Hi
I have flashed my G1 T-mobile following the the one-click process in here! i have now root access. The ROM is CyanogenMod-3.9.11.2
After all that i bought a trascend SDcard 8GB class 6, formatted about 600MB to EXT4 using gparted on a live cd, winxp and my G1.
The first thing i noticed is that the phone is slower to load up. it stays about 35secs on the G1 logo and then move to android for a total of about 1min to be ready.
Second thing my free space on internal memory went from 38MB to 68MB, i believe somehow the phone moved the cache on the sdcard...if i install new programs they get installed on the phone memory as far as i understand...however i could be wrong on this. i never started the phone without sdcard since, I'm not sure if this could damage the phone in some way.
I would like to have some feedback on this (the slow boot and memory thing) if someone has experienced a similar situation.
I'm thinking to flash my phone again and move to a stable version of Cyanogen so that i can use app2Sd and Cyanogen updater!!
- how can i flash a new room, considering that i have the latest radio but not HARDspl. (as far as i understand the oneclick method doesn't change the SPL)
I was looking at using again the small oneclick software and flash the Cyanogen 4.0 this time, would that make sense since i have already root access on the phone?
thank you for the help
kirk
update
After installing and unistalling few softwares i found out that all programs are actually on the SDcard however the Mobile uses still the internal memory for the cache. This doesn't bother me for now since i still have about 68MB free. Basically if you install CyanogenMod and you don't have a partitioned SDcard all software get installed on the internal memory however as soon as you put in an partioned card all programs get transfered automatically after the first boot. At least this is what happen to me. Somehow i got what i wanted and because of this i don't need to flash my phone anymore... maybe I'll flash it again when android 2 is out, if i don't have to change spl, image recovery or anythingelse too risky
I used the 1-click method as well, and I just download the latest cyanogen rom, rename it to update, boot into cm-recovery and apply the update.
One more thing, the latest versions of Cyanogen's rom have auto apps2sd built into the rom. It will automatically move all apps to the sd card as long as you have an ext2/ext3/ext4 partition on your sd card.
Your still going to have the same boot time. It's still going to take awhile to boot, just because you have a custom rom doesn't mean it will boot faster. And to load a new rom either rename to update.zip and update or if you have the newest recovery then you can just flash whatever rom without renaming because you can flash any .zip file.
In reading your post I think you said you wanted to use the small 1 click software to download cm4.0 You are done rooting your phone you no longer need to use the 1 click software.
Just copy new rom (cm4.0.4) to sd card
unplug phone from computer
turn off phone
boot into recovery (home and power at the same time)
flash new rom
when you use one root, it flashes cm-recovery 1.4 so there is no need to rename, just put on the root of your sd and flash from recovery

Are you aware of any reason for the slow boot after partition of the sdcard??
is it the stock 1GB sdcard?
Cause it has to read from the sd during boot up and it has to run the script for the apps2sd

As far as i know i'm not using app2sd yet. I partitioned my SDcard ONLY after i flashed my phone. however like i said i think the phone is somehow using the ext4 partition for something.
You reckon this would be a normal boot time i mean it takes between 50secs and 1.05 min to be ready. Phone is stable as far as i can tell.
I myself am not concerned with the boot time, the ext4 is another filesystem that it has to read and recongize, you basicly have a little mini computer in your hands so how long does your pc take to load up, there are many files and system checks that it has to go through starting up not to mention all the settings and components it has to turn on
Bottom line, if you want something to boot up quickly than get a basic phone because there is a very good way to speed up a mini computer to do the same

Well i'm aware of all this and i'm not concerned too much about the boot time. I'm only trying to gather information and learn a bit more from other ppl experiences. I come from windows mobile and android OS is all new world for me.
have you a similar configuration to my G1? Do you run app2sd? is yor boot time similar to mine??

Just a quick question for future reference...
do i need to put Cyanogen recovery image on the root of the sd card when i boot into recovery mode?
thank you
Kirk
Why did you root your phone? You have no desire to search to even do one of the most well documented things to your phone in these forums. What you need to do is take a DREAIMG.nbh file and put it in the root of your sdcard (or in no folders), then open up terminal emulator and type su then reboot bootloader once that happens wait for it to flash that image. Then you will have the most pimping room on your phone. Also you have amazing boot times. Everything you want.

