Best practice for backup/restore settings from flash to flash? - XPERIA X1 ROM Development

Hi All,
I just got my X1 a week ago and have probably flashed it 5 times already. Flashing seems to be reasonably quick but restoring my settings takes a while. Is there a quick way to backup all the settings so that I can restore them quickly after a flash? Appreciate any insights - thanks!

How to..make a full bckup on new ROM without problems

Hi guys.. I keep reading your beautiful forum everyday, learning some...
As TheLastOne says, one must do a fresh install after a new ROM upgrading, avoiding the backup to overwrite some file of the old Rom.
My question is... is there a way to restore programs anddevice settings (like buttons config, rings, passwords, network settings etc) withouth making conflicts? I was thinking about a backup software that only saves custom elements.. do anybody know a way to do it? Thanks a lot. :?:
PS I read the post from Happygoat about CABs...is very tricky for me...I hope ther is a easyer solution!!!
There are two programs out there that make decent backups...
1. Sprite Software
2. SunnySoft Backup Manager
Both can be customized to only backup personal data, such as phone number database, etc.
To backup settings, the only way is to make your own cab.
What you do not want to do, is to backup everything, including the registry, and restore it after a ROM upgrade...!
These backups are nice to have if your ROMs stay the same...but if you upgrade/change ROMs, and restore such a backup, your PDA could become unstable. This has to do with the fact that the ROM update uses its resources and registry different, and writes programmes differently.
Hope that clears up things for you.
Thank for clear and fast reply @ HappyGoat..
So I will wait for a definitive "guide" from you about registry and settings CAB saving and try out the softwares u mencioned..by the way those sw save and restore also programs relative registration passwords?
I have made a full backup file on my storage card of my registry with PMH, now I think to do the follow:
1) backup all programs and data with Sprite software on sd card
2) upgrade to new rom and hard reset the device
3) reinstall PMH and restore registry
4) reinstall Sprite and restore programs and data
5) ... it will be ok ? I hope so because I really don't understand how to follow step 2 from HappyGoat guide
Thanks for pacience.. (TheLastOne...can you give an opinion..?)
Vicer,
Check this below link from Sprite Software for your Sprite backup.

I can confirm that you can successfully backup after a ROM upgrade and you wont lose any new ROM functionality after restore. I have tried this with various ROM upgrade and it works. Follow the instructions and every thing will be fine. However one thing you should note that when you restore from the old rom and if the program get stuck at one point, then dont feel afraid just soft reset and restore again. Remember that if your restore is finished with out any warnings it means that it is restored perfectly.
I hope this helps and if you need any information then please let me know.
Hemant.
Thanks a lot Hemant..I will try soon!!!
Thanks Hemant, I've been looking for this answer for a long time!
Backing up the rom because of garanty. How to?
My question is: how to backup the entire rom, when we got the device for the first time?
Cause, if the device gets with a problem, and went to the "doctor", the garanty is made (at least where i live), by the original rom.
Someone can help me out?

Unfortunately I had many problems after the restore with Sprite...I reinstalled all from scratch and now is all ok (unless I downgraded radio to 1.10 that is more stable in my opinion) Ref your question... I'm not an expert but I read the wiki everyday...and:
1) follow the getdevicedata procedure to know your original SHIP rom.
2) find on the xda ftp site the one that mactch exactely with your data
3) you dont need more to dump your Rom!! anyway on the forum you can search for "dump rom on sd card" to find the answer to your original question. Hope this helped..byez

Restore backup after rom updated

Hi,
first at all... THANKS TO EVERYONE!!! ... I've reading everything during a few days, because I didn't receive correctly the calls... I finally I got to update the rom; now I have to check if I've chosen the right one.
The question is: I made a backup of everything when it was wm 6.0, can I restore it after upgrading, knowing it is a different rom, and the wm version is the 6.1????
Thanks again!!!
No,
Don't do it, you'll have to hard reset because there are too many differences between the Roms (even when changing between WM6 Roms).
I would only restore when going back to the original ROM that I backed up.
thanks guys!
it is great to find people who have fronted already the same problems
then I'll just try to create a few direct accesses to the programs I installed in the sd.
Thanks

ROM update -> Format?

