bricking - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been wondering if I should attempt to root my phone or not. With the new rumor claiming that Google's newest updates (donut eclair flan ect..) will not be distributed out to the G1 users due to hardware issues. It seems if this rumor turned to be true the only way to get the new said updates will be to root my phone. My worry is that i will end up bricking my phone. Now to the Question.
If by some chance i end up bricking my phone is there any way to unbrick it or would i be SOL because rooting voids warranty?

I advise you to read the ultimate noobs guide up and down http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550710&highlight=ultimate+noob
After you have read that then goto youtube and watch the 3 part series at this link.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgJ2VtSqtJY&feature=channel_page
If you follow these guides, you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the links. The n00b guide i knew about. I was planning on using that when the time came for me to root my phone. I just wanted to know about bricking just as a fail safe. I have read that once a G1 is bricked there is no going back but i have also read with the new updates there is a way to restore a bricked phone. Just wanted some clarity.

A real brick is just that, a paperweight, no coming back. The real only way to brick at this point is the danger spl needed for a hero rom, other than that any boot loops or jam ups as long as you can get into recovery or the bootloader you can be saved with a little bit of reading, and don't worry we will get the updates just our xda versions of them

How to upgrade SPL & Radio?

I would like to upgrade to the two files here:
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
I've already got my phone rooted and I'm working on the steps to install HERO.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534479
How do I upgrade to these two files? Which do I rename to "upgrade.zip" or whatever. Thanks
You had better research more before going onto the SPL upgrade. You might want to get used to Android and flashing before jumping straight into what your doing. However, if you decide to proceed anyway......

read the 2nd post
not responsible for you bricking your phone..... (yes upgrading can permanently kill your phone)
You couldn't wait for an answer...........
I went to 4 or 5 threads today....... saw similar posts... and realized that they were all from you.
So I'm assuming you really did brick your phone
People have already answered your questions!!! Going by the descriptions you have given us your phone is bricked and no amount spamming the same questions over and over is going to fix it

Ordered a G1 and had a few questions

First off I want to say that I know my way around a WinMo flash, reflash, nand breaking and all that jazz pretty well. But Android...not so much.
I ordered a G1 off Ebay recently, it has been shipped, but in the mean time, I was wanting to research the rooting and flashing process..It looks very involved...Very involved..lol
I've read the guides and such but was curious about the rom/radio bricking issues. With WinMo theres alot of radios..How about Android(My phone is an unlocked T-Mobile)?? Are there still known issues?? I like this rom http://lb.vg/fVl3w
Are the guides for rooting on here currently up to date(I think they are, and they probably are)?? Do I have to root to flash a new rom on there(I think I do)??
Sorry for the n00bish questions, but I really don't wanna kill my phone.
Can all bricks be fixed via the user??
Thanks
Edit: What is the situation of Flash?? What is supported??Is Hulu supported??
2.1 and 2.2 Froyo..Whats the difference??

First root (did it yesterday for the first time, phone was rooted when I got it).
You need root for certain apps, for installing another spl, custom roms.
Root installs recovery (if I remember ok).
Upgrade spl from stock to 1.33.2003 (zip file in recovery). Now you can use fastboot (safer!).Reboot in fastboot and flash first another recovery, then another radio (2.x) radio (needed for spl 1.33.2005), reboot again, go to fastboot and flash the dangerspl 1.33.2005 (or use MTDpartitions, but I got problems with it). Then flash roms.(no need for the old hardspl).
Flash not supported(arm incompatible).
Bricks can only be fixed with an JTAG, so be carefull (always wait) ! ROMS can't brick your device, only the officials can (which contain spl and radio).
Read for flashing the spl's (if you have rogers(canada) it's different).
Idk what this user means by saying that flash isn't compatible with the arm processor.
But yes android 2.2 supports flash all the way to flash 10 but on the g1 I don't think it would be so good on 528mhz because flash is pretty bloated on system resources. But flash videos are fine hulu runs fine for me.
Woops sorry about the double post I refreshed page and it submitted info twice. I did not see a delete function.
Should I do any sort of formatting or partitioning on my SD card or just let the G1 do it??
I've got an 8gig SDHC Class 4 card also.
I've also been reading about J-Tagging the G1..Theres an adapter on here http://miniurl.com/49008 and it's 20USD for the adapter but I think I have to heek it up to an Omnia Repair box..Is that right?? This video http://miniurl.com/49009 shows em hooking one up to a white box..and the only white box on there site is for the Omnia Repair one and it's 229 Euro's(304USD).
Does the first reply have the correct steps for rooting my phone?? Is that for all versions. I'm not sure if mines a R29 or lower.
Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks

Risk of rooting and flashing roms

What are the risk of flashing third party roms onto your device. For the iPhone if you have problem jailbreaking or something you can simply put the iPhone into DFU and restore the phone and you can't really brick the phone. If there's a problem with the flashing process is there way to brick the phone?
On a ride note, does anyone know if the rooting process is the same for the Rogers captivate and the At&t captivate are the same
I can only assume that the process/risks are the same as the AT&T versions. As long as you are able to get your phone into "Download Mode", the phone is recoverable. The only risk I would say is 'time'. There is a lot required in the knowledge of flashing ROMs. It is not meant for a beginner, but easy enough that you can learn...O yea, the process of rooting technically voids your warranty. But you can flash to stock and unroot and AT&T probably would have no clue that you did anything like that. Rogers, I can only assume, is the same.

