Rooting a HTC Dream without applying another ROM - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a South African HTC Dream and did some research on this forum about rooting. I am more than happy with the phone's current ROM with the exception that it does not support WPA-Enterprise Wifi - in order for me to configure this, I would need to root the phone and will then be able to adjust wpa_supplicant.conf.
In all the tutorials I would have to downgrade the firmware (I have not been able to do this with any of the guides supplied - either normal RC7 downgrade, 1-click or Goldcard) in order to root the phone.
Is there any way I can root the phone without having to flash another ROM (i.e. retain the current HTC ROM and make adjustments to wpa_supplicant.conf)? Most ROMs provided are not based on HTC build, and I would loose ActiveSync. AFAIK there is no ROM available which provides ActiveSync AND HTC Mail.
My current phone info:
DREAM PVT 32B SHIP S-ON d
HBOOT-1.33.0010 (DREA20000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-3.22.20.17
Jun 2 2009,21:33:16
Firmware: 1.5
Baseband: 62.525.20.18U_3.22.20.17
Kernel: 2.6.27-9af60ed4 [email protected]
Build: 1.87.421.1 146733 CL#47295 release-keys

There are HTC based ROMs. The ROM from the Rogers Dream has exchange support, but before you flash the ROM you must flash the new radio then the SPL.

Thanks - I replaced my phone with another one (FW 1.1) and was able to flash. I installed Touchdown to overcome the Exchange problems - not ideal, but best choice now.

You're on 1.1?! I would strongly recommend flashing a Cyanogen ROM to get you back to 1.5.

I did update to latest Cyanogen rom. One question: I rooted the phone and am on latest Cyanogen. Only (minor) issue I have is that before the Cyanogen splash-screen comes on, I still see my mobile providers boot-logo (for about 10 seconds until the splash screen comes) - is there any way to change this?
I tried fastboot flash splash1, but get an error. As part of my rooting I did not flash SPL (i.e. HardSPL) but have cm-recovery - should I update SPL and if so which one (also, what is the risk of bricking?).
If replace SPL, do I need to update the radio again or reflesh Cyanogen?

As far as I know you wouldn't need to flash either again, HardSPL is known to be safe on all phones I believe. The only problems I've heard are with Haykuro's SPL. If you haven't flashed a new SPL that could be the issue, what is the error your getting when trying to change the splash?

It should be safe as long as it doesn't not require a specific radio. I have never heard of the radio version you have, but that's probably because you don't have a t-mobile G1. What carrier is it on? If it's unlocked, what was the original carrier? (the ones displayed on the boot screen).
I think Josh is right that it's safe for all Dream's, so you probably could go ahead and flash it, I'm not 100% sure. Just a quick not about flash SPL's and radios on cm-recovery, you have to physically press alt-s then home+back to reboot. Don't touch the trackball. That's only for SPLs and radios.

The hard spl is great, but if u want to run hero u will nees to flash haykuros spl. If u do flash haykuros spl make sure u flash the new radio image FIRST! OR U WILL BRICK! Have fun flashing away

Thanks. I applied SPL from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
And then fastboot worked: /fastboot-mac flash splash1 DOWNGRADE-SD/Boot_images/android.rgb565
Upgraded to latest Cyanogen 4.0.4 and have now an awesome phone - thanks to everyone for the help on this forum!

I had flashed ota-radio-2_22_19_26I (not sure what it was before). I did roughly document my steps on my blog if you are interested.

thanks. after seeing the radio you said you originally had in the first post i remembered that rogers has a radio that starts with a 3(then i searched and they are the same radio), then when i tried to download the root rogers package from that thread it kept timing out the download, so i was just curious as to radio you used. according to all the rogers root thread you have to flash the 1.33.2005 spl first before you can actually root, so basically i was trying to figure out if devices with that radio are immune to the bricking without 2.22.19.26I radio.

