Does anyone know of an app that will use UK OS mapping ?
Ideally with a way to inject your current GPS position for accurate placement.
The OS do have an open map policy and there are a few iPhone apps that will access this... but cannot find any for Android so far.
ViewRanger on my 'old' Nokia N85 was very very good, but its currently not available for Android (fingers crossed though).
We do a lot of Geocaching and having access to an OS map helps with footpath placement and terrain... we hate to walk up very steep slopes if we don't have to nor over cliff edges
cheers
Thought i'd give this a bump as I would be interested in this also.
Imagine the 1:2500 1901 os maps on the thing too.You could overlay historical maps and stand at the door of your grandparents demolished house! Kewl!!
(I am such a geek)
Cool indeed
There are a few web based (for data) apps on the iPhone so I imagine its not tooo hard to build one, Multimap now have an OS layer so could be used to inject GPS location and pull up the correct map.
Andnav2 gives a choice of several map sources (diffent OS renderers, Google etc). Maps licensed with an AUP that permit caching can even be stored on the SD. TrekBuddy AtlasCreator can be used to create tilepacks for chosen areas.
Interesting app, but no Ordinance Survey support I'm afraid.
I also found RMaps which uses web based mapping from a variety of sources. Have commented on the Market that he look at the open source side of the Ordinance Survey for web based mapping apps...

Sorry that was me jumping the gun reading "OS" as OpenStreet
Anyhow, why not contact the developers of atlas creatorif you've got information about good free map-sources with an AUP that allows apps to store them locally.
edit: just noticed OS maps are far from free. Terms seem similar to many other national mapping agencies. I.e. only companies with deep pockets can afford the proper access to raw data required to make them useful.
Web based solutions can use the OpenSpace data <http://openspace.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/openspace/>
One would assume that an app could be built to look into this data ??
I'm building one at the moment that uses exactly this principle.
David... excellent
If you need a beta tester - let me know. OS mapping with GPS position would be very very cool.

Very cool.
The guy that does RMaps is also wanting to look into this. I emailed him and he mentioned it's on his list.
I'd happily pay for an app that gave access to OS maps....
I too would pay for an app that supported the GPS and compass in the Hero...
Kinda cool if it were like ViewRanger
Sneak Peak - OS Map Alpha 1
Well, I spent some time today getting to grips with Android development (trust me, C# for Win Mob is easier), and I've knocked together a working version of a GPS-linked Ordnance Survey app.

Right now all it does is show your position on an OS Map, and update it if you stray more than 30m from that location. It's more proof-of-concept than anything else. The biggest issue is that it's a resource hog, especially the Javascript, though I think that's cached. I'd like to have it installed locally, but the maps are tied to a domain name. ;-(
What are the things that you'd like to see in it? Compass support is coming soon!
Edit: Actually, it does seem to be caching fairly well, it's gone up to 3MB now.
Edit 2: Small update to use the whole window to shop the map, and to move the location.
YOU ARE A GOD !!
I never thought just asking a the question would lead to what I am seeing above. If thats where you live - nice area... and you may want to change the pic as it could be showing your home
Well... when you say caching, do you mean it caches the map tiles and then reuses them if you load up the app in the same location ? ie it does not re fetch the data ?
Features... well you asked
1. Compass (on its way you say)
2. Bookmarking - to allow easy return to an area you've saved.
3. POI's
4. Panning with the finger not just buttons (like Maps does)
5. Ability to load GPX's for geocaching - for location not necessarily for navigating to as GeoBeagle does this very well when combined with Radar.
6. Google Maps terrain overlay and satellite view overlay (with selectable opacity maybe)
7. Route tracing / breadcrumb laying for re-tracing your steps should you get lost in a forest, moor etc.
hmmm I seem to be suggesting all those things that ViewRanger has... that is a great app but buying map tiles for usually single use is expensive.
I would happily pay for an app though that does what you have so far.
Again... very happy to beta test
Cheers
that's marvellous David, thanks.
It looks great as is, but my one extra request would be to (optionally, perhaps) remove the cursor and zoom buttons, and be able to control it with swipe (to move) and pinch/spread to zoom.
thanks again
Looks great so far !
I looked at OS OPenSource and noticed that the api key you get is tied to one domain so wondered how you've got round this, if at all yet.
As for requests. Any way to tie in google/wikipedia searches to display their locations on this map. Handy for finding pubs/historical places on the map.
Keep up the good work.
Dylan
Wow - all I can say is "I WANT"!
Very nice looking - even better when you get compass sorted!
Whats the deal with Ordnance Survey anyways?
I've been waiting for an OS based map app since I got my Hero. This looks very promising. (and I too would be willing to pay)