Sound advice. If you do plan in modding any phone, read, read and read some more. Better it takes some time than you wind up with a fancy paperweight.

[Q] Is bricking 'permanent'?

Hey guys. Just a quick basic question here, before I get too involved with changing between roms trying to find one that suits what I want for my phone.
If I 'Brick' my Samsung Galaxy, is it essentially now useless? Or can it be unbricked using certain techniques. I don't want to go changing rom after rom just knowing eventually I'm likely to brick it, and I do quite like my phone
Cheers.
Bricking your phone to an unrecoverable stage is actually quite hard to do (as long as you follow the guides on the installs properly). When I first started installing roms on my other old phone I panic'd a few times that ohhh no I bricked my phone but no I did not.
One of the most common ways of bricking your phone is not letting it complete the flash process. Been halfway through is not a good thing. I know for me when ever I install a new rom I ALWAYS do where possible a factory reset on the device, and as I have contacts etc backed up to gmail and messages backed up on server I do not really care about loosing keis support for back ups, there are plenty of great apps to do this, I also wipe cache and reformat the internal sd card as well.
So would not worry about bricking your phone but READ, and REREAD hehehe one more time (with coffee of stimulant of your choice) REREAD the rom instructions prior to install and do it step by step then you should have no problems, and if there ies, its because then the device is more than likely faulty..
One of the most common issues is the internal sd card, there is a forum post regarding testing the card, now never did this but seems a good way to see if your card can withstand the process, another is download a benchmark app run the test (turn off as much crap as you can) then compare results with other users and if its favourable then your device should be fine (this is for the overtly cautious method >:¬} .
Needless to say following my advice and it leads to a bricked device, well I it wasn't me and I was not here >:¬}

Stock Nexus Root Steps

I've been doing a lot of reading regarding rooting the Nexus one and unlocking the bootloader etc. I wish not to unlock the bootloader at this stage (as you can't lock it again, and the fact that i'm gonna be playing around with my dad's phone and wouldnt want anything to happen to that)
Right now, the phone has stock 2.3.4 installed, which I believe needs to be downgraded to be rooted.
So I downloaded the FRG83 release.
Now is the following right/possible:
Flash the phone with FRG83 by going into the phone's recovery - so the phone is downgraded
Root the phone using the superoneclick method
Now the phone is rooted and I can flash it with any custom ROM eg, CyanogenMod 7 etc..?
Sorry if this has been covered earlier, however I tried my best to read as much as I could, however there were always a few more steps involved in the process which I thought could be left out
So would the above process be okay?
Thanks
You have to use the PASSIMG.ZIP method to downgrade.
I would just read the WIKI
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...des_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus
Read the wiki. You said you been doing a lot of reading but still do not know how to root/downgrade from 2.3.4. That makes no sense.
The steps are there for a reason.
You don't know what you're doing but come to conclusion that you can skip/leave out steps. That is flat out stupid.
Thanks
Thanks baseballfanz Yeah I've read the wiki and I was going to use the PASSIMG method, hence downloaded the FRG83 file, but somewhere else I had read that you had to flash it to froyo then back upto gingerbread :/ hence was a bit confused.
The problem is there are too many threads about it. And there are a few tiny differences in all.
So I guess I have to flash down to froyo and then use superoneclick.
And after that, I can just flash any ROM from the forum?
Alubundy2010, mate I did read it all and understood it. However I still had a few questions. If you didnt wanna help, it would've been best to keep your mouth shut.
Thanks
It is clear you did not and still don't understand it.
Yeah probably not, hence why I posted asking for help in the first place. Just spent an hour trying to do it, but stuck at froyo for now till I do an official OTA update tmrw morning and have a stock unrooted phone, cus I honestly don't have the balls to brick my dad's phone. So not rooting till I'm 100% sure of what I'm doing.
Thanks a lot for all the amazing the help.
Wiki clearly says:
"Gingerbread 2.3.4 can be rooted only when downgraded to 2.3.3 or to Froyo, using PASSIMG method, which will wipe the phone"
And the link is given - landing you on the same page, a bit upwards. The link contains EVERYTHING needed to downgrade.
Moreover, the following sentence points you to a VERY simple guide, which says: when you downgrade, you root. Without any additional steps. And from that point you do whatever you want.
The main guideline of XDA should say - "if you don't know what you're doing - stay away from rooting until you do". Obviously you don't, and you don't seem willing to learn by reading the proper guides, even when pointed to.
And just to make sure you got it: you can't root the latest OS version. Which means, if you downgrade and wait for the OTA to upgrade you back to the latest version, you'll finish (again) without the ability to root, and this time also without the ability to downgrade. Not quite smart, yes? If you want to avoid unlocking the bootloader, that is.
Now that the phone is running froyo you can root.
You should also have gotten the ota notification basically as soon as the phone finished booting.

Oh well thanks for the help guys, and I did actually do all the reading that was required.
Oh and I also rooted the phone when it was on Froyo through the manual superboot process.
