I know this might be the wrong forum. But where else would I post a question regarding the two phones...
I currently own a G1 and I'm more than happy with it!
None the less, I've been tempted to get myself a G2, Magic, MyTouch, or whatever the official name is at this point
The G1 has 192mb of ram, so does the G2.
Only thing different about the G2 is the rom, which doesn't really matter to me. And the better Camera, which is sort of nice..
Now, I know there are 288mb of ram versions of the G2, but does that really account for not having a keyboard?
I can't really make up my mind.
I'd like to have 288mb of ram, but I'd miss the G1's keyboard...
Anyone out there that went through the same struggle on deciding which phone to keep/get?
Thanks in advance

the camera is the same on the g2 too
I believe that only the 32a boards have that much ram, and from cruising the other boards, I believe that the google brand phones like the mytouch has the 32b board like ours and that has the lower ram. In conculsion, I think you might have to get an overseas one from ebay or something to get the extra ram
The camera is the same on the G2? What a bummer.
Looks like I'm just going to keep the G1...I mean, If I were to get the G2 with 288mb of ram I'd gain...nothing. Since I'd still be running cupcake, speed wouldn't be an issue and I'd rather keep my keyboard.
I'd still like to hear from those who have made the switch to a G2. Do you like it? Why or why not.
Thanks to all who have responded!
The biggest thing would be the reason I got a G1 in the first place.... a physical keyboard.

Yea...that's why I will probably stay with the G1 for some time. Until something better with a keyboard comes out.
g2 is actually the g2 touch for tmobile uk aka htc hero
get your names right. the tmobile US mytouch was NEVER called g2.
mytouch = google branded ,tmobile US with 192mb ram
htc magic = htc branded with 288mb ram but no US 3g support
Dude. The G1's only been out for about a year now. Wait another two, and then pick up one w/ a keyboard and the better stats you'd have then.
'Till then, just keep killing your SD card w/ the linux-swap partition unless you think CompCache is your thing. Tweak the settings 'round, see what comes of it. (Overclocking + CompCache = almost as good as anything coming out on the market, natively speaking, for at /least/ the next year.)
The G2 is the Hero lol.

G2 used to refer to the HTC Magic / HTC Sapphire, until the release of the MyTouch, which changed pretty much all of the names.
Also, don't try to bash when you don't even get your specs right.
The HTC Magic does not have 288mb of ram. Only the oversea Magic's have 288mb. A trip to www.htc.com could have enlightened you.
But wow, way to get all pissy over a few mixed up names because every provider likes to change around the names of phones every 5 minutes.

Although I agree he did get a little testy when correcting your error, he never said the us magic has 288mb. The only us version of the magic is the mytouch 3g, you can't buy a US magic besides it. The HTC Magic is a overseas phone only, so you must not have understood what he was saying.
Damn u.s always get ripped off, overseas they get the magic and all we get is a water down mytouch which just sounds perverted, and name wise the g1 sounds like a gay sex toy maybe a sawzall with a weird attachment..........nasty mental image.......get out of my head
Well it doesn't really matter what the name is or how much ram which version does.
In my opinion, a little more ram is not worth the switch if it means losing a hardware keyboard.
Thanks to everyone who responded!

I have had a similar look into g1 vs g2 in the UK and...
I ordered the G2 from Tmobile UK but they sent me the G1 which at first I was like no way with.....BUT!
After looking at the specs on the net the Dream (G1) and the Hero (G2) Tmobile uk are not much different.
The Hero has 256mb more RAM and ROM that the Dream but at the expense of the keyboard. The screen res and processor are the same speed. I am thinking the only reason for the extra RAM and ROM is to support the Sense UI interface of the Hero and thus id be be swapping a useful hardware keyboard for extra widgets.
I have 3 screens to mod on my G1 not the 7 of Hero but I suspect if you mod all 7 screens with widgets the Hero will be about the same speed if not slower that the G1.
I personally cannot see the point of chaging it now as the full QWERTY is worth more than a few widgets most of which can be found on the market in variations anyways.
In short wait until the bring out a decent G1 upgrade with Keyboard. Who knows HTC might actually get there finger out look at the likes of Sony Ericsson and Samsung and think hmmmm our processors are a little slow and beef the next gen android up a bit.

