My Backup pro - limitations (???) - G1 Apps and Games

I really like this app to backup and restore phone settings, call-log and MMS/SMS messages. As well as homepage layout.
It only has a few limitations:
1) you can only schedule ONE backup.
2) your backup filename cannot contain the special character '-' : According the app-dev: "These characters are not allowed due to file system"
Weird huh? - although I can create any other file OR directory containing the '-' in the file system.
3) You cannot have incremental backups that only backup the changed entities - it will be too 'confusing' for the users to use - also the answer from the dev.
4) During the homepage restore the widgets does not get restored correctly - you only get an indication that there was a widget, but the load does not happen.
Bert

incremental backups would be amazing.

Question for the Wizard GURU, Sprite Back-Up

I was over on the Cingular forum today and someone was posting about using Sprite Back up to restore information after a ROM upgrade. I have asked the question before and everyone told me it was not possible to do, I never tried because of this. Today someone posted that they did a restore after the ROM upgrade and it worked fine other than a couple SMS settings. Is this true? Would this not revert some of the ROM files back to old ones? Any help would be useful.
(Edited -- I didn't mean to be rude)

The problems with restoring a full back-up after a Rom upgrade.
1. Full back-up includes the Registry. There can be (and almost always are) subtle changes to how and where things get stored in the registry.
2. Core components (such as filenames and locations) have been known to change from one version to the next.
So now you overwrite the new registry with an old outdated one.
Sure you might not notice problems immediately but they will come.
So, I was going through the Sprite Back Up program and in the advanced tab it allows you to select the items you want to back up, exclude the registry and so on. With this said and selecting only the programs you are currently running would this not allow you to restore your programs onto the device after a ROM upgrade? :?:
Almost all programs require the use of registry to store settings. If you don't export and restore the settings, what's the point of backup? Not to mention sometimes your restored program may not work at all unless it is a very simple program. Most of them have to register with system to be functional, i.e. today screen plugins.

This is information I have been looking for it goes into the sprite back up function of upgrading. I am very interested and think I will give this a go on Summinter's new ROM when it comes out. Does anyone see any downside to this?
Wow, sprite supporting Rom Upgrades is news to me!
spritebackup working thru rom upgrades
has anyone tested this to actually work... anyone have information on what they backed up and then reinstalled backup after rom upgrade and what actually worked and did not?
any info would be great... thanks

Sprite Backup works for a restore after a ROM upgrade
I have used Sprite Backup 5.x to do a restore after a ROM upgrade and everything worked great with the exception of my Messaging settings.
The basic process is/was simple. Run a full backup on your data, including the registry and store to your MiniSD card as and EXE - sprite gives you the option to do this.
Before you do the upgrade, you need to go to the Sprite web site and download a file called "GetUpgradeData2005.exe" and put it on the Storage Card (miniSD)
After the ROM upgrade, run GetUpgradeData2005.exe and it will put a file on your device. I think that it puts it on the device, in main memory, so you need to move it to your Storage Card.
Go to the backup file that you want to restore from. As the backup file is an exe, you do not need to reinstall Sprite before doing this.
In the restore options, there is a checkbox for Device Upgrade. Check this. Then run restore. The restore process will ask you for this file that was created by the GetUpgradeData2005.exe. Select it and then the restore run.
The device will reboot once or twice (cant remember) and walla! You have the new ROM but with all your apps and stuff back.
Some caveats/warnings:
1) Don’t backup your storage card data for this backup/restore
2) After the restore, non of my pop3 and imap email accounts were recreated in Messaging – however, when I tried to recreate the accounts manually, using the same POP name for each account, it told me that the name was already in use. SO clearly, the data for the account was in the registry somewhere, but just did not restore 100%.
Being lazy, I just created the accounts with a different POP3 name and that’s it. I am sure that if I looked I would have found the settings in the registry, deleted them, and then recreated the accounts- but the name was not that important.
It should be noted that every night I downloaded all the mail from these accounts into my desktop Outlook, so that on a day to day basis, there were no messages stored in these accounts on the device, thus I don’t think there was any space taken up by not deleting the accounts from the registry – but I am not sure of this.
On the plus side, all my SMS messages were restored.
Hope this helps
Tonight I've decided to upgrade ROM to a newer version (i-Mate 2.16.9.1 -> O2 2.21.4.101) and I did a system backup with Sprite Backup. When I restored it back to Wizard I god a message that the restoration went successfully, but with some errors.
In log I saw many lines like:
Code:
Warning :Error creating value Default
Warning :Error creating value ThreadingModel
Warning :Error creating value ConnectsToPin
Warning :Error creating value Merit
Should I be "worried" for the system stability? So far nothing strange happened..but I haven't started all the programs installed.

