Dear Canadians: Introducing EmWeather - myTouch 3G, Magic Apps and Games

Dear Canadian htc magic/sapphire/android users (and our international friends that visit Canada),
I just put up the beta version of EmWeather, my new weather application. It is very functional and looks nice. Most other weather apps do not provide this extended information or just have hooks to open weather underground websites (ie. slow and annoying). On top of that, most apps pull from Weather.com which, for Canada anyway, is next to useless.
Environment Canada provides excellent, surprisingly accurate, and very detailed forecasts for the whole country. This app aims to make this information easily available.
Features:
- Free, open-source
- Pulls data feeds from Environment Canada
- Shows current details and 8 extend forecasts on the main screen
- Easy access to detailed forecast information
- Ability to choose any city in canada, no need to do an independent search for obscure city codes.
- Wonderful GUI look
Coming in the next release:
- Alternative icon packs
- French language
Enjoy!

0.9.1 update
Just a quick note that there was a small bug in the application that showed every day as being the "evening" that snuck in at the last second. It is fixed in the 0.9.1 update.

Well, it's a good start. Only problem is, I've been spoiled by other weather applications. So, here's the things that have me using Snowstorm instead:
- Widget
- Auto-update the city based on the phone's current location (aka, automatically picks the city)
Okay, so it's just two things. Great work otherwise though, I'll definitely be keeping an eye up for this app in the future.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been thinking about adding multiple city support for travellers, also the ability to choose a couple of "favourite" cities for commuters.
I have a question about the widget: what would you like a widget to show? A widget that shows the current weather is pretty useless normally (if it's raining, it's raining, if it's sunny, it's sunny). Should it show the current weather and the weather forecast for the evening? Current/Tomorrow? Current/evening/tomorrow?
Thanks for the feedback,
Emilie

Hello, I've downloaded and took at look at your app, and I have a few suggestions for improvement. If you'd like to hear me out.
Like Spaceboy said include that and my suggestions:
- Widget (Take a look at "beautiful widgets" weather widget, or the Hero's Weather Widget, where it has a nice animation for clouds/sun/rain/temperature)
- Also can you add a Celsius/Fahrenheit switch
- If you look at weatherbug, it allows you to put the temperature into the taskbar at the top of the android, just a simple 26°
- Also from weatherbug if you were to pull the application bar down it would give more detail on the weather in a simple row.
- Auto-update the city based on the phone's current location

Huh, guessed I should've specified what should be in the widget eh?
From what I want and from what I see in other apps, here's what a good widget needs.
- minimal battery usage
- does not slow down the phone
- able to choose update rate (every 15 min, 30 min, hour, etc)
- updates your location automatically based on network location
- either displays the current weather in a 1x1 widget (useful to people work indoors) or the expected weather for the day (good for mornings)
- for multiple size widgets, displays the short-term forecast (weather for the morning/afternoon/evening/night for today day and tomorrow) or the long-term forecast (daily weather for the next few days)
- clicking the widget should open detailed view, (or your app to the right screen)
- some people like different skins, I'll settle for the ability to change font colour
That's about it off the top of my head. Hope it helps.

if you dont mind me asking... where does the Em come from?

Thanks again for the feedback. I am excited people are using the app! I do all the time and I love it.
I added the features you all have mentioned and the ones I am thinking about to the Issues tracker on the homepage. Please feel free to add others or comment on these ones.
I am a little swamped with school and work right now but I wanted to make sure I articulated all the features and bugs so that I can add one of them now and then when I have a few hours to spare.
Thanks!
ps. Em comes from the EM-pathy I feel for all those poor suckers reading weather feeds from weather.com and getting rained on when the forecast says sunny! Just kidding, it's from my name

I don't suppose you plan on posting up the sources? =D
I'll add what I can to the issues. Have fun with classes.

Actually, the (gpl3) source is available on the project page (use SVN).
For some reason, the last update (0.9.2) didn't seem to commit all the changes properly but the sources should be at least 0.9.1.

Hey, I appreciate your work on the app. My only issue is that the most important information to me is the 'feels like' temperature, which only seems to be tracked by the Weather Channel. I don't care what the 'real' temperature is, I care what it feels like. So I guess I'm stuck with the 'Weather Channel' app for the time being. It sucks, because I really like the layout of your app - it's just that you draw your weather information from Environment Canada, which doesn't track 'feels like'.

