Is it worth me taking a new dream from Tmobile UK and rooting it to get a Hero ROM so I can have the new UI ??
Are there any problems with the ROM ?? that would stop it being used day to day ? also is it worth trading googlemail push for Microsoft Active Sync for Exchange which I used before on my WM device. ??
Hero is a port from a device with higher specs so to run on a g1, there will be a noticeble inherit slowness. I believe you will still have gmail on a hero rom though. For day to day use I would use a cyanogen rom. If you do want to run hero, you will need to partion your sd card into 3 partions, hero also has problems missing text, no bluetooth and no led notiifacations
Thankyou
Sounds pretty much like its not worth it then shame cause i love the dream QWERTy keyboard trying to type emails with on screen keyboard is a nightmare.
are there any screen shots of this ROM you mentioned ? What is good about this ROM ?
I just got the Dream yesterday it was supposed to be a Hero but they sent the wrong phone and offered me line rental discount if i kept it.
I just not sure if I should send it back and get hero.

it depends on how much you want the physical keyboard. personally i wouldn't be able to give it up. the cyanogen rom he mention looks like a stock rom unless you theme. sorry don't know where i can get stock screen shot right now. you can probably google it though.
Go over the devolpment sub-forum and go into cyanogenmod thread, you can see screnshots there, go witht the stable version which is 4.04, basiclly the feel and look of a stock rom but optimize for performance, it is the top rom for speed and stabilty at the moment. You can also download the cm updater from the market to stay on top of updates and a easy way to flash for now on. But make sure you make a nandroid backup for a just in case cause every once in a while you can get a bad download. Highly suggest also flashing cyanogen's pimped out recovery 1.4
Thanks for the info I might just hold off for a while and see how I go with stock ROM although I suspect I need to do something cause i am struggling to find any widgets that I want to use on the phone as standard

im pretty sure you could find a g1/dream on ebay or somewhere fairly cheap so if you can i would get the hero and have the g1 i mean i am buying a practically brand new g1 from a friend that is rooted with the 1.33.2005 spl for $100 maybe i just got really lucky.
You got lucky, I just got mine from t-mobile for 150 with a new 2 year contract, so hopefully my g1 won't be extremely out of date and unsupported by then. At least by then there should be a new android phone with a snapdragon or tegra processor with 500mb ram and a pyshical keyboard which will blow away the g1 and even hero. Who knows by then we might have full graphic support with some cool ass games. Just hope we can get some better battery life by then

actually gridlock is pretty much wrong.
bluetooth doesnt work but i dont need it so i can live without it. LEDs dont fully work. it shines green whenever i get something new,but it doesnt blink.
missing text only exist is some hero roms... in JACs 1.6r2a , sms works fine. there is a slowness when compared to other cupcake builds, but hero runs pretty fast in my opinion. just cyanogens cupcake builds run faster.
i really like the sense ui and included widgets. multitouch is nice. and watching youtube in High quality over a 3g network is wonderful.
i love using the twitter widget. its soo useful. i only use twitter to follow devs, android news, tmonews, and new ROM news. so its easy to keep track of what the devs are doing and releasing
also i enjoy using my phone as a wifi access point, so i can use my laptop anywhere i go.
there is lag at times, but its not like SUPER SLOW. and you cant open the keyboard while at the homescreen. u just cant yet. but in apps u can.
isn't there hero free from tmobile uk with a contract? or was that only for a while back? i remember seeing it when it was released. i would definitely get the hero then just buy a g1 off ebay or something. then just alternate between the 2. also it would take a large discount for me to keep the g1.
don't get me wrong i love my g1 but it would be easier to buy a g1 that it would be to buy a hero, just my opinion.
Ok so how do you figure I am wrong, you just backed up what I said, ok so you get your led to shine but it is still not correctly working, you backed up what I said about it being slower, I was saying hardware wise, and you backed up saying that some hero roms miss texts. Can you run your hero without swap or compchace without having a significant difference, I don't think so. Yes hero roms are getting better but in all reality how was I pretty much wrong when you said the same thing in nicer terms. Just out of curiosity. I think it just comes down to a matter of opinion

"hero also has problems missing text, no bluetooth and no led notiifacations"
jacs hero 1.6r2a has no sms issues. the ones that have sms issues are the one thats older and outdated, or the new hero roms that hasnt been optimized.
LED notifications exist. just not as good as cupcake, but they are there.
its late and i dont feel like arguing with u. hero does have lag compared to cupcakes builds, but its not major
i say get the hero and than get a g1 i got one from craigslist practically new without contract for 130=D
Just been looking down the specs
The Dream and Hero are pratically the same apart from the memory and camera.
Not really to bothered by the camera anyways I got a 12mp camera if i want a photo. The video on the Hero is poor anyways. The only thing id be paying for is widgets at the expense of a full keyboard of the dream.
I suspect the increase in ROM and RAM is only to allow the Hero to run the Sense UI interface.
I think im going to stick with the dream.....