well my g1 is pretty beat and my upgrade is comin up. i need some recomendations on a new phone. im on tmobile and im thinkin about the cliq since its the only one with a key board. i have big boy hands and the screen key board is a hassle everyone i tried at the tmobile store was a pain in the butt to use. is there any upcoming phones i should wait for that have a key board or is the cliq my only option
With Tmo? The Cliq is the only other Droid with a keyboard. The Nexus One (which I've ordered, so I may be biased) has a larger screen and is supposedly easier to type on.
For the record, I also didn't think I'd be interested in anything without a hardware keyboard... but the N1 caught my eye. Time will tell.
The Moto Droid is the best option with a keyboard. Might want to check out the GSM version of it - might work on T-Mobile 3G, but you won't be getting a subsidy contract for it.
I know you want a hard keyboard but... Nexus One.
iPod touch has a 3.5 inch screen, had it for a week and can type as fast as I can on G1 Hard kb
Nexus One has a 3.7 inch screen, just as fast with less mistakes, I bet
Gotta love when people listen, nexus this and that is all people waffle about.
Been looking to upgrade myself but screw the nexus and virual bloody keyboards! I want a keyboard plain and simple!
Google need to quit trying to be a fookin iphone! Looks like me and my G1 will just have to wait and see. There are a shedload of new devices coming with the android operating system so i'd sit back a few months and see what pops up.
Nexus can kiss my shiny white butt cheeks!

My contract ends the 6th of june, so hopefully there will be a good phone with a hard keyboard out by then. I could probably use a soft one fine but, well, i don't want to Also, nothing about the nexus one really stands out for me. Yeah, sure, spec wise it's amazing, but the android it's running is just too similar to what i'm running on my G1 atm. I want something different tbh!!
I do like the look of the X10 though, shame it doesn't have a keyboard

Going to be getting a new phone for my birthday this week. This will be my first ever smart phone. I have sprint and was wondering what the recommended phone was. The Sprint store has both the Hero and the Moment. The only diff. seems to be the full slide keyboard. From a total noob perspective can both be rooted and have hacked apps put on them. I didnt see a guide or section for the Samsung Moment thats why I ask. Anyways any help would be most welcome thanks again in advance for all your help
Wait 3 weeks and get the EVO. If you're impatient, get the Hero. Anything is better than a Samsung.

Also, please dont ever discuss "hacked" apps here. Its illegal and Xda and the community does not condone "Warez" here.

agreed. close the thread end of discussion.
If you can afford the EVO then you should wait. Otherwise, if you really can't put that extra $100 into the EVO then I say the Hero but I am biased. What I feel it really comes down to with these types of phones is what you state... the keyboard. Some people really need a physical keyboard and some don't care. That is the biggest factor in my opinion and one of personal preference.
Just remember you can bring the phone back in 30 days and get a different one if you don't like it.
Get the Hero and you will be able to go for the EVO when it comes out with Sprints 30 trade in policy. This way you can get used to an Android phone to start.
Do you want a keyboard or not??
also you might not want the evo because if you are in a 4g area there is a mandatory $10 a month charge.
Keep that in mind if you are considering that option. Supposedly if you are not in a 4g area then they don't charge you.

I was in a corporate store yesterday, asking that very question. I was told you pay the $10 whether or not your area has 4g. On the upside, I did put my name on the waiting list. You better believe I'll be there at 8am on 6/4 to pick mine up!
I went from having a blackberry to the Hero and I definitely miss having a physical keyboard. There are better keyboard apps you can get on the market that work better than the one installed on the Hero. Add a screen protector and it'll help your typing accuracy as well.
But, if you don't mind the bulkiness of the Moment then go with that.
Both phones can be rooted. You can find a lot of info on XDA if you put in some time.

