I have Drizzy's Personal Hero rom and its ridiculously slow and laggy compared to Cyan3.9.10... Just wondering if theres a way to make it any faster.
I read you could install swapper and overclocker from the market and that would make it faster but then i read that it would brick your phone?
Also Drizzys Personal hero didnt come with some of the htc widgets like stocks and contacts, is there somewhere i can download those from?
double post. sorry
pretty much nothing will be anywhere near as fast as cyanogenmod. that's what his rom is know for really.
don't run overclock or the swapper applications from the market on any of drizzys heros. swapper is automatic on it. you need a linux-swap partition on your sd card and that will REALLLLLLy speed it up.
also, if you want all the htc widgets, get the FULL hero off his page. his personal is customized to his (and coincidentally, my) liking, so he got rid of exchange, widgets he didn't use, etc.
none of the builds on his current thread are fully optimized either. he's going to wait till he gets all the bugs and kinks out before he fully optimizes it. when it's fully optimized, it'll run faster and more stable.

It's not so much that Cyanogenmod and other stock builds are fast so much that builds with Sense are slow. Stock builds run at baseline speed-- that which any non-standard builds should be compared to.

true. very true. my statement was a VAST exaggeration
I quit running jac or drizzy's because of the lag. If you really want hero run zeroXD 3.82r3 been running it for a couple of day's running 4 screens clock people bookmarks and weather zero lag I have been pushing this build hard it's my understanding that the dalvik cache is what slows hero down twisted has forced cache to SD and stops the lag not a single crash or loading screen yet.

Been searching for a bit.. and can't seem to find a straight answer.
I have read that ION is a very quick ROM. Is anybody running it on their G1? If you are.. does it run smoothly with all the features?
Ion's a really smooth rom. I was using it for a while.
It's really quick, but it's also more of a standard build.
Easily one of the most reliable and fast ROMs out there and it leaves you about 80mb of space to do what you want with it.
It is smooth, and very easy to set up Apps2SD (You just need the Apps2SD app) but the ROM slows to a crawl when you listen to music and run other apps, it's virtually unuseable. Have a look in the release thread, there appears to be lots of people with that problem. Personally I use Cyanogen because it's very smooth and some donut goodness included.

This must only be an issue when you use apps2sd....? The ROM is blazing fast when you just use the phone.
However, I personally use Cyanogen's stuff as well. I like the donut stuff.

A2SD was on a class 2 card, but really it shouldn't make a difference. I'd be listening to a song and browser my music, then go home to open twidroid (which is about 400kb) and the phone would become very unresponsive. An app like twidroid would take no time to load in to RAM, but still the phone would be unuseable. At the time I blamed it on the Class 2, until I read the thread.
Give me some specifics like build 1.5 or 1.6? google apps? games? apps2sd? give me some answers because im tired of this half cooked rom :O
Which rom is half cooked? It's personal preference though which rom to choose.
The only variations of ASOP roms are BFS, mem hack as the kernal is pretty much the same and they all include most of the same things. Obviously 1.6...
Hero roms I look for rosie speed with most of the widgets in tact and flash browser.
stability...
no coma/fc/reboot issues
At this point stability and speed. As more vendors enter the game with customized builds other factors will begin to come into play. For instance the level of social network integration in recent roms is beginning to become relevant when choosing. Also the Launcher apps are starting to vary more.
Whether it is based on 1.5 or 1.6 doesn't matter as much as how functional the rom is. Donut adds a couple nice things but the Pulse, Cliq, and Hero roms (though based on Cupcake) are much more feature rich.
Google apps and a2sd have become pretty much standard issue for all the roms and will probably remain that way until we have more internal storage and better apps to replace the Google ones with.
As far as apps and games goes, leave that up to the user to install. Unless it defaultly comes with the rom, or is usefull to the majority of users leave it out. No need for bloated roms with apps only a few use. Keep 'em slim and let the user add what they want.

its my half baked rom
I am not technical, so from a non-technical perspective, I always add Loccy's better browser (mutitouch/doubletap); CyTown's Modifed Phone MOD (vibrate on hangup various other options); Meltus Max Volume and some form of Advanced Launcher(set number of home screens,submenu's,hide apps,etc); an upgraded camera app would be nice - but I will grab one from the market if the Rom doesn't have it. I always look for a Rom with the PDF Viewer installed because I haven't found a good one in the market. I always run Apps2SD. Also, it seems you need either a Linux Swap or Comcache (I don't care which).
I like the funtionality of the Hero Rom's but they still lag a little too much, so I am on a Donut build (the Official).
Edit: forgot - I like Stericson's Lock screen (and if possible the abilty to make the wallpaper of the lock screen different from the home page).
how does comcache compare to a Linux swap?

