Hey, Im stuck! One of the first steps to ROOTING the G1 is to change the SD card's format. So first mount the phone via usb to the computer. did that. right click the removable disc and go down, click Format, change to FAT32.
Everytime I click Format tho, my phone somehow dismounts my connection to the computer! Everytime! I dont know what to do or why its doing this. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
If it's being that quirky I would try a SD Card Reader and format it that way.

i have tried this with 2 different micro sd cards. both 1gb. 1 sandisk, the other is a samsung. both work fine in the g1 and if i connect to my laptop (windows) i can access the files and everything as normal. when i right click and tell it to format however it ejects itself and i have to remount. i do not have an adapter to put it in my card reader, so this is the only way i can do it. can anyone tell me what i'm either doing wrong or a quick fix for this?
dont know man cuz i didnt hve that problem sorry dude
The g1 doesn't like it when you do that. If you don't have the adapter. Your only option that I know of is to format it is from android itself in the system options. Sorry to hear about your situation

I have/had the same issue, so i will tell you what i did and maybe it will help. I formatted my sd card on the RC33 update in fat32 and from the computer.(when the g1 liked the sd card).
My suggestion if you don't want to downgrade to upgrade..is to stick the card in another phone that can connect to your computer and format it that way.
Upgraded to cupcake (what ever version you want). Then the g1 was reading my 4gb card wrong. So i removed all info on the sd card just copied to folder on pc and formatted the sdcard through the phone. From there it was reading the card correctly. To go on, i then partitioned with apps2sd. Placed all info back on sd card and waa laa...like magic...or dream...or hero...i dunno confusing...who's on first?
Title says it all. I unmounted as I should have before turning off USB storage, but when I unplugged the USB cable, it said I have a damaged SD card and that I may need to format it. I hit the OK to format and nothing happened. I tried rebooting and nothing happens. I'm rooted with CM 3.9.7 mod, A2SD, etc. I've tried flashing the recovery, etc, but it can't mount the SD card and so fails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

do you have a card reader for your computer?
No card reader for my computer.
do you have another phone or device that you can put your sd card in and connect to your computer
yeah, a Dash.
I've run into this problem before. Rebooting the phone. without selecting the format usually fixes it. I think it just happens when the SD card fails to unmount properly.
If you have an update.zip on the SD Card..try applying it through the recovery menu. If it says it fails to mount the SD Card over and over, then your SD Card probably is actually damaged.

Is there any way to fix the card? Like I said, I've got an HTC Dash running WM6 that I can put the card into and connect to the computer. Is there anything to be done?
try to format it from the dash through computer, but im not familiar with dashes
I think I may have figured it out a bit.
The Dash wouldn't recognize the 8GB SDHC, but I fortunately still had the original 1GB, which it did recognize. I was able to transfer the CM 3.9.7 onto it and boot in recovery mode and reload the update.zip file. I'm currently booting up and once that's done, I'll do what is necessary to put my 8GB card in, format it and then try to make everything work again. Suggestions?
you want to use the 3.97? that rom is still experimental. maybe you should use the 3.6.8.1 rom

That's about it...
I usually keep a back up of everything just in case.
Also, for your usb card reader problems...

