This is a feature that some of us have been requesting for a longgggg time, and it is finally here.
It is especially helpful for Nooks, since they don't have cell phone.
In Google Maps 5.7 - just released - go to Labs, and enable Download Map Area, and then, when you have Wifi access, you can download maps onto your Nook for places you are going to.
Then later, when you don't have Wifi access (because you are not home, nor in a hotel, coffee store or library), you can still use the downloaded maps to find your way ... to somewhere with Wifi access.
Thanks to Ole, the dev at Google for this feature.
Very cool. Will have to try it out.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Except the d/l maps only cover 10 square miles. It's hardly effective at doing anything except routing you over to your neighbors.

No, it is a 10 mile square = 100 square miles. And you can download more than one area if you want. But you cannot do routing on downloaded maps, so this is probably more interesting for pedestrians than for drivers.
Just tried this, and it's actually 10 miles in each direction from the point you select, which means 20x20 miles = 400 sq. miles.
Only problem, where does it download the map to? I've got 7.0.3 running from my SD card. And yes, I'm new, or I'd probably know the answer.
Found the download location. Open the maps app (even though you're offline), menu/More/Cache Settings/Downloaded map areas.
Totally cool feature, OP is right. I prefer not to use a GPS, this'll come in handy.
Hell yes! Now I can download maps for all of the areas I may frequent and have them ready to go, no need to tether (painfully, mind you) with my GhettroPCS data...
Tested by downloading a map area that I hadn't cached before, turned off my wifi, and then zoomed into the square. Voila, all the street names appeared and the correct zoom-level map tiles loaded.
It takes only seconds to download map areas on WiFi.
Nice feature!
Nice feature, but still fairly worthless as it limits the downloads to 10. Perhaps the next update will allow you to cache a reasonable amount of maps.....
It's only 10sq miles at a time, you can just keep adding on more and more, I've cached the whole of greater Phoenix, Tempe and Sun City Arizona. This will definitely come in handy for me... if they add offline routing all the better...

I have quite a few 10sq mi areas cached, and let me tell you, the ladies love it!
"What we have here is.... failure... to communicate."
The squares for the city look good, but MY complaint is that basically, i would like to cache my entire state (I love being outdoors and on the road, and having a variety of maps available is always a good thing). But because you can only have 10 squares at any one time, the caching is still worthless to me (cached city data is not what i need. I need data on the boonies).

This is a cool app. I like the ability to have the temp in your top bar.
Cool. Thanks for the link.
Unfortunately, it keeps locking up my Tilt....
I'm suspicious of Weather Bug. I remember a few years back, this app would sneak in on my desktop and was a pain to remove it. Seems like it was part of some spy/ad ware.
Very nice...thank you. I loved weatherbug back in the day before subscription, I hope it stays free this time.

I have to agree with you on that... LOL I wouldn't even install weather bug on your device if I didn't like you. It's spyware and you should avoid it. Why not try weather to go or weather watcher mobile?
After testing for a few days I ended up uninstalling it. For some reason it seemed to drain my battery faster.
I'll just settle for my Throttlelauncher weather now, after flashing Throttle Diamond.
Weatherbug is draining your battery because it is known to constantly connect not only to get weather updates but to also perform its adware\spyware functions. I would stay away from it. Once installed it is very hard to get rid of.
WeatherBug pwns you all..

Such FUD.
Weatherbug for the PC desktop, the free version, certainly does contain adware.
But this is a Today Screen Plugin folks. What adware is going to run on a today screen plugin on a mobile phone? Spyware? Spying what for crying out loud?
And to remove it, go to remove programs, and poof, it's gone, as gone as any other today plugin.
And if it's draining the batter, try going into options and changing the update frequency so it's not banging away at your data connection all the time. Any weather app will drain the battery if it's updating frequently enough.
gwnorth pwnz you all now too.
sorry I just had to use that pic. Just look at that cat, omg I can't stop laughing.

The program was connecting to the internet each time I woke the phone from sleep mode. It wasn't a phenomenal amount of battery drain but it was noticeable to me.
We obviously have a difference of opinion about the PPC version. The one thing we all do seem to agree on is the PC version was somewhat nefarious. Based on the history you should be skeptical of the newest PPC version. Weatherbug is not to be trusted, in my opinion. But you are free to add whatever you want to your PPC. I am not as confident as you are that it is completely removed.

Anyone know how weatherbug gets the temp to display on the taskbar ?
I like the severe weather alerts (too many damn tornadoes in Kentucky), and I'm not aware of any other weather apps that will sound an alarm if severe weather is inbound. If others can be made to do this I would like to try them out. Its not that I dislike weatherbug, I've just been using it for years.