i would trade you a dream rooted with 1.33.2005 spl and like 150 or 200 dollars for the hero lol

You're wrong.
JACHero 2.3.3 in my opinion is near as fast as an original T-Mobile ROM @ 384 MHz!
It only lagged for me, when I set the swap-size to more then 16 MB.
I think 16 mb are enough, with swappiness 20.
The only reason for switching back to JF 1.51 ADP + Hero theme is, the messaging issue.
If that gets fixed, i'll stick with hero.
Double-Post
First of all i disagree. I have used JacHero for a while and it is very well ready for everyday use. The thing that made me switch back is the battery life, not the lag (which i had none once going to JacHero 2.3). If you know how to setup your rom then it will run soooooooooooooooo smooth. IF u need help setting up a Hero rom, i will be willing to help
i agree on the laggy part, took me 2 mins just to place a call and a min to pick up a phone call.. but hey whom ever is runnin hero roms should be use to the laggy by now.
i dont want hero gone, it will improve, and if it works on the G1 then it belongs here.
my opinion is hero will disappear when google builds a sexy looking rom for the g1. google android is so plain you'll get laughed at for even showing it off to other people. but hero makes everyone drool when they see it. card carrying iphone owners who'll never switch to a g1 or any other product give hero props. so yes hero will be a thing of the past but only when the new kid on the block shows up and kicks his a$$ and steals his lunch money while mother rosie looks on with terror. LOL
-sighs- Yes I do wish they'd go away. All the devs work so hard on hero and I give them props but they're still slow. Probably b/c hero was built for a phone with much more RAM then the g1. Even with apps2sd, overclock, and swapper still not fash enough for me. My 0.02$ on this.
I'm sure it'll improve over time. there are far too may good devs working on it for it not to. I just hope that time is before htc bring out a version of the hero phone with a keyboard and I've had a weak moment and bought it. it reminds me of putting touchflo on my hermes. I think the devs have got it working smoothly enough now but I spent about a year with it running like a dog and then bought the G1.
Trouble is, that once you see these things you just can't turn back.
for me it is all the other stuff in hero that is more important. the htc versions of contacts and album with the facebook integration and stocks and weather are the things that i can't leave alone. The Rosie home screen is just a 'nice to have'
I dont think Hero should go away. after JAC hero 2.3.3 its running great with no lag. I classify lag as stuttering in animation and responsiveness. Yes I wish i would never see the loading screen after first boot but I have it down to about 10-15 sec's whenever it does have to reload, which isn't much only when surfing internet for awhile or going into the weather app. So average times a day i get the loading screen is maybe 2-3 times a day. If you dont want hero, then dont download it. I dont think it should go away just because some people dont like it. If speed is a must for your build then download a faster ROM. I dont know about you but one of the things I love about my G1 is the choices in what ROMs I want to put on. Apple cant even claim that. There is really only one choice. Yes there is a jailbreak and non-jailbreak ROMs for apple but they function the same way, just one lets you install non app store apps.
Hey guys,
I'm new to rooting and xda, I'm thinking about getting a Hero rom on my g1 but I have read mixed reviews about lag etc..
My question to you is, are you running a Hero Rom? How does it perform? Which Rom would you recommend?
Thanks, I love you guys.

hero roms when compared to cupcake roms do tend to lag at time. esp when the phone has been runign for hours or days without restart.
in my opinion i think drizzy 2.2r2 is the best hero rom for speed and is pretty stable. i am waiting for drizzy to finish his 5 or 6 rom project and he told me that dopod will be the best hero rom to date.
some hero roms tend to have missing sms...esp when receiving.. i recommend again drizzy 2.2r2 for speed but jacxhero 1.4 or 1.2 is the best as far as stability goes in my opinion. stability meaning lack of bugs. esp in the market and sms issues. but jac hero roms tend to run slower than drizzy.
I'm currently running JacxHeroskiv 1.4 (gotta love the name ) and I find it's fairly useable if you use a 64mb linux-swap partition on a Class 6 card. I only populate one screen, this is just a prefrence, if you use more than one the homescreen is still useable, but sometimes you will swipe and it wont change screen for a few seconds. Battery life is poor. It must be about 3/4 of what I get on Cyanogen Mod, but I can live with that. One of the problems with Hero ROMs is that they are made for a phone without a keyboard. So there are lots of apps that don't rotate and there are issues with the virtual keyboard and hardware keyboard which are ver annoying. If you can live without bluetooth and LEDs (they are working on LEDs) and a slightly slower phone it's worth a try. Just make a nandroid backup before hand.
My advise for the moment is wait from Drizzy Drake's "Dopod" ROM. It's based off and upcoming update for the Hero itself, to make the phone more smooth and add a couple of extra features. We don't really know when it's going to be out but I'm guessing it will be here in a couple of weeks.