I have used both and haven't seen a huge difference in speed. miketaylor00 has done a lot of testing and found that the swap partition is faster, but TheOfficial and the cyan mods both use compcache by default with notes that they have been tested and found to be the fastest. I don't know about the Hero ROMs.

Cyanogen recently mentioned he will not be enabling compcache by default any longer. He says it exposes too many bugs.
Unless the rom is based on one designed for the Dream, you are probably gonna want to use swap to help with the lack of ram.
How does one change their partition from compache to swap? I created the partition and in cyanogen I trust.

what do you mean? you create a linux-swap partition to use for backing_swap or for swap space.
Perfection
* Auto Apps2SD
* Loccy's BetterBroswer
* Advanced Launcher
* Flash
* Stericson's Lockscreen
* 10mb Hack
* Meltus Audio Hack
* Auto Swap
All this on 1.6 , no theme, while still having wifi, led's, bluetooth...etc...still working.
There could be more, but I can't think of any at the moment.

I've been afraid to try the 10mb Hack. Do you find you phone any less stable?
I haven't used it, but if I can get 10mb more Ram I'll be happy, hence the "what do you look for in android roms".

So i assume the 10mb hack takes up less ram? and i know theres flash on hero roms how could i port it to normal dream roms? and how do i get pdfview (htc) to work with 1.6? because it keeps telling me htc blah blah blah
I currently have 5.0.8 on my G1. It runs terribly slow. All I want is a fast ROM. I want to be able to hit the home or back key and not have to wait 5 seconds for the phone to actually do it. I'm using automatic task killer too and I still have difficulty with performance.
Can anyone tell me what the best options are?

use swapper with swapiness 60 and some swap space (file), works great!
Just from my experience, stick with Android 1.6, don't go any higher than that
My opinion is that the G1's hardware was simply not meant nor is capable of running anything above Android 1.6 "well" and at a constant reliable speed.
I have used every ROM starting from JF 1.41 (Android 1.0) to the latest FroYo Roms (Android 2.2). I say the best, fastest and most stable ROM is SuperD (Android 1.6). I don't use the latest version of it... because the theme I love, DarkStar doesn't support it, but even my dated version of SuperD runs extremely well, I am certain the latest version of SuperD runs even better.
I have over 6000 text messages on my phone, I use all 5 screens on my home screen with a total of 10 widgets spread across them, including a Weather Clock which takes quite a bit of memory. Even so, the phone still loads everything very fast. (I do use CompCache and a 32 MB Swap)
I have stuck with SuperD for several months now and I am pretty convinced that this ROM is what I will use until the day I need to get a new phone, which is in half a year or so.

Fastest Roms on the G1 are probably Htcclays superbad 1.3.3 and SuperD
But if your looking for 2.1 roms I highly suggest Chromatic 3.8 by
far the fastest eclair rom for the g1.
enomther !!! 1.6 the original! speeedy and reliable!
anyone have a down load for any of enomther 1.6 or 2.1 roms? links seem to be dead and I've just returned to 2.22.23.02 trying to get t-mobile aosp while remaining rooted.
Anyone have the dl link for Htcclays superbad 1.3.3? And I don't understand the difference between superd white and black. Which ones better and faster?
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=htcclay/
It's somewhere in there
If you ever are looking for more ROMs look in:
http://files.androidspin.com/
db.androidspin.com has mostly dead links
So here's the skinny. I'm new to the whole rooting-esque activities on a phone. The hero is my first smart phone, and i'm looking to expand what it can do.
BUT.
All of the roms I seem to find are 50/50 good/bad to me. They have some nice things like the OC/UV/Jit working, but then they do all sorts of stuff like live wallpapers, all sorts of color changes, lock screen changes, etc etc.
What I'd like, is a minimalist ROM, that as close as possibly matches the following:
SenseUI Dialer app
Auto OC to 710 (and underclock when not in use)
UV
Jit
Good Screen response (with no real keyboard, the onscreen MUST work well)
Things I don't want
Features that don't work (Camera, BT, MMS etc not working)
Instability (I'd trade less crazy for more stable)
See-ums like Live Wallpapers, and other things that do not add function other than visual "niceness"
So my question, is there anything like this?
honeybun
and not the sweet bread variety.