I think I will try the Hero out and see if the not having the keyboard will be an issue. if it isnt that bad then with the evo and its larger screen then I think i will def be able to get used to it. the $10 a month isnt that big of a deal if it really is sooo much faster like they claim. I just want to say thanks again to all those who took the time to reply
hero vs moment
the difference is not just the KB..
Moment is Samsung and they do not support the product well once they release the next phone.
It does not have the HTC sense, I really like sense. some say they prefer plain android.
Moment has higher hardware specs, but some say the Hero runs better and more responsive.
Moment does not have the same amount of support from forums like XDA.
also.. I am bais!!!!
A friend was looking for a new phone. She was looking to switch to Sprint and I looked through their selection and decided on the Samsung Intercept for her. She wanted something easy and functional with a very short learning curve. She got the phone today and I was playing with it and it really seems like a piece of crap. The screen is horrible (I have an EVO so it may also be the fact that I'm comparing it to that), the phone feels cheap and the buttons are very unresponsive.
She has 30 days to return the phone so I was really just looking to get a general idea, from some Hero users, if the hero is a good buy at $150. I don't know a lot about it's capabilities, I believe that I just read that it was recently updated to 2.1. I was looking around and there seems to be a good root method and some quality roms available including CM6 so I know I can expand it's functionality. I'd appreciate just some general comments on the phone and any issues anyone has had with it, thanks.
Does she like physical keyboards? Then the epic might be worth checking out?
If not, I'm satisfied with my hero, its just a little underpowered but with cm6 and oc its very usable.

I was thinking that it was a bit underpowered. It's been out for a bit as well which is why I suggested the newer Intercept. The physical keyboard thing was my suggestion to make texting easier. I don't have an issue with typing on my screen with my EVO but that's because the screen is huge. I thought about the Epic but I really think it's way too much phone for her. She has 30 days from yesterday and the Epic is supposed to be released on the 20th so I may suggest that if she's unhappy with this one.
I just bought this Hero used after returning my Evo. $125 in near prefect condition. I'm very happy with it. I used to swear by physical keyboards until I got used to Swype, now its all I use. So many custom roms and things to chose from to do to my phone.
You're milage may vary.

I actually love my Hero right now, but would LOVE to own an EVO right now
But, I was pretty amazed to see that the Hero CDMA used to be just $49.99 or something from Sprint, and NOW, it's $149.99! Crazy huh?!? Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that crap. Now that they probably got rid of they're massive stock pile they had when it first came out, ppl are probably still wanting to get it. Especially since the EVO is sold out every-freakin'-where.
If she is a new customer Radio Shack has them for 69.99, but it was 49.99 at my local store.
Crazy thing is they want $529 for the Hero unactivated and only $499 for the Evo unactivated
Radio Shack HTC HERO
Radio Shack HTC EVO
I wouldn't mind getting an Evo, but in a couple more months we should have either 2Ghz processors and/or dual-core processors which will blow away the Evo. Once Camera preview and GPS is completely working in CM6 the Hero will be 10X better than it was. I am happy with my Hero.

That RS link doesn't work but that's the same she paid for the Intercept at RS. If that's true I might definitely tell her to switch to the Hero. She was looking for advice on a new phone and she said simple, but me being me, I couldn't bring myself to recommend any of Sprints lower end phones. Consequently I've become the buffer, easing her into learning how to use Android (Not really all that difficult but she couldn't figure out how to use Google, lol) Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into it.
On another note: I have an EVO. I was really looking forward to it's release and I can honestly say that it's exceeded all my expectations. My last phone was a Touch Diamond so this was a major upgrade. I've always liked the Hero, thanks for the responses.
I had an intercept.. found that the touch buttons at the bottom of the screen didn't work consistently...
The Hero seems to work pretty well thus far...

when i switched from my g1 to hero, my hands desperately craved the feeling of a keyboard. over time i got used to soft keyboard especially after swype. I don't think a hardware kb is necessary unless you plan on running EMU's.
i think the HERO is amazing. compared to all the other phones i have owned this blows them all out the water. One amazing thing i like about it is the 5mp camera. there is no negative side to this phone for me.

I have fat thumbs and I have no issues at all with the evo's keyboard. I thought I might be better off with a hardware keyboard and was disappointed theat the evo didn't have one. Since I got it though, I've had no problems with it and I've had it since launch day. The screen is so big that it's much easier to use than most phones physical keyboard.
Coming October 1st, Sprint is opening up its SERO exclusivity to allow for Android phone upgrades.
The cost for upgrading to a non-4g phone is an additional $10 per month.
The cost for upgrading to a 4g phone is an additional $20 per month ($10 for a "non-WM" phone and $10 for the 4g tax just like the EVO and upcoming Epic).
I just called up Sprint and verified it through the CSR person I spoke to. She said that this information has been given out company-wide recently so everyone should know about it.