Backup and Restore SMS

Hi there,
The title says it all really... Anyone know a program that backs up all my SMS' and lets me restore them later?
Preferably backing up to my gmail account and restoring from there.
Ok, flooded with replies, but found a program...
MyBackup does this, but not all the features work on the Hero like Call Register etc.
It lets you backup my SMS and restore them which is all I wanted.
"SMS Backup" backs up (automatically) SMS messages to a Gmail folder called "SMS" (by default).
Not sure about restore, but you can just read them via Gmail, so you may not need to.
I use sprite backup.
SMS Backup and Restore
I've just tested SMS Backup & Restore today after Backup for Root Users and My Backup Pro wouldn't work (My Backup wants to phone home).
SMS Backup & Restore did not need root permissions and backed up about 300 SMSes/second, to an XML file. There is an option to include a link to an XSL stylesheet so that the XML displays the SMSes nicely as a table.
There are a few issues, which I hope the author will take as suggestions:
The date is written as a UNIX timestamp format (number of seconds since 1 January 1970), presumable for easy parsing when the SMSes are restored, and optionally in a human-readable format. This is redundant, as the date could be written in a both computer- and human-parsable format by using the ISO 8601 format: YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS
An extra attribute with the contact name would be very useful in addition to the contact number.
MMS support would be great, perhaps by storing the attachments in CDATA XML elements.

[Q]Pre-ROM flash checklist

There's so much info in here it can be hard to take it all in. Many posters make it sound like flashing a ROM is such an easy thing to do, but I keep seeing posts from those who run into one problem or another after the process. Could someone please provide a list of anything and everything that should be done BEFORE flashing to prevent any issues with the phone? Things like writing down Market IDs and where to find it, removing any apps that might conflict, changing any setting that might cause a problem, writing down any settings that get erased by flashing...anything that needs to be considered before flashing a ROM. Thanks.
The most important thing is backups (contacts, apps, etc...) Titanium Backup is the best at it, and really worth buying the pro version.
From what I've read market IDs are arbitrary and dont really do much.
Just make sure you watch videos of what you want to do at least 2 times before starting anything.
Well main thing with issues is try stock and reflash. If you prefer not to...... in recovery do a wipe cache/factory reset. Then wipe cache partition. Then wipe delvic cache. Should be golden if not reflash
Android id changer you get android id
Backup all user apps only with titanium
Export contacts to external sd or sim
Make sure toy can get into recovery and dl mode
Know your build number,.located under battery, something like 1008
Backup (Nandroid) --> Make sure you have enough battery --> Flashback to JF6 for 2e recovery --> Flash new rom --> Restore backup
LOL. you guys are just going to confuse him more, because everyone has a different 'check list'
his head might explode after reading everything here
Bread
Eggs
Milk
Nandroid
Alcohol, large quantities
Seriously I have seen you around. You will be fine, flash away, read all suggestions, ask questions as they pop up
My actual list of everything:
Phone: Write down Android ID and IMEI #'s (just in case)
Phone: download SGS Tools and run script to back up efs directory
Phone: Backup all apps with Titanium backup
Laptop and Phone: Copy full directory structure of internal and external cards to the D: drive (second partition on my computer)
Laptop: Create the Rom, adding modem.bin (modem) and zImage (kernel) of choice
Laptop: Add Apps that won't be restored by Titanium to the Rom
Phone: Remove external sd card
Skip: Start Odin
Phone: Get in download mode
Skip and Phone: Reload stock, with wipe
Laptop and Phone: One-click root
Laptop and Phone: load cwm update.zip to /sdcard
Phone: Reboot into recovery (green text)
Phone: Flash the update (install zip on sdcard)
Phone: Transfer TIBU backups to phone
Phone: Restore apps in TIBU (not system data), then GoLauncherEX
Phone: Add mods of choice (circle battery, for example)
Phone: Update with any JPY theme (for me - Serendipity)
Phone: Check to make sure I have the unthemed Swype, Black Gmail
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911093), original email
Phone: Recreate look and feel
Phone: Go through settings, including advanced WIFI menu, ensuring I have them set as I want
My checklist
My Pre-Rom flash Backups checklist:
I do these activities in the late night, mostly on weekends as the phone goes off coverage in a few of those long running steps.
These can take long depending on your phone/laptop's horsepower.
My phone is already rooted. Some steps will not apply to not yet rooted phone. So one will need to first root it.
1. 2 separate full Nandroid BKPs; I use TWRP; Keep them both in Laptop and external HD.
2. Firefox tabs sync to Firefox on Laptop (Do something similar to other browsers.)
3. Contacts, Swype etc syncs, Whatsapp photos etc. Google contacts sync issues can be first fixed using 'Contacts sync fix' app.
Move 2-step verification code generator to a new device or have a copy of the backup codes ready for restoring into the new ROM.
4. ROM Tool Box 'backup phone data'
5. TIBU XML backup basic phone data like Call logs, SMS, contacts, settings. Same as RTB above.
6. TIBU full app backups (user app+data, System apps)
7. RTB full app backups (user app+data, System apps)
8. creating update.zip using RTB ZipMe or similar app
9. Finally, Internal/External card backups. Make sure they contain any/all of the above backups if done there.
(I do this with a few folders at a time, instead of bulk, all or none approach that mostly fails especially with the internal card which tends to be slowly copied from)
I sometimes send some of the smaller backups like XMLs to the cloud for ease of use later.
10. Everything above properly in place, I go ahead with the data wipes.

