Going from Donut to Eclair - Touch CDMA Android Development

What is the best (most painless) way to go from donut to eclair and keep your apps and data?
Do you just have to redownload all of them or is there a way to back them up such that you can access them in the new build?
I know you can't restore data from a backup made in a different version, but is there any other way?

What is the benefit of going to Eclair? I know Eclair on Vogue has the following issues. Correct me, if I'm wrong.
cons of Eclair:
no camera
unstable and slow
battery drain

1. correct, no camera
2. May not be as fast as donut, but it is fast and stable
3. Pretty close to the same battery life for me, good for a couple days with light use
the benefits I see are more eye candy and the facebook integration is pretty cool, along with the slide lock screen and live wallpapers and whatnot
I have mssmison's 2.1 on nand and myn's donut on my ext2, its pretty cool to be able to go back and forth, plus you can show it off to your friends if ya want
all in all 2.1 is catching up as mssmison is doing a great job

That's promising.
I have a question. Does voice command fully work on mssmison?
For example, will "navigate to home" work?

I just tried it, and it started up navigation just fine. I don't have a place set as "home" so it didn't take me anywhere, though

SenseHero Ported, Nand and sd

Alright, I've been meaning to do this a while;
Jamezelle asked me to port his Sense Hero build over to the new installation method a while back but I've been really caught up with my personal build. Now that I'm at a level I'm comfortable with I had some time to do this for James.
Bear in mind this is a cupcake based build, so alot of the new work we've done to tweak android won't work here. But it was good then and it's just as good now
Please don't use the 'orange' launcher on setup. I just realized now after uploading 100MB that I put in a donut launcher that won't work in cupcake. so just use rosie.
I've tweaked it a little, including userinit on boot etc.
It is nandable. Boot up is slow because it isn't odexed however once up and running it runs as good as.. well as good as it did before.. lol

also you dont need to format your card for donut and above. so if you had started out with donut or eclair and didnt format your card thats probably why. cause i had to format my sdcard when i was using cupcake but then i had got a new sdcard and immediately switched to donut but never formatted my sdcard and it worked. just throwing out some possibilities

I love the Hero, thanks so much! I think it's running even faster than the tatoo, but since it's cupcake, all the wifi updates I have for donut and eclair don't work for the cupcake (I tried and with no luck), it would be perfect for daily use if the wifi is working, anyway, appreciate for your work!
Thanks for all the info guys. I love the senseui in this SenseHero build…but I honestly miss Myn's Warm Donut. It is the most fast and reliable build I have tried for the vogue. Even with the Market working in the SenseHero build, it lags to much to me. I will really miss using the mail, sms, album, and calendar widgets that are in this build. Does any one know if I could just take the apk's of the widgets out of the data/apps to insert into the ported Hero theme in Myn's Warm Dount?

Tips to speed up my phone?

So I am running fresh, and I love it, 2.1 is awesome, but I can't stand the keyboard lag. Turning off optic doesn't help me that much and everything else is off. So my question is, dies anybody have tips for me to speed my phone up? Short of course of overclocking my phone? Also I love and use sense. Thanks in advance!

Some people will say use swype, some will say they don't have lag, some will say no matter what you do there will be lag, some will say "Why didn't you do a search for this"
Do a search in the forum and you will find plenty of threads with possible solutions.
I get very little lag.
Download auto killer, set it to the most aggressive setting and try it out. You can always adjust it from there.
Keeping free memory up helps a ton.

i know this is just a suggestion and ull get a ton of these but im using the original aosp keyboard with no voice to text or anything and get next to no lag. i think its the voice to text that is messing everything up. do a searcvh and find it and try it
i have found a solution to everyones problems, try this keyboard out in the market called thickbuttons it doesnt lag at all and its freakin sick
Yeah I've done the searches and tried all the fixes/ suggestions. I will try the thinkbuttons thing, but I don't like swype. Anyways, I'll look into enabling JIT on fresh, I haven't done that since I was on Darchdroid. Thanks alot! Any other tips for speeding things up? Does a2sd speed the phone up?

on that note i have a question...How can i remove my app2sd, till i get a better chip? my hero was flying till i installed it on my stock chip. Now i need to undo, so what reformat? got to b an easier way??
I think you can make an EXT backup, but I'm not sure how to do it short of manually taking everything from /system/sd/app and moving it to /data/app

Hit up Damagecontrol 2.08.1, he included a new lighter keyboard that doesn't lag anywhere near as bad, the only real problem is the fact that the vibration feedback is sometimes messy, but I just turned it off. Otherwise it types like a dream.
Also, Damageless is customizing that latest 2.1 leak that came from Sprint, and in 2.08.1 there's DCUpdater, which allows you to update directly from the phone itself without a complete wipe. I strongly recommend it, it's got what you're looking for and more.