Hi David
I had specific reason to root 2 different G1 and this is not to play with it or try a new ROM or even experiment new things. I may change my ROM again when a major relase is out (i.e. Android 2 if it has something that i need)
Going back to reflashing the phone.
You now suggest me to use DREAIMG.nbh which is actually mentioned on the guide "hoe to downgrade-root-flash your phone" here
....am I missing something here?? thank you for taking the time to reply anyway.
..I have read quite a bit on this forum and i decided to use the one-click method (because is the quickest and safiest one). I thought reflashing should be as easy. go in safe mode wipe and reflash it. Anyway for my nature i tend to ask/investigate one thing before go and actually do it. My questions are:
- if i press home power right now, considering that i have nothing on my sdcard would it take me to the safemode screen?
- Consequently do i need to have Cyanogen image revovery together with the ROM on my sd card in order to flash a new version of CyanogenMod?
Thank you
Kirk
you can boot into recovery at any time by pressing home and power when the phone is powered down. it will go into recovery no matter what is on the sdcard.
Also the recovery image you have on your phone does not determine what rom you can flash.
wow... i am at a loss for words...... do you even know why you did any of the things you did? did you even read the release notes for cyan's rom's? ALL OF THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ARE THERE...
if you have an ext partition on your sd card....it WILL AUTOMATICALLY be used for apps2sd with 80%-90% of the ROM's out there today... ITS IN ALL OF THE ROMS' CHANGE LOGS/RELEASE NOTES

going into safemode wont flash anything.... i suggest you search and find out what exactly safemode is, especially since there was a thread only a few threads below yours detailing it.
All you need to flash a new ROM is the rom on your sd card and a working recovery, as well as anything that the ROM your installing has required which are noted in the changelog/release notes....
nothing else is needed on your SD card, except maybe specific partitioning, which will be noted in the ROM's requirements.
I try to help out here as much as i can when i have time (most of my posts are in Q&A helping out people) but it seems as though no one even bothers to look at the actual forums anymore. They just create an account, create a thread, bug people till a simple question is answered, and disappear forever.....
I came to this site simply to get roms, but i stayed because there was so much to learn and i created an account to help out people as well...i did all of my major modifications without asking any questions....all the questions are already answered somewhere...
i understand its hard to go through all the clutter, but it is starting to look as if no one even cares anymore
@B-man007 i am starting to feel like you do, i had my phone rooted and all that good stuff at least a month before i made an account just to download something uploaded to the forum. I wish i could see how many post i have in a ceratin forum bc i imagine at least 450 or 500 of them would be in this one helping people. Its getting to the point where i no longer care to help people and i thought i had a lot of patience. I porbably do but people are sinking to new lows with the questions they ask...
I think I have maybe 5 posts in dev, most of my posts are q&a and general, but then again half of those posts are from hijacking threads. I just got tired of answering the same questions over and over and over

Hey Guys
I really hope I'm posting this in the right place. Please forgive my ignorance
For the past few days I have tried to get simple and UP TO DATE instruction on how to root the G1. There is so much information scattered out there that its quite overwhelming. Unfortunately I only understand half of the stuff I'm reading (at best) and was hoping one of you smart folks can help a complete amateur in my desperate quest to get root
Can someone please help me with the following:
1) are these steps for downgrading to RC 29 and rooting still applicable for cupcake?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
2) what does it mean to update the radio, SPL, and ROM and how do I do that.
3) where can I find the latest versions of all the stuff I need?
4) will I be able to reinstall all the apps I've bought as long as sign in with the same email after rooting?
5) will some market apps be blocked for me after rooting?
I realize this sounds really ignorant but would appreciate any help I can get!
Think about how many times a day the same inquiries roll these boards. If you've been reading the boards for the past few days and didn't find the answer to the majority of those questions something ain't right meng. I'm not trying to be funny. I'm just saying. The foundation of everything you may or may not learn is slap dab one of the first posts in this forum.
I'm not going to get into that..but you need to. the answers to all your questions are here in front of you. It just gets frustrating (it was to me at least) at times because you might stumble upon 3 different but totally correct answers to one question. Thats exactly where i was right HERE. that was two weeks ago. jumped on the boards one friday night a wreck, by sunday night i was peacefully rooted. Slow down, think about what your doing and what you're reading. make sure you have some free time...TO YOUR SELF. get a pen and some paper right stuff down. take into consideration you might not make it in a day. yeah u might botch your way to ROOT, but unless you REALLLY understand and know how to get there...you could be setting yourself up for alot of frustration. thats all i have to say about that. you caught me on a good night...just had a glass of wine bout call it quits. sorry about any typos. good luck!