They are the best maps available of the UK.
Google Maps is great to a point, but only shows roads and the odd track.
OS maps show footpaths, field boundaries, historical points of interest and land marks, at some scales even the building outlines.
Take a look at how detailed they are

They're quite possibly the higest quality maps in the world for general usability and detail.

Ok, this was my first app on the market. Basically it's a window that lets you enter a search term and select a search or just a URL and it will open a browser to that page.
So far I have:
Google
Google Images
Google Maps (Uses Maps app)
Wikipedia
IMDB
Amazon
Ebay
Android Market
(Youtube coming soon)
If you have any other search suggestions, please post them. I will be happy to add them!
Check out the app on the market! I have a free version and a donate version for $1.43 (So I get a buck). It's rated 5/5 so far (I'm quite pleased)
I find myself using this app more than any others
Many have asked for an On Screen Keyboard, and I've been researching it, but I don't really know how to make one. If you have any tips regarding that, that would be awesome.
Anyways, enjoy the app!
UPDATE: Custom searches added.
Very nice, very useful indeed! I have always been a bit annoyed by having to start the browser up and go to the site I want to search and wait for it to download and render before I can perform my search. Can take 10, 15, 30 seconds before I even submit my search. This makes it so much easier!
Great app, man. Thank you!
A suggestion for improvement would be for the users to be able to add "custom" search strings. I frequent a bunch of sites that are too obscure for you to add to your app, so an option for me to add my own search string would be great.
Say I want to add a custom site, like blocket.se (a Swedish classified advertising site) and I know the formatting for a search on that site is http://www.blocket.se/li?q=<search_string>
Now let's replace the string we enter in the text field with an operator, like %s :
http://www.blocket.se/li?q=%s
Which would perform a search of that particular site. When adding a custom site we would need the following dialog.
Name: [____________] <-- Where we enter the name of the custom search
String: [____________] <-- The formatted URL
[Save] [Cancel]
Sorry for unloading this on you, I do realize a feature like this won't just happen by itself, it takes many hours of coding to make it happen. Feel free to tell me to bugger off if it's just not something you feel is right for this app.
Cheers!
No, I actually think that's a fantastic idea. Right now the search drop down is just a static array of names and the urls are hard coded in. Unfortunately, sharedpreferences doesn't support arrays so unlimited custom searches might not work, but I could let users put in 3 or so. I'll get on it over the weekend. Sorry for thinking out loud haha.
And I'm glad you like it
Maybe custom searches would be a good feature just for people with the donate version?