Sorry bro, but thick buttons has such a terrible learning curve. If you stare while typing, sure it works. But if you type faster than you can process what key gets larger, it isn't for you.
Do you have lag anytime you use the keyboard, or just when sending texts?
I know I had bad lag with the stock KB and the HTC MMS app.. but I have since switched over to the AOSP Mms.apk, and I have no lag in it at all.
Sorry to budge in, but I have had the same problem for a while now, I love the layout and prediction of the HTC keyboard (XDA) but the lag is annoying. For a while I used the AOSP mms.apk and all was well, but I couldn't send pic messages, let alone view them.
Is there a way to get around that and still have AOSP?

I use the AOSP Mms.apk on RegawMOD. Works just fine. Try repushing?
It hasnt been re-released yet, but I love TouchPal. You can still find the apk on rapidshare or hit me up and I can send it to you. You can turn off haptic feedback and make it scream and it has all the functionality of the HTC keyboard and then some.

Load up Zen's latest ROM - I kid you not - any questions?
I finally have no lag. I have no lag period even when I run pandora. I run purehero with the regular htc.ime. that was one of my main goals in finding a faster rom.

As long as you are using it on a low res screen like the hero, the attached apk should work. If you need it for something higher res like the droid, I think I have the APK at home. There are a lot of settings for this, so play around until you find a set that works. I suggest turning of the haptic feedback because that seems to slow down all keyboards on the hero.

Froyo over CyanogenMOD?

My N1 is rooted running CyanogenMOD 5.0.7.1, color trackball alerts, the Desire Camera, Helix Launcher, etc... basically all the goodies. I know a lot of people in my situation went back to stock and flashed the pre-release Froyo. My question is why? I watched the Google I/O conference and yeah, Froyo looks great, but it doesn't seem like there's anything (other than Flash) that Froyo can do that all these custom ROM's out there can't. Is there something in Froyo I'm missing that I can't get in these custom ROM's? I'm thinking about just waiting until Cyanogen comes out with his own custom Froyo ROM....
I think it's the google apps that are different. they look good and work better. for me the Froyo didn't had the bugs that where in eclair. Btw the live wallpapers work better on froyo.
Mainly - Flash, JIT and a speedier browser. Nothing that can't wait for a month.
Browser speed is enough for me, since that's what I use most on my phone.
- JIT
- Flash
- Chrome to Phone
- Install to SD (without having to deal with creating the SD partitions)
- Froyo Radio is more stable/reliable (from my own experiences anyway)
I'm also using pershoot's .34 kernel and LauncherPro and the overall "experience" is excellent.
Way better than CM5.0.7.x? No, but it was enough for me to jump on the bandwagon.
i'm the opposite kinda, i am using cm 507 and WANT to try out froyo, but not sure if its gonna be worth it cause A) i dont wannt burn in my screen any worse with that horrible white notification bar, and B) not sure about the new radio update (is it better or worse?).

A burn isnt because froyo. It isnt even a burn it isnt annoying me. I even can barely see it. I have my nexus almost 4 months and always used white bar and the burn is almost invisible i had to lool closely to see it
B for me the new radio is way better have more bars. The 3g speed at home has improved. So i am happy with it
You can try froyo if you dont like it go back to cm.

the burn in i'm talking about is when using the standard white notification bar. this has been permanently burning in your screen and many people have it including me. since froyo cant truly change the notification bar color, using froyo will continue to worsen your screen using that horrid white notification bar. this is why i'm hesitant on switching.
about the new radio, i've read both good and bad. some people love it, and others hate it. so i dont know which to believe until i try it myself. again, this is the reason i havent yet jumped at froyo. of course i could always switch back if i dont like it. but laziness....
Bluetooth implementation is better in Froyo with my headset at least. For that alone I won't go back
If you're worried about burn in, the latest version of launcherpro lets you hide the notification bar.
I'm currently using it, my notification bar is hidden, and I'm on completely stock 2.1 unrooted rom.
I was happily running CM5.0.7.1 and decided to try FroYo. I found that the benefits were no where near enough to outweigh the excellent features I was missing from CM (not least the themes).
In the end I decided to go back (although in the process managed to brick my phone in a new and never-before-seen way but thats another story!)
In any case, the FroYo that is about turned out to be a non-final version that was pushed out by mistake. Google has since withdrawn it.
My advice is to just wait until the FroYo code is in AOSP and Cyanogen releases a CM6 branch based on it.
CM6(when it appears)>rooted 2.2>CM5.0.7>2.1 Which is why I'm using 2.2

Works on froyo. Only hides the notification bar when you are on homescreens. To bring it down you just hit the menu button, and it'll show.

