easy keypad access while using phone - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

iphone has a setting that uses the motion sensor to know when the phone is up to your ear (which put screen to sleep) and senses when ur looking down at the phone (which make the keypad come up) while the phone is in use. is there an app fro the g1 that can do that or something similar because its hell when using the phone and using an automated service (which pretty much is all there is now a days) and having the keypad constantly blackout between my inputs

Cyans roms have the option of keeping dialer on for longer time. Or you can push advanced dialer into any rom (look in development forum for complete info and directions)
Good luck

The iPhone doesn't use a motion sensor, it uses an ambient light sensor that your ear blocks and tells the phone to dim itself... as the G1 doesn't have this hardware feature, you wont be able to get the same effect (not to say that it couldn't be tied to the accelerometer somehow).

thanx 4 the nfo

iphone-like: switch screen back on after you remove your phone away from your ear?

hi!
Im asking myself if this is possible with the diamond... been using an iphone 3g for the last days and when you make a call and put the phone to your ear the screen turns off automatically - but then when you remove the phone from your ear the iphone switches the screen on again automatically.
any chance to do this with the diamond?

use tweak 3.2 for diamond that has all the functions u want just as u said.
As far as I recall.. no it doesn't
An app could switch the screen back on when the phone is <45 degrees while on a phone call.
Surur
Usually the word fruittyphone gives me the Creeppsss
But I must say this is a great idea!
Anyhow I cant break tradition:
FruityPhone SUKKKKSSSS
i guess there's no chance to achieve that function with a registry tweak?
some say this has been fixed
but the last rom that had been fixed still don't work
so i think we will have to live with this a little longer
No. The iPhone has a proximity sensor. It detecs your face without touching it. Does anybody know where I can make a free website?

This would be nice, if someone could make an app that would turn screen off and on during the call with light sensor. When you start talking on the phone , you put it to your ear, that covers light sensor, an the app could turn off the screen, and when you remove it from the ear the light sensor gets exposed to the light and could turn the screen on. Now when I think about it, dont know how it would work at night
Hey guys, have you tried this yet

Hope this will do the trick for you

incall screen off app..like iphone????

the iphone switches the screen off when it goes to your head then turns back on when u take it away. is there a simple app for this??
Phone lacks the proximity sensor the iPhone has. Fortunately, it has a plethora of other useful features (a keyboard, picture messages, etc.)

To add on to that the phone also goes to sleep when the call is connected and its just a matter of pressing the power button to get it to wake up again.
mine doesnt
Well mine has always went black when it goes up to my ear, but it would be nice if it came back on when removed from my ear.. although we dont have a proximity sensor, i dont see why it coulnt work with the gsensor/accelerometer. all it would have to do is go on when the phone is put back in the upright position

is there a setting for this?
is it possible to in fact use the light sensor? it obviously recognizes something when it turns off, maybe write up something saying "when dark below 'x' threshold, turn off screen. when bright above threshold, screen on. you would have to press the screen somewhat snugly to your face, but it sure beats nothing.

It should be possible, but no one has done anything with the light sensor of turning it back on. I'm thinking that the polling of the light sensor turns off when the screen is in standby. If we can somehow get that to work in only incall (so it doesn't have battery issues), then it should work, when it goes from little light to more light, it should act as close to phone to far away from phone.
One could even use 2 sensors for it? Maybe the Light-Sensor and the G-Sensor. So when u bring the phone to your ear the light gets dark an the position upright. (the phone turns the screen off) And as soon as it get brighter and the position is change to normal (whatever that is ) it turns back on.
I reall would love to write something like that. But so far i have no clue of writing anything for that phone. Does anyone know a tutorial for writing software for a pda?
Thx
Come on guys this would be soooo great

It doesn't actually do that when you put it up to your ear. It's a WinMo setting to put the phone in standby after a call is launched or received. What you preceive as behavior is actually a timing thing.
The guy from pocket shield managed to combine these two sensors, g-sensor and light sensor, to work together as locking/unlocking behavior.
maybe some g-sensor and lumos code can handle this thing... and create one cab solution here...
if some one could write this code it would be an AWESOME addition to the Phone. I would personaly love this as im sure many others would.
Thanks.
this is a bit late, but here's a cool app that i've found...

Stop phone from turning on when rotated on side during phone call?

My GF and I are very annoyed at this problem. When you tilt the phone on it's side, lik eholding it with your shoulder the phone will turn on. It just so happens that your phone's mute button will be on your cheek and we mute each other.
Is there anyway to stop this? Thank you guys in advance.
Are u sure u are not "uncovering" the light proximity sensor when u tilt it. Its very sensitive, and I have noticed it get turned on when the phone gets an inch or more away from ear exposing the light sensor to any form of light.
While on the phone with my girlfriend at night this happens a lot. Because it is so dark, any movement I do will cause the screen to turn on and I have to hit the button to turn it off.
Just try vto keep it glued to your face :/

Yeah I'm sure. The feature is suppose to be for when you set the phone on your desktop the screen will turn on so you can hit speaker or end the call.