Three custom ones would be great too, no doubt! Thinking out loud is a great way of giving an idea some structure, and if you in addition to that can bounce an idea off a couple of other people it usually turns out great. A bit of brainstorming.
I would definitely pay a few bucks for custom search strings. Unfortunately I can't access paid apps yet, probably because I'm on a dev phone and in the wrong country. I could drop a few bucks off on your paypal account though, if you have one.
Have you put the free one on the market yet? I don't see it posted, only your paid version. Not that I won't pay for it, I'd just rather check it out before purchasing
I would like to try it out too, and since I don't have a Google Checkout, I can't. I would rather donate by Paypal if you have an account.
The free version is on the market as well (it's a bit older). Just search Go To Url. If you do feel like donating, there's a button on my website(www.nickkarstedt.com) that has a paypal donate button.
Answers.com would be nice as well.
Good thinking.
Ok, just updated the donate version this weekend. I added search history (Works like the browser's history, but is stored seperately. You can disable and clear it).
Now for the big feature: Custom searches.
You can now add and delete as many custom searches as you want. You can even delete the default custom searches (so you can reorder them).
I'm going to add the option to move searches up and down on the list for the next version. Until then, you'd have to delete and add.
Loving it!
The search string is always added to the end of the URL we enter (when we add a custom search)? Nineteen out of twenty times this is not a problem, but on some sites the formatting of the URL is a bit different and the search string is not placed at the end of the URL but rather in the middle of it.
Still, I love this app. Makes searching so much easier when you don't have to wait for websites to load/render.
**Edit: One thing I have noticed is that if you open the app up in portrait mode, select a search in the list and then switch to landscape, you have to select which site to search again (it defaults back to "Go To URL!" mode). Not a big problem, just something I noticed just a minute ago for the first time
Many have asked for an On Screen Keyboard, and I've been researching it, but I don't really know how to make one. If you have any tips regarding that, that would be awesome.

Yeah. I really shouldn't try to appeal to whiners... but I need more stars! (And cash! Cash is always nice!)
I notice you're using a generic Windows Run icon for your app. Not sure if you're interested, but I made a dedicated "Go To Url" icon (mostly because it goes better with my theme), which you are free to use should you want to. Either way, here it is.

Awesome! I could use that one for the paid version, looks very spiffy.
Also, I think what I'm going to do now with free/donate versions is just keep the free version a release or two behind the donate version, just so those who pay get it a few days/a week earlier. I don't like the idea of limiting functionality.
Got that free users? You'll get your custom searches and history soon enough.
All I'm working on right now is changing the custom urls to use %s instead of %url% + search term. If you guys have any more suggestions, lets hear em!
Is the "nag screen" asking you to go to the market supposed to show up every time I start the app? It says "THIS MESSAGE WILL ONLY BE DISPLAYED ONCE" but I get it every time I start it. And I alreday have Blocked! installed
Ah! That's what I asked you about in the PM! I updated it on the market, I'll send you a copy of the fixed version since you can't update.

Wow, it looks really good and seems to be very fingerfriendly.
I think it fits well into the Metro style.
Only thing to criticize: The touch input to raise and lower the weight for example (Video min: 1:33) could be done a bit nicer I think.
As example you could do it the same way it's done in the OS.
Here a video (min 7:21): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSoEhHV5BFU
Just one thing: In the beginning and the end you can see that the title of your app is Marahon and not Marathon. Just a little thing to fix
Regards
Sry for my english, hope you understand what I mean.
Looking good!
Although in some places the UI is a bit confusing, such as in the video at 0.26 where you have Goals Goals as the pivot and Open Open, why is this? as its not clear from the video. You also see this again later in the video with Edit Edit and Twitter twitter etc.
Also at 2.13 it's not clear that you can swipe to the right to see Calibration settings as its not hinted in the pivot
Other than that, I think it looks very cool

