I was wondering, if I don't have Data Plan, would 3g be useful for me at all, or should I just turn it off.
I heard 3g helps call quality too, but not sure if it works for me, since I don't have data plan.
Edit: I have Tmobile and yes I have i have 3g in my area
Also, is there anyway to making dialer vibrate?
-Thanks
Nope no need for 3G without the data plan.

Yep no data no 3g
It depends on your provider, obviously you need some some kind of data tariff, but not necessarily a "data plan". Where are you and who's your provider (In the UK I get 3G no problem on PAYG, but some places are mean).
I'm assuming tmo doesn't charge per mb... On my pay and go plan, data is £3/mb!! It's kinda annoying when flashing ROMs, as 3G normally gets enabled and I get charged for it :<

That is vicious, on my Virgin PAYG, as soon as use data any day it is 30p, then I can use up to 25MB, after that it is £2/MB. But if I top up £20 in one month, the next month I have 1GB of data, plus 6000 texts as a free bonus.

That's a sweet deal! I'm a really light user, only top up £10/m, but I'll look in to Virgin. I was going to switch to vodaphone as the do the same one day browsing/25mb for 50p, but they don't have any reception in my area :-(
Thanks for the tip ;-)
Just wondering, do all carriers in the UK charge by the MB? No one at all offers unlimited data?

Yeah I don't use too much, way too little for contract. I just top-up £20 at once though to get the bonus and then it lasts a while.

Virgin actually call their offer unlimited, but it clearly isn't when you read the small print. There are various levels of "unlimited" for various prices, but if you are caning it then you'd get a contract plan.
@Adam - Thanks so much for the info on Virgin. I just saw that they offer 300 when you top up a tenner, which is why I was staying with crappy O2. Just ordered my SIM Now to find out if they have 3G in my area....

Virgin run on T-mobile, so wherever they are Virgin are too. Plus that means my T-mobile locked G1 doesn't need unlocking.

Is there any way to get rid of it ?
I am not using any data connections, only WiFi sometimes. I installed NoData and disabled all data connections, then applied some registry fixes posted here to disable 3G, but I am still getting this icons, so suppose it is on .. ?
Please advise me how to disable it completely.
Thanks.
The phone will always notify you of what network you are able to connect to, regardless if you're using data transfer or not. All that's telling you is what zone you're in, try accessing a web page and if it doesn't allow it you're all set. No worries.
P.S., is data really that expensive there? It seems I hear a lot of people in Europe using apps like NoData whereas here I can get unlimited data for $30/month and it's a non-issue.

Ok, fair enough. I was just curious as to why I see it more outside the US than around me (making the assumption that you are, indeed, not in the US).

As far as I know internet is much cheaper here than in US, people use NoData because they do not have good roaming data plans and go abroad quite often. I can understand why you do not understand that, you probably don't use roaming that much as even if you drive to the west for 2 days it will still be US (or sea bed).
So, back to topic, any idea how to disable it (I am a great fan of minimalist design) ?

Yeah, a bit cheaper than here. That's like $15 USD I think.
And whoever else talked about roaming, good point. I've once in my life been out of my plan's local range, that was when I went to PR... Too poor for a trip to Europe (maybe in a few years).

If you snees hard you are already outside the Netherlands and then we pay like 15 euro for 1 mb datatraffic.
Some people who are on vacation get bills from 1000 / 2000 euro. That is why we are a bit carefull.
1 europe is still not 1 europe
Well, the lucky thing for me, when I plan on going to Europe it'll be for quite a trip, so I'll just get a local pay-as-you-go SIM to throw in my phone and not worry about international roaming. Prices aren't great on any prepaid, but a lot better than using AT&T across the world.
Thank you Hertc

Hello
I have been using the 9.99 web2go data plan part of tmobile for about 3 months now and this morning it just stopped working. I wanted to see if it happened to anyone else, and what setting is everyone else using?
i tried:
internet2.voicestream.com
wap.voicestream.com
both didnt work and i tried to use a proxy with the wap.voicestream and didnt work as well
any help would be great!
I'm also using the mobile internet from T-mobile and don't have any isseu's with it.
what you could try is the connection setup maybe it will help. it is located in start>settings>connections
They also nailed me today. THey are forcing everyone without T-mo phones to the 24.99/mo plan. Jerks.