he might want to try the stable rom though
My plan succeeded! I'm now waiting for the Market to let me download my apps again. It let me download a couple, but stopped for some reason. It's happened before, so I'm not too worried. If I should be, let me know. Thanks.
ok sounds good
For some reason, Google Talk was disabled. I enabled it and voila, everything's all good!
I bought a topram 16gb class 4 HDSC Micro Sd card and it i've only had it for a a little under a month and one night I had a completely moronic idea to go into recovery and wipe out system and cache, rotation, battery, ext, all of em. When I rebooted I ended up stuck in a boot loop. For the life of my phone I wasn't able to get out of this loop so I ended up trying anything I could including popping the sd card in the pc to see what was going on there since I ultilize apps2sd. I then wanted to start clean, so I was trying to format my sd card and I was attempting to accomplish this through windows, I would open my computer and then right click on the mounted drive and click format, no such luck, I get an error. I tried deleting the files from the sd by selecting and choosing delete, it would initially work, however then I would pop the card back in the phone/computer and the files would still be there, as if I had never deleted them.
Whats strange, the files appear to be working, atleast the pictures and movies, music; they all work when opened on a computer, they'll play as they're expected to.
I've tried various options, low level formats, paragon partition manager; I tried to delete each partition, swap,ext,fat32 to have unformatted space however, no such luck. The processes would succeed only to all still be there once I put back in a phone or computer.
The ways i'm accessing the hdsc card is with a USB card reader which was provided with the card, as well as through the phone by mounting the sd card and plugged in with a usb cable. I'm truely stumped and very uphappy about this. I really don't understand whats going on, usually I can conquer stubborn task such as this, this time it seems to be getting the best of me. Anyone have some insight on my situation? Thank you, -B
Are you saying that after you format the files are still there?
In that case, you aren't formatting.
Or are you saying that after you copy the files back, it is corrupt? In that case, one of the files has become corrupt.

I'm saying that when I select the files when the sd card is mounted, and select delete, after the delete process appears successful, I open the sd card and the files are still on the sd card.
Format is not suceeding and I am now getting I/O errors (read/write) when formatting with paragon.
When I put the sd card into the phone, I'll just constantly loop with a dancing alien (fresh's rom 2.1.1) <- whichever is newest
Funny thing is, the files on the card are readable when I can get the sd card to mount and I can open say the image files or whatever.
So, can someone please help me, and point me in some sort of direction? I'd really appreciate some guidance. Thanks.
Sounds dead to me, man. I'd have to to witness what you're seeing to officially pronounce it dead, but from what you're describing... it's dead, Jim. I'm sorry for your loss.
after flashing JP2, the TF card is write-protected via PC, any idea??
seems so many ppl having this problem, any fix for it or do we need to wait till JP3 to 'release' our sd card?
Same with mine, waiting for a fix...
Ok.... For a moment I thought the problem was solved. Please change the title in "external card is write-protected...

we can write stuff into the card in our phone, but not by connecting to the PC then choose Mass Storage / Kies to copy file over there
I can write things by taking the card out of my phone and put it in pc and copy things over but when i connect my phone to pc i can't transfer anything across.

There's a workaround. Not a good one, but at least it works. You can get full r/w access to the external sd card from within Kies, with the horrible Kies file-explorer.

Nope, the external card is still r/o when seen through USB storage in windows
tried changing the permissions in root explorer as well, no joy.
There is a easy way how to solve this. Plug in the cable, select Kies (on the phone), u dont have to run kies on your PC, after the Kies is running on your phone, on your pc there should be mobile phone connected, go there and there are both cards(in, ext) and u can use them.
i also have the same problem with the sd card :/
Hi I would seriously appreciate any help! I am at a lost after hours of reading.
I had started off with autonooter, and now looking to install CM7. I had been told that I need to have the monster rootingpack. So I'm trying to go from autonooter to CM7.
I had tried to write monster clockwork... and did the 8gb clockwork, says its done but nothing shows up on my sd card. I then proceeded to format my sd card and still no luck.
I then tried to go into Rom manager and reboot into recovery but now there is an error! I'm so frustrated, I don't know what I am suppose to do.
Please let me know if you can offer help! Thanks in advanced.
Difficult to say without more - I assume you are using WinImage (run as adminstrator) to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk on physical drive"? If done correctly, there should only be four files on the drive (at which point, you need to drag and drop the zipped ROM to the drive.
Dumb question - is the flash card an 8 GB flash card?

Appreciate asking, any thoughts?
Are you using a card slot that came with your computer? If so go get a true card reader, that may be the issue.

This is an interesting idea... is this usually an issue? I was putting my microsd card in a SD converter card and putting into a built in SDcard reader in my lenovo.
Is there a way to get my pc to read my sd card from my nook?

In order to flash CM7 you need to use the EXT4 Compatiable CWR
