You don't need wifi, you can just visit that URL in your phones browser and download from there over GPRS/3G
If for some reason you cannot use data at all from your phone, then you'll have to use the ADB method, read through this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719

Browser hax to allow download of any file

I believe I saw it on here before but tried searching and could not find anything. Does anybody have the settings for it? The second question is, why don't the rom builders put this feature in by default?
Becuase u can get apps in the market to do it for u. Download astro from the market, it allows you to dwnload any file. Check it out its great!
Thanks, I even had Astro on my phone before I started flashing all the time and totally forgot. Even though, i wasn't aware it allowed this either.

Trying to get some files to run after connection manager - help?

I've searched the forum and the internet, and all I come up with is a ton of unrelated threads and web posts. So I resort to asking.
What I'd like to do is get an app.reg file to launch -after- the connection manager runs at first boot. The files I've included are being overwritten by the connection manager, so I'd like it to run after. Can someone please help me with this?

Want to test out various ROM's, but dont want to loose my wifi tether.. help

I'm using Fresh2.0d right now, and I love it, but I want to test the waters with different ROM's until the final sprint update is released, but whats holding me back is that Fresh has Wifi tether 1.6 in his ROM. When I search the market, I don't see this one, and everyone I do see costs about 8-10 dollars. Is it possible to save the apk file from this program on the computer, and what commands would it be exactly? adb remount, push, etc...
You're not limited to searching the market for apps.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Download the 1.6 .apk from the link that funcrusher posted. Use a file manager such as Astro to install the .apk-be sure that allow applications to be installed from unknown sources is checked in application management.
Which release works the best on our hero's?
I remember hearing something about pre-8 not working as well as pre-6 or something of that sort.. But I can't find that post..

[Q] How doe you "sideload" apps to the Galaxy S?

Hi all...
Sorry for the noob question but I am still really new with Android devices.
Can someone please explain how you "sideload" apps to my Galaxy S i9000M?
I really hope this is not an extremely dumb question but I really want to try the
z4root app out that RyanZA has created and it is not YET on the Market for download.
Any assistance and explaination is much appreciated!!!
PS... Im a quick learner so once it is explained I will not bother you PRO's again for something like this...
-EDIT- Ok... I see that this thread is not getting much response so I will add some further information in hopes that someone can explain things to me.
I am on stock JH2 Eclair Firmware (if that matters).
I want to know... How is the best way to download these apk files to my device to be installed? Via my computer and then xfered to my SGS via USB or should I download the file directly to my device?
Once its on my device, where is the best place to put it? ie. Internal SD, External SD, somewhere else?
Please oh mighty DROID experts... Help this unworthy noob in his quest for "DROID-DOM"...
There probably isn't a best way, but if you download the .apk to your desktop computer you can email it to your phone and then save attachment. I use internalsd/download because I don't have an external sd. Then use a program like Astro Browser on your phone and navigate to the download directory. Tap the file you saved and then open app manager to install.
USB or through kies will get the file to your phone easily also.
I like when people create a QR code for their files. I browse mostly on my desktop so I use barcodescanner on my phone to get the link to my phone.

Thank You Videonut. I appreciate the response and the help.
Any way works. Card reader for your SD card, KIEs, USB debugging mode, Dropbox, email attachment, web browser, bluetooth... none of it matters. Location on your phone doesn't matter either. You are still going to have to install it.
Thanks everyone for the explainations. They will come in handy in the future but for now it seems that RyanZA has put the z4root on the market and I no longer need to side load it but again... Thanks for helping!!!

Installing custom kernel on temp root? (AT&T Vivid)

I'm considering buying a HTC Vivid from AT&T, from what I've read, the bootloader for the AT&T Vivid is locked, but it is possible to temporarily unlock it. I also plan to overclock my phone, I've found custom kernels that can overclock the vivid, they say that the phone needs to be rooted. But is a temp root going to give me enough access to install the overclocking kernel? I have jailbroken consoles and HP Touchpad, but I haven't really played with Android or Linux. So if please excuse me if my terminology is used incorrectly. Thanks.
You can unlock the bootloader through HTC'S dev site and get perm root. Just follow the superguide in the development section and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to this, after I rooted the phone, how do I install the app? I have an apk file and I tried using the Android Central SWM, but it doesn't work with my phone. I have also enabled the Applications from Unknown sources. But there's no way for me to install.
Edit: I saw that it installed an app called Superuser, but I can't install any apps through Superuser, do I need to put the apk file in a specific folder in order for Superuser to recognize it? Thanks.

you have some reading to do......
That was helpful. I was just looking for a way to install apps to my phone. So far it seems like maybe I can modify the .bat script from the temp root method to install .apk files that way, but that seems risky and I don't want to mess up my brand new phone.
Seems like this is the wrong site to ask, this is a developer site, so I guess I'll ask this somewhere else.

no, you just need to use some logic, and this little thing called SEARCHING
you want to install apps on your phone?
you just put them on your sdcard or download them from the phone itself, open a file manager, browse to the apk file and click on it. it will ask to install..... you are making this out to be way harder than it is. and you did not need root for that to take place. its a function of the OS, you dont need the computer in order to install apps.....this is all basic android stuff you could learn by using GOOGLE....
and you are right, this is a developers site, it is not a hold-my-hand site for noobs.....

No need to ask anywhere, google is your friend. Installing apps is very easy, and rooting isn't even necessary. As PG already said, it's as easy as using a file explorer, and also checking that box in the settings about unknown sources.

Thanks for the link, those methods are definitely easier than what I did. I edited the temp root .bat file to copy the .apk file to the phone's internal memory, then I used Astro brower to browse to that directory, then install it from there.

dude, all you have to do is plug in your phone and when it asks you set it to disk mode...it shows up as another drive on your computer...you dont need to use any kind of bat file....this is all seriously generic and basic android usage. as i stated before:
you have some reading to do......
its not to be mean, but seriously, you are asking stuff like this in the same breath as ROOTING your phone. this type of stuff isnt meant to be taken lightly or without some READING and comprehension. know what you are doing to your phone before you royally screw it up....
at this rate, i have a feeling it wont be long before we see a help thread....
I don't understand either. Why not do it the apk way? That is the easiest method. It takes like twenty second to allow unknown sources, go to file manager, click on the apk and install it.
