1 gb card with a rooted phone? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
If I root my g1 and partition the sdcard, will I be able to use it like old times? Meaning, will I be able to take out the sdcard and put it in my computer and load and make it show up as usual and load whatever I want? Please let me know.
Thank You

If you have apps2sd and remove the card while the phone is one it will give you a lot of headaches. You might be able to put the card back in and reboot, it could be fine, but you might have to wipe your card and loose all your apps.
If you only have a FAT32 partition then you can take the card out whenever you want...

And as far as reading it on your computer, then yes it will still be the same. You won't see the other partition in windows without some serious messing about, but you don't need to anyway, the fat32 partition will show up and operate as it does now.

i wouldnt recommend using a 1 gig.. its too little.. people typically have their partitions for an sd card are 512mb for ext(mines 500mb) and 32mb-128mb linux swap(mines 32mb)
so you would haveless than 500mb of fat32(memory youcan use however you want) which is too little for my use.
whenever i root ppl phones locally, minimum requirement would to have a 2 gig sd card.

SD card issues

So, I got a 4GB sdcard the other day. It came out of a blackberry a friend of mine was using. I formatted the card to FAT32 with the utility in windows 7, and everything seemed to be fine. I downloaded ext2fsd to be able to copy my ext partition to my new card. I followed the directions from the website about mounting the ext partition.
After I performed the steps above, my sdcard became unusable. I tried to take it out, and put it back in my card reader, and I get an error saying windows needs to format the drive, if I try to format it, it doesn't work. I've tried in gparted as well, and also get an error. I even tried from Amon's revorery, and sdparted in the console. I don't get errors with the latter two, but my card reader still says it's RAW.
I know that was lengthy, but I'm trying to figure out anymore steps to take, or if I should just throw the card away.
Thanks
ok..
wow.
You have to have 3 partitons. If you only format it with 1 partiton, you cant save data on a partition that doesnt exsist.
You have to go to recovery console and make a fat32, ext3 and linux swap partion.
I dont have the patience to go trhough it all with you because its in 100 different threads so .. use search?
Not trying to be rude, but this is stuff you can fin don your own here very easily if you werent expecting someone to do it for you
EDIT-- sorry, dont think i read fully what you did. I had this same thing happen today on a friends brand new 8gb.
HEres what I did since you have Amen ras recovery..
Format to just FAT32.
Turn on usb
give it a second to pop up and it will and check the size.
Then turn off the usb, go into parted on console, rm 1, then remake all 3 partitons according to the size of the card.
I suggest not using the full partiton in the recovery because it usualy screws up the swap.
From there you will be fine.
If it doesnt work that way, then im sorry, the card may be pooped or to low a class maybe?

Yeah, I know you're not trying to be rude, but I know I need 3 partitions. I'm pretty aware of the way a sd card needs to be partitioned. I've tried everything mentioned. I think it's about time to call it quits. It's a class 2 card, so I don't think that's the issue, and I can't format in Ubuntu, or Windows. Oh well I suppose. Thanks.
You can try this app. Its called Sd formatter...it reformats the SD. IT worked for me.

I forgot to include this in the original list of things I tried, but I did give it a go. It is telling me the card is write-protected even though the switch on the adapter is set to the unlocked position. I've also tried it with a different adapter. I appreciate everybody's input.
well try using parted commands to write from block 0 to the last block and partition the whole thing as fat32
is that not working?
did you tried partitioning with RA 1.2.3 recovery?
@B-man007
I haven't tried writing the whole thing to FAT32 with parted. I'll give that a try tonight (don't have the card with me).
@cholito
I'm using RA 1.2.2, I think the script is the same, so I don't know that it would make a difference if I was using that or 1.2.3

Dwang's 1.7 rom

hey guys, i tried to post this in dwangs rom but it gets lost in the tread and not answered.
My phone has been running a bit slow lately, i want to switch to this "fast" rom.
I am currently on cyanogen's rom
My spl is 1.33.2005
My radio is 3.22.20.17
my phone is 32B, the important part is that my phone is EBI1
would I be able to flash his rom to my phone and would i need to wipe? does that mean that i need to reinstall all apps and songs and stuff?
I think you will need to load all apps again.
I am a bigtime noob, but I think I asked that question and I was told whenever you put a new rom on you have to load all the stuff again. I imagine if you have songs and apps on your sd card it is easier to install again. I want to know if having a larger or faster sd card helps it process faster? I mean, can the phone use the card as ram to help it process more,it is it more like a hard drive so just gives faster access to the programs loaded on the card?
yes it is possible to do that ram hack, search button it. Alot of ppl dont do it for a number of reasons including the 3d graphics arent as good after it. But does anyone know about the compatibility of my phone with the rom?

A Class 6 Card will make a small difference on your phone since you're running APPS2SD it'll be able to access information from your EXT partition faster than a Class 2/4 card.
There is Swapper (search in market)... Almost like a Page file for windows. You can also set the Swap file to be on your EXT partition so when you mount your sdcard it won't get corrupted, etc.
Has anyone done this.