1) downgrading to RC29 has not changed. it is only different if you do not have a us or uk g1 (you will need to use a goldcard method otherwise)
2)

3)what stuff?
4) yes your apps will be there
5) depends on the rom but most have all apps enabled

OUCH! Good looking out.
OP, I followed the instructions you linked to just a few days ago and it worked like a breeze. Much easier that I thought it would, and i have no experience with this. I would suggest that when you get to the final part where you are upgrading to a new ROM to try cyanogen's stable build 3.6.8.1. It is just like cupcake (what you had) with a ton of new options.
also, his pimped out recovery.img can be used... version 1.4. I followed that guide to a T, then learned of this new and improved recovery.img file he made. So, basically the next day I changed to this version and it is a lot better.
Partition your sd card when you finish this and his rom will put all of your apps on your SD card, which frees up a ton of internal memory. I went and d/loaded about 60 apps after doing this. His rom does it for you automatically... like, no thought needed, you want even know unless you go to settings and look at the memory.... or, you may b/c of the speed of your phone. This was also much easier than I though, basically just keying a few lines of text in terminal emulator (which you will have after loading his rom above).
Any of the other experienced people have any issues with what I said?
I would also suggest cyanogen's builds. It has a lot of features and is both relatively noob friendly, feature-packed, advanced capabilities for advanced users, and fast. His 4.0 stable is just around the corner with even more features than his current stable version. There are many other ROM's out there as well, you'll have to try em out yourself and see if you like them or not. (Be careful of the ones that say you need the updated SPL, such as the hero ROM's. If your not careful when updating to that SPL [Haykuro's 1.33.2005 SPL] you could brick your phone. )
Cyan's recovery is a must
its great no matter what ROM you choose to use
If you need anything else, feel free to PM me or post here
This is how I got it to work!!!
(SD CARD READER NEEDED)
Got it to work using this tutorial. If I had found it before I wouldn't have started a new thread. Will look harder in the future!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533731
Followed steps until step 16
After step 16:
I had to install the JesusFreke rom cause it wouldn’t let me flash the cyanogen recovery image otherwise (permission denied problem as mentioned by author)
Installed cyanogen recovery image
I skipped partitioning the sd card at this point cause I didn’t plan on installing the Hero rom. If you want to flash the Hero rom you shouldn't skip partitioning
Installed latest Radio
Installed latest SPL
From here on I did my own thing:
Couldn’t boot after updating SPL cause rom got wiped by updating SPL. I had to put the new rom (Cyanogen v3.6.8.1) onto sd card, rename as update.zip and boot into recovery mode to flash it. This is were the sd card reader comes in handy.
You can find the Cyanogen ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537204
After flashing the rom it was stuck on the loading screen so I rebooted into recovery mode and did a clean swipe. Loaded just fine after that.
Created ext2 partition using Paragon Partition Manager (see threat below), rebooted and was good to go
Partitioning using Paragon Partition Manager:

Ohh lol see I didn't bother reading that ADB guide since I already had adb since pre-cupcake when I attempted to root my phone the first time.
Hello all,
I'm curious about somethings for turning my g1 to the hero (rosie?) rom (wow it looks beautiful).
The first being Where can I actually find it? I found two sites that offer it but doesn't seem like its from the developer themselves (who I'd trust more).
Secondly, which developer has the best performance (e.g. speed, ect.). I've read that it is a deadly slow Rom and I already lack patience for my g1 now (It's the stock firmware). The hero its self looks much smoother, am I wrong?
If I can't risk my phone being bricked should I bother trying it? (I had it JF rooted in the summer which I did successfully on my first try, and I un-rooted it.)
Is there a text document with how to install with a video that coincides?
Lastly, Is Cyanogen a better rom? (this has next to nothing to do with the hero rom )
Hopefully I didn't miss a thread on this I searched for like an hour.

You cant just start driving, you have to learn the basics. When you get in a car there a many things that you need to do first is learning and even taking test.
You must have root first and a recovery image and im guessing your all stock. The dream section has all the info needed to root now is up to you to decide if you want to read it.
-Best regards
Thank you. I am very comfortable with the rooting process. I just don't want to do it unless the rosie rom is worth it!
Basically, Hero is incomplete. It doesn't have Bluetooth nor full Google Voice integration, and it runs 1.5. However, at the rate the devs are going on Hero 2.1 the version it runs could change very soon.
For now, stick with Cyanogen as it is a better Rom. Hero doesn't really work on the G1, it's slow and there is a lot of core function missing. It will never be an everyday ROM. I think of it like a concept car. Its cool in a "look what we can do" sort of way, but just wait for the next HTC Android phone.