I am talking about the Global Positioning System, GPS.
I am a Geocacher so I use three different apps to utilize the GPS system. First I have mostly used BeelineGPS, and Google Maps. I have recently begun evaluating Geoscout which shows real promise as a geocaching app.
The problem is that I have drained my battery a couple of times and have recently begun resetting my device to avoid my battery running flat. I strongly suspect that GPS is the problem.
I would love to have an app to toggle GPS on/off.
I will do a search for GPS Utilities, thanks for the tip bertrand13
Use BAF GPS Toggle

Nope. Or yes Ask the programmer to make it VGA aware.
I basically posted in the wrong forum. Though it was the few threads about gps on/off. I have a MC IV never use it, thought. I neither works on WM5. It gives me an error on WM6. Programmer is looking at it.
I am also interested in toggling G-P-S on and off. I currently have an HTC HD2. I would like to turn GSM and GPRS off in favor of keeping GPS on. Anyone tips?
Bit of a noob question, but is there any app that can access map overlays stored on the SDcard and then use the built-in GPS to plot you on the map?
I am not looking for telenav or anything, and Google Maps requires a data connection, which I don't have.
Does this exist, and if not, is it even possible?
Thanks in advance for any help!
i'll join this question actually, I'm from uk and have unlimited data plan but I'm going away to South Africa soon for few weeks and would love to use g1 as a satnav, my old kaiser would be able to do that, where are the solutions for g1??
AndNav2 can precache given area. It caches the visible on the screen area up to a given details level. 50Km x 70Km (~35Mi x 45Mi) at 17 level is about 200MB
BigPlanet looks like it would do what you want:

You can aquire Copilot Live 8 and be free of the data connection required by all other GPS programs for Android. With Copilot you get turn by turn directions, live updates and can even locate the spot where you took a picture with your phone via the photonav option. I don't have the data plan needed for other programs so I have Copilot.. now I just turn it on and go! You just save the maps for your particular region onto your SD card. I am using the EU version but there is a NA version as well. Check it out.
try mapdroyd with contentdroyd from market. I haven't tried it yet but this looks like something you were looking for

Copilot can do this. It is a PAY-FOR application on the market ($35 USD), so you'll need root + market enabler to download it. Yes, it is a navigation program, but if you don't program a route, it will simply overlay your location on the map as you are looking for. It can even be set to 2-D maps to more closely match google maps rather than the default 3-D maps.
Plus it can navigate if need be, so bonus for you.

Hi, t3mp3st;
OruxMaps is a FREE appliaction for Android.
Current version 1.2.0.
Locales: es, en, de.
Visit: OruxMaps web page
OruxMaps is a map viewer. It can work in two modes: online with google maps, and offline, with calibrated maps for OruxMaps
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
If you want to work offline, you need to calibrate your own maps. It is neccesary:
* OruxMapsDesktop + image (the map) + coordinates of the four corners
* OruxMapsDesktop + a calibrated map for OziExplorer. There are a lot of applications that allow you to create Ozi maps.
With OruxMaps you can:
* Online map viewer (Google Maps)
* Offline map viewer. There is an application that lets you create calibrated maps for OruxMaps (see Download and Manual page).
* Map autoload, when leaving current map, or when a more detailed map is found in current position.
* TrackLog: Record your tracks (gpx format, NEW: kml format)
* View old tracks/routes (gpx format)
* Analize tracks/routes
* Zoom
* Save Waypoints
* Show coordinates, header, speed, altitude, ...
* And this is only the beginning!
thanks,
orux
Does anyone know of an app that will use UK OS mapping ?
Ideally with a way to inject your current GPS position for accurate placement.
The OS do have an open map policy and there are a few iPhone apps that will access this... but cannot find any for Android so far.
ViewRanger on my 'old' Nokia N85 was very very good, but its currently not available for Android (fingers crossed though).
We do a lot of Geocaching and having access to an OS map helps with footpath placement and terrain... we hate to walk up very steep slopes if we don't have to nor over cliff edges
cheers
Thought i'd give this a bump as I would be interested in this also.
Imagine the 1:2500 1901 os maps on the thing too.You could overlay historical maps and stand at the door of your grandparents demolished house! Kewl!!
(I am such a geek)
Cool indeed
There are a few web based (for data) apps on the iPhone so I imagine its not tooo hard to build one, Multimap now have an OS layer so could be used to inject GPS location and pull up the correct map.
Andnav2 gives a choice of several map sources (diffent OS renderers, Google etc). Maps licensed with an AUP that permit caching can even be stored on the SD. TrekBuddy AtlasCreator can be used to create tilepacks for chosen areas.
Interesting app, but no Ordinance Survey support I'm afraid.
I also found RMaps which uses web based mapping from a variety of sources. Have commented on the Market that he look at the open source side of the Ordinance Survey for web based mapping apps...