T-Mobile internet
Acces point name: Internet
The user name and password is empty
Proxy settings tab:

could i aske you where you live. maybe its a local problem.
but if i'm must be honest the mobile internet of vodafone is much much better than the on of t-mobile. i used them both and the vodafones was much faster. but thats my experiance. now i'm using the 15 euro internt plan from t-mobile it is a little bit faster thatn the 10 euro.
Here in US, we need to put a Access Point name, but they want everyone to use the 29.99 plan, but there was a loop whole where you can use another plan but still get unlimited internet, but it seems that isnt happening anymore for some people ; (

Not at all. That used to be the case, but then there was a legitimate $9.99 internet/messages plan. It was just a $9.99 plan for a half-ass edge connection, which I was okay with. But they are trying to force us up to $24.99, STILL for a half-ass edge connection (because X1a can't connect to USA T-mobile 3G). I say we boycott.
my 4? dollar whatever it is plan still works haha. I've had this thing for like 6 years? 7? and mine still works fine.
Yes, my 9.99 tmobile data plan stopped working too just last night, called tmobile and they are positive that it's due to the upgrade of their pricing, 9.99 plan no longer work, at least for smartphones, to browse the whole web. they are pushing a 24.99 or even 34.99 plan. We say we boycott too!
that soo stupid... i havent called yet, but ill call later today and see what they say
T mo told me since i had a phone not from their network i would have to get the 24.99 data plan and the old one wouldnt work anymore. then seemed as if they were relectant to remove the 9.99 data plan. Whats the deal with that? i didnt change the rules you did!
I am in the same boat. Called and they say I have to pay $24.99. This sucks and I just joined tmobile.
I went online and canceled my 9.99 plan, and now I'm thinking of switching to AT&T 39.99 /mo + pay per MB ($2 per MB) internet. Then I would only use the internet if I absolutely need to. Unfortunately it's only 450 minutes/mo (but with rollover). Anyway, there's no way I'm going to spend $75 / mo for EDGE on T-mo. Ludicrous.
I hope others also ditch T-mo; this was a really underhanded thing they did, especially since we never got any kind of warning.
i may do the same thing, i havent had time to call them and complain about this
Good news, mine started working again today, this morning

i pay 15 dollars for my unlimited data with att ... im so loving this 3g.
I agree, same here, but did you check with tmobile again to confirm that they didn't automatically move us to the 24.99 price? That's the case I'm worried most. But I highly doubt it is so.
I am using T-Mobil's 9.99 TWeb plan and everything works great except for MMS i can receive picture messages but i can't send them. its very weird i didn't have that problem on my Htc Tilt. so i don't know if its a window mobile issue. it seems since i have been using flashed roms with 6.5 i have been having problems. i am going to flash back to original ROM and see what happens. if anyone is having the same issue please let me know, i really don't want to go back to Original rom!!
I had an unlimited $15/month data plan from back in the pre-smartphone days. I managed to get it when I had an old RAZR, and kept it through my Windows Mobile Tilt and Pure. I went in over the weekend to get the Vivid, and I managed to get it for the $99 price, but the sales rep said I needed a "qualifying data plan". I wasn't prepared for this, and since I had the kids with me I didn't have the time to really argue. I let them switch me to the $25/2GB plan.
Am I SOL now? Anyone know of a strategy for getting the unlimited back? I was never much of a data hog, I think my last month's usage was 400 mb or so. It's more the $10/month price increase that has me bummed.
On a positive note, the upgrade from an old WM 6.5 phone to the Vivid was mind blowing. Everything just WORKS, and it's so fast.
Thanks,
-Brett.
If you had the unlimited data for smartphones before the vivid, then you should have it after. If you dont, dial 611 and speak to the tech support and they can add it back.

i think you are. tbh though, 2gb is a lot for someone and very few break it. with icecream, youll be able to keep a better eye on it.
2GB is plenty. If you really are worried about it and prior to ICS, you can download 3G Watchdog in the Market. It's free and has a widget for your internet usage. Not exact, but it will give you an idea of what you are using. It will also tell you what you will end the month at if you continue your usage pattern.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm not worried about going over the 2GB cap (especially since my work offeres WIFI access so I can use that during the day). It's more of being sore at paying another $10/month on top of what already seems like an overly expensive wireless bill.
Thanks,
-Brett.
Yes you had UNLIMITED WEB prior to getting your Vivid. So that doesn't qualify for the coversion to UNLIMITED DATA. You could always try the 2G iPhone loophole
I did the same thing. Technically you aren't supposed to be able to use the $15 unlimited data package for any Smartphone, but their system didn't catch it on the Fuze (or what I had, an unlocked HD2).
I had to switch to the 2GB plan as well when I upgraded. As long as you had Smartphone Data Unlimited ($30) in the past, you can argue enough to get it added back on over the phone.
I went all the way up the support chain (And I'm an ATT Corporate Business customer) with no luck. Because I never had the Smartphone Data Unlimited in the past on this line, I wasn't grandfathered. (They checked my entire account history, all the way back to 1999).