Its not slow...You must be running a super old version..Hero 2.1 roms and 1.5 roms are both very fast...King's 2.1 is very fast and close performance to cyanogen, please dont misinform people. All current hero roms are fast, in a 2.1 rom you can achieve 20mb+ free ram which is about the same to a cyanogen rom. Maybe you used a old jac rom months ago.

I'm sorry to say, but no I have tried many Hero configurations on my class 6 as recently as a month ago. The fact is that even if there were drivers for all of the hardware over time Hero really starts to bog down. It will not always perform after that post-setup peak it has.
If you want working hero wait until the first 2 weeks of January when the Passion comes out.

Going to try this tonight. Read and watched the videos. seems very simple. thank you!
need help!
When following this guide http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/ho...ps2sd-onto-your-g1-or-mytouch-3g-best-method/ (I already did the one click root with no issues)
In part II of the guide
. Download the custom SPL for your device:
T-Mobile G1 – Here
MyTouch 3G – Unneccessary, skip this section and proceed to Section III.
3. Plug in your phone and mount the SD card (pull down on the notification bar and select the SD card notification then click Mount in the pop up window).
4. After the SD card shows up on the computer, put the SPL zip file on to the memory card.
5. Once it is done transferring to the memory card and you have renamed it, unplug the phone from the computer.
6. Turn off the phone and then turn it back on by holding down the Home and Power button to get to recovery mode (keep holding it until the recovery screen with the writing and black background come up). Here i get to the ! so I hit Alt + L to get to the recovery screen. It gives me the menu to reboot, apply zip, wipe. However at the bottom of the screen it says E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
7. Once the recovery screen is up, click on Wipe Data. Once that is done, click on Apply Update.zip and wait for it to finish. I wipe the date and then apply zip. I then get this message __ Install from sdcard... Finding update package... Opening update package... Verifying update package... E: No signature (5 files) E: Verification failed Installation aborted
I'm assuming this means the SPL file is corrupt but I don't know much and probably am wrong.
How can I fix this? I got this far with no issues and so close to being done!

so my son grabbed it this morning, it froze i took the battery out. Now it keeps going to the hero screens over and over again. what should I do?
If I were you I would try re-flashing. Do you have a custom recovery.img? Like Cyan's or Amon-Ra's? If you do, try wipe cache, wipe ext part, wipe cache, and then re-flash. That's always the first thing I do when my phone starts getting buggy.
Hi there Android people.
I am having some issues with running the current Cyanogen *4.2.11.1*.
Phone: G1 Drea100 PVT 32B with stock 1GB SD
using anmon RA 1.5.2 recovery image
-wipe all available in menu.
-created a new partition- FAT32, Ext1 (upgraded to 4), Swap 32MB
-wiped all again.
-repair SD: ext
-flash signed-dream-devphone-userbug-ota-14721
-Once the flash above completed I did not restart, I simply flashed to update-cm-4.2.11.1
-reboot
Once it boots, my home process stops responding if I touch anything. This last for about 15 seconds, after that it seems to responds fine, but the browser and market place seems to auto-close on me from time to time, and I get random phone reboots, after a few reboots my phone simply stops turning on. I have to wait about 10 minutes to get into recovery and try to flash all over again.
I tried fix_permissions in the terminal, no luck.
I did some reading and noticed a lot of people are running different Radio/SPL versions other than stock, I am no super user, so I don't know if any of this effects ROMs, or if I should be flashing either for any sort of benefits I am missing out on? could this be the issue? Current SPL/Radio below:
HSPL10.95.3000
CDLP-4
Radio-2.22.19.261
Any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Why did you use "signed-dream-devphone-userbug-ota-14721"
I'm no pro but I used the base image that cyanogen recommends on his wiki page. The DRC83 defanged located here:

He used that because it is the proper image to use. A defanged file simply means that it has been rendered safe to download with no fear of infection. The link on his site is to the file used by the OP, so no worries there. Also, your radio is good, so do not worry about that either.
I have to ask, because you did not mention part of the process that should be happening. You flash the HTC image, then you do not reboot and flash the CyanogenROM. At this point you reboot. What happens? It should flash the radio, go to an HTC screen, stay for awhile, then reboot itself back to recovery where it gives a message regarding the cache being cleared. At this point you reboot for the actual boot process. Is this not happening for you?

