Bricked Rogers HTC Dream - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
This is a repost from a wrong forum. Sorry guys
I have a HTC Dream which I guess I tried unsuccessfully to root. I used the method to load the software as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=130
At step 10, "10.Apply “update.zip”, wait until phone idles, then press the HOME + BACK buttons. It will reboot, finish writing “hboot.img”, then reboot again into Recovery mode by itself. Do not interrupt it at all until it's done."; I think I followed it verbatem only to find my phone is now in a constant boot loop
It shows a Rogers logo and I'm unable to boot into any mode (recovery or otherwise) with any key combo (I've tried Camera+Power, Home + Power/End) but the phone doesn't respond and keeps showing the Rogers screen.
I saw some instructions on what to do when this happens. One suggestion was to copy DREAIMG.nbh to the SD-Card and try booting with the Camera +End Button sequence, but the phone doesn't respond at all).
Any ideas on what can be done? Is it bricked? I can see the logo and I know it boots...perhaps the bootloader is trashed and needs to be reinstalled. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

LOL, ok, I'll bite.....
Unfortunately all the same responses from the other thread you started still apply. Have you taken any of the advice from AdrianK?

Your link to the post you followed is invalid....I don't know much about the rogers process, but it sounds like if you are unable to get any key combos to work then your bricked.

I guess you are right. The phone does boot. It simply stays at the boot screen showing the rogers logo. Taking the battery turns if off. No response any key combos and it doesn't show up anywhere with adb/fastboot when connected to USB. Any ideas or hopes?

What happens when you put the battery back in? Comes on by itself and starts bootlooping or do you have to turn it on? If you have adb setup properly, you can run the ddms.bat file that's in the tools folder of the sdk. With you phone plugged in via usb, run a logcat and follow it for a while....if it starts repeating over and over, then its a definite bootloop. That, combined with you not getting any key combos to work suggests a brick

The phone does not turn on, when the battery is put in. Only hitting the power button, which is when it vibrates slightly and becomes unresponsive. Given what I'm seeing, its doing something...the devices become hot until the battery runs out.
I did setup adb (and java for ddms.bat). Though there is no output in logcat (Simply Failed at the top). I've tried various key (Home+Power Camera+power etc) combinations to see if it burbs, but nothing.
Any ideas on what I can try. I'm fairly good with linux/unix and setting up development environments. Thanks.

If it's looping on the second screen, then you're not bricked. If I was to guess, maybe your SD is not partitioned correctly for the ROM you're flashing...if I was to guess.

Hmm...where is this second screen? I unfortunately have no output (from the time I hit power to any useable/known key combos ) on my mmda.bat java interface. None whatsoever. Is there a way to see the raw data thru USB to see what it does when it boots up? And if so, how?

Same problem here

same problem here, the device comes on when the power button is pressed, a slight vibrate confirms this, then just hangs on "HTC Dream" screen.
Tried every key combo I can find to no avail, please, anybody help!!!!

[Q] Phone Bricked, need help with getting into download mode!

Hi all,
My phone is now bricked with the phone--!--pc symbol on bootup, and I tried to search for solutions everywhere but no go. Please please help me with this as I don't have unlimited warranty on this phone... and won't be able to exchange...
So, the root of the problem is that the normal hold down volume + plug in cable OR hold down three buttons until it reboots twice to go into download mode will not work on my phone! nothing happens at all when I try that, (I even tried every single button combination and holding them for a period of time...)
Here is what happened:
I wanted to get Froyo running on my phone, so I tried to follow directions using the Froyo leak.
I tried to get it into download mode when the phone was running and operational. None of the normal methods would work (volume button OR three button combo)
I eventually got it to go into download mode by using adb, and typing command adb reboot download.
adb got my phone into download successfully, i see the shovel, odin sees my phone, i was happy and started the odin process on my computer.
3 hours passed... odin was stuck at DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET message, phone was still showing the shovel
I thought something must have gone wrong and tried to start the process again.
This is where I am now, adb will no longer recognize the phone, and none of the button combinations will get me to download mode, all I see is the phone--!--PC symbol on startup.
I really have tried to search everywhere for a solution to this, but other than the 2 buttons+plug cable OR three button reboot twice, I can't find another way that will either allow me to get into download mode and try odin again, or just do a factory recovery.
Thank you guys so much! I really need some help on this one....
I don't suppose your battery is dead? Something to try - put the phone on your charger for about half an hour, then take the battery out for about 5 minutes. Make sure your sim/sd cards are removed, then install the battery, hold both volume buttons down, and connect the usb cable from the pc to your phone.
You can also make a download jig, which I'm told works wonders.