Backing up S-Memo

Whats the easiest way to backup the S-Memo data. Using it for meetings and with the new ROM's I would like to backup the data. Where is the data held?
Thanks
Sync with google or evernote. I never tried it but there is an option for it
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Sync wic google docs
Its gud
Nd if u delete some doc frm ur fone..stil it wil remain on gdocs wich u cn use later
Deletd docs wont b syncd bak to ur fone
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Google sync does not work properly. If there are no memos on the phone and you try to sync back from google docs then it inserts the notes as pictures within notes. After a couple of such syncs the original note becomes a picture in a picture in a note. Needless to say the loss in resolution makes it impossible to read them.
A friend has the same problem so it is not just me. Does anyone know of a solution? The best would have been a folder that could simply be on the sdcard. I love using the S Memo application and just wish they had given some thought to the storage issue.
Thanks,
damn another unsolved thread!
for me syncing with "evernote" works fine, it also gives me the option to edit notes on the pc and sync it back to my phone, it is quite nice as my secretary shares a folder with me and she can send me in real time notes.
Unlike to Google evernote is really syncing, but this means if you delete a not or Snote then it is going to be deleted on the phone as well.

backup the S-Memo data

I have found a method of backing up the drawings / text from S-Memo exactly as they are (as in you are still able to draw and erase on them) but the backup process isn't exactly "easy".
NB: Now I am just going to assume that users who are reading this have never heard of Titanium Backup or are not familiar with the program.
====================
To backup S-Memo data:
1. Go into your app drawer and open the file explorer program My files (or any other file management program you have like Astro or ES etc).
2. Navigate to your external SD storage (/sdcard/External_SD) and create a folder there called Titanium (or any other name you desire). Once that's done you can exit.
3. Then you need to download the app Titanium Backup Free or Pro (Free version from Google Play here), Install.
4. Open Titanium Backup > click your phone's menu button > Preferences.
5. Select Backup folder location. Now, using your phone's back button to (suprise!) go back, navigate to the folder you created in step 1 of this guide (if you followed the guide it will be in /sdcard/External_SD/Titanium. After you are inside the folder you created, select Use the current folder. Now hit your phone's back button.
6. Still in Titanium Backup app, select the Backup / Restore tab from the top.
7. Scroll down and find the S-Memo app (screenshot 1 attached below). Single-tap it, then press the Backup ! button (screenshot 2).
8. Done!
p.s. Just a quick explanation of what we did, essentially we created a folder for Titanium Backup to store its backup files in a place that is not on the internal SD. Therefore if we decide to do a full system wipe which included the internal SD (whether deliberately or accidentally) our backup data would not be wiped with it (I think the default Titanium Backup location is /sdcard/TitaniumBackup i.e. on the internal SD for our phone).
====================
To restore S-Memo data:
1. Install Titanium Backup again (remember we wiped our phones, so the app is gone?).
2. Same process as steps 4 and 5 from above: Open Titanium Backup > phone's menu button > Preferences > Backup folder location > navigate to /sdcard/External_SD/Titanium (or wherever you saved it) > Use the current folder.
3. Now hit your phone's back button > then press the Backup / Restore tab.
4. Find the S-Memo app > select it > press Restore (screenshot 3). When you're done you can exit Titanium Backup.
Now here is where it gets interesting...
5. Open S-Memo... and you may notice the drawings / text you have created have been restored, but have one of the following problems:
- Image missing from the note preview.
- Only part of the image is visible in the note preview.
- The image preview is displaying something random.
This is what has happened: The drawings / text you have created from before have been restored, but the preview of the drawing / text has not been updated on your new system (I have no idea where S-Memo stores that). So if you select the drawing / text, it is an exact copy of the original, but you just can't see it in the S-Memo preview.
6. To get that preview back, do the following:
For drawings: Open the drawing > draw something (like a dot) > then you can erase it during the same drawing session > click Save.
For text: Open the text > type a letter or something > delete it during the same drawing session > click Save.
7. Now the preview of the note should accurately reflect the contents of the note!
====================
I'm not sure if there is another easier method than this, but I have been using this method successfully through multiple wipes (I should really stop messing around with system files ) to restore my S-Memos perfectly. A very long, but (I'm pretty sure!) a garuanteed method to work. If anyone else has another method do let us know.
Enjoy your restored notes
Retrieve original sketches which came with the Note
I seem to have lost the original sketches which came with my SNote. Does anyone know how I can retrieve them? I didn't back them up....
Anyone? Could anyone help me here?