Even though I'm afraid that this news is going to scavenge users from our community, I think a lot of people are going to be excited about this. Especially since dzo has said that he's going to be moving on from a Vogue in the near future. *sigh*
I know I'm definitely looking forward to it since I'm dreading the day dzo moves on. Haha!
What about you guys?
I didn't see this in any of the threads, so excuse me if I missed it...
I don't think there was a dedicated thread, but this was discussed a bit in the Wildfire Rom thread.
Anyway, I am definitely looking forward to it. While Android (2.2) is running pretty great on my Vogue, it would be even better to have a native phone with an accelerometer and possibly a slide-out keyboard (I'm unsure if I will get a used Hero or something else at this point.)
I am pretty stingy though, so while I think I could do another $10, I'm not sure about the $20 It would be hard for me to justify increasing my cell phone bill by 66%!

Agreed! Haha!
yea, I'm thinking the same thing. And with Sprint's minimal non-4g Android offerings, how many people won't end up with +$20/month
I'll most likely be getting a non 4g one anyway, since no matter what I get, I'll be disassembling and removing the camera because of the rules where I work. I'd much rather do that to a used, older, cheaper phone than a brand new expensive one

I'm also debating on where I'm going with this. I've used the moment and am not too keen on its keyboard. Also don't really care for the builds over on sdx. Haven't really looked at any of the Hero builds nor used the hero. Really looking closely at the 4g phones as I'd kinda like having a phone that natively ran 2.2 and would be getting gingerbread natively as well (most likely).

That aren;t really any phones that are coming out that appeal to me. The EVO is too large. One of the best things about the Vogue is that it's tiny. The Epic was the runner up but I don't see any need for a slide out keyboard with Swype installed, and for an extra $20/month I don't know that it will be worth it.
I may hold onto my Vogue until Christmas time to see what else comes out.

As the title says, I have been thinking about trading my MT3G 32B for a T-Mobile G1. I figure that the G1 is probably a better phone for me, since I do a ton of texting, and don't have a bunch of apps installed (only about 25).
What are your opinions? Do you think it would be a good idea to switch from a MyTouch to a G1?
Thanks!
Why wouldn't you switch to a newer generation android device, rather than the first android device? I mean, the g1 is still a great device, I loved it, but newer phones are significantly faster and can run more apps more efficiently.

Yeah, I know. But I'm waiting for my upgrade, which is in September. And I figured that I could probably just trade my MT3G for a used G1, and barely have to pay anything, because they're practically the same phone.
And I don't really have a whole lot of money, since I'm just 17 and don't have a job. Haha.

the g1 is only mildly harder to work with rootwise than the MT3G 32B because of spl's and such, but besides that, if you dont need lots of apps theres not really a downside.

I don't think SPLs and stuff would be a problem, since I've already flashed those on my MT3G. Also, I just rooted my brothers G2, and I know that is harder to root than a G1.
Also, would there be any noticeable speed difference between the MT3G and the G1? Or is the only difference having less storage space for apps?

the g1 is only mildly harder to work with rootwise than the MT3G 32B because of spl's and such, but besides that, if you dont need lots of apps theres not really a downside.

Well, for whatever reason, the g1 does not clock as high stably, so that's a minor downside, but other than that they are the exact same chipset and board. So there's prettymuch no difference except for the keyboard. As long as trading it wouldn't affect your ability to get an upgrade in september there isn't really a downside. However, if trading for the g1 would eliminate your ability to upgrade in september I would just stick with the mytouch for 10 months and deal with it till you can get a newer gen phone.

Yeah, I should probably check on that first. Thanks!
If you aren't trading/buying the g1 from tmobile, like if you get it off of craigslist or something, then it wouldn't affect your upgrade capability, but if you get it from tmobile it will. My friend just gave me a mytouch slide a few weeks ago, but I can still upgrade in september since I didn't get the phone from tmobile

Yeah, I wasn't planning on getting it from T-Mobile anyway. I was thinking about just buying a G1 on eBay, and then maybe selling my MT3G. There are some G1's on there that are in pretty good condition, and are only about $50.