I was hoping that I don't have to go with the full out hardware solution, but I guess that's the way this piece of brick is demanding...
will update on what happened. thanks, kegobeer!

I am in the hope that now you can shed some light for me.
Not sure if you guys have seen this post or not, but just in case you can get into download mode somehow, this may help get your 3 button working again. There may also be some people in the same position as you that may have posted in this tread.

The way I have been doing it is by getting Odin running, hold the vol up and vol down then plugging in the usb. I'm sure you may have already tried it that way, but just in case you used the pwr and one of the vol buttons instead, I thought I would mention it.
I know there have been problems with some people's hardware too, so there is a possibility of that.
not every phone has the button combo for download mode. it sounds like your boned, you should of talked to a few people before trying this kind of thing, its not hard but can easily be done wrong.
Look up on my posts in my profile I help a lot of people already going to download mode without using 3 button combo.

[Q] HTC Hero Bootloop

A friend of mines son was installing roms on his HTC Hero and bootlooped it. I've followed all the methods I could find to put this thing in a flash mode, or a recovery mode but all it does is flash the HTC logo. Home/End seems to be the way to get into the recovery mode but it does nothing.
Can you put this thing into a flash only mode and at least get it to its original state? It is unknown as to what exactly he did to it. I was told that he had been installing lots of roms and eventually one made it do this.
I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682551&page=2 but pushing the volume up/end keys only makes it vibrate 3 times then sit idle not doing anything.
thanks.

The only way to effectively help you/him is to know how he got there, and what recovery/rom/kernel/theme/etc he is running. It would also help to know if this phone has an eng-spl fastboot or an s-off hboot.

Not really... in very rare cases has the hero been bricked.
If nothing else, you could always run the Sprint/HTC RUU through your computer, that will restore the Hero to "Out-of-Box" state. From there you could root back again and flash any ROM you would like.
With the phone turned off, press and hold the volume up button. Whole holding it press the power button. When you see the logo let go of the volume up button. If that doesn't work you'll have to run an ruu from fastboot or get a hercimg and flash it from fastboot.

how do I get into this fastboot mode? I'd love to restore it to factory software, but I'm unable to figure out how to get the phone into a mode that the PC will recognize. Volume up/end vibrates 3 times but never actually turns on or shows a logo. just stays black. If I could get this thing back to its original state that would be great.

Anyone know how to do this? I can't figure out how to get into the fastboot mode. I run the ruu executable, and it says it can't find the phone. I'm sure I need to put it in some kind of flash mode, but seem to be unable.
Not to hijack your thread, but I'm having this same problem. I've run several ROMs including cyanogen 6.0 and 6.1 and today was installing the cyanogen 7 with 2.3 android. I wiped everything and flashed the rom and the gapps and the phone went into constant reboot cycles. I could at that point, hold the power/home and get it back to the recovery menu. I had the Amon RA recovery and thought I would try the 3.0 clockwork, so I flashed that recovery image...rebooted without a problem. I tried wiping and reflashing, but still the constant reboot. So I took the advice on the wiki and flashed the DecaFuct-12222010-691.zip kernel. My phone rebooted and did not start the cycling, so I thought it was an improvement. However, 1/2 an hour later, it's still sitting at the HTC logo and the power/home does not reboot into recovery. Nor does trying to adb find any devices.
Apparently I haven't posted enough on these forums to be able to post to the dev thread. But I've done some base development work on the phone and have been using adb for over a year now. Any help on getting back to a working phone would be greatly appreciated!

Ah, a coworker manager to get the buttons to respond. Yay! At least I'm back to recovery and can push a different ROM. Tho not CM7 since it keeps rebooting constantly!

First, power off and remove the battery. Make sure the USB is not plugged in
This is why you get 3 vibrations and no power on. If it does this again, remove the battery and start over
With the power off and the USB unplugged, hold Vol Up and press power on (End key)
It should then boot into fastboot. (a white page with green letters) At this time, plug the USB in (should change from Fastboot to Fastboot USB) and run the RUU .5 or .6 from your computer.
AT some point the RUU install will say waiting for bootloader. When this happens, you will already be in bootloader (Fastboot USB)
This should work to get you back to fully unrooted stock ROM. From there, reroot, install a custom recovery and rom.
Let me know if this works

here's what happens.
1. Remove battery
2. Replace battery
3. Press and hold volume up
4. While holding volume up, press and hold end key to turn unit on.
5. Unit vibrates 3 times and never powers on
This is without USB plugged in.
I asked the guy who owns the phone what he was doing, he said he had flashed ASOP Gingerbread or something and it never worked again.