You could try to search on the file system for the folder where the files are stored by the app.
Then use a file restore program to try and undelete the files.
ANd oh yeah, make BACKUPS! then you would not be in this situation (yes it is stating the obvious).
I have some additional info for users who update there Note app to the newer version.
You can use the same procedure as above to restore data + app.
Just rename the Smemo.apk, do a restore of app+data, remove the restored app, rename the newer Snote app to it's normal name and start it.
You will see some conversion, then it works (at least it did for me).
To restore the preview images, back up the /Sd Card/S-memo folder before you flash, then overwrite with your backup afterwards. The thumbnails / Previews are stored as ordinary JPGs.
Now if only I can manage to extract that folder from my nandroid backup... :silly:
why not use Titanium backup pro's cloud sync option - you can password protect all files too.
Even if my phone dropped to the bottom of the sea, i will always have my contacts, cal, apps and selected folders backed up and password protected online.
I have not tried restoring S memo data, but im sure TB pro will restore it fine.

Viber messages Backup & Restore

Backup Restore for Viber
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mich.vibr
Description:
This program makes full backup of all Viber`s messages onto SD card and RESTORE it after Viber uninstall or new installation to another phone.
Before we only can get text message copy via email - now we have advanced backup tool for Viber!
Need ROOT access.
How to.
1. Install the program. At first start choose the path to and the name of the folder to store backups. Warning! The presence or absence of slashes necessarily i.e. path must be specified correctly - the path to SD card starts with a slash, but no slash on the end. The folder name is spelled without slashes! The program will create an empty folders on the SD card on the specified path. Recommended to make sure in file explorer that it happened.
2. The first time you press "Save message history" You should be asked to provide root access. You need to provide permanent access. While you allow access for the first time - a copy may not be made, so as program can not wait until it is given a root, it will make copy operation without root - and naturally do not copy. Second time and after, root will be granted immediately and the program can read and save the data.
3. After saving recommended to make sure that the folder is created on the SD card and subfolder databases is not empty.
4. To restore backup on the same phone when reinstalling Viber at first re-install Viber, activate it on the same phone number as before, then wait for a while until it syncs contacts from the phone addressbook with numbers stored on the Viber`s server. At second you need to exit the program Viber. Start recovery message history, and restart Viber. Message should be restored.
5. To transfer data to another device - install Viber to a new device and activate it with the same number which the copy was maden, then close Viber (it is assumed that phone addressbook on both devices are synchronized and identical to each other, for example using the same Google account). Then install the Backup Restore for Viber. If you are using SD card - check the correctness of paths at first start and correctly specify the folder with the files. Please also provide a permanent root access on the new device. Press the button to restore Viber`s history. History is restored.
6. If you are using the data transfer - make sure that the path to the backup file specified correctly - on the same device it can be sdcar0 - on the other extSD etc.
Can i transfer viber to my new phone without reactivate needed?
