Hi there,
The title says it all really... Anyone know a program that backs up all my SMS' and lets me restore them later?
Preferably backing up to my gmail account and restoring from there.
Ok, flooded with replies, but found a program...
MyBackup does this, but not all the features work on the Hero like Call Register etc.
It lets you backup my SMS and restore them which is all I wanted.
"SMS Backup" backs up (automatically) SMS messages to a Gmail folder called "SMS" (by default).
Not sure about restore, but you can just read them via Gmail, so you may not need to.
I use sprite backup.
SMS Backup and Restore
I've just tested SMS Backup & Restore today after Backup for Root Users and My Backup Pro wouldn't work (My Backup wants to phone home).
SMS Backup & Restore did not need root permissions and backed up about 300 SMSes/second, to an XML file. There is an option to include a link to an XSL stylesheet so that the XML displays the SMSes nicely as a table.
There are a few issues, which I hope the author will take as suggestions:
The date is written as a UNIX timestamp format (number of seconds since 1 January 1970), presumable for easy parsing when the SMSes are restored, and optionally in a human-readable format. This is redundant, as the date could be written in a both computer- and human-parsable format by using the ISO 8601 format: YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS
An extra attribute with the contact name would be very useful in addition to the contact number.
MMS support would be great, perhaps by storing the attachments in CDATA XML elements.

OK can anyone help?
Sprite Backup: Backed up email and Personal databases only
Hard Reset (No Rom change, Stock T-Mobile UK rom)
Restored email and Personal databases
Icon shows 17 unread emails and 2 unread SMS - Excellent - exactly as expected.
SMS's all there and correct
Try to access emails - No account set up - try to create account - "This account already exists"
OK, Hard Reset again
Create email account first
Restore emails from Sprite
SMS - OK & Correct
Emails - Showing 17 - but when opening - no account available, Create new account - and of course - "This account already exists".
Happy to loose the emails, but I want the SMS's
I don't want to lose the ability to access emails from the Today screen icon - it still shows 17 unread (unavailable) emails.
Any ideas ?
Are you backing up and restoring "System Data" and "Personal Databases"?
Try this
Copy the exe in the attached zip to your ppc and run it from your phone. It lists all the accounts that can be restored. I use it to restore my sms messages from a sprite backup whenever I change roms...

thanks! worked for me
Excellent - Perfect fix.
Many Thanks !
Someone should sticky this. I searched all over for a fix, I recently did a fresh ROM flash to fix a problem with my Voice Command and this happened to my email, the program worked perfectly! thanks!
Hello. I've backed up the SMS messages into a file and I disabled binary mode. The backup file looked like it was successful. When I viewed the file though, it looked like it was saved in binary format.
Regardless, I deleted one SMS message and then attempted to restore using the option that does NOT delete all messages before hand. I want to make sure the restore works before risk losing all (about 1100) the SMS messages.
Once I started the restore, it ran for 10 minutes and did not look like it was doing anything. My questions: does the option to restore without deleting all messages before hand actually work? How long can I expect a restore to take with the above options and roughly 1100 SMS messages? The most important thing I'm looking for is being able to view the SMS messages at a later date, not necessarily on the phone, which is why I tried the first backup without the binary option.
I also took another backup and saved it in binary format and tried to restore just the SMS messages from that file, but it ran for about 10 minutes and didn't appear to be doing anything either.
Thanks for all the help!
I really like this app to backup and restore phone settings, call-log and MMS/SMS messages. As well as homepage layout.
It only has a few limitations:
1) you can only schedule ONE backup.
2) your backup filename cannot contain the special character '-' : According the app-dev: "These characters are not allowed due to file system"
Weird huh? - although I can create any other file OR directory containing the '-' in the file system.
3) You cannot have incremental backups that only backup the changed entities - it will be too 'confusing' for the users to use - also the answer from the dev.
4) During the homepage restore the widgets does not get restored correctly - you only get an indication that there was a widget, but the load does not happen.

incremental backups would be amazing.
Hi!
Got a question...well its about restoring SMSs.
Well...I did a backup on GMail via G-Backup Full, problem is i realized that this prog does not have any restore option I tried with SMS Backup+ but it does not work :S "restores 0 sms (xxx dumps)" while xxx being my amount of SMS starred in GMail.
Any idea?
I did a full nandroid having all my sms (now on another ROM) but switching back to the nandroid backup all my SMS are gone :S
Thanxs in advance.
Anyone?
I always forget to update my SMS backup and have to do this everytime I install new FWs.
This works in Linux:
download unyaffs.c and unyaffs.h from http://code.google.com/p/unyaffs/downloads/list
type "gcc -o unyaffs unyaffs.c" from the directory you downloaded the files to
copy data.img to that folder
type "./unyaffs data.img"
It will then dump all data from the data partition on your HD
navigate to \DATA\data\com.android.providers.telephony\databases
copy mmssms.db (these are your SMS)
copy it back to the phone at the same location (\DATA\data\com.android.providers.telephony\databases)
check if the permissions are the same (not sure if they matter, I just use root explorer and set the same permissions for the file)
reboot and it's done
Thanxs! Wow
I just did the restore again....on handcent SMS if i go to delivery reports..there appear al the SMS i sent!
but...there are no sms on "inbox" xd
Can SMS/MMS/call logs backed up from a phone running a stock rooted Touchwiz rom be restored/imported (including any embedded images) into their equivalent apps on an AOSP/CM-based ROM? Does it require doing anything special at the time the backup is made, when it's restored, or additional processing in between?
For SMS and MMS I have been using the SMS Backup and Restore app and couldn't be happier. I store the backups on my sd card (since i change roms pretty often) then activate the archive mode which updates the file with new messages only so you don't need to make a complete backup every time.Until now I haven't had problems restoring messages on TW,AOSP or CM based roms. For the call logs i am not entirely sure but look up MyBackup Pro which i believe lets you backup and restore call logs.
I've used MyBackup Pro a couple times, to restore call log and texts/mms to an AOSP ROM from TW. I remember having a little issue with the timestamps on texts, which kind of screwed up the order of my conversations. It worked but wasn't ideal. If I remember correctly, call logs worked fine. I'll have to try SMS Backup and Restore net time..