Umm simple work around, get something opaque and stick it over the light sensor with something that won't leave a residue so you can take it off when your call is over?
obviously some people fail to understand how this works. there is a light sensor for screen brightness and a proximity sensor. it is the proximity sensor that detects your face and turns off the screen. the light sensor is not involved in this process. what is happening is that the i9000 roms have default android 2.2 settings that force the proximity sensor to be ignored in certain orientations, i dont know about the new att updates but the 2.1 roms had the overrided from samsung. i tried to fix it in tasker but tasker lacks the option to power off the screen, it can go to lock screen instead which may be acceptable for some. there may be a different way to do this in tasker but i need to experiment more.
there is no external workaround for this as it is not the proximity sensor being uncovered that causes most problems but the phones orientation. any workaround or fix must be done with software or a change in a file somewhere.
I am sorry, and have been humbled •_•

This is correct. In simple terms the orientation sensor takes presidence over the proximity sensor. So if you turn the phone on its back while on the phone, the screen will turn on.
There are no fixes for it that I'm aware of.
How abt keeping auto-rotation off all the time, and turning it on only when needed, as a work around?

It's not linked to auto-rotation unfortunately, Its just something that we have to live with.
Man... wish there could be one but sounds like there can't be.

Can't reach the Power button - any other way to wake screen?

Loving my HTC One, but I have such small hands that I can hardly reach the Power button to wake it up after it goes to sleep!
Does anyone know of an app where I can use the Volume button instead?
Thanks in advance.
Only way to possibly assign the sleep/wake function to the volume buttons would mean having to be rooted. I don't know if anyone's made that change yet though, it might just require editing a single file. Don't have any experience with This myself so not 100%. Just know it requires root.

After a quick search online I've discovered Auto Screen On in the Play Store, which lets me double tap the proximity sensor (left of top speaker) to wake it up.
Works perfectly but an app using the Volume button would be much better.
With this app your screen has to be awake all the time and will drain your battery i think.
On TrickDroid v2.0.0 u can choose VolWake in Aroma

Moved your thread to the proper section for you. Please remember to post only in the correct sections. Thanks.
I've heard of some app for a nexus 4 that allows you to just swipe the screen and it turns on. Not sure what it was called, but you get the concept.
Good job I have big hands really because this nor generally using the phone is an issue due to its size.

I'm assuming sweep2wake or swipe2wake will eventually be implemented. It's basically swiping left to right on the capacitive buttons to wake the phone.
The One X had it, but it was a bit buggy when I used it in terms of it not working if the phone was asleep for a long time. I got rid of my One X a while ago though so idk how the feature works now and if they figured it all out., but I expect it to get implemented on the HTC One eventually.
The proximity sensor isn't a bad idea, jailbroken iPhone 5 etc...have the always on proximity where if you cover the proximity it'll turn the screen off and eventually lock the phone after a while. So you can put it in your pocket and it will turn the display off, bring it out of pocket and it comes on without needing to slide to unlock or anything. It's good if your messaging constantly.

iirc showp1984 said he's getting a htc one, and see oz did too so hopefully one of them will bring sweep to wake Zarboz did an excellent job on the incredible s and he doesn't even have the device
Sweep to wake generally doesn't work sometimes in deep sleep. I use vol wake and the. Sweep to go to sleep on my incredible s now s2w is actually the greatest thing ever

How to stop screen for turning off when on call?

Ok so the sensor is VERY sensitive when I make calls. Everytime I call my bank and it asks to enter my account number while it's on speakerphone...my fingers don't even get close to the speaker and my screen shuts off until I put my finger far away.
Is there any way to improve or turn this off? It gets annoying when you are on the phone and trying to multi task and screen keeps turning off even though your not even close to the sensor
That is surprising because proximity sensor should be off when on speakerphone. Did you install any app which could directly affect proximity sensor? Maybe factory reset would fix that.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
Yes it works like that but ur hands to close to the ear piece. Mind does that till I switch hands
BAD ASS NOTE 4 & GEAR S
When Im on the phone with somebody and i receive a text I could never use the scroll option to bring the bar down because of the sensor. What I do is hit the power button on the side of the phone, then hit it again and sign in with my code, then i dont have the sensor problem anymore. I will still be on the phone and Im at the homescreen. Thats the only way around it for me. its real quick too.
Solution
I am on the phone all day and need the screen to not time out because I am on and off the mute button a lot.
I use Call Light to make sure I always have the screen on when on a call.
Hope that helps some.