Yeah I agree with the Goals Goals and Open Open thing. Perhaps the second word can be grayed out shadow in the background isntead of looking like there is more.
Other than that it looks great, definately something I can use this fall when I start walking/jogging outside.
It looks great.
I'm currently using a similar application (RunSat) on WM, which has two features you might want to add. I personally love both of the listed features, so you could consider whether adding them is worth the effort.
Exporting results to excel / a spreadsheat is something I really like (showing three columns: time, speed, average speed. Could consider adding more). If you have multiple times on the same course, you could have column 1 trough 3 for your first, 5 trough 7 for your second, etc. so it's easy to compare your performance.
Another useful feature is auto-pausing the training when you're standing still (very useful if there's a bridge on the course). Not sure if you already support manual pausing, but that obviously can be useful too.
I'm already very familiar with the app I'm currently using, but I might consider switching to your WM6 app. For WP7 I'm pretty sure I'll get yours after seeing your demo!
Good luck with further development, I'm very happy to see another dev preparing for the WP7 launch
freeriders:
The numeric input panel you linked looks really sweet. I'll keep that in mind and see if I can make something similar .
DMAND/cyclical:
Sorry about the "Goals Goals" thing, I should have mentioned that it will not be there in the final release (it's there because I'm temporary using an open source Pivot control which doesn't support single pages, Microsoft will release their own Pivot control before the release. So I'm awaiting theirs before I invest too much time in making a "single page pivot lookalike".)
cPT.cAPSLOCK:
The WM6 app supports exporting to CVS (which you can open in Excel), I would add it to the WP7 app if I knew how to give the user his file . Since there's no traditional fileesystem you can't just save it. But since the WP7 app will be compatible with the webpage (www.marathon-mobile.net) you can always use the "Share" feature to upload the result to the webpage and then save it as kml/gpx/cvs from there.
Manual pausing is already supported, I want to implement auto-pause but I haven't done it yet since I'm not sure how to handle the noice in the GPS-signal in a proper way. But I guess I have to accept that the feature will work in ALMOST all cases.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Cool, I thought that might be the reason , hopefully the offical controls are released soon
What's the point?
I'm not sure there's any point in porting an app like this over to WiPhone7 when it can't run in the background. If you use your phone the app will be frozen, not to mention if you get a call or check a mail. Hopefully people remember to resume it after they're done. I can't even listen to Pandora or .977 or use a navigation app (not that there is one) at the same time, which is when I'd use it.
This app would be better ported to webOS which could actually handle it.
Hello,
I'm agree with freeriders concerning the numeric panel.
What do you use to realize charts ?
Thanks
gaijin1%
I'm a .NET developer and I find the WP7 platform interesting, so I'm porting this app to WP7 . Unfortunately I dont have enough spare time to port it to yet another platform, such as WebOS. Its possible to run under lock screen and as long as you stick to the built in music player you can listen to music while you're out running, and thats enough for me. I do agree that real multitasking would be neat, but this is not the tread to debate WP7 OS design .
Roccc
I'm using Silverlight Toolkit (http://silverlight.codeplex.com/) for charting. It seems to work good, but I haven't received my real device yet, so I can't be sure the performance is OK.
Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks a lot for the toolkit
Me too, I haven't received my real device :S
I've released another video, its available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vldm4WVguLk
Unfortunately I haven't had the time to improve the touch controls for numeric inputs (such as weight), but it's still something I want to do . I also plan to move some more buttons down to the application bar and add some more stuff to the map.
Looks great, but i guess you have to think about a good background. I also think there are to much options, so it should be nice if they will be arranged in groups
This is great.
I am planning to get rid of my desire in favour of a new WP7 phone later this month and I have been thinking about ways to track my running activity while waiting for an app to do just that. Glad to see someone is already working on it. I am very much looking forward to give it a try!

It doesn't need to run in the background. Just Disable UserIdleDetection mode and some Tombstoning and phone calls will interrupt the app, but it will reload. I use Caliburn.Micro framework for WP7 apps, and it makes it really easy to do. Just be sure to Enable UserIdleDetectionMode when closed or tombstoned. This passes cert and is different from ApplicationIdleDetectionMode, which requires user opt-in.
As promised I've released a free version of the app, a link is available in the first post .
Nice app and get's it done in a very fluid manner. There are a lot of options to customize setup for individuals and such. One feature that would be nice to further add to the customization would be adding the ability to reorder the home screen (smaller items). Like current speed, average speed, decline, etc. For instance, I would like to be able to see (along with the most main items which you nailed..time and distance) calories and average pace when I just glance at my phone. As it is now, I have to swipe a little to see that row of information. My only suggestion is it's great as I said. And thanks a lot.
I've just released another update to the app (2.8). The biggest news is the ability to earn achievements (not xbox live) for your workout. Here's a list of the available achievements: http://www.marathon-mobile.net/Results/Achievements . Hopefully It'll help people get a little extra motivated to work out . Other news in 2.8 is FR/IT/NL/ES/SV voices as well as an auto-pause feature.
kwill: Thanks for the feedback, I've thought about letting the user re-organize the dashboard. But I haven't implemented anything like that yet.
Here's a little preview of the upcoming release: http://www.marathon-mobile.net/Info/Development
It'll enable Marathon to upload your results "live", so friends and family can watch the progress while you are out running . The feature will be available in both the free and premium version of Marathon and I'm targeting a release in early August (The feature is done, but I'm going on a vacation soon. So I'll keep it for a while ).
Version 3.0 is now available. It's been updated to Mango, so it supports fast app switching and 32bit colors.