According to his latest Tweet it will be released today, he is out running around paying bills, you know the normal stuff people do that have life's, unlike most of us
It's a sad day in my life when I wake up and the first thing I do is check xda for ROM updates! It's Saturday for gods's sake!! I need to get out!
Anyway
I'm running Jac's Hero 1.4 and love it! I'm not one that cares for colors (theme's)
I get NO lag or htc or loading in 4 days since switching to 96mb Linux-swap and swappiness at 60. Love them settings!
SUggest you get it if you want bling and don't care about bluetooth not working
I got back and fourth between Hero and Cyan builds. Check my signature for build types.
My opinion on Hero is this...
It's good to try out and play around with but I wouldn't use it as a primary rom for your phone. In other words... it's good to flash if your bored and with time to kill. I've never had it on my phone for more then a day or two. If you want fast and stable then go for the 4.0.1 Stable Cyanogen Rom (or the updated version depending on when you reference this and since he's updating all the time for improvements) and you won't regret it. Since your considering Hero, I'm assuming that you've already partitioned your sdcard with the ext format. This is a requirement for Hero roms but it optional but recommended for Cyanogen roms (for apps to sd purposes). If you want to bounce back and forth between roms you can use the Switchrom Script with the Cyanogen 1.4 Recovery and it's painless to do. Even without a computer. Give it a shot... the worse that can happen assuming you get past the Danger SPL part is that you won't like one and can switch back.

Ahhh i know the feeling of waking up in the morning with the hope of a brand spanking new rom out there... i do it practically everyday... haha
as for my hero preferences, I'm running JACxHeroski 1.4 as well, only with my swap at 32 and it's running perfectly. been running it for a while and only gotten one or two loading screens.
ALSO, if you check out Teh Dust's Rosie color changer, you can change the entire system colors. it's pretty awesome. i've got a purple rosie and purple framework and everything.
That about says it above. Hero has some cool features I like like flash 9 and some other cool UI stuff. Like it was suggested above and on jac's post use as few screens as possible and I stay away from the weather widget, or I choose one and it usually does okay. For me after the newness wore off I wanted my speed back! Anywho...Go for it!
It's not worth it, not made for g1 no matter what they do to it. Lags no matter what you do. Get Cyanogen's or jacxrom's build.

that's a little negative... sure, it has lag occasionally, if you do it correctly. but then again, cyan's isn't perfect either. don't get me wrong. cyanogen is my go-to cupcake rom. but it still has it's bugs.

I agree...it even lags on the actual hero itself. With that being said it's fun to show off and experience first hand without actually buying a hero. It's cool, Just not stupid fast or super stable as of yet.
And that's what I need...stupid fast! lol
Spent 10 hours today!
I am not new to this stuff...been modding iPhones since the first one came out and so forth. I spent 10 hours today working with Hero...JackHero..I think it was. I loved it! It took some work to make it work however...alot of work. The end result was i twas not fast enough for me. I thought i could comprimise becasue I had seen the demos and such...but I am more "Go " than "Show" Unfortuatly I could not get it as fast as I liked. other than that it is AWESOME!

I think the hero rom is the best one out there. The lag is not really a problem for me(using 92MB swap). However, the they are working on the update that will improve the speed. Nothing beats the Hero's UI!!
I just rooted my phone today after finally getting an 8gb class 6 so I only have one days experience with the hero Rom but so far I like it, the lag is there but I can deal with it for now...my browser is pretty fast and I get all things incoming so I'm happy as long as that works..eventually I'll start to mess with the partions to get it to run a little faster...I've been nodding psp's for years now so I know I could get the hang of this...

Not negative truthful, want him to know what he's getting into before he does it. Every build has bugs that's just the nature of the beast. Patience has nothing to do with it for me personally, I use my phone for a phone above all and I need something reliable.
I want to get a G1, then root it so that i can use sense and apps2sd.I know its not the best looking phone but its not all bad, i like the hardware keyboard.Right now i have a samsung instinct(sprint) so im used to on-screen keyboards, but this phone has given me headaches and whatnot..i want to know what you guys think is the best thing to get.
It's just personal prefrence really. The hardware keyboard is the only thing the G1 has over any other android phone out at the moment, the MyTouch/Magic/Sapphire/Ion is the same spec as the G1, just no keyboard. Personally I'd go for the Hero, because I don't use the hardware keybaord much (and HTC IME is awesome!) and it also has 288mb RAM to compared to 192 than all other android phones have (appart from the 32A Magic). Can't really comment on the Cliq, don't really know anything about it.
As far as what's out now and what's comming out in the near future, I'd definately go with the Hero, I remember reading on phandroid that T-Mobile should be getting one and I'm crossing my fingers for that. I've been playing with my G1 for quite a few months now, I'm ready for something new that will likely be able to get android 2.0 and show off some more great things that can be done with the OS
well if i had a choice i would like the cliq just because of the key board.but if i didn't want a keyboard, it would be hero for sure .but i need a keyboard ,i use it all the time ! once the click comes out i think it will have a good strong following !
we don't know of the cliq is rootable yet, and remember were talking about motorola here. Id wait a few months and see where it goes first as far as quality and development. I have both the MT3G and the G1. I like the touch better just because its thinner and nicer looking. It took about a week to get used to the virtual keyboard but like any new phone you get used to it the more you use it. As far as performance its about the same, since both are running the same roms and are set up identical. I haven't used my G1 since to be honest, I really like the MT3G. I don't know much about the hero to comment. If you want a keyboard then id just wait because there are more android phones about to be released real soon.
I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?

