do I need this?
i'm running cyanogens recovery, cyanogens 4.0 rom and my phones working ok.
is there an advantage of having the latest radio?
does this wipe my data?
i've searched radio and found nothing explaining why we should update other than to run a hero rom!
thanks

Its just a wise thing to have. If you don't you might have BT problems or dropped calls. The only reason its needed with hero is because of the spl that is needed. And updating the radio doesn't wipe any data.

Is it 100% neccessary to wipe before updating a rom if its the same rom just a different version? Like I have cyans 3.6.8.1 and want to go to cyans 4.0.1
I'm just looking for some clarification on this matter. I know when you switch roms you want to but I haven't really seen anything concrete on upgrading roms. Any help would be appreciated
No, no, no.... you need to wipe when you use a bathroom, not when you flash software
People will hate me for this but... here it goes
We wipe to avoid problems with the new rom. We DO NOT know if we will have problems, good chance that we will NOT. I never wipe untill something goes wrong, and I was just fine for last 14-15 flashes.
Here's another way to think about it.... do OTA updates wipe your phone? Didn't think so.
Flash away. If you have problems then, and only then, nand back to your previous configuration, wipe, reflash. Don't wipe after flash... Cyan's roms don't like that AFAIK.
Good luck.

I heard somewhere that it's best to wipe when going from HTC rom to Google rom and vice versa. I know that for cyan's roms that if you rarely have to wipe (I had to wipe when trying out 3.9.11.*), but for the most part you won't have to (went from 3.4.6 to each update until 4.0.1 without wipe)

At this point..the only HTC roms we have are Hero and that's a whole another story. Not only you have to wipe but also reformat your sd. Big mess... not worth it IMHO. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks for ppointing this out though...
Personally, I wipe, then repair ext filesystems before I flash a new ROM. The only time I don't is when I'm updating a ROM that I have, cm x.x.x to cm x.x.x, in hich case I'll just repair ext's then flash. But, when in doubt...
Original question(s) seem to be solved.
Closing thread
i have done quite a few searches on this and yet have found nothing so i hope i dont get reamed for posting this.
if someone has a link for this answer id be very thankful.
if not then PLEASE SOMEONE EXPLAIN!!!!!!!
at the moment i am running drizzy hero rom. to do the update i did use the one touch root. on a second phone i did it manually. on both i added the hard spl and am running the RA v 1.2.1 recovery. I liked this ROM and wanted to see what bugs it had. after a few days i wanted to switch and try a different ROM I have dl most of the ROMs available and already have them on my sdcard once i did this no ROM would load except for Drizzy(new Vision v2.8). after trying a few things and accomplishing nothing i decided to redo EVERYTHING. unrooted my phone rooted again applied recovery made sure radio was to date and spl. and still nothing i cant even run the original jf1.5 that i was using before deciding to port. this issue is occuring on both phones. 1st phone was again done with one step root and the 2nd phone was done completly manually. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to try these other roms SO PLEASE SOMEONE HELP. if you need more information on what i did with these phones ill gladly tell you step by step on what i did.
sorry for that.
I was using my G1 and also had a friends. On my g1 i used the one step root. I used the Instructions from The Unlocker.com. It uses flashrec.apk and also Amon Ra's recovery image. After that i went over to the How to Load a Custom ROM. same site. It asks you to check the Radio and the Spl. The radio is 2.22.19.26I and the spl used was the HARDSPL 1.33.2005.
Once i finished that i went and formated the sdcard to Fat32+Ext2+LinuxSwap also converted Ext2 to Ext3.Then I did-Move Dalvik Cache to SD. last 3 steps to speed up hero. after all of that I loaded 4 ROMS CyanogenMod ROM, jACXHeroSkiv Hero ROM v1.8, Drizzy’s NewVision TouchFlo ROM, and JF v1.5 Cupcake ROM. I have only flashed Drizzy's until last night.
I was unable to flash any other one and when i flashed back to drizzy I had problems loading it back but eventually loaded fully the issue was running the startup wizard it kept crashing. after a reboot it was ok.
Give us step by step on what you did and USE PARAGRAPHS
that whole thing looked like mumbo jumbo to me
put new lines where they belong to help separate out the steps you took
FIXED! thanks!