Question about updating radio and SPL

Right now I am running Cyanogen 3.6.5 with the radio and SPL that have not been updated for a while (they are not the latest ones for sure).
Anyway in case I want to try out a Hero rom I want to update the radio and SPL, can I just update those with my current rom without having to reflash the rom?
I haven't touched my SPL, but I can tell you the radio is easy. Same as any flash - rename to update.zip and drop it on the sdcard. Reboot to recovery and flash. ROM will be fine.
Go to Settings > About phone
Check the Baseband version -- If it ends with .26I you have the latest.
I do know, when flashing the "DangerSPL" for Hero builds, you need to boot into fastboot mode (Camera+Power) and look for the text "PVT" in the first line on the rainbow screen. If you don't see PVT, you have the revision that bricks when flashed to DangerSPL

When you flash the new SPL you will have to reflash your rom because the SPL will overwrite your rom.

Ok I kinda understand that part but if after flashing the radio and SPL I flash the same rom (Cyanogen 3.6.5) again without wiping will all my settings and apps remain as they were before the update?

Use the method in post #3 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517593 it worked perfectly for me and yes your settings and apps remain the same.
One last question before I do this. I went into settings as well as checked at the fastboot screen and seems like I have the latest radio already and from what I read on this topic I should NOT reflash it right? About the SPL though how can I check what version I have? And if I already have the latest one and flash it again will I end up with a brick? Thanks everyone for your help.

Don't flash Radio again if you have the latest. (2.22.19.26I) Power off your phone then hold the Camera button down and press the On button (red button) you should see a white screen with 3 lil' Androids on skateboards, up top it should say DREAM PVT (32B ENG S-OFF) <---might be different but second lines shows your SPL, for example mine is HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA10000) and if you have the latest SPL then don't flash it again your good to go. One more thing MAKE SURE IT SAYS (PVT) AND MAKE SURE YOU FLASH RADIO BEFORE FLASHING SPL IF BOTH UPDATES ARE NEEDED! Can't stress this enough because if you do this wrong you'll definitely get a Brick.
Cool thanks. I do have PVT and the latest radio, guess it's just the SPL. Thanks again for your help.

questions for updating radio

xda community,
sorry if it dosent belong here but if anything move it or lock it but really need help....
i received a replacement phone from tmobile with the radio 2.22.19.261 and that is the radio update we need...well i bricked 1 phone because i tried doing this and didnt notice that it had already the radio......what im concerned about is if i should skip the update radio step and just install the spl???? please some feedback would be greatly appreciated and once again sorry if it dosent belong here.
plz and thank you
the 2.22.26I is the radio that is needed to flash the 1.33.2005 spl. also make sure phone is a pvt instead of dvt by booting the phone into bootloader (camera and power) and find out on that screen. if you have both of those then the 1.33.2005 *should* (being the keyword) flash without problems.
it is a PVT board so you are suggesting i just flash the spl since the radio already came with the phone?

You should flash the Radio haykuro posted. I did just to be safe. I believe i saw one person brick even though he had the 26I radio, but i dont think he knew what he was doing.
if your gonna flash the .2005 spl, you might as well be extra safe and flash the radio. its only a few minutes more

Pretty sure 2.22.19.26I is the latest radio.
2.22.19.26I is the latest radio and has been since cupcake.
Boot into hboot [camera]+[power] and it'll tell you what version you're using. I will bet my own anus it's 2.22.19.26I.
yea it is... i was pretty sure in order to get cyanogen's rom it changed your radio image when you flashed the htc recovery image, im guessing it was the same one i already had then

Yea the HTC recovery image does include a radio, but its the same one we've been using for ages.
Incidentally, it's not radio images that brick your phone, its the 1.33.2005 spl (also known as Haykuro's spl, deathspl, etc), which is only compatible with radio 2.22.19.26I, so unless you're using that spl you can flash radios freely.
lol i wouldnt say freely.... radios can cause bricks just like spls lol

update radio = bricked?!?!?! please help!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I rooted my phone using the "one click" root method (from standard Rogers 1.5 firmware) (http://zenthought.org/system/files/a...1-20090908.apk) and then updated to the latest radio:
•2.22.19.26I
•Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
•http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecod..._22_19_26I.zip
I initiall got the box with the arrow then the phone continued to the Rogers boot screen and has been stuck there for 20 minutes at least! So i took out the battery and turned it back on again and it get stuck on the Rogers screen still!
Have I bricked it!?! I thought you can only brick it when you update the SPL ... all I did was update the radio. Please HELP!
If it helps I was following the instructions step by step from: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how...page=0,2
according to the cyanogen guide I bricked my phone:
2.Be very careful of any upgrade or mod instructions that require you to install an HTC "Recovery" zip/image, a replacement radio, or anything that might cause a difference of versions thereby bricking your phone.
eg: you currently have an EBI1 system and recovery image. If you boot an EBI0 radio image you will no longer be able to boot your phone.