Hey, question for you guys. I'm not quite ready to jump on these lte phones now, but I don't want to be left out of the party if and when ATT decides to stop grandfathering unlimited plans so here's my "plan".
I go into a store, tell them I have a vivid at home, show them a picture of "my phone" with its imei, have them input it and upgrade my plan to the new LTE plan, JUST so I know I have it for the future. (Unless one of you guys want to help me out, heh heh ) Thus, I will have an LTE plan, though no LTE phone yet BUT I have a garaunteed unlimited LTE plan for when ATT gets an LTE phone I really want. Any ideas why this might be a bad idea??

I have the IMEI, just not the actual phone (took pictures of a few display vivids and skyrockets). But when I got my International GSII, I called in with the atrix imei and that worked so I assumed this will work. Will definitely try this... Just the "OG" 2G
So T-Mobile's 50MB hard cap on data roaming with the unlimited data plan is seriously cramping my style. Knowing that whenever I'm out of T-Mobile coverage area, my phone roams on AT&T, today I picked up a prepaid SIM on AT&T. I went with the $65 smartphone plan, just so I could try it for a month and see if I might want to switch from T-Mobile.
For those who don't know, it includes unlimited talk and text, plus 1GB of data. After using it tonight, I'm quite aghast at some of the restrictions AT&T places on these prepaid plans.
First off, prepaid accounts don't get access to MyAT&T, neither on the web nor the Android app. This means that the only way you can check your data usage is to dial *777*3# every time. To add insult, it only tells you the amount of data you have remaining, not how much you've used. Its easy to do simple arithmetic, but couldn't they show data usage in the same manner everyone else does? I've never seen anyone show data remaining in lieu of data used.
Next, it appears, for prepaid users anyway, that speedtest.net is blocked somehow. When opening the app, it finds a server, does the ping test, then hangs, unable to start a download. Trying it over WiFi works fine, so it would seem to be an AT&T issue.
Next, they do not offer any prepaid plan with more than 1GB of data. The guy at the store said that it will just cut off after you reach the 1GB cap, but the info sheet I got says they would bill $0.05 per megabyte, deducted from my prepaid account. This would NEVER work for me if using AT&T as my daily carrier. 1GB is child's play for me. I'd burn through that in a week.
Because of all this, I'm kinda faced with a predicament. I will either need to switch to an AT&T individual postpaid month-to-month plan with 450 minutes, unlimited texting, and 5 GB of data for $110/mo and get the vast coverage, or I can stick with my T-Mobile Simple Choice plan where I get unlimited talk, text, and data for $70/mo, but am limited to 50MB of data roaming. And before anyone mentions an AT&T MVNO like Straight Talk, it's not an option for me. I have friends that use Straight Talk with an AT&T SIM, and I can tell you horror story after horror story of data throttling headaches. In addition, most of them have had issues with traffic prioritization. It can be a real problem during heavy use times in this market.
So I'm going to go straight to the source and either stay with T-Mobile or go to AT&T. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm really torn.

You should check out AT&T's $50 pre-paid go-phone plan. If they don't recognize your IMEI, then you essentially have unlimited data (HSPA+ included), voice, and text for $50 a month.

While I agree it's kind of weird that they do that, I can kind of see why. With prepaid, you buy it, then drain it. This way, you can see how much you have left before you need to reload. I'm not disagreeing with you and saying it's good that they do it this way, I'm just saying that maybe I can see why.

While one gig is enough for me, I can see if you use more. Technically, you can buy data in increments, at $25/gb. This can get expensive basically after the first gb. My solution? In your next paragraph.