Hi alatesta, thanks for your intrest and your reply.
Geaolocation uses the internal GPS device in your phone.
please make sure you have enabled the location service (Settings->Location), and your device also should have access to GPS satelites (this means, sometimes gps doesn't work becouse of a cloudy sky or inside of the buildings!)
Hey can you take a look at the guidelines sticky and change your OP accordingly?

I'm aware of how GPS works...I have five Windows Phones, 3 which are developer unlocked ;-)
Version 2.0 now pulls down my address but the map itself does not change, meaning my map stays a global map instead of zooming into my location.
No offense, but your app is kind of useless at this point.
Update: so you have to manually zoom in, by pinching? Why doesn't it just auto-zoom into your location instead of showing the world map?
Yes, you are right. current version just saves the last zoom level which you have browsed manually and whenever you tap to get in your location, it just uses the current zoom level.
I'll add an option in next version, so you can define the zoom level by which you wish to view your location on map.
Thanks for your reply
Feels like a good start. It still has serious performance issues and, from a usability perspective, it's not obvious how to search for an address.
The green arrow (location marker) points to another location when you double tap to zoom in.
Keep up!
Hi ertz, thanks for your reply
The green arrow, just shows your location which is retrived from internal GPS, not the location which you double tap.
And about the performance issues, would you provide some detailed information about these issues so I can handle them properly?
By the way, to search for an address, simply select the "jump to address" from the menu.

Yes, I understood what the green arrow meant as it pointed to my house. I just found that when I double tap the map to zoon in, the arrow moved to another location. Must be a random bug because I couldn't reproduce it every time.
And about the performance issues, would you provide some detailed information about these issues so I can handle them properly?

Well, it feels like a performance issue, but it might actually be how the zoom function is handled. When I pinch to zoom in/out it takes a little while for the app to actually zoom in. And when I change the zoom, the previous zoom level disappears and shows a "Loading" text. It just feels a little unresponsive.
You could probably change the approach to how the zoom works. Take the built-in Bing maps as an example: when you zoom in/out, the previous zoom level is still visible and you can actually see the map getting bigger/smaller while you do the pinch gesture.
By the way, to search for an address, simply select the "jump to address" from the menu.

Yep, I did find the "Jump to Address" function. I'm a graphics designer and I have some experience with UX/UI Design as well. What I meant in my previous reply is that "Jump to Address" isn't as obvious as saying "Search for address". Also, it would be much better if you add an icon to the app bar; the search function is used very often by people, so making it visible at all times is a good idea.
I hope I made myself clear. English isn't my primary language
EDIT:
I forgot to mention that when I move around, the parts of the map that are no longer visible are "discarded"... When I move back to the place I was a second ago, the map has to be reloaded. Depending on how you coded this, it might have a negative impact on the user's wallet. It costs money to download the maps.
This is the best Google Map apps I've ever seen,
but I've a little lag issue when use zoom in-out.. anyway keep up the good work ! Thank you !
This looks great! Good job.
One quick question though. I use Google maps on WM to track the bus and train schedules. Google Maps would show the bus stops and when clicked they would give you the transit schedule within the app. Is this possible on any map program for WP7 yet?
Hi ertz, I put the search button as you suggested
Some sort of improvements are also applied and I've planned to improve the performance even more in next versions.