Thanks in advance.
P.S. to clarfiy every button combination I press comes up with the Rogers boot screen. Unless I'm a complete idiot and am not pressing the buttons correctly I don't see how I can fix the phone if it won't boot! I though bricked phones are totaly duds (eg. they don't turn on/no charging lights...)
see if you can get it recovery mod? (home+end)
The main cause of bricks is using an SPL that is incompatible with the IPL (radio), hence it is possible not only to brick by changing the SPL, but also by changing the IPL.

Not a chance.
If all he did was change the IPL, then the ONLY cause for it doing locking as it is, is that the SPL is not compatible with that IPL. It is, therefore, bricked.
I didnt think that radio was compatible with the rogers phones, i thought that they had to use the 3.22.20.17 radio?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544654&highlight=rogers+root
if so that could be the cause of your brick!

Wow.... perhaps you should chill a little, these are Q&A forums, the purpose of which is to educate and help, not just baffle people with terms that its doubtful that they have heard before.
You'll see that i linked back to the thread that details everything that they should be to know not to make the mistake again, and anyone else that does a search will find it as well.
The rogers dream is compatiable with either radio. You just need your recovery/kernel version to match your radio version. The 2.22.19.26I radio needs 32B and 3.22.20.17 needs 32A recovery/kernel.
He needs to reflash the 3.22.20.17 radio then complete the rogers dream rooting guide on the cm wiki.

Flashing Back to Stock ROM

can anyone give me a step by step on how to flash my ROM back to STOCK?
if you want it for warranty reasons then you will need to flash the SPL also to stock. you can just download the latest ROM from HTC website and flash it. it will give you the stock ROM on the existing SPL.
End of the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2710548&postcount=1.
Remember you will also need to go back to stock spl if for warranty purposes.

I've kinda got thesame question. I flashed a stock rom (latest EU rom from HTC site), then stock SPL (1.14) and then the stock rom again. Is this enough to be able to claim warranty without HTC finding out about custom roms/boatloaders?
Thanks

That depends. What was your original rom and spl? Are you entitled (via location) to use the new EU rom, eg if you live in America then this may not be acceptable to HTC.
When you boot up the new rom, are the screen colours ok as this will tell you if you have the right spl for your rom? If you have the latest EU rom, I doubt that 1.14 spl would be the right one, but it could be I guess. With the stock rom, you should also get the stock radio. So provided you have the stock rom available to your area, with the correct matching spl and the radio, there is no way to tell of your exploits
Thanks for your reply
The problem is that the screen of my device won't turn on anymore (Device powers on, I can connect with activesync, digitizer works fine) so i have no way of checking if I have the right SPL or not...
I also have no idea what my stock rom/spl/radio version was.. I live in the Netherlands, and through the official HTC site i flashed the latest rom, which included a radio (a radio version was part of the filename). What I'm trying to find out is:
Could 1.14 have been my stock SPL, or was that version never used on any Dutch Blackstone?
If the spl doesn't match the rom (wrong colours) that isn't much of a problem; I can tell them I tried to update my rom because I thought maybe my screen would work again after I installed the latest ROM... But if I have a SPL that was never even used I don't think they will buy that
According to the wiki there are 2 Dutch roms - one would require a 1.14.0000 spl and the other a 1.54.0000 spl. So I guess either of those would do.
When you flashed the rom from the website, where you still using hspl or uspl? Depending on the rom you flashed you will need to flash the matching spl. Do you have the full notation/naming of the rom you flashed. This should give an indication of which spl you will need.
As much as I appreciate ClydeB1 for assisting you, I fail to see a reason for this thread. A thread already exists for flashing advice, i.e. the dummies guide. Also the HardSPL thread exists and has advice on how to flash back to stock. So depending on your query post in either of these.
The initial query and reason this thread was created has been answered, so no need for this thread to remain open. Thread closed