Right here. If I found that I used more than one gb a month, I would go month-to-month post-paid, get better coverage (coverage isn't a deal for me, but whatever), get way more data, and get more options from AT&T, all for cheaper than prepaid. Basically, I'm paying $50/month for prepaid and getting 1 gb a month and 250 minutes (I barely ever talk on the phone, that's plenty). To add another gb would hike the price another $25 up to $75. For post-paid, I got quoted by a salesperson at my local store 450 minutes, 3gb, and unlimited texting for $70/month.
So basically, if I found myself using more than one gb a month of data, I would go post-paid, and that's what I suggest you do. That's my two cents, anyway.
**EDIT**
As for that $50 unlimited everything plan that was posted earlier: I've heard of people getting their Nexus 4 working on it, but that plan is for feature phones. Why does that matter? Since the plan is for feature phones, the data is throttled at 2G speeds. I can't remember using 2G, but I'm pretty sure even web-browsing would be painful at that speed. That's just what I've heard, anyway.
If you're having problems with speedtest go into apn and clear our everything but apn, mmsc, mms proxy

For $50/month postpaid I'm getting 500 minutes, unlimited incoming, unlimited calling between 6 pm and 7 am and on weekends, unlimited SMS, and 1 GB of LTE data. And that's on a subsidiary of Rogers which is Canada's AT&T pretty much.

That worked! I'm getting about 6 megs down and one meg up inside my apartment. That's about what I get with T-Mobile. I'll see what it's like outside with a good strong signal tomorrow.

Worked here, too. Now my only question is this: should I permanently keep my APN with just those 3 settings or does that lag only apply to the speedtest? FYI: I'm only pulling 3.6mbps down and 1mbps up with that APN on that test.

You should check out AT&T's $50 pre-paid go-phone plan. If they don't recognize your IMEI, then you essentially have unlimited data (HSPA+ included), voice, and text for $50 a month.

The $65 plan the OP is on is a GoPhone plan. I also don't see your reasoning about the IMEI. Even if they don't have the IMEI in their database they can still see your data use and there is a 1GB cap regardless of type of data used (2G, 3G or 4G). The OP obviously needs a plan with more data and the only way to get it reliably is to pay for it.

Not sure if I fully understood your post. Are you certain that on the $50 Unlimited Call, Text, & Data GoPhone Plan that there is a 1GB cap even though it states it is unlimited on the AT&T website? If so, is that from experience?

The $50 unlimited plan only has unlimited data for basic phones, smartphones have to add a data package to this plan. Which now I think I understand the other persons post, he's claiming that since the IMEI is not registered it shows up as a dumbphone and he's able to use the $50 unlimited plan as is. I didn't even think of going with that option and paid for a separate 1 GB data plan with the $25 monthly calling plan. After I use up the 1 GB of data, which I never have, I should get charged the per KB fee. Of course once AT&T adds the IMEI to their database, if they haven't already, they will tell you you need a data plan to keep that service.
So as an update, I went to an AT&T store today and signed up for a postpaid account. 450 minutes, unlimited texting, 5GB data. Unfortunately I canceled the service 2 hours later. First, I get MyAT&T set up only to discover that the app has no widget and getting to your data usage requires 3 or 4 taps. Strike one. Both Verizon and T-Mobile have data widgets so you can check your usage at a glance or one tap at max.
Strike two was visual voicemail. After sideloading AT&T's visual voicemail app, it wouldn't work. I called AT&T's customer service and after looking, the rep (who was very helpful) said that he couldn't provision visual voicemail on my account because it's only included on LTE accounts. Unless the SIM was tied to an IMEI of an LTE device, visual voicemail on the N4 is a lost cause. I need visual voicemail because navigating past voicemail messages via the system prompts over the phone is a deal breaker. If you get a lot of phone calls and messages, visual voicemail is the greatest thing ever.
Strike three was the data speeds. I drove to five different areas of town doing speed tests and never got more than 2.6mbps down. At these same sites, I would always try the T-Mobile SIM and never got below 9mbps down. The other night at my apartment, I was getting about 6mbps down on AT&T prepaid, but it was late at night on a weekday. Clearly the network is going to be busier at mid morning on a Saturday and it showed.
Luckily, since I canceled within 3 days, I wasn't liable for any charges and basically we just called it a wash.
For now I'll stick with T-Mobile since they give me the stuff I've grown accustomed to, plus truly unlimited data. I'll just learn to live with the 50MB data roaming cap.