Finally
It's about time someone decided to use the Weather Office for Canadian weather information.
Currently I just had a browser shortcut on my desktop to my local city weather. This app has the same information I want formatted for my screen.
Thank you!
Suggestion - I like the familiar look and feel of the weatheroffice.gc.ca website. Current weather as the top strip with extra information (wind chill, tendency, ect..) Then just basic weather boxes with the POP info.
Personally I don't care for fancy graphics and eye candy. I just want the information in an easily readable format.

WeatherEye
Try Weathereye. Feeds from www.theweathernetwork.com Just as the TV channel.

widgets and customization
EmWeather now includes widgets and basic theming options!

Hi, I'm glad you like the app. Environment Canada does provide an index that it calls "comfort". For example, on a day that is 18 degrees but feels a little chilly out, environment canada will say "comfort: cool". It is very accurate and it is already included in EmWeather.
I find that the weather channel feeds are basically useless for Canada, or at least for Montreal, certainly for forecast info but also for current conditions. For example, if it's rainy and cold outside and the weather channel says "mostly cloudy and feels like 17c", it's totally useless information
In the future, probably in the next 6 months, I am hoping to be able to add some other weather feed sources. If I can included the weatherchannel feeds, it will include this information.

Google Reader Widget Pro

I have just uploaded the Pro version of my Reader Widget to the Market. Features not in the free version:
-Small, medium and large sizes
-Large shows headlines on five second intervals
-Choose tag, site and time text
-Add more than 1 widget and configure them independently
-Tap for list of tag and feed unread counts; Greed, refresh and settings buttons
-For Greed (full) v1.1.9 users, option to tap on feed name to view in Greed
-Manual refresh (instead of refreshing periodically).
Search for "reader widget" in the Market and it should come up.
For more see the info page on my site.
Feedback welcome.

Great update! I requested some of these features a while back. Unfortunately, I am going to have to refund, but I want to share why: I am using google apps to host my domain's email and stuff. So the google account associated with my phone is not a @gmail.com account at all. It's my domain. Android seamlessly allows this, and it's great. Some of the apps in Android that traditionally reqire a @gmail account, such as YouTube and market simply ask you for your @gmail credentials when you sign on the first time. Unfortunately, there is no reader account support with google apps hosted domains, so reader requires my @gmail.com account. If your app would allow me to specify my gmail address, it would work, and be exactly what I have wanted since day 1 of getting the phone. I'll keep an eye out and hope this was helpful, in case you didn't know about this feature and the need/way to implement support for it.
Thanks,
Ricky Turner
good feed widgets, but the large version force closes.

Yes, I've had a couple of emails about this. I will issue an update soon that should fix it.

I have uploaded version 1.1 to the market. It should fix that issue.
Also new in 1.1 is tighter integration with Greed. If you have the full version of Greed installed, on the second configuration screen you have the option to choose what happens when you tap on a feed. If you select the Greed option then you can view a feed in it just by tapping on the feed name in the pop-up list. If you don't have Greed (full) then I highly recommend it. Its a very nice Google Reader client with handy syncing for offline reading.

That would be awesome. In fact, I think I'll just keep it installed so it'll be easier to keep an eye out for updates (even though it's not useful at the moment in my situation).
Thanks!

What is keeping me from using is that it takes forever to refresh. In fact at the beginning it didn't refresh at all. It seems to be working now although I am gonna wait till more features are added. There is one feature in particular that I would like implemented. If you are familier with Honchengs RSS widgets, whenever you tap the widget a window opens up and you can scroll down through the articles and see summarys. That feature alone would make this widget perfect. Thank you for your consideration.

Are you using the large widget? That will take longer to refresh than the others as its downloading more from the Google Reader API. One thing that is slowing it down is https. I could add an option to use http only but it would obviously be less secure. The free version used http at first and it was definitely faster then.
As for adding headlines to the pop-up list, I looking into it but I don't think its possible to have more then two levels in an expandable list using the standard Android ExpandableListView. It could pop-up a second list of headlines I spose or have the large widget show a giant list of all the headlines. What do you think?
Screenshots? Also, any chance of different color schemes? I have a very defined color scheme on my phone, and if I can't get a color to match I just won't put it on the screen. Kinda hard with a widget, where a normal app I can just keep it in the drawer.

Just tried the Honcheng BBC News widget. Very nice. I think the large widget could load up a list like that when clicking on the headline. I'll add it to my (ever growing) to do list.

It's good to get immediate feedback and ideas from the forums and market. It's very different to the dev I do in my day job!