The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

once you root if you use the guides then they will show you how to flash a updated/custom recovery. then flashing roms is easy. boot into recovery and choose

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

totally ignore the last part. Samsung is terrible also am I crazy or doesn't need to be in a different section?
I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

ya know what? your right!
Hero's a great phone.
Unbeatable combination of style, size, power, and functionality.
EVO's only better if you have no aesthetic considerations to ahm... consider.

sweet good for you!
once you root if you use the guides then they will show you how to flash a updated/custom recovery. then flashing roms is easy. boot into recovery and choose
Code:
flash update.zip
BOOM isn't that easy.

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha
thanks for your help. great community here. hopefully i'll be sticking around.

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...
Had a question for those who used to own Palm pres and rooted them.
As of now how would you compare the Palm Pre (rooted of course) to that of a rooted Hero (say mine, AOSP 2.3.3)
Does the palm offer anything better than the hero does. Just wondering because a guy on C-list is selling his palm for cheap and was wondering if it would be worth the time to maybe switch up phones.
If i'm in the wrong thread sorry, if this offends people because its not directly a Android HeroC question, sorry again. Just wanted to ask
i have no first hand knowledge..but better? perhaps the cpu and the ability to use a touchstone..and a slide out portrait keyboard, which i do know a lot of people that liked that design.
what's not better? probably development for webOS as compared to Android...i'd imagine you can still find more WinMo 6.5 apps than you can webOS, as I never see anyone with Pres or Pixis. Everyone owns Android phones and iphones.
just my $.02
The palm is way smoother and faster, once you overclock it. I'm running screenstate 500/800 and its great. Battery life is pretty good too. Beyond that, I prefer android. There are way more and better apps. Also, tethering on the pre is harder to achieve and is a much slower connection, fwiw. Could be because I haven't figured out how to update radio/profile/prl on the pre.
Sent from my HTC Hero CDMA using XDA Premium App
Good to know
Thanks for the response. Reason i'm asking is i'd just like a change of phone for now and i'd rather not do a true upgrade, but instead maybe move to a phone that was what i was trying to decide on when i first got my upgrade last year.
Again thanks for the responses.

Be careful though, activating an "old" phone is considered an "upgrade" to Sprint, so they will charge you the new $10 premium data charge that comes with activating a smartphone.
From my Gingerbread Hero.

don't that just suck! did it to me when switching to a used hero from a hero!
man i wish we wouldve got that webos port to work awhile back until sandix or whatever that douchebags name was ruined it for everybody, that wouldve have been the coolest thing ever.
The Hero is a great phone ONCE it is rooted. If you don't have the Hero rooted it's basically a pile of crap. I'd pick the Hero(rooted) over a palm pre(rooted) any day.
And with AOSP developing an incredible rom for the Hero, it's a nobrainer.
Nice input guys
Yeah for clarification I do have a rooted hero (aosp 2.3.3) its just i'd like something thats more integrated. I liked, when looking at the pre before, how it integrated all my contacts honestly a lot better. I like having my google account synced to everything, but I've had times where switching roms and stuff i lose important contacts and it sucks.
Just trying to find a different scenery i guess since sprints pretty much put hero's in the dump.
Also as a little note i hate how we're so limited with our phones. Can't play really any games, barely any ROMs that I'd like to try but cant because of our hardware, etc...
Anyways i'm rambling... Take it easy guys

You're not going to get this answer from many people, but the best, most stable firmware in terms of integration is the stock, up-to-date firmware (all OTA updates installed). There were issues when the Hero first received 2.1, but that was almost a year ago. They have released several OTA updates since then, and as far as I know they ironed out any major outstanding issues.
Sure, it's not the latest and greatest, but it's stable. And HTC Sense does have good integration features. I switch back to it from time to time, and the only thing that really disappoints me about it is not being able to download the latest versions of every app due to API differences. But all intended features work as designed, including making phone calls. And there are Sense features that still haven't made their way into other ROM images or apps.