You are correct- after flashing CM the phone will flash the radio and reboot to the recovery screen where I will reboot again. Sorry for not including that detail.
Home process hanging in the beginning is not a problem, most people have that happenning. Eventhough home screen is shown, Android is still booting up, you just have to wait a little bit for everything to finish up.
Problems with stock apps usually indicate that something went wrong with instalation of the rom (i.e HTC 1.6 rom was not installed properly) so you may want to re-flash that again followed by CM rom of your choice.
Next time you phone reboots itself, try to get a log (there's more on how to do it in Cyan's thread), it's the only way to find out what happens.
Last, but not least, stock 1GB card is not advised for swap/apps2sd because if it's slow speed (it's class 2). Get one that's faster (class 6 preffered) and try that out, it may be the source of your problems after all.
Good luck.

But in all seriousness
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
This would work. Please use search, this is such a n00b question.
Did another fresh install, so far no issues.
I will get a log the next time I install to see if I can track down the issue.
Also had time to install Enoch 4.2.11.2 theme. <3 this theme.
I will be heading to Frys today to pick up some cooling fans for the old PC, I will take a look for new mini SD
thank you to everyone that responded.
Just got home from Frys Electronics.
Purchases an A-DATA 8GB Class 6 microSD.
wiping/flashing again.
I am having a hard time learning about the swap file part of all this... I can find guides on how to create a Swap Partition, but not sure how to make it work and/or optimize it.
So I created a 32MB Swap- Previously I read the commands to enable Swap through the terminal- "linux_swap_en=1" I have used this and it does indeed turn on swap, but is there some sort of command to optimize? I believe tweaking the swap files is adjusting the "swappiness"?
The other way I enabled the Swap file was from the spare parts menu- Enabling Compache enabled my Swap file. Does this need adjustment? for size? or any other parameters? Or is this kind of an auto on for Swap?
Sorry I am a total noob, and want to know if I am missing out, I just keep loving this phone more and more.
I will be buying Cyanogen some beer soon ^_^
I've played with swap a long time ago and never quite understood it neither. As of lately, I've been running 10mb hack (in the developement section) and it works great. If you're inclined to get the swap thing going I suggest you read this thread. This will give you an idea of how to enable and tweak swap-related tasks.
Glad to hear that you have original problems taken care of (so far at least).
Good luck.
I think I just may have bricked my phone...
I did all the steps stated in my first post while flashing to 4.2.12.2 and got things going great. Flashed Enoch's Theme 4.2.12.2. Everything was rocking.
Then today, it shut it self off, I rebooted. Got to Enoch load screen then shut off, tried it again, and it won't even get past the G1 splash screen. I have had this happen a few times before, where it would power off randomly and I had to pull the battery, wait like 5 minutes and then get into recovery and clear/flash again. Now I am getting into recovery but after a minute or so it just shuts itself off again.
Can't wipe, Can't flash, cant even get into Cam+power to flash back to previous RC...
Not really sure what to do at this point...
If I do manage to get it running again, I do wonder why its doing this.
I use Cachemate to clear my catche and task killer to kill apps. Could Cachemate be the culprit in this mess, its the only app that I own that uses root? Not sure what else to blame it on other than the G1 one being one big POS and is only good if you can even get a ROM to run on it. I am 5 minutes away from ordering a Nexus.
once again thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

This sounds like a hardware issue, and not a bricking. Try a new battery, this may fix it, otherwise I am not sure.

I tried it.
Same issue.
I did noticed that the batter pins were abnormal... One was sticking out more which was normal according to my other G1, the other 2 were shoved down. I tried to mess with the 2 to get them to pop back up to their normal position with no luck.
I am thinking about ordering a replacement.
okay, so tonight I am going to take the G1 apart and see if I can get those pins straightened out. Not sure if it will help, but its better than declaring it a paper weight.
will post the outcome.
Just out of curiousity (and I don't exactly know where I'm going with this) will your phone turn on and stay on if you plug it in (usb or charger)?

