I've mostly sussed out backing up apps now, but is there any reliable way to backup/restore other settings like homescreen icons, widgets, etc?
I'm planning to go from a Hero build to a Rogers - that might complicate things too!

I don't think you can do that, because to go from Hero to Rogers you will have to wipe. If you have a back-up of your Rogers already then you can switch back and forth between that and Hero by using restore. Plus, they have completely different settings and what not.
cool thanks...

Hi there :
I am sorry if this question have being discuss already, but I did search in the Q&A area and haven't found a solution.
I am using drizzy 2.7 Hero and waiting for 2.9 to upgrade. My problem and I am sure of many others, is that I would like to make the upgrade and will like be able to get back all the setting I have put in the phone. For example the scene (wallpaper, witgets), location info, settings for keyboard, emails, spelling, wifi settings and passwords, etc. I am using Backup for Root Users, but still I don't get most of the settings back when I do the restore. For example my yahoo email settings don't get back to the mail application. It does get my sms back and the applications but still I need to put so many settings back that is tedious. I am sure you are wondering why I put so much work if I am going to upgrade 2 or 3 days later. But where is the fun of using a new rom if you don't play with it and make it work like you want it too.
I think that the problem maybe that Backup for Root Users is meant for cupcake and not hero. So it doesn't backup all that is necessary. Anyone has a better method or script that will apply specifically for the Hero roms.
Thanks in advance.
My Backup Pro works pretty well for backup up settings. I used it for hero and it worked perfectly. There's a free 30 day trial version. The paid one well you have to pay for

No problem! Sorry for the confusion
ok first, lets say i want to go from cyanogen 4.0.4 to 4.1.9.2(or whatever is the latest)
and i think i need to wipe and flash. ok so is there anyway i can do this and then restore my settings/homescreen ? i know theres nandroid.. but i was told it wouldnt work because if i restored the nandroid it would just take me back to my older rom. i also know thers backup for root users.. but its a little confusing to me and i dont really know how to use it properly =/
(ive seen the guide "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=527997&page=3" but it looks a little outdated..)
how what should i do to keep my settings/appsettings when updating to new roms?
ALSO, is there any hero apps? like that one that like the picture frame on the g1, except with this one it has an album, and you can swipe and switch pictures!.. or music app? any other hero apps? though i also heard theyre strongly tied in with the hero framework.. but the album app doesnt seem that difficult to make but i wouldnt know lol.
THANKS in advance
I don't think you need to wipe for going cyan -> cyan, I never had a problem with it. HTC music has been out, check the the dev section.

What is the best (most painless) way to go from donut to eclair and keep your apps and data?
Do you just have to redownload all of them or is there a way to back them up such that you can access them in the new build?
I know you can't restore data from a backup made in a different version, but is there any other way?

What is the benefit of going to Eclair? I know Eclair on Vogue has the following issues. Correct me, if I'm wrong.
cons of Eclair:
no camera
unstable and slow
battery drain

1. correct, no camera
2. May not be as fast as donut, but it is fast and stable
3. Pretty close to the same battery life for me, good for a couple days with light use
the benefits I see are more eye candy and the facebook integration is pretty cool, along with the slide lock screen and live wallpapers and whatnot
I have mssmison's 2.1 on nand and myn's donut on my ext2, its pretty cool to be able to go back and forth, plus you can show it off to your friends if ya want
all in all 2.1 is catching up as mssmison is doing a great job

That's promising.
I have a question. Does voice command fully work on mssmison?
For example, will "navigate to home" work?

I just tried it, and it started up navigation just fine. I don't have a place set as "home" so it didn't take me anywhere, though
So I am brand spankin new to Android, just got my thunderbolt. I am not wanting to root or unlock or whatever its called, did that with my Imagio, too much work if you ask me. Plus the wife was pissed, happy wife, happy life.
Anyway, I have made a few graphical changes, minimilistic text, live wallpaper, nothing major. But wondering about LauncherPro and ADW.
If I install and don't like what they do, how easy is it to switch back to Sense? Can I leave them on or will they have to be removed? Since I am a noob to Android, don't want to screw up my new system, or bog it down with programs I can't get rid of.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

All you have to do to return to your stock launcher is uninstall whatever launcher you installed.
In other words, very easy.

After you install adw or launcher pro on your handset when you hit the home key you will be given the option to choose which home replacement you want to use, so install adw and you will get a pop box asking you to select adw or sense. Select the one you want then hit ok.
If you then want to change back head in to the settings menu click applications, the select which ever home application you picked and then click on clear defaults, hit your home button and you will once again get the pop up asking you to select your home replacement.
Or you can just uninstall the app either from the market or from the applications list.
Some aspects of sense won't work if you use adw or launcher pro, primarily the sense widgets.
When you run adw or launcher pro over the top of sense, sense is still running behind so you may find that a bit more memory is getting eaten up but the thunderbolt is a decent phone so I wouldn't worry about it to much.
Sent from my Nokia 3210 using XDA Premium App
Or you can use homesmack to switch between launchers
Hello,
Just wondering what the easiest way to preserve your apps and homescreens when switching Roms.
With all of these crazy JB roms coming out I want to try them all out. However, I've spent a lot of time organizing and downloading apps.
I know there's Titanium Update(?), which I have used in the past, but is there anything else?
How do you guys do it?
Thanks.