Apps2SD noobish help

Sprint HTC Hero (Non-Google Branded)
Fresh Rom 1.0 with De-Fresh and Nexus One Boot screen
Recovery 1.5.2
16GB SD Card
So this is what i know.
1) I already know that Fresh 1.0 has A2SD support built within it.
2) I know to go to Recovery and use the format SD (I used these settings)
Swap:516, Ext3:516, Fat32: Rest ammount
3) Did this once before and it seemed that all my apps were on SD card (when i took it out and reboot, all my apps were gone. When i put it back in then reboot they all back on phone)
What i need to know.
1) How do i choose which apps/games to transfer over to SD card.
2) Where are they on my SD card? (Could not see it when i checked the SD card)
3) When you do this are all of the apps off of the phone memory? or are the apps still able to stay on phone.
What i essentially want to do.
1) i just want to be able to easily use A2SD to backup and easily transfer my apps/games back and fourth if i need to.
Any usable help would be greatly appreciated ^^ thanks.

If someone has better info please correct me if I'm wrong
1. When you install a ROM with apps2sd, as long as you have your SD card formated properly everything except for stock roms are transfered. If they were not, uninstall and install in the market and should go to SD card.
2. On fresh rom I noticed (atleast for me) that the app and app-private folders were in /system/sd/
3. All of your downloaded apps will be on your SD card. Stock apps (sprint apps and what came with the phone etc.) will still be on the phone's memory.
I use ES File Explorer and just copy the app and app-private folders when i want to backup all my downloaded apps. Pretty easy app to use and supports root.

You don't. If it's in /data, it gets moved. This means that applications that come with the phone, which are in /system, do not get moved. The symlink solution means that you cannot easily choose applications to leave on the phone.
2) Where are they on my SD card? (Could not see it when i checked the SD card)

Correct. They are on the EXT partition you created, oddly enough just like the documentation says. You cannot see this partition. If you are so inclined, you can adb into the phone and see it mounted on /system/sd.

Applications shipped with the phone stay on the phone. Data directories created by downloaded applications stay on the phone. You will still see space on the phone being used.

A2SD has nothing to do with a backup solution and is not necessary for you to back anything up. Pick one of the umpteen backup applications available in the Market and go to town.

Might have a dead/faulty sdcard slot, old parts tend to fail.
ok what you have to do now is download this program called paragon partition manager jus google it n it should be the first link., after downloading the manager open it n locate ur sd card (also u do need a sd card adapter so make sure u have the one tht came with the phone or any onther in this case.,) after u have located the card patition it., to do this u have to choice how much space u want for ur ext 2 ., i choice about 300 to 350mb range leaving me with about 3.6gb left for my personal use., after u choice the amount u want for ur ext 2 start the partition it should be a few mintues., after tht put the memory card into ur phone check if it works., i did this same procedure n worked jus fine for me., hope this helps you out., if not post back the problem.,

any reason why a second thread (both created by you, on the same topic) is nessicary???
i gave you a few specific instructions last time....
first, repartition the card (using paragon, or a ubuntu live CD) if it doesnt work then you
can try a fresh format on another SD card... if niether work then you just have a faulty slot (assuming you are on a stable/Stock rom that you know works)
and YES FASTBOOT can recognize a card while the rest of the phone wont(personal experience), dont ask me to explain it, but if you had even read my last post in your other thread youd have know that......
your G1 is probaly just old.... get over it.... it was always intended as a Beta/Dev device....
and you HAVE been reported for spamming the forum with multiple threads on the same topic (in the wrong section this time no less)..... and dont ***** and whine about no-one checking the q-a sections.... it cuz fsck-balls like you spam useless ****
MOD EDIT - Please abide by forum rules and only post a query once. No need for duplicate threads. I have deleted previous thread

Why won't my SD card partition?

Tried everything I could imagine. ROM Manager...Amon Ra's, Windows and used a Partition software. It always hangs (because it never get's past a certain point). Amon Ra just keeps going and going and going and never stops (left it for over 8 hours one time). ROM Manager says that it did it...but it didn't. Windows software also just keeps going and going and going.
I'm out of ideas. Why won't my SD card partition? It's a 16GB ADATA class 6 card. When I interrupt the partition process...I can see that it has partially partitioned the card...but not to the full capacity I requested.
It's weird because when I first got the card...I was able to partition without problems...only took a couple minutes or so with Amon Ra recovery. Now, nothing... I'm clueless...
Can anybody help me out?

did you format your sd after you interrupted the partition? maybe that will help?
I suggest you to copy all files to PC and then delete the current partition with a partition manager (do not resize it). Then, create the partitions you need again. It may be better to create them with ROM Manager.
And if that fails, you may do a surface test of your card, since it may have bad clusters. In this case I would not use that card.

Okay...so I'm going to delete the partition...then go straight into ROM Manager and see if that works.
Thanks for the replies!