It does not.
I think i will take both phones apart and swap out the screen since that is why I don't use the one. I watched a visual walkthrough seems easy enough
Has anyone disassembled their G1 and reassembled successfully? any tips?
Started to take apart the non-cracked bricked G1.
Once I removed the motherboard and started on the next step, I realized how bad it would be to end up getting the parts swapped and then have it not work... Put it back together and loaded up the latest Cyanogen on my working cracked G1.
*shrugs* it will do for now.
Waiting till the end of next month to order my Nexus 1, then I will have fun ripping apart both G1's and hopefully end up with one great looking, fully functional G1 to possibly sell or keep as an extra phone...
thanks to all who replied!
After waiting for the official AT&T froyo release with the captivate, I decided to just go ahead and flash a froyo ROM. I've decided to flash the axura ROM first since i heard good things about it.
So while I'm finishing charging my phone before the flashing, is there anything I need to keep note of before flashing so that I can prevent bricking my phone? I've read up on the forums and watched the video from connexion2005 from the post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867153.
Its pretty scary since I'm not much of a tech savy guy and this is my first android phone. Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

Backup all your apps and data with Titanium Backup. Make sure your battery is fully charged, and removing your sim and SD cards are good practice.
Have fun! You won't go back.
- Backup all your files and make a nandroid backup!
- Get Odin3 One-Click and drivers to get your phone back to stock in case you brick it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
- There may be additional precautions you can take, so read through related threads on xda.

If you've read as much as you claim to have read, then you're probably in good shape. It's really not an unsafe process as long as you have some idea of what you're doing. I was very nervous about it myself the first time, but since then I've probably flashed 20 roms without a problem.
A couple of things that I would tell you, if you aren't already aware:
1. MAKE SURE that BEFORE you flash, you can get into download mode from the phone being off using one of the methods. I'm sure you've seen the one-click flash back to JF6 (stock) that was posted - download that if you haven't. For me, removing the battery, sim, and ext sd, replacing the battery, and holding down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB works really well - just make sure Odin is running before you do that. If you do manage to brick it, you will want to be able to get to download mode and flash back to stock.
2. After moving to a custom rom, it is best to always flash back to stock before flashing a different rom; you can avoid a lot of potential problems this way.
3. After rooting your phone, backup the update.zip in /sdcard/ on your computer. Any time you flash back to stock, you can reinstall CWM really easily by just putting that update.zip back in /sdcard/ and choosing "reinstall packages" from the recovery menu again. Sometimes you may have to do it twice before it enters CWM.
4. OCLF in the market is, to me, the easiest and quickest way to root your phone, but the one click root method isn't much worse. Just a matter of preference, I guess.
Good luck! Come back if you have any problems.
EDIT: apparently two people replied while I was typing my response lol! But what they said is very good as well.
Thank you for all your help. One quick question though, do I need the android ID changer?
the biggest mistake people make is not making sure they have the button combinations to enter recovery or download. (download = hold both volume buttons own and plugging usb cable in; recovery = hold volume buttons down, then holding power until AT&T screen pops up, letting go of power but still holding both volume buttons) if either of these don't work, you must, before doing ANYTHING else, flash the stock odin one click with the button fixes; it is posted somewhere in the development forum. and no you shouldn't need the android id changer unless you want to keep the android id that your phone came with. then open the changer and click save id and flash your rom of choice. most custom roms have a script to automatically load a saved id or randomly generate one if there wasn't a saved one. good luck in all your flashing endeavors!
edit: also as bodaciousdrake mentioned previously about cwm recovery, you should always keep the update.zip that contains cwm recovery on your sd card and you'll never need to change that to something else because using cwm recovery you can flash any .zip file that you want and it does not need to be named update.zip.
Take out the external SD card before you accidently delete 10 GB of music you had just perfected the selection of. (not that I accidently did that... lol)

Yes, you need it. Download it from the market, while on 2.1, and save your id onto your sd card. After you are on 2.2, choose Load id and it will automatically reboot.

What exactly is the point in saving the phone id? Sorry I'm kinda a noobie at this and looking up things about phone id, it seems like it just is an identifier for the phone but doesn't really provide anything.
Also, how do I get out of download mode? I've put it in download mode to make sure it works and it seem I can't get out of it... I've done the 2 volume bottons with the usb cord.
there's another thread in this forum that answers that question perfectly. also to exit download mode you need to pull the battery out.

Basically, a lot of 2.2 Roms come with the same android id, 977blah... If you don't want market issues later I would suggest that you put in your original 2.1 android id. You can always search more if that answer isn't sufficient. And yes, do a battery pull to get out of download mode.
I've master cleared but can't seem to root. Every time I try with the one click root, and I go to recovery, it said it can't find the update.zip from the /sdcard/
yep, just pull the battery. also you don't need to root to flash roms. just grab the update.zip containing clockwordmod recovery from the thread in the development forum, put it on your sd card, boot to recovery and select reinstall pacakges. after that, reboot the phone (you might have to reinstall packages again) then you'll be ib clockwordmod recovery and you'll be able to flash any rom you want without having to change the filename.