That's the main reason to have offline maps!
You should download the maps for most browsed regions (for example your home town) using internet connection of your PC (connect using USB cable or WIFI) and then you can move around with no cost
This app will be awesome when:
1) zooming in/out is smooth
2) directions are added
But still, this is by far the best free app out there. TA maps is pretty good, but I can't buy it cuz I don't live in marketplace supported country :/

Thanks! now it makes much more sense
Now, another thing I caught is that while moving around, parts of the map won't load. It only shows a white section. The funny thing is that I cannot move the map if I tap inside the white section.
Hey!
I´ve tried 2.1 a few days ago and tried 2.2 a few seconds ago...everytime the same error: "could not retrive address. Try again later".
At this moment I can´t use any function of this app...is there any solution?
what sort of zoom levels do people tend to cache?
I think I chose too many (after 12 hours was only 2%)

To download a map, you should first zoom enough to the region you wish to save its maps. for example, I used zoom level 13 to cover my own home town, the whole city fits the screen at this level, then I use to download from level 0 to level 16!
Please be careful that it downloads the whole region that fits the screen at the currently viewing level! for example at level 0, which you see the whole globe, if you attempt to download the map, it will start to download the whole of the world!!!

more features like this, are planned for future releases...
This is a feature that some of us have been requesting for a longgggg time, and it is finally here.
It is especially helpful for Nooks, since they don't have cell phone.
In Google Maps 5.7 - just released - go to Labs, and enable Download Map Area, and then, when you have Wifi access, you can download maps onto your Nook for places you are going to.
Then later, when you don't have Wifi access (because you are not home, nor in a hotel, coffee store or library), you can still use the downloaded maps to find your way ... to somewhere with Wifi access.
Thanks to Ole, the dev at Google for this feature.
Very cool. Will have to try it out.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Except the d/l maps only cover 10 square miles. It's hardly effective at doing anything except routing you over to your neighbors.

No, it is a 10 mile square = 100 square miles. And you can download more than one area if you want. But you cannot do routing on downloaded maps, so this is probably more interesting for pedestrians than for drivers.
Just tried this, and it's actually 10 miles in each direction from the point you select, which means 20x20 miles = 400 sq. miles.
Only problem, where does it download the map to? I've got 7.0.3 running from my SD card. And yes, I'm new, or I'd probably know the answer.
Found the download location. Open the maps app (even though you're offline), menu/More/Cache Settings/Downloaded map areas.
Totally cool feature, OP is right. I prefer not to use a GPS, this'll come in handy.
Hell yes! Now I can download maps for all of the areas I may frequent and have them ready to go, no need to tether (painfully, mind you) with my GhettroPCS data...
Tested by downloading a map area that I hadn't cached before, turned off my wifi, and then zoomed into the square. Voila, all the street names appeared and the correct zoom-level map tiles loaded.
It takes only seconds to download map areas on WiFi.
Nice feature!
Nice feature, but still fairly worthless as it limits the downloads to 10. Perhaps the next update will allow you to cache a reasonable amount of maps.....
It's only 10sq miles at a time, you can just keep adding on more and more, I've cached the whole of greater Phoenix, Tempe and Sun City Arizona. This will definitely come in handy for me... if they add offline routing all the better...

I mean you can only have 10 squares cached at any one time. And in a state like NM, you need all the squares you can get.

I have quite a few 10sq mi areas cached, and let me tell you, the ladies love it!
"What we have here is.... failure... to communicate."
The squares for the city look good, but MY complaint is that basically, i would like to cache my entire state (I love being outdoors and on the road, and having a variety of maps available is always a good thing). But because you can only have 10 squares at any one time, the caching is still worthless to me (cached city data is not what i need. I need data on the boonies).

Oh, so you can only have ten, 10 sq mile areas at any one time? LOL, that is indeed hard to communicate