Interesting. Mine only does the 3 vibrate thing when I have the USB plugged in and I am trying to enter Fastboot. I unplug the USB, remove the battery, replace the battery, hold vol up and press end. Bing, right into Fastboot.
Do you know if he has the ENG SPL/S-Off installed? If not, the issue may lay in that. Not for sure though.
Also, it may have to do with the way the phone was originally rooted, that has an affect on things as well. Some of the overclocked kernels have an affect on boot. Some Heros wont boot with the kernel set to over 691.
I have installed every build pf ASOP 2.3.2 GB that has been posted, now grated they each had there issues but none of them put me in a loop or froze the phone.
I would also suggest downloading android commander to your computer. Just Google android commander and you will find it. With this program you can boot to bootloader. If you are getting to the HTC screen then Android Commander should recognize the phone. It is a great program.

Not sure, but you may try removing the sdcard and/or putting a different one in. Or when the phone first gets to the HTC screen press and hold the menu button and keep holding it.

Try the android commander. It is a great program and it is GUI based.

Is it stuck at the white HTC splash screen that says quietly brilliant or the boot up animation screen that has the beats logo on it?
If stuck at the splash screen just hold power and both volume keys to force a reboot and see if it boots up then. If it is stuck during the boot animation you may have to try a factory reset.
You may still be able to do a factory reset depending on where the update failed.
Hold power and Vol down for until it boots into the bootloader. Then press the power button again to select bootloader. In the bootloader list you should see factory rest, use volume keys to highlight it and power to select it.
This will wipe all your data you had saved on the internal storage, but that would be better than a non booting phone.
Best of luck.

Crushalot I have a similar issue with my HTC one like xiang5377. Except my phone is stock no root nothing, actually it was given to me to root. It has been a long time since I have rooted a phone and im lost here. My friend got the phone online which might have been his first mistake, second I believe it was from China. In any case lt me explain what has gone on, I have been looking for instructions in unlocking bootloader in fastboot mode which is not an issue, I found it but I am unable to get to the bootloader by pressing power key and VOL down.....strange so I looked under settings to turn off fastboot and the option wasn't there at all. When I press VOl down and power key it goes to some strange looking menue in Chinese REALY! OK so I searched Google and fopund a post that suggested it might be a fake. So I tried VOL up and power key and it took me another strange looking screen. I actually had the option for "normal" "fastboot" and something else:fingers-crossed: Nothin stayed at that same screen for ever....so I pressed VOl down and power and it reset. I went back to that screen gain picked the one option should not have and now im stuck at htc quietly brilliant sceen:crying: I have tried all kinds of key options and still nothing NED HELP!! I am unsure if the phone is internal sprint T-Mobile etc... 100% stock.

100% stock.

Might need some screen shots. It sounds like it may be a fake HTC One. Can you look at the bootloader screen on this fake and see if yours is similar:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362301
Or look here:
http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/14/fake-htc-one-plastic-mt6589/
If it is one the fakes then I'm not sure what to advise other than trying to return it and get a genuine unit.
If it is real then we might be able to do something. Are you able to reboot it by holding both volumes (up and down) plus the power buttons for 15+ seconds? It should cause it to reboot.

NO joy on reboot. I looked at that video and it seems to be the fake one, might explain why I wasn't able to get to the bootloader normally. This sucks now I will have to explain to my lieutenant that he got a fake one and I might have bricked it lol! What would you try next if it were real, or will I have to wait till it dies and still run the risk of it not booting up normally again. I was never able to get to normal bootloader.
---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:45 PM ----------
Also looking at the video, it had the same black menu not the white menu I have seen in other videos, indicating a newer OS. It also did not show fastboot option under settings/power option
http://imageupload.co.uk/files/36ha7p8hdv926l90b0l6.jpg
On the pic above I actually clicked on: [UART Boot] option and im stuck
If it was real, it would respond to the normal reboot commands and allow us to reboot the OS if working or boot to fastboot so we can use fastboot commands to see exactly what we were working with and decide the next move.
In you case, you may just have to wait until the battery dies and then perhaps it will boot normally, as it seems the clones don't have the same button commands to perform operations. You could try different combinations of button holding to see if it will reboot.
There may also be some more information on the Chinese forums, but could be hard for a English speaker to navigate and fin the info needed.
If the seller sold the device as a genuine HTC One then, obviously that is illegal and you could try to use that angle to force them to return it.
Best of luck.