Sorry that was me jumping the gun reading "OS" as OpenStreet
Anyhow, why not contact the developers of atlas creatorif you've got information about good free map-sources with an AUP that allows apps to store them locally.
edit: just noticed OS maps are far from free. Terms seem similar to many other national mapping agencies. I.e. only companies with deep pockets can afford the proper access to raw data required to make them useful.
Web based solutions can use the OpenSpace data <http://openspace.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/openspace/>
One would assume that an app could be built to look into this data ??
I'm building one at the moment that uses exactly this principle.
David... excellent
If you need a beta tester - let me know. OS mapping with GPS position would be very very cool.

I too would pay for an app that supported the GPS and compass in the Hero...
Kinda cool if it were like ViewRanger
Sneak Peak - OS Map Alpha 1
Well, I spent some time today getting to grips with Android development (trust me, C# for Win Mob is easier), and I've knocked together a working version of a GPS-linked Ordnance Survey app.

Right now all it does is show your position on an OS Map, and update it if you stray more than 30m from that location. It's more proof-of-concept than anything else. The biggest issue is that it's a resource hog, especially the Javascript, though I think that's cached. I'd like to have it installed locally, but the maps are tied to a domain name. ;-(
What are the things that you'd like to see in it? Compass support is coming soon!
Edit: Actually, it does seem to be caching fairly well, it's gone up to 3MB now.
Edit 2: Small update to use the whole window to shop the map, and to move the location.
YOU ARE A GOD !!
I never thought just asking a the question would lead to what I am seeing above. If thats where you live - nice area... and you may want to change the pic as it could be showing your home
Well... when you say caching, do you mean it caches the map tiles and then reuses them if you load up the app in the same location ? ie it does not re fetch the data ?
Features... well you asked
1. Compass (on its way you say)
2. Bookmarking - to allow easy return to an area you've saved.
3. POI's
4. Panning with the finger not just buttons (like Maps does)
5. Ability to load GPX's for geocaching - for location not necessarily for navigating to as GeoBeagle does this very well when combined with Radar.
6. Google Maps terrain overlay and satellite view overlay (with selectable opacity maybe)
7. Route tracing / breadcrumb laying for re-tracing your steps should you get lost in a forest, moor etc.
hmmm I seem to be suggesting all those things that ViewRanger has... that is a great app but buying map tiles for usually single use is expensive.
I would happily pay for an app though that does what you have so far.
Again... very happy to beta test
Cheers
that's marvellous David, thanks.
It looks great as is, but my one extra request would be to (optionally, perhaps) remove the cursor and zoom buttons, and be able to control it with swipe (to move) and pinch/spread to zoom.
thanks again
Looks great so far !
I looked at OS OPenSource and noticed that the api key you get is tied to one domain so wondered how you've got round this, if at all yet.
As for requests. Any way to tie in google/wikipedia searches to display their locations on this map. Handy for finding pubs/historical places on the map.
Keep up the good work.
Dylan
Wow - all I can say is "I WANT"!
Very nice looking - even better when you get compass sorted!

They are the best maps available of the UK.
Google Maps is great to a point, but only shows roads and the odd track.
OS maps show footpaths, field boundaries, historical points of interest and land marks, at some scales even the building outlines.
Take a look at how detailed they are

Hi, i have a little trouble with the weather in my nexus one... It keeps changing my city with a town nearby... sometimes when i refresh my weather app, my city is shown, but sometimes the little town nearby is shown, im not sure if this is a trouble of the maps, my gps, or the weather channel but, its a little bit annoying... im using cyanogen, but my nexus had this exact behavior when he wasnt rooted and had the stock firmware on it...
Just for you to understand... heres a little map: (the distance between one and the other are about 15 miles)...

Thanx in advance my dear droid fellows!
I believe the weather app uses GPS, AGPS or WiFi to determine the current location. GPS would be accurate... AGPS depends on you cellular providers location broadcast based on triangulation of neighbouring towers... WiFi depends on you ISP's IP location broadcast... AGPS & WiFi aren't very accurate and provide a larger location ratio so you mite get incorrect location information...
Great!
Thnx Craig!
How can i know which method my N is using??
I have issues with the weather app also, small town problem I'm sure. But I disabled location based weather and manually update my zip code for reliability's sake. I recommend the same, as long as I'm in the same region its close enough.

Well, that all depends... from my understanding... if you have your GPS on and have data/wifi, it should use the GPS position... if you have wifi on & connected, the phone uses wifi instead of data, so wifi location comes into picture... otherwise, with only data (no wifi/GPS), AGPS is used...

So which is the problem over here?
Im really confused, because when in the weather says "the other town" in google maps says "my city" (this when the GPS is on)

I just reboot it with the gps turned off and it fliped again to the town! I dont really dont know whut to do!
Well, I guess I was wrong about one thing... apparently, the weather app does not use GPS to find your location... it uses only WiFi and AGPS (@see http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=704ea3966b365ce1&hl=en)
And you could try one more thing... Go to Setting > Application > Manage Applications... look for all the Weather related applications and Clear Data & Cache... reboot and the check!!!