I'll add the headline list in an update this week as well as some more minor changes. I might put in an option to limit the number of headlines downloaded for speedier updates too. After that I'll get started on the manual login option.
V1.2 is up on the market. Here's the changelog:
-Headline list pops-up when tapping the headline section of the large widget. Tapping on a headline in the list spawns a browser window for that story.
-Both last refresh and unread item times shown on medium and large widgets. This means people won't have to choose between them on these widgets.
-Slightly enlarged tag list button on large widget to make it easier to tap on.
-"People you follow" tag now in list.
I uploaded version 1.3 to the market. It contains a small bug fix whereby the headline list would sometimes force close on launch.
Nice update although my widget is always stuck at loading. It never quite refreshes or pulls the articles.

Just to add, scales right up to smallest the OS produce are available... i.e. to individual building level.
Nice.
Well, that didn't take long. Received an email from Ordnance Survey today, negotiations begin... at least they haven't run to Google or blocked my API key yet, though... ;-)
i have noticed there is no map key ?
ie whot is a rd how is a footpath marked etc
i know alot of it is straight foward but not every body is switched on to start off with ..
it could do with a button in with the settings that opens up a window with a list of whot is on the map .. like you get at the top of a papper os map
also i found that if you leave the app to look at an email then go back to it it had to reload , wich is a right pain if your running 2g and roaming ...
oooo and can you over ride the lock time too mine is set for a 1 min and keeps turning the map off when im looking at it .....
apart from that well pleased have now used it for the last 5 days nearly non stop while walking along the coast of devon ... apart from a few comection issues its been top notch
hairybum (some of the professionalism from this reply has gone already because I can't stop sniggering...)
Reloading after leaving the app:
I can add an option to the app to tell it to keep awake when the phone is turned off or the map window moves to the background. Obviously, this will have a negative impact on battery life but it might be possible to minimise this by having it only check for position updates every minute or so while the screen is off.
Map key
There is a PDF key on the OS website, which I will add a link to. I'll need to check with them whether or not I can distribute this with the app.
Lock / Screen Off Time
Will add an option to override this too, since it's one of the things that's annoying me about the app.
Feedback always appreciated!
I'm really impressed with OS Maps, David. It's incredibly polished for an app still (time-wise) in its infancy. Thanks and congratulations.
Btw, your instructions for setting up a custom URL were excellent. I'm using my own API key, tell the OS.
Al
Cheers Al! Would be eternally grateful if you get the chance to rate the app on Android Market and add a comment.
Kind regards,
Dave.
was thinking more of a pop up window for the map key if poss rather than a link , would make checking that your doing things right quicker rather then wating for the browser to load ............. a bit like the one for my location simple to get too .....
ooo and sorry about the snigger but user names seem too get harder to come buy espically on a large site like this
Just take a copy of an OS map with you until you remember what the essentials are. They are not that hard to remember and most are pretty self explanatory TBH.

Sorry I thought the idea was not to have to take a map with me ?
Or to have to buy a map at all ?
Just buy this app far cheaper
It is of course
I'm say use one to learn the key and then stop using it.
Essentially there are not that many things you really need to remember and most are pretty self explanatory.
This is probably obvious, but please don't rely on any electronic map as your sole navigation aid, in circumstances when you are really relying on it, if you see what I mean... in those circs, you need a backup that can't fail (and know how to use it).
lecture over
Oh yeah !
First if all a big thanks for this amazing app. I just wanted to enquire whether you believe that the speed of finger scrolling can be increased or not. It's a little painful at the moment in my opinion.
Hi Mansn,
At the moment, I don't believe that it can. The program is capturing touch events, converting them to mouse movements, and passing them to the Javascript to move the map. I think the speed is poor due to the limited brain power of the Hero when it comes to Javascript.
On the bright side, it's something that should improve as Google make changes to their WebKit engine to speed up the Javascript side of things.
I could also map the trackball to move the map around - this would be smoother, I think, but not quite as easy to use.
Cheers,
Dave.
im confused
wot is now free ? that wasnt free before
The whole app is free. It used to be £4.99.
Nice! But why?
Ordnance Survey disagreed with my interpretation of some of the clauses in their developer agreement. Rather than jeopardise the access of anyone who'd bought the map, I decided to make it free.
The alternative would have been to pull it completely.