I agree with you. It all depends on what you use your phone for. The things named up above is what matters most to me. Little customizations like themes. I have apps that are taking advantage of jit, there is no way I'm going back to cyanogen until next release. If apps2sd didn't work then I would go back but even that works
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
I upgraded from CM5.0.6 to Froyo. I loved the JIT and the new Gmail app, but in the end it was a wee bit too unstable for me for daily use, so I went back to 5.0.6 and then upgraded to 5.0.7.
My Froyo has proven VERY stable for me.
I love the new Gmail app, now I can receive Gmail from my other account and stop having to forward everything.
JIT? man oh man, I love how my Nexus flies now!
It is noticeable faster than before!!
Apps2SD was never a concern for me, as I keep things to a minimum.
Will I go back to Cyanogen?
Nope.
But I will upgrade to a Cyanogen powered 2.2

This is nice...
I just installed in my vogue, and all work as well.
Camera work fine, with the setting pop-up when i touch the icon, except for zoom function, if i touch it, camera would stop.
With task killer, i see 2 running services that usually not show up in other build.
"android keyboard" and "pl.magot.vet..."
does it took a lot of memory ?
it won't close at all..
EDIT : it's ancal process, can i uninstall it as well as GPS test, because my vogue doesnt have GPS.
Hope would be more performance improvement with next release, and might be some black theme as default...
Btw, eclair + no data plan and app replacement would be nice to have.
Thank you th3lolz for this build,
i think i will keep it run it my vogue untill there's a new release with more light build.
Here's another one, while the screen locked, signal bar would present the actual signal of the phone, when you unlocked it, the signal bar would drop, but looks like it doesnt effect when i making a call.

You could try to unpack the androidupdate.tar and your android ROM you like, find the different, do some adjustment script, and repackage it again. I think you could use some different theme for your android....

Yes, i already try all the android from all dev;
all incubus android, all myn's android, also dzo and Kallt_Kaffe, and i prefer to choose your build for my daily use.
With incubus' build, it also happen, and all things more slower then your build, and i prefer to choose not using rogue tools for more battery life.
With your build there's no need to use rogue tools.
And more clean from unused apps and more responsive when i push some button ( -menu, dialer, home, etc ... )
Sorry if i ask you too much...
and thanks for your support...

Good ROM for Hero?

Hey All,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm tired of the version 2.1 stock ROM for the Sprint Hero. Even when its rooted and I clean out all the bloatware its still sluggish, buggy, and it has lately been aggravating me to no end. I want a nice lightweight ROM that has everything working (radio, wifi, data, etc.) but I don't want the HTC Sense UI if possible. Also, if it could have built in wifi tether (because all the apps I've used on the stock ROM tend to lock up or reboot the device) that would be great. Also, Apps2SD would also be nice but not a requirement.
Can someone recommend a good one?
Thanks in advance!

you are posting in the way wrong section this would have been better suited in general or Q&A
but my recommendation for you would be CM7 the official release for the HeroC, its stock android with some flavor. good battery life, apps2sd supported via built in manager (added in 2.2). built in tethering in the device settings menu (AOSP 2.3 feature) and last but not least it's AOSP based so SenseUI is nowhere to be found
I have tried all and in my mind the fastest has been hero deck. I even turned down my MHz to 691 when I use to have it at 768.
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
Deck's rom is fast....No doubt, but.....if you're looking for a blend of speed and stability I'd listen to ThoughtlessKyle and go with CM7. That is what I put back on my Hero for my son to use.

I'll definitely look into both ROMs. Thanks for the help!
My stock rom ran into issues the other day. Force close loop on senseui or something. Basically required a factory reset so while I was at it I decided to put a new rom on. I went with CM7. Had done a bunch of reading in the past and everyone was using CM6 then. Its nice. The one thing I didnt like is the voicemail. Getting it setup to download my voicemails to the phone was kinda a pain and the annoying texts from 9016 get old quick. Not sure why there is no solution for this. And running a separate program to block messages from 9016 isnt really a solution in my opinion.
I hear that deck rom has voicemail working with no additional installation/config necessary and none of the 9016 text messages so I plan to give it a try.