i would say pick up the latest fresh rom, its made for just the basic stuff and you can add more if you want. jit can be very unstable at times so i dont know why you would want that

EDIT: this post goes in general as well as is doesnt really help anything "develop"
perfect one for you, and it happens to be the best.
I use what I think you are looking for exactly, with maybe the exception of the HTC dialer. The absolute best custom 2.1 Rom out there, that does not have much of the eye candy that just drains your battery and personally I find it to be clutter and annoying, it is caller DarchDroid 2.7.
It does not have HTC Sense whatsoever in it. It was built using a different source than what HTC puts on it, and I like it much better. It is very fast, responsive, touch screen works real nice, it has JIT, UV, OC to 710 by default, does not have live wallpaper. It is clean, good to the eye without the glitter, camera and all that works, basically everything works on the phone.
it uses all the standard aosp apps by default like aosp keyboard (which personally i find it very accurate and easy to use).
If the default apps do not please you, you can always dl and install apps from the market.
to check out and dl darchdroid, goto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703133
if you want to use all the google apps, then be sure to dl and install the google ****s on that page as well.

this is great if you don't want sense, to me its a personal preference thing so you can try each. I used dd2.7 for a loooong time and it is the most stable rom Ive had with up to 30 hour battery life
I'm still using Ic3Rom v2.8. It is by far the best ROM I've flashed in terms of performance. It looks mostly AOSP, but still has the Sense dialer and people apps, with other Sense goodies in there as well. Other recent ROMs I've tried out are DarchDroid and the Cyanogen 6 test, and while I've really liked a lot about both of them, Ic3 is more stable and MUCH quicker than either.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=663366&highlight=ic3
DD all the way...best rom ive used to date.. and i have tried them all!!! ic3rom close second!!!
i have to say darch droid, OR buufed Rom are indeed THE best ive used. Both are fast, Stable, AND both use less then 100mb onboard flash! good luck to u though.
I can't believe no one mentioned nfinitefx45's ROM which is 100% stock, with A2SD and everything working. Don't mind the screenshots at the bottom, that's what it looks like only if you flash the optional file for the zen aka MyTouch 3G theme.
As for the OC (and optional undervolt), get DarchKernel for nfinitefx rom here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705074
Users have reported this combo to be very, very fast. The only thing it doesn't have is JIT.
Like others mentioned, Iced HoneyBun ROM is also good, and DarchKernel is also available for it
IceRom 2.8
NOIDBETA still working on oc

Definitely either one is a solid choice, but I prefer Buufed because its completely themed out. Its 100% AOSP (meaning its ridiculously fast), includes all the stuff you like (UV, OC, JIT) and is still very stable, and it looks pretty sweet.

ive been running myns warm donut on my sd card and its been overall good there have been minor issues with some programs requiring a newer version of android but nothing major
anyway, its been running really slow lately and ive been thinking of reformatting and and starting fresh
1st i wonder is there any way to backup my texts,contacts,call logs etc.?
also since i will most likely be reinstalling anyway
is it worth it to move to a froyo or a eclair build overall? are there any features they dont have that myns warm donut had? and what about speed?
and finally if i should update to a eclair or froyo whats the best build?
thanks
i would recommend using froyo, you could use dzo, incubus or kyle's build and you could use atools to customise the speed. the dev's still developing on this but i think it is worth to try.
Sent from my Full Android on Vogue using XDA App
If you think things are slow, go to nand. It's awesome.
you can go to your contacts, press the menu button (power) and then click import/export and then choose export to sd card for the contacts. if you have a data plan, you can skip that and just sync with a google acount
the directions that i gave you comes from my experience with eclair and froyo.
i haven't used any other build.
i have used nand and the sd card method, and i prefer the nand method WAAAYYYY more. (faster, stable, and more stuff i can't think of)
you can use a third party app for the texts, call log, etc. i can't really recommend one because i haven't used one.
a quick google search will do
good luck