Thanks I really do appreciate it, I have attempted several button configs lol and still nothing. Looks like I have no choice but to wait till it dies and pray that it boots normally. I will check with my LT to see if it was sold as a genuine HTC ONE. It was on EBAY I believe so we will see. Thanks again will let you know what happens then!:good:

[Q] HTC One stuck in boot loop, can't use recovery/

Hello, I've recently just got this phone off someone to fix for them. It's in the constant bootloop. I can get into the bootloader, which is locked and has S-ON. However, if I try to navigate down it restarts as soon as it highlights recovery. If I navigate up, it will open up the show barcode, and exit out of it and sometimes highlight the image crc and attempt to display it. It restarts however very soon after. This phone has not been rooted or has been flashed at all.
Stuck of ideas at the minute on what to do to fix this guys phone, I don't believe he has warrenty on it either .
Any help would much be appreciated! Want to try and get this fixed.

That's the first option i'm able to get to at the top, I press the power button to select it however it just resets the phone. I presume this isn't suppose to happen and the fastboot hasn't work?
Wait, sorry. If I press Vol Up, then Vol down again, it auto selects it. However, I can't select the options in the new menu.
Sorry again, it also doesn't seem to have a fastbootUSB mode? Unless it does that when it restarts?

Bugger. I'll mess with it a bit more in hopes of reviving it. Cheers for the help though
If "fastboot" turns to "fastbootUSB" you will probably be OK. Try entering RUU mode from fastboot with the command "fastboot oem rebootRUU" If you get this far you will just need to apply a full RUU image, which will reinstall everything, including the boot loader itself.

I can't seem to get to that, the phone restarts itself pretty much around 5-7 seconds being in the bootloader itself.
The only other reason i can imagine this happening is maybe because the battery is knackered.

Good point, the power button does seem a bit further in this one, than I have seen in other M7s. This may sound silly, but it clicks when I push it down, but have no idea how to properly bring it up.

unfortunately, i have no idea how to fix the button, but if your phone is behaving as if it's being continually pressed that would explain the reboots.
to verify, just enter bootloader, don't do anything (but be in a well lit environment), if it reboots again and again, then the power button is stuck.

Yep, I'll see about trying to fix the power button then. Here's hoping!
Also, sorry. I should've added in the op that it only turns on when it's plugged into something. If i unplugged it while it's on the htc screen or bootloader, it will stay on till it does the usual reset then stay off.
If the power button is clicking I doubt it is stuck.

When the Device restarts while you're on the HTC Boot Screen, do the LED Buttons down at the bottom flash up a couple of times prior to the reset? If so, that would be conclusive with the stuck Power Button as that is (afaik) the normal behavior for a reset by pressing and holding Power.

This is correct. A hard power down will flash the home and back keys before turning off.

I've seemed to have someone fixed the phone now, it's getting into Android (after much stress trying to get it into it!). It does seem like it's the power button that is sticky, as it's locking the screen and constantly waking it up and bringing the power button menu up. Needless to say, i'm overjoyed that it's working. Now I need to find out how to fix the power button in it.

That might actually not be quite the easiest task. If anything else fails, why not try bringing it as close to stock und untempered as you can go and hand it in for a warranty repair. With a little bit of luck they will not check the software as it is obviously a hardware button defect.

Please help !! Htc one m7 stuck in boot loop *not rooted*

Hello,
can anyone help me. My HTC phone m7 just had a count down and then shutdown for it self. It then began to reboot over and over and it never gets pass the HTC logo.
I tried:
1. going into the splash screen, but i reboots even when i do that. It happens so quickly i can't select fastboot, factory reset or anything.
2. Holding it close to a bring light and hard reset.
3. Waiting for 48 hours.
4. leaving the battery to drained and then hard reset.
I can't remove the battery. and when ever i put the phone to charge it keeps rebooting over and over.

First, try holding the power button for few seconds till kapacitive buttons start flashing. If that doesn't help, press power + vol down to get into bootloader, and then post everything written there

I tired pressing the volume+ down button but it goes into the splash screen, where I can choose fastboot or factory reset. But when I get there, the phone reboots before I can select anything.
When I hold the power button. I did this for at lease 2 mins. Nothing happens.

OK, what does it say on that screen? Under "locked"?
There should be h-boot version and OS version above fastboot and factory reset options. We need that info to try to help you

If it's in bootloader mode it should be fine. In order to run the .exe file your phone must be in bootloader mode. You managed togo into bootloader, so there should be no problem. If that .exe doesn't solve your issue, than it's safe to say it's a hardware issue