If i update to the latest ROM (1.93), will i then lose all my data and settings? I have tweaked the phone a lil with advanced config. And added a few programs, and some are on internal storage and others on the phone itself. Im only going to update if it changes NOTHING but the updated stuff. I want to keep my tweaks, settings, programs, EXACTLY as it is. If thats not possible, then the update system sucks imo. Ill leave it as it is, cuz it took too much time tweaking every setting to suit me in the first place.
Ive recently updated my phone to the 1.93 WWE rom and it will remove all your settings from your device.
Your 4gb internal storage will be untouched (provided you follow the instructions and format your phones memory only and not the internal storage) youll be fine.
I found that programs like the Diamond Tweaker help getting the Diamond back to how I had it, altho I did do a Sprite backup, which restored all my texts and contacts, phew, so thats what was important to me. (There are options in the Sprite Backup software to backup only certain things on your phone so you can pick and choose what you like)
1.93 does have a significant speed improvement and im very happy i did upgrade (just gotta get rid of the email notification on the touchflo3D screen as it didnt back these up correctly as it says i have emails when the account isnt there)
But thats not a major issue and i haven't really looked indepth for a fix for that (im sure there is one, thats the beauty of the Diamond, there's usually a fix...somewhere!)
hehe!
If your not happy with having to restore you phone back to how you have it I dont blame you for leaving it as it is. Good luck with whatever you decide!
use sprite backup and restore using upgrade mode (level 1) all your apps/settings/preferences/pim etc will remain so long as your device doesnt change.

Nice one! Thanks for that. Will remember that for the next time I flash my Diamond.
You do have to watch out if you have the Call History tab add on for Touchflow that I found in the Diamond Forum as there are 2 different versions one for 1.37 roms and another for 1.93. I did try using the Sprite Backup software which restored everything but my clock was going mental.
Hard Reset the phone and then just restored my contacts and everthing's fine now. I will stress thats an add on problem and not a Sprite Backup issue.
Thanks for the heads up darthblane2k
im not sure if its a special version of sprite - but its certainly the one on the HTC e-club website.
A level 1 restore is if you are upgrading the ROM on the same device
A Level 2 restore is if you are upgrading the ROM on another diamond device
A Level 3 restore is if you are changing to another model device and only want basic info, eg PIM and stuff
Thank you all for your help. So what i have to do now is, download sprite backup from e-club? Back everything up, and then update to ROM 1.93 and then restore level 1, right?

Yes, you restore in ROM Upgrade mode. Think you have to change a setting in Sprite restore options to set it to level 1. Also you have the option to restore databases (eg emails contacts, calendar etc)
Thanks, im gonna try that now. But i dont seem to be able to find Sprite Backup anywhere on e-club. Can you tell me where i find the app? Also, where do i get Net framework 3.5 from?
Alright i found the CAB file for NET Framework 3.5 but when i run it on my phone it says it cant install right away. Anyone know why?
Nevermind. I dont feel like relying on Sprite to backup everything. And i dont feel like copying over all my files etc, to internal storage. Too annoying. Thanks anyway. Wish they made it easier.

Sprite backup for a rom upgrade

Now that the official Orange rom is out, I want to upgrade.
I'm no stranger to upgrading (I flashed my old tytn quite a lot), but I always hated having to set everything up again.
I know it will only take a couple of hours, but I'm lazy!
I use sprite backup to backup everything to the internal storage, and I know sprite has a 'rom upgrade' feature. As I'm only planning on upgrading the stock 1.37 to 1.93, I'd like to know how safe restoring the sprite backup over the top will be.
I assume that the way it works is that files changed in a rom upgrade (for example the camera app) aren't writable from within the device, so sprite will just ignore these. This way all my normal apps will work fine and new versions of updated apps which are part of the rom will be ok.
Has anyone actually tried this and got any comments? Should registry tweaks stick (ie enabling gps photo, fixing the phone call screen blanking etc..)?
Sprite has three restore modes - i cant remember what they all do exactly but it is something like
1. ignore that it is a ROM update
2. Think of it as an update to a newer version of a similar ROM
3. Think of it as a totally different ROM
One of them should work but either way you will have a back up of you texts, email, diary etc. and worst case your can install all your apps/tweaks again.
btw. where did you find the official orange update?
Cheers, I've seen the options but I'm always skeptical about something like that actually working!
You can find info about the official rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426120
(plus a link to download it directly from orange).
I think I'll just make a list of my installed apps, use pimbackup (as well as sprite) to back up the pim databases, and give it a go.
Worst case scenario is that it takes a while to get everything installed again (although if this is the case I might go for an unofficial rom)
sprite works better than pimbackup

Questions about changing ROM

The first time is always the hardest.
Recently I've been playing with the registry to try and lower the 'lowest volume' setting for my headset with no success. Apparently I need to change the audiopara file. I'm thinking that changing the ROM may help. So here's a few questions:
1 - If I decide to go back I can download my original ROM from here (Generic Australia R3AA013 Software Update)?
2 - Do you reckon Christians 6.5 ROM is pretty good? Do you recommend changing ROM?
3 - Does each ROM come with it's own registry etc or do they rely on stuff on the phone (does flashing the ROM remove everything?).
Thanks!
.... sorry can't post links. Feel free to recommend a good 6.5 ROM.

