kbps down on edge and for the last few day on 3g I'm only getting 50kbps down... on top of my gps not working and noone knowing a fix I'm starting to wish I had bought an iPhone...

I suggest you try eViL D FroYo ROM. It comes with the build.prop tweak. With stock Froyo you need to add it on. Not sure if it makes a difference, I didn't notice any when I did it. But you got nothing to lose if you try.

[How To] Turn off HSPA/HSDPA for better battery life.

All cred to hardcore, the man!
Disable HSPA/HSDPA

Good times, thanks for this. I remember seeing something about it but could never find the thread.
How did this never get posted before lol? November is a long time for us to not realize a cross-platform item.

I know, right?
I don't upload and don't download much either; I'd leave it on Edge if I didn't want to be able to talk and use data, so this is just what I needed.
Awesome link!!!! Thanks! Much better battery life now!

Wow this is great! My DL and UL speeds with 3G are almost the exact same or close to the speeds of HSPA, with less battery drain!! Awesome. 3G is just strong in my area, waaaaaay better signal. Thanks again.
Looking at how my phone changes from "H" to "3G", it seems to do it intelligently. When nothing that requires data is done on the phone, such as scrolling through homescreens or being in your app drawer, 3G is used. When data is needed, such as loading web pages or downloading "H" is used. With this auto switching, it seems like the phone does try to optimize battery life between HSPA and 3G so I don't think this fix is really that necessary.
The only thing I noticed is that is when using gTalk, it switches between HSPA and 3G depending on if a message is being sent or if the phone is stationary. If I send a message, "H" comes on and when I don't, it's "3G". If changing between HSPA and 3G does drain battery, then this could be a source of battery drain if you send small messages quickly (how one would chat) back and forth.
Can anyone chime if it consumes battery when it changes between 3G and H?
It doesn't consume more when switching, but HSPA consumes a lot more than 3G. I was previously running HSPA all the time and now just 3G. I did this trick yesterday and I am seeing very good results already.
Bumping this bcuz this is really a battery saver!!!!

Indeed. I'd remembered DG mentioning hspa as a big battery drainer. So when I stumbled on to this little app I was def interested
I am def getting much better battery with the HSPA.

Data Watch??

Just quick question, im currently running Team Phoenix Ultimate, on a Rogers Captivate.
I just recieved a call from Rogers telling me that in the past 3 days, ive used 190mb of data. Meanwhile I haven't used the Browser, or even youtube, I generally never bother anyway, ive never used more than 250mb-300mb.
Is there an app/way to know how much data each individual app is using.
( i have beautiful widgets set to every 3hr update, i have facebook to never update, thats the 2 i can think that may use more otherwise, everything pretty standard.
Any thoughts, thanks guys in advance
190mb sounds about the size of a rom... Didn't happen to download one with data, did you?
No sorry, i just found a thread which said to dial Dial *#*#4636#*#*
i looked at battery usuage then network usage, i found something labelled only as "0" has been using alot, when i clicked on it, i got a force close??
I use a free app called ZDbox. You can get it from the market. You can click under 2g/3g data and under more detail it will break down what has been used by each app you have.
How big is your data plan? I have never been called by rogers and there have been times I've used more data than than. Sometimes near the end of my billing period when I still have a gig left I will download roms or what not to use up my data lol. I'm on a 2gb plan

That is the ROM I developed and I wish I could help out but nothing with the ROM will do that. If you happen to find out what is causing it please either reply in this thread or PM me.
ill give that a try, thankyou, Im only on a 500mb, but starting the 15th of may, im getting a 6gb plan.
Okay that makes sense if you have a small data plan like that. I guess its a courtesy thing since you used a huge chunk of your plan in only 3 days. So much better than the old rogers. A guy at work used his blackberry to tether 4 years ago and had a 1500 dollar bill. Lol
Adamholden, glad to see you still around the captivate forums: )
Hey there Adam i love the ROM!!
Just to let you know, I shouldnt have mentioned the ROM, I wasnt trying to blame anything on it, i know for sure its either something Im doing wrong, or Rogers bending me over and giving it to me hard as usual
If i figure it out ill let you know
Did you ever use speed test? I noticed that it uses 6mb data per test.

Watchdog 3g? Oh wait that only tells you all usage. But I updates in realtime so you would see it rising and you could check what you were running...
3G Watchdog Pro does give you a data breakdown by app, but it's not especially accurate.
wife's iphone data usage spiked this month as well...she has never used over 200mb in a month...all the sudden on day 11 got text that she was nearing cap.
Checked data and she was at 170mb. An hour later she hadn't used ANY data.....we were at home and i can confirm her phone was connected to wifi...she uploaded a couple pictures to face book and i get another text...check data and its at 190mb.
I suggest you get Droidstats - It will read your data, minutes, texts and such (also very customizable, you can set your top 5/10.. what time not to count your minutes like night and weekend). Best widget I found so far for tracking