It looks like AIO wireless just opened up for all of the US. Until a few days ago they were only available in a hanful of states but I just checked today and it looks like they are now nation wide. Uses AT&T network. Unlimited text and talk. Prices include taxes and fee's.
$55 - 2GB high speed (LTE capped @ 8mbs and HSPA+ capped at 4mbs) then throttled to slower speeds when monthly limit is reached.
$70 - 7GB high speed (LTE capped @ 8mbs and HSPA+ capped at 4mbs) then throttled to slower speeds
I just got my N4 last week and signed up with Straight Talk (AT&T sim) for a month but knew I would be switching to AIO when they were available. I have read to many horror stories about Straight Talks sneaky ways with what they call unlimited data. I would rather go with a company that tells you exactly what you are really getting up front rather then lying about it or possibly disconnecting your service.
I tried T-Mo but the service was terrible...Now just need to wait to the end of the month to make the move...Post your thoughts here if you sign up. Also will give the 3rd month free on new activations!
This seems like a really good option for people with unlocked phones and require a nice amount of data.

Finally! I've been waiting for them to go nationwide. I use GoPhone right now and it's great, but I'm always looking for newer, better deals. I might try AIO for the 7gb plan for a month or two. If I don't end up using nearly that, I'll either switch to the $55 plan, or back to GoPhone, depending on AIO's speeds/service. One thing to note: they throttle your speeds even before your cap. I can't remember exactly, it's in the terms and conditions. Something like 6 mb/s or so. After your data cap, I think it's throttled to 2G speeds.

Now that you mention it I think I did read something about the speeds they offer and it might be around 6-7mbs. That is more then enough speed to do anything you really need to do anyway.
I believe they throttle LTE down to 8mb/s. It is a shame they throttle before you hit your cap. Otherwise the 5 dollar difference in price over GoPhone is not worth it to me.

Yes, it is 8mbs capped which is pretty fast. What can you not do at those speeds anyway? You can stream Netflix or Youtube. I think Netflix for my TV says it only requires 5mbs for streaming.
I guess for the smaller plan it might be a wash although it is still more then $5 for GoPhone after taxes and fee's but if you want 7gigs of data, $70 for Aio vs. Go Phones $70 for 3gigs it seems like a no brainer.
From their page on data speeds:
4G LTE service currently offers download speeds up to 8 Mbps and our 4G HSPA+ service currently offers download speeds up to a maximum of 4 Mbps. On our 3G HSPA/UMTS service, typical download speeds range from approximately 700 Kbps up to 1.7 Mbps.

On Straight talk I just speed tested at 5.3mbs on an AT&T sim. I have gotten faster then that though.
Hmmm, capping HSPA+ at 4mbs. I will still try it next month to see how it is although I am sure we will have more feedback by then.

GoPhone doesn't throttle when you are under your data cap. LTE can get 20-30mb/s easily.

Sure you can. You need to be in an area that uses band 4. Granted their aren't many.

But you cannot get an LTE connection on the N4 through AT&T.....So even if they did not throttle an LTE connection it would not do any good for an N4 user anyway.

There is no LTE for AT&T with the N4. You can use an older radio on T-Mobile to get LTE but it will not work for AT&T. You can only get HSPA+.

Not true. Like I said earlier, you can get LTE on AT&T in the few areas that use band 4 which the N4 supports.

I had seen the third month free advertised on their website before they went nationwide, but I don't see it there anymore. Does anyone know if it's still being offered? If so, it's a no-brainer to at least try it out.
Another big question will be whether discounted refill cards start showing up online, the way they do for other prepaid options. You can easily get a $60 GoPhone plan for $57 at Callingmart.com. Right now someone's offering a $60 refill for $51 on eBay, but that always seems a little shadier to me. If those kind of deals don't pop up for Aio, it's a little less compelling.

Yes, you're right. It's still there, I just didn't read the rotating ads at the top of the page quickly enough. Here's a direct link to the offer: http://www.aiowireless.com/3rd-month-free-promo.html
You have to activate by September 29. According to the terms, you just have to sign up and keep your account active for two months, and five days before your second month expires, they'll automatically credit you with a third month free. It makes me a little nervous that you just have to trust that they'll credit your account, but what are you going to do.
Unfortunately, I just renewed with Net10 yesterday, but I'll probably port over to Aio just before the September 29 deadline. Still worth it for a free month even if I lose a week with Net10.

Nice find. I ordered the Sim and $55 plan last night so when it gets here I can hopefully activate it and get that month free.
Thanks.

What is their policy for roaming? On T-mobile prepaid, you don't get any coverage in roaming if T-mobile itself doesn't have coverage. In post-paid, it can use other operator's network while roaming.