When I first did all of that I did. Am I supposed to data wipe everytime I switch the Rom?

when your using hero rom's, yes.
if your upgrading cupcake roms (ie cyan 4.0.4 to 4.1.9.2 ), no
If its not working, WIPE
you cant go from hero to cupcake without wiping and not expect a lot of problems. they cause too many issues.
hero roms use the data partition differently
also remember to wipe /system/sd/ to clear all of that out. pull your /system/sd/ to your computer first though
thanks you guys it helped alot
I am interested in installing one of the hero roms. They all seem to have advantages and disadvantages, but there are a couple of things not clear to me that hopefully someone can help me with.
1. No Hero ROM has working bluetooth? I have seen in some of the threads people claim they have working BT on a hero rom. True? Does no working mean none at all or just not OBEX? What about A2DP?
2. What about SPL? I am hesistent to install the Haykuro "Death" SPL, but from what I can see it is necessary to install a Hero ROM on the G1. True, or is HardSPL/EngineeringSPL ok?
That is basically all I need to know. Again, these things just do not seem to be clear.
Thanks for any answers you can provide.

1) Nope don't think any have BT in any form. If you saw someone say they had it working, chances are they have Magic/Sapphire/MyTouch3G/Ion which has working BT in Hero ROMs.
2) There's only one Hero ROM (to my knowledge) which supports the original SPL which doesn't have the extra space in /system and /data that Danger SPL (Can't we just call it 1.33.2005?!) has.
I was really worried about flashing 1.33.2005 SPL, infact it took me over an hour due to reading like crazy. Just flash it, you'll be fine. Check you have the 26I radio, Settings > About > Baseband version should end in 26I. Put the spl on your sdcard as update.zip then wipe and flash using alt-s and reboot using home+back. Do not touch the trackball.
Then boot back in to recovery, go to the console and type 'ums_enable', copy the rom over, then 'ums_disable' then 'reboot recovery'. Now you can flash a Hero ROM.
thanks for your insight
I searched around quit a bit and couldn't find this info.
If you go to one of the Froyos, with/without radio, is it possible to just flash it back with another custom Rom over that and all is good?
Just wondering if there are any gotchas like if you put the radio update on etc...
Thanks
how about using search!!!!

One person in that thread claimed, with an unlocked bootloader, that he just put the old radio and custom rom on the card, and did the usual wipe and flash and it worked fine.
Others that posted were all over the place, including some convoluted approach that pretty much wiped everything on the device and SD card to get it back to stock..which I don't care about stock. I just want to be able to go back from 2.2 to my Modaco R21 if necessary without any gotchas.
Yes you can just flash any ROM like you normally would. I've done it a few times now in the last few days. I did the old radio and all.

Thanks.
So I got the original radio, plus my R21 and intersectR kenerl setup I know is good.
Looks like you just flash the radio, then the Rom and kernel and setup again...
Thanks for the reply.
I was looking through the wiki on installing CyanogenMod and I noticed that you're supposed to flash a radio on your phone in the guide. Do I have to do this in ClockworkMod? I used regaw's hero rooter to root my hero, and it flashed Clockworkmod for me.
My baseband is currently 2.42.01.04.27, the one the guide mentioned is 2.42.02.10.29.
Does it matter if I flash a new radio to go along with this or can I just stick with the one I'm on now?

I don't actually know if you need to flash the radio, but if the wiki said so, you should. I've had that .29 radio since it came out, and the best info I can tell you is that the new radio gave me much better reception and therefore better battery life. Yes you can flash it in recovery, assuming you have the flashable zip, it shouldn't matter what recovery you have.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the newest CM7 and aospCMod do not support anything but the newest .29 radio. And as posted above, it will likely improve your signal, so upgrading would be beneficial anyway. Yes you should be able to flash it from any recovery.
Here's the post that contains the download for the newest .29 radio:
