Quick Question - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK I need some Opinions On what i Should do. Should I stay On The Dudes Custom Rom or Goto The Hero Rom??
Thanks

heres a few steps
1. Sit down and read threads for both roms
2. Search and read some more
3. Go over all the reading you just did
4. decide which rom you think you would like to run

What you should do is stop capitalizing the first letter of every word. (I find it iron that you capitalize most words but not the second "i" )
That's your choice. Cupcake runs great, Hero is sexy, either way you make a compromise. Personally I'm waiting for Drizzy's "Dopod" ROM, an update for the Hero phone itself which makes the phone faster, and should run faster on our G1's too.
If you want to try Hero I'd reccomend "JacxHeroskiv" with a 64mb swap partition.

Seriously though, please don't post questions like this again, just read up on it.

I apoligize i usually dont do that in forums. But I will read up on it and use the search feature i just needed a few opinions from others that have switched between roms. But again thanks i will re-read

The dudes rom is good but has not been updated in awhile.
You want speed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537204
You want cool but hard to use everyday http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=546984
You will see if you have not already. Hero is cool for the weekend but for me CM's is the bees knees for everyday use.

What is the problem, this so called community I've heard about is not much of a community is it.
There's no need for it at all.
Can someone please offer some real advice.
Ok, here is a real advice:
Please read the tutorials.
I have, but the one I am reading shows an old JF1.41 rom, when I looked at the other roms it says things like only for 36b phones ect..... It's confused me a little because tho I am amature techy I am also extra cautious and dont want to brick my phone.
Would I be ok using CyanogenMod [v3.9.7] && Palm Pre theme [1.8] ported for instance
I think the reason people are being a bit hostile is because you posted a question in the development section. That may seem OTT but there are some days when the whole first page of the development section is filled up with questions.
Before you flash a cupcake ROM (cyanogen, JF) you will need the new radio. I'm not entirely sure if you can flash that radio on RC7 or whether you will need to install a custom ROM first (like JF's RC9) so if someone could clear that up that would be useful. It can be found here. Copy that to your SD, name it update.zip and flash. Then you can flash a Cyanogen or any other cupcake ROM. That particular ROM you were talking about sounds like it was ported to the HTC Magic/Sapphire. Only flash ROMs from the dream section.

Hi mate, I wouldnt flash 3.9.7 if you only just rooted your phone, go with the stable v3.6.8.1 first, then use Nandroid recovery to create a backup. Then worse case scenario you can always restore that image if needed.
There's a good reason 3.9.7 is marked as experimental, and there is alot to learn before attempting any Hero roms etc.
If you get stuck with anything feel free to shoot me a PM Im always around and happy to help.
Long time lurker first time poster btw
Thanks guys, I will not post in this section again and sorry to those I have upset, would hve been nice to have been simply told.
Thanks for the help.

Wow that was by far the hardest groaned I have ever seen in my few months on xda!
People are just tired of everybody posting in devolpment when there is a q and a section, and when there are 20 to 30 new threads that have already been discussed, the devolpers get annoyed. Go with the stable version of cyanogen's rom, flash the new radio image and get yourself the hard spl, not the special, if you see warnings, run very far away. Install the s a lifesaver
ahem...
I wasn't hostile before, attempting to be civil now.
You posted two questions in the development forum. The first was regarding root. There are numerous tutorials available on this forum and even more via a simple google search. I know this because I read them, learned the process inside and out and successfully rooted my phone within the first hour of owning it. So yeah, I made a joke about a hard working mod having to move your thread... no personal attack so whatever.
Your second question was an open ended request for what are basically opinions. There are a number of great custom roms being developed here on XDA and all of them are unique in their own way. Roms like HERO and Cyan's experimental rom are definitely not for newcomers and the threads posted by their developers clearly state the risks involved in attempting to run them. 15 minutes in the dev forum and you could have made an educated decision on your own. One post in Q&A and you would have gotten much friendlier responses but in the end, you'd still have to choose your own adventure.
Let me make one thing clear...
I'm not a dev. I'm an end user who tries to contribute something useful to this forum and learns a whole bunch in the process. I've offered help to many people via PM and replies in threads (as long as the discussion is on-topic) but over time I've come to the realization that simply handing out information instead of forcing you to find it on your own actually does a disservice to not only the forum, but YOU as a user. So hate on us all you want. I think you'll find that following forum rules in the future will make your experience here a happier one, and snarky comments like yours are better left un-submitted.
To answer your question: I started with JF's 1.5 rom and think it was a great way to gain exposure to the world of custom roms and root. A lot has changed since then and things have actually become a lot easier since cyanogen released his recovery image w/ nandroid and tools like switchrom came out. Its now very easy to hop between roms and there are fewer chances you'll screw something up in the process. Personally, I've been sticking with Cyanogen's roms since 3.4.6, and though there have been some bumps in the road I've had very few issues and am currently working with his 3.9 experimental builds.
Hope you get where I'm coming from, good luck to you in the future.

For X1...

I just want a ROM that is:
1. Unintsallable
2. Fast, stable and glitch-free.
3. Panel install only
4. Should only require soft-reset
5. should look exactly like HTC's interface
6. Landscape mode preferred.
As you may have guessed, im a noob. But I just wanted to know as there is like a sea of ROMs and it becomes very difficult for a person not very knowledgable like me to pick one. I just want 2 things most importantly, that it shud be panel-installable and shud support landscape mode, along wiht being stable.
Thanx a ton guys!!
I don't understand your 1st and 3rd point. All roms can be replaced.
I personally dislike having Touchflo as is a bit unstable for me. If you want 6.5 I've used this for weeks, the barebones version, link and its been pretty stable on me.
Read other threads asking about rom choices too, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=590874
sweet..by
1. i meant it can be uninstalled if it gives some problem...(i raed sumwhere its a pain to remove it from ur system)
and
3. by that i meant, that it is only installed in a panel, not in the whole sys..as in i dont want the OS to change, i want X1 OS but only one panel can be HTC's touch flo

Read what I typed above in red.
tahnx Im Packing...
though i get your humour(and frustration with the number of noob questions being asked everyday)
but plz understand, I am an original noob. I dont understand wht u mean by "cook your ROM"
also, the very fact i have posted this Question, is that there are so many ROMs.
Like see, there are many ways to run a Mac on ure PC (iAtkos, Kalyway etc) but I used Kalyway..so here i cant find my Kalyway...
is ITJE's ROM good??heard about it...
plz suggest specific ROM so that i dont have to do a lot of RND with my (brand new) phone...thanx a lot once again.
Here is my suggestion for you. Just try a rom for one week and see which one fit you the best. It's very easy ans SAFE to install new rom and every rom has it plus and minus. I personally install different rom every other date because i want to have the newest stuff for my phone.
I think you misunderstand what ROMs are. I think you should read the Wiki first. Then read the stickies. Then if you have questions try searching first, and then you should fire away with questions.
The questions you are posing now are not ROM related they are software related. If you really want to flash a ROM then you should first read what a ROM (Read-Only Memory) is and why you would want to flash one and what HARD-SPL is and how to prevent bricking. If you are not ready for a custom ROM then perhaps you should just stick to some of the many cabs that are available here.
Hopefully this will give you a starting place. Just opening a thread to ask nonsensical things is not going to be productive for you, and will only confuse or irritate more experienced members. If you have a basic understanding everything should fall into place after that. Good luck.
Thanx Hannigan174..i appreciate ure help and apologize for posting this Question. u are right, i actually dont understand what ROMs are in trems of X1....
But i wil take ur suggestion...i wil first try out diff ROMs and then post a query...
I understand what you want: a theme or a application not flash your phone with another ROM, is it?
Try check this out... and this ... also try this
Also you may check this one and this
Good luck

did you ever flashed youre phone? there are alot of roms just like the one in the video. just pick a random manila 2.1 rom and ure done. i dont know why u want tf3d be uninstallable. u can just deactivate it. what means "should only require soft reset"? u dont want to flash ure phone but install tf3d via cabs instead? well then search for the thread, it is possible but aint that good and fast as a complete optimized rom

what you see is the Manila user-interface, can be any ROM currently had it cooked unless stated differently. And it can be of 2.1 or 2.5 (Leo), and installable under pure or clean rom.
Just read the stickies first under the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 ROM development thread. First step, you're going to need to flash HardSPL, then flash any ROM you like with the Manila interface.
This/URL] is one of the example, always read last pages to see the current issues on the latest build, then pick your choice

I dont really get it... what did you mean by unlocking ? and what 9 movies?
my micro SD card has 9 movies...MIB, da cinchi code..etc... can unlock it..i have a Sony Pictures app also..it lets me see the trailer of each film and then i can unlock the whole film..and watch it
the more i read, the more im gettin confused...there is this software on one hand cutsomRUU...
then there is a cab availbale, then there is also the hardUSPL or something...
this is just getting more complicated, im eading the sticky threads but to no avail....can any1 plz help me how to get whats in the video..step by step with links...plz, its a humble request...
everything is explained in this sticky thread. just follow the steps. do a backup of your important data before u start
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446070
but i really think u have no clue what u are facing by flashing ure device. every data on youre phone (not those on youre storage card) will be lost and all the programms u installed will be gone so u have to reinstall them after flash. by flashing ure device u will completely remove everything thats on ure phone and relace it with the new rom. did u ever updated youre device via seus?
the sony pictures app will be gone also and then u probably will not be able to watch your movies u have on youre card. unless u have this as a cab somewhere.
I've always recommended SPB Warehouse Backup. I made a thread, though nobody commented on it...but IMHO, and I gtrab and Siruis [X] are now using them, it's the best backup/restore program out there. It allows you to restore all your PIM and programs after flashing your phone.
The trial allows you to use it for 5 times before having to purchase a license. It's well worth it as custom ROMs are coming out every couple days or so, it saves time, effort, and the frustration of having to constantly restore your phone manually.

Questions about flashing ROMS

If I Wipe before flashing a new ROM, will this erase my user data like phone nums and programs settings??
Why does everything keep looking the same after I flashed TTG 1.6 with out wiping original?
Will flashing again after wiping make it bring up the themes by default??
Will the new Kernel enable BT and Camera on the ROMs that currently these do not work on once we flash over??
Thanks for the help
Wow.
Search engine?
Seriously Search and read that is how you learn. Are you that lazy
1. Yes
2. TTG 1.6 is not a 1.6 rom it is still a 1.5 rom so it will not look diff
3. NO and i am a little confused at to what you mean
4. NO

Dude, I spent 5 hours of my life(and will spend most of the next 2 weeks) reading the guides and the threads. 50+ pages threads to finely feel conftable on flashing my hero. U have to agree search is mediocre at best. Search for "nba" or "league pass" and u will get 0 results. Accidentally searching for something else I found 2 threads talking about nba league pass but the search still returned 0 results on nba or league pass. Now back to the subject:
Now that I have succesfully rooted my hero and installed custom rom, can u guys leed on what should I be searching for on the forum to enjoy to fullest the awesomeness of rooting?
ps. I love this forum and want to support it. After I'm done with my adventure I will create a thread with a "rooting for dummies" kinda thing to make life easier for new comers. Will include term definitions, links to guides and threads with customizations and links to donate to the devs.
I wasn't going to say anything about searching...but he does bring up a point. I spend far more time than I should have in searching how to compile Compcache with the CDMA Hero kernel source.
For you guys who are new to the ROM scene, Compcache is a kernel module that will take a portion of your main memory and use it as a compressed swap space, thus allowing you to run more programs at the cost of reduced main memory. It's perfect for people who don't run a swap partition on their SD card (which I do).
Now, I did what everyone on these forums complain about when someone who is new to the scene asks one of those questions that have been asked a few times...I searched these forums. My result: I found several posts on what Compcache is, a few on the internal mechanisms on how it works, and one posts that was related to GSM that was difficult to follow.
Searching more through Google, I found even more posts about what Compcache is and how to set it up (if you are using 2.6.29 kernel), but nothing about anyone compiling this.
Now, I know someone compiled it (it's in the Modaco kernel and the Gumbo kernel), but nobody's sharing information.
So, before we all go bounce on a new forum user like a cheetah on a three-legged antelope, perhaps you guys should search the forums for the answers and see how some of these questions the new forum users are asking are, in reality, not easy to find.
And for the new people out there...on page 1 of the this sub-forum, on the first and second entries, you will find a page pointing to a wiki entry (one each) that will tell you the available ROMs out there (and how to download them) and how to root your phone. So, before asking about how to root the phone or where can you get a ROM, check there. Or click on "The Darktremor" in my signature line. I have guides that will do the same thing (except rooting...I actually point back here for that since I actually thought the root guides were better than what I could write). However, if anyone wants me to build a rooting document (complete with pictures), let me know.
So, there's my opinion about it. I'm not going to say anymore on the topic.

I woke up one day and decided to root my G1. Did all of like an hour maybe 2 reading how to. Everthing after that is self explanatory imo.
With that said, its like 10 times simpler with the Hero. You can even use flipz auto root which requires virtually no effort. For those wanting to learn to root themselves, I pretty much wrote the "rooting for dummies" guide which is easily found via sticky wicki.
For all other inquiries, I have started a General/Hero Q&A thread. As a new comer, additions to this thread are highly valuable.
I have to say that Theresthatguy's thread on rooting is by far the best explanation of how to gain root without using the Pre-Kitchen (that is THE simplest way) and it helps you get familiar with using ADB and command line

Just got used G1. Request general status: current Android version; SenseUI

Hello, I just bought a used G1 off ebay, it's not rooted. (This phone is a temporary transition for me. My HTC Hero (GSM/ less than 6 months old) was just repaired by HTC America and now needs to go back for same problem. So I want to jumpstart my mod-process for G1. Normally I read everything from the start. I just cannot take that time now. So, I am hoping I can get some straight forward shortcut answers:
1. I know I can search & find, but i would like best link that gives total, clear instructions How to Root Your G1.
2. Can I get a recommendation on a ROM that has Hero theme and SenseUI, with at least 7 home screens, preferably 9.
3. Best link that describes "How to Install a ROM to G1"
4. What is the current ANdroid OS version running on most G1 Roms?
5. Will my 16gig MicroSD that's been in my Hero work fine just popping into G1?
Thanks and plenty of good karma to an answer that jumpstarts me fast. I need to be up and running in a day.

for sense ? besides king's 2.1 eclair hero no other RECENT hero roms are avail.
i know you can still find some 1.5 hero ports, mightymax 1.9.1 is pretty good.
install new roms, when the g1 came out it was real easy now you need a little prep before flashing roms (even after rooting)
you need to flash a new recovery, danger spl (universally works with every rom)
and a new radio+spl. MAKE SURE YOU FLASH THE RADIO FIRST
you can find real stable 1.6 roms (super D is my fav)
and you have pretty good 2.1 ports (open eclair is A+)
& if your looking for a hero/eclair rom it would be better if your 16gb was a class 6.

Thanks, that was very helpful; i appreciate it. There are times when it is just so unnecessary for one to be an asshole. Not you. Mr Asshole who posted before you. As it turns out, I did in fact search thoroughly yesterday and learned of king's roms, have links to 2 "how to root" guides.
As for the 16gig, I'm pretty sure it's class A. I will check. Yes, I was surprised in reading the guides how much of the rooting and modding process requires use of the SD card. I was busy for 3 years in the HTC Herald forum in Windows Mobile land. So back then Android and G1 were on the periphery of my mind. But that is what I heard from some of the chefs I worked with: that rooting a G1 was way simpler than hard SPL'ing a WM device.
Sounds like the processes are sort of equivalent now. That was helpful to hear just now because when I skimmed the guides last night, I was surprised at all the steps... it didn't match what I had heard a year ago when modding a G1 was new.

next the rom you want is mlign 3.2B hero rom, google for it or look around here. (3.3 will work)
make sure your partition layout is 128 swap 512 ext and rest fat32

Thank you, immensely helpful. My favorite T-Mobile Wing chef "Ivan" moved to Android and G1 about 9 months ago and has never looked back. That's how I feel since getting my Hero. Anyway, thanks much. I was trying not to sound like someone unwilling to do my own research... I do plenty of it. But at this stage of Android maturity and G1 mods, there are already MULTIPLE guides for rooting etc -- which was my original experience with my WM phones... So this is an aberration for me. I had an sudden immediate need and was just seeking some compass bearings.
I appreciate the jumpstart.

not downing you... just wanted to say your swap doesn't have to be that high or ext... i usually kept my ext around 256 when i had ext 3 and my swap has never been above 96. its not bad to have that much, but if you have a 4 gig im sure you want all the actual storage space you can have. however, if you have like a 16 gig feel free to have any size you want. just didn't want you to think you HAD to have it tha large.
you could go to Cyanogenmod.com and check the wiki great instructions on how to do pretty much everything you asked for running a hero rom requires making a swap, (most of them anyway) just follow the instructions completely when flashing SPL. Radio first!

Thanks much! So, since I have a 16gig, I have to go back and read what was the rec size for that.

[Q] Samsung Captivate - Best ROM For Begginers...

Hey Guys...
First of all - I am Amazed by the level of this forum... Its truly great...
I am Very new to XDA. I Still managed to figure out essential things for my captivate.
I spent straight 8 to 10hrs [Approx a Month ago] reading and searching variety of threads, links and videos and got the Idea about rooting, Custom ROM, Flashing etc...
[I must Repeat - "Just Idea", Because having no real background and knowledge about anything related to these things... I obviously feel like Still Missing a lot of basic terms]...
Anyways - Point for explaining all that is to Make my 'Beginner' Level clear... B'coz Members here called as beginners are also quite good with all these basic terms...
I am using 'LANIGHT' ROM right now...
Now the problem is... There are still some bugs in this version... [Camera, SMS, etc]
So the question is:
1. The Best, latest and most stable version of ROM out there - which would be great for beginners like us? [We can have this thread for the updates of such ROM time to time] - For Us - This part seems very difficult to figure out...
2. Also the process of installing that ROM...
3. And if there is a quick way to figure out the 1st question in forum... Except spending hours just reading the threads... Very very difficult work... [Hats of to you guys...]
Thanks in advance...

1. This question can't be answered. For many reasons but mainly because the Best ROM for you, that feels in your needs and such won't be the same as let's say, the best ROM for me. The best you can do if look at the features list and go through the last few pages of the ROM to know about the bugs/issues. There isn't a perfect ROM, just gotta find the one that suits you the best.
2. Follow the ROM's instructions in the OP (Don't forget the Gapps)
3. Refer to #1. Also, for respect for the Devs and to avoid flaming, threads like these often get closed.
Hey, we all start somewhere
Welcome and BWolf gave you some very sound advice. I've been flashing new ROMs pretty much on a daily basis this week to find the ROM that suits me the best. Enjoy flashing and playing around with different ROMs. The nice thing about this phone is that pretty much there are ways to revive it if something "happens."

Dude hats off to you. Very correct. Even I flash ROMs almost daily. The worst thing ever happened to me was a boot loop and a home made jig saved me. Now I have a confidence that nothing can stop my phone.

Choosing a rom is a hit and trial method. Just go to captivate android development forum and choose any rom which looks good download it and flash it using recovery. Most common thing is clockwork mod recovery to install any ROM. keep flashing different roms until you find the one that suits you. Happy flashing.

I used to hold off buying a jig... until I truly needed one. Thanks to one click odin and heimdall, if anything happens, then you're always good to flash back to stock and try again
I highly recommend a jig as it can save you from a LOT of headache.

You can buy one or build it yourself. It's a great investment and insurance plan
Feel free to flash whatever Captivate ROM you like, just pay attention to the flashing procedures in each thread (as Bwolf said).

Beginners like you? IMHO, there are lots of different beginners and you haven't shared enough for me to know what kind of beginner you are.
By recent and best, do you mean that you just want a stock ROM, perhaps rooted, but otherwise pretty much the same as the last stock release, Gingerbread KK4? It is 'recent' - because it is the latest and final official release, more recent than earlier releases.
Or do you want a ROM that is unofficial, won't be supported by your carrier or by Samsung, but that runs Jelly Bean 4.2 with an occasional bug or broken feature?
Beginner is relative to the field in question, yes? An Olympic gold medal swimming winner in his first year in medical school is a beginner at surgery,
Do you excel at really carefully reading and understanding all instructions before you start on a task?
So, if you are starting as a complete newbie, maybe go for KK4 Gingerbread and add the Corn Kernel. Get stable with that. Get comfortable making nandroid backups, and using root browsers to back up efs and other folders. get comfortable moving the files to your pc, to the external sd card, etc.
After getting all the stuff backed up with good knowledge about how to restore it all, then go flash a stable 4.1 or 4.2 jelly bean rom. you will need to flash twice. oh, and get gapps, too.
does this all sound like jibberish? read the sticky threads, read the glossaries, etc,.
If you're looking for a ROM with a lot of UI and benchmark improvements, Captivating by Sephi looks great, although I haven't tried it myself. No one here really wants to pick 1 specific ROM, because everyone is different and don't want to be rude to the dev's .
Flashing ROMs on the Captivate is fairly simple, and as others have stated if you have a jig (if you don't want to buy one pre-made, you can make your own w/o soldering, there's a guide in this forum for it), you can just play around with different ROMs and can almost always fix the phone if anything bad should happen.
Just browse XDA until you find one that you think you may like, read the reviews, and try it out for yourself
I recommended Captivating ROM by she phi.. U will not disappointed

I consider myself a beginner and I like Cyanogenmod 10.1. I am using the nighties and I find it quite stable and easy to update.