For some reason I got this too the first few times I tried to root. I then noticed that in the cmd prompt, for a split second it said failed to push update.zip or something due to privileges.
How I fixed it was ran the one-click root on windows in admin mode. It worked after that.
Thanks guys for all your help. I got it to flash the ROM and it seems I haven't bricked my phone

Hello everyone,
Firstly what a great website. Thank you. I am a 'noob', I have watched the video, searched the posts etc, However as someone who understands very little technological jargon, I was looking for a step by step, recent, updated guide to rooting the HTC Salsa.
Now don't be fooled...I actually have no idea about rooting...I have only just learned about this from searching internal memory issues. However, I am good and following step by step instructions/videos etc
So, can anyone link me to the correct thread, if it has already been posted or help to guide me?
Thanks in advance

there are several others..
Now the route for rooting just got easier....its much more easier to flash a new rom.....as it comes with preroot anyway, saving a lot of time and agro!
its a choice thats up to you!
Go here >http://www.wix.com/bigbearevo/salsa for how to create stuff and do stuff to your phone! I compiled it so people could find it easier...
Thank you BBE,
however I'd be lying if I said that I fully understood any of that!!
I am happy to choose whatever is the easier option, although I am not sure which that is. I looked on your website, but I really didn't understand what part I should be following. I could also not see how to join.
So, would it be possible for you advise me again, with one option that is the easiest. I do not know what flashing a ROM is, but am happy to follow instructions.
Thanks for your patience

Lol that's nps
Ok few questions first to help find which route you want to take.
Do you want to Change what your using right now?
I mean by u are using sense stock.
Check in android development for Roms of choice to figure out what u like.
Flashing is the process in which you install a new rom.
I myself am a serial flasher, meaning while I make Roms I constantly flash my phone lol.
What do u want out of rooting?
Are u just going for the increased memory or do u want a change in appearance too?
The options are.
Keep your stock rom, root it and increase memory.
Flash a custom rom, pleanty around now, advantage with this is most things are Inc that u would have to do on stock rom.
To do this also. U may need to su things prior.
Just to start you off.
Turn off phone and pull out battery.
Reinsert battery, hold down volume key and press power with volume key pressed down.
HBOOT will appear. At the top will be alot of numbers etc. I need to see if you have old or new updates.
If u have old u may need to unlock bootloader with updates first. Easy to do.
Fill in this and choose the way u want and I shall help you succeed in your goal.
BB
Wasn't me............ ;-)
Hi BBE
I still don't understand the abbreviations: nps, su etc?
Anyway this is what phone says:
ICON_g PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.07.0000
MICROP-0558
RADIO-7.51.35.19

I am ideally looking to increase memory. My phone has been stuck without functioning properly for about 4 weeks now. I am happy to include a new ROM if this also increases my memory, but to be honest I don't really care about changing the image of my phone but am happy to do so if this helps.
I am not really sure what I am looking for in my 'ROM of choice' so there is little point in me looking unless it is really obvious? But perhaps you can guide me?
Thanks again

P.S I am more than happy to get rid of many of vodafones pre-installed applications.