1 yes
2 best find out for yourself; the earlier the better
3 yes and no; no, the rom is replaced and most probably rilphone.dll, but radio and spl are normally untouched
cheers
Hey guys. I just got my x1 back from repairs (they fixed the nasty crack for free XD) and wanted to know if I can Hardspl again. When I put the stockspl, the page said that dont bother using this if you are gonna put hardspl back. But I had to for warranty reasons.
Anyway...can i just flash hardspl again?
Thanks in advance

1 - Sweet.
2 - Changing the ROM takes a bit of effort just wanna be sure it's a good move.
3 - Okay - what is the radio and spl?
Cheers.
That Energy ROM looks pretty sweet. May go for that one.
Another Question;
The 'NEW ORIGINAL X1 and X2 ROMS update 3.2.2010' thread lists all the original ROMS (in my case Generic Australia R3AA013 Software Update).
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475482
So could I restore my X1 to it's original ROM by downloading from the Link above?
Why would you choose to take the time to back-up your ROM if you can just download the original?

1. Yes.
2. Some people flash their phones 2-3 times a day, so it's good to have something to fall back onto where everything is setup the way you want to. That being said, I don't back up my ROM, I just do a clean install every time I reflash.

Cool, thx.
When you do a hard-reset, which I've done recently, that take your phone back to square one. So I guess what I'm trying to work out is if it's necessary to back-up the ROM. Basically I'm being lazy.
I've downloaded two ROMs to try - Christian's ROM and Firestone V6.1.
HELP:!!! my x1i phone not running
lastly , i 've installed a language supporting program , then i restart the x1i but it did not boot again , it just reach to sonyericsson logo and still there .... i've tried hard_spl and all of these stuffs one by one. but when it connect to the device -as i remember the third step- it shows the the current verion: -it does not show any thing here- and the next version , 1.00.x or something like this.
when i clicked the next button i show the progress bar on each of tow (pc and x1i) and then stay on 0% for about 3 min then it show the recovery wizard , some time it said that "lost connection" others nothing but recovery... x1i here still showing the progress bar as 0% , so i remove the battery or soft reset to go into the recovery wizard , then i shows successfull recovery ... but i don't see any respond on the x1i , it's the same status , no boot no ability to update or or ...
when i connect the x1 and go to boot loader(manually known buttons) the Win XP (mine on pc SP2) show new device and good install driver and successfull driver installion on the first time and then just shows the sound of plug in the device or plug out...;
sorry if i said too much here . just i want to make it shown to all.
thanks for all who will mention even "i 'll try to ask for you"
good to be here

I would advice on backing up your personal things: contacts, mail, messages, some settings if you want (like hw keybd layout...)
to back-up a rom is only useful if you change reg settings often and want to have a backup in case of system crash/failure
as you intend to change your rom once in a while a backup of one specific rom doesn't make sense you see? preserve your personal data, that does it
pim, sprite, spb, synch, myphone, ... there are many ways, read about them and decide for yourself
@truthglow did you try with your sd card taken out?

I've my person data sorted. All my contacts are stored in Windows Live - so all I need is the Windows Live app to retrieve my contacts.
I use online sync for my calendars - so no problem there. Don't care if I lose my SMS messages.
I've copied across any pictures.
I store all the .cabs for my favourite apps on my SD card.
I made some changes to the registry to try and adjust the headset volume but to no success.
So probably don't need to pack up my Rom.
I like the look of Spike's X1.5 ROM.

sounds reasonable so far
you can use apps to automatize (to a degree) the restoring of personal settings/apps/progs/data/...
e.g. with user customization (UC) or sashimi
that's especially useful when often flashing an update of the already installed rom, as menu structure and general reg layout is similar (expect for certain update)
that way you can easily get most of your customization done without major effort (except of course for the one time you need to config your uc tool), right after flashing, some roms even check for uc configuration during rom customization process
about the reg edit: did the adjustment not work or the export of the changed setting?
yes i did it

^ I edited the registry in an attempt to decrease the headset minimum volume (I found the minimum volume too loud for in call & listening to the radio).
I have since learnt that I need to change the audiopara file. But I don't have the expertise. So I'm hoping my new 6.5 ROM's headset volume is a little quieter .