nps = no problems
look in rom development section, see threads with[ROM] in it, see pictures and whats included in the roms it self.
personally if you want standard use a sense rom
Options are
Thing rom
Bigbear x series V10
Minds sense 3.5
reason i state this is the rooting part.
All custom roms have root/New SU (Superuser rights app)
This is required to run the increased memory.
NOTE Updating HBOOT?UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER WILL WIPE YOUR ROM CLEAN.
BACK EVERYTHING UP U CAN
You need to update your HBOOT.
Goto HTCDev >http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
Register (takes a few mins)
plug your phone into the pc and select charge option.
Download these >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?68k4zzzeamjwswt
extract these in to a new folder on c: called Android
now follow instructions to update your HBOOT.
Ok assuming the HBOOT is now updated via HTCDev
You can follow the rest of the instructions to unlock the bootloader, takes around 15mins or so.
So you got the email with the unlock.bin file.
add that into the Android folder u made with those files in there.
Follow instructions again to begin your unlock.
All Done.
so you have updated the HBOOT and unlock bootloader....
Good now for the next bit.
Installing CWM 5
This is a program installed into the phone itself.
This allows you to do pretty much anything you want.
Main thins are Backup and restore of your device.
Flashing of custom Roms
here is recovery >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bumma6im6fu8q4b
this is pretty easy to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438804
this shows how to install the recovery.
Once you have done this, then its upto you if your root it or install a new rom.
...................................................................................................
New Memory
So to increase the memory partition u need to complete the previous task.
Now then.
Tools required for this next task.
Minitool partition wizard >http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
SD READER for your pc.
About 30mins of your time.
Ok to start with
Turn off your phone, remove sd and place into the reader and into your pc via USB slot.
Now open up The partition wizard.
Personally id back up your sd right now...just in case.
Now select your sd and create a new partition
You want to create and EXT3 partition and select it as Primary only, apply actions, now it will do its thing, watch as it works.
Now if this has completed the sd may register as bad....don't worry.
Unplug reader and reinsert back to pc, now you should have 2 partitions on your sd EXT3 max 1gb and the rest fat32
this shouldn't have touched your fat32 section but if you didn't follow it right and it got wiped...just copy back your backup onto the sd now.
ok reinsert the sd into your phone and start it up.
now to get access to this new memory...it all depends on what rom you are using.
On stock or stock based rom which have NO APPS2SD.
all roms state if this has it or not. mine dont.
now using a set script you have to flash this in recovery mode to enable the new memory.
For APPS2SD use this >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qr5rh2fho1hnbnl
Roms WITHOUT APPS2SD >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?duigp9ky9796b65
Using the wrong one will cause problems so be very clear what u want.
reboot phone and enjoy new memory.

S-off htc salsa
Hi,
I followed your thread and unlocked boot loader of my htc salsa from HTC Dev, and also successfully done with recovery.
but the main target to unlock my phone is to make it root so that i can run vpn application as root on my phone and also get rid of low internal memory issue.
Since my phone is S-On, so my question can i make it root ( I think no), what is the solution to make S-Off. Itsn't there any solution without using XTC Clip (I dnt wanna buy such thing)
Please reply.....
Thanks
Amit

nps = no problems
look in rom development section, see threads with[ROM] in it, see pictures and whats included in the roms it self.
personally if you want standard use a sense rom
Options are

Try not to add in a thread into your post. It takes up so much space and isn't required. Answer to your question is yes of course u can root without s-off. Its called unlocking your bootloader. Then add recoveery then root. Its easy. Please follow my guide in other threads to do this.

HTC Salsa Memory
Hi Big Bear, primarily thank you for all your posts and info which I found really helpful.
My Phone:HTC Salsa
HBOOT-1.07.0000
My problem is:
I used XTC Clip to S-OFF my HTC Salsa, and rooted it. My main aim is to increase its internal memory. So I followed the thread step by step. After rooting the phone (downloaded "root.zip"), I did the 3 wipes and installed CWM 5.0.2.6. Booted phone and all was fine. I did the 3 wipes again, booted the phone and allowed the ROM to fully boot. Then I entered into the HBOOT --> Recovery --> Install zip from SD Card --> installed "htc-data2sd-ext3.zip" and rebooted phone. I used 16gb Class 10 micro (Partitioned using Minitool to ext3 using just 800mb and the rest FAT32, first partition FAT32 and the second partition ext3 both as Primary). I was really happy with the result as when I booted my SD showed 800mb of free space.
I started to download my favourite applications and all was fine. I then switched off phone, placed the SIM and switched back on. Phone reception was very low too, just one or two bars but otherwise all was fine for about an hour until it started to give me several errors of Force Closing. SMSs won't arrive as when I clicked messages, it Force Closes, the same happened with the GMAIL application. I restored the phone to my back up and I did the process all again for about 6 times even using different SD cards but the result was always the same.
So now I restored again, using CWM 5026, created ext3 partition again and downloaded Link2SD. This however is making almost no difference and my internal memory left is now only about 40mb. Phone is working fine, Full Mobile Network Reception, messages work fine too but I did not solve the memory problem.
Am I missing something? Any help from you is greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you when you have time.
Thank you so much once again.
Cheers,

Hey @BigBearEvo
I intend to root my friends HTC Salsa and I think yours is the best method out there. The rest kinda confuse me. However, the links dont seem to work. I am unable to download anything.
I understand that your post is old and there could be some updates as of today. Do you know of any better method or how to go about?
All my friend wants to do is get some more internal memory.
Thanks