Damn I'm digging that. I'm wondering if it just needs a language pack. Gonna talk to some people and see if they can help. Does this work with adw launcher? What site did you get this off of?
Hmmn...installing an unknown Chinese widget from a non-Market source doesn't seem like a super idea to me...Check the permissions closely. Better yet, try Fancy Widget.
I'm testing this now, it looks cool.
Permissions are:
- Network Communication:
Full Internet Access
- Phone Calls:
Read State & Identity
From the way it looks, it *LOOKS* like in addition to a widget, it is also a desktop replacement.
Though, its COMPLETELY unusable because its entirely in Chinese, no English option whatsoever.

looks a lot like Beautiful Widgets.
links dont work for me
I just installed thsi and it's a awesome weather app..
And when you touch the weather icon another 4 screens come up!
But it's not in english Is there any chance of one of our chinese friends converting it?
english translate would be really nice. For now, I will stick with fancy widget.
There is an app in the market that does contain the clock / widget basically like that but in English.
When I took my phone to T-Mobile the customer guy even asked how did I get the HTC clock there.
It's named Weather & Toggle Widget. I didn't mind paying $.99 to have a nice clock / weather whatsoever.
Weather Widgets (com.androidapps.widget.weather2) with the proper skins make for an identical Sense weather/flip-clock.. on the surface anyway. And it's a paid app now. $2.

How's that working for you? I tried it and it looks good, but the clock would freeze and stop updating (no, I was not killing the task). For now I'm using Beautiful Widgets which works great, but I'd like the HTC look that Fancy has.
Nice little widget
Kinda wish they had an english version. Looks good and smooth but I just can understand it

For example, one weather query takes near the 15K data.
Traffic for city search query may be vary, but no more than 1K in the most cases.
When you tap on the "Details" link on the "5 Days" page program creates temporary page named "AccuWeather"
and shows detailed weather info from the Accuweather site for mobile devices.
In this case program works as web browser.
If you like this app and think others might find this application useful,
sharing your experience in a short review on the WP7 Marketplace would be highly appreciated.
It is very easy with the "Weather4Me WP7". Just tap "Review" button on the "About application" page.
What's new in the 2.3 version
* Some usability improvement and minor bugs fixed
* Live Tile service several upgrades since the version 2.2
* Fixed Live Tile generation bug for Australia and Canada
* Improved Live Tile support for most European countries

FAQ (based on the users reviews on the WP7 Marketplace)
Q. Program shows me weather info in the wrong units. How to fix this?
A. Application selects units automatically according to your Regional Formats settings.
Just tap on device "Start" button, go to the programs and start "Settings".
On the "system" page tap on the "region & language" item.
On the "region & language" page you should select "Region format" properly.
After that WP7 will prompt you to restart system to apply new settings.
(Also you can see these actions on the demo video, link below)
Q. On the "5 Days" page program shows me date without days name. I want to see them. How to change date format on that page?
A. "Weather4Me WP7" is using Long Date format specified in your system settings for date display on the "5 Days" page.
Since the version 2.2 application always shows days of week for all regions/countries.

I don't understand.. Why not live tiles?

Good question and simple answer below
Because for Live Tiles "push notification" should be used.
Currently it is slow and non reliable in most cases and does not meet my requirements for this technique.
Here very good article about "push notification" and its problems.
Especially very interesting comments from the developers.
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_phone/b/wpdev/archive/2011/02/17/push-notification-status.aspx
Thanks for your feedback

Here the quote of that article (see link to it in my previous post):
"Since the configurations of mobile operator networks are all different, the delivery of Push Notifications may vary.
Microsoft works closely with our mobile operator partners to ensure consistent delivery where possible
but developers should test across multiple mobile operator networks when feasible.
By programming defensively around real world connection states, developers can gracefully degrade functionality in their applications.
As we move forward with future versions, we’ll work to make this easier and more reliable for developers."
So, when push notification becomes more reliable, live tiles will be implemented ASAP.
Works better then other apps!

An unreliable live tile is much better than no live tile. I really don't see the point in yet another weather app without a live tile when the major problem with current popular ones is that their tiles are butt ugly.

Does it means that false (or out of date) weather information provided by me on the live tile to my users much better than just static picture?
Program is very fast, just one tap and you can see actual info.
I'm not against this modern technique, which comes from other popular platform.
I'm watching for WP7 evolution very attentively.
Currently it looks like MS DOS for IBM PC AT (1987~1989) without real multitasking but with the great graphics shell.
And the push notifications looks like the interrupts implementation for that OS.

Thanks for your feedback.
Sorry, Live Tiles is not in my current development plan, there are some other primary goals.
Additionally for people who want this feature I must say following:
1. Live Tiles requires web service implementation.
2. This web service should be hosted on the Windows hosting.
3. Reliable (commercial) Windows hosting is more expensive than Linux hosting with the similar parameters (monthly traffic limit, disk space, etc.)
So, if you really want this feature you can vote for it on my site.
Yesterday, someone put the rating on this my forum thread 1 star. Probably he did not like my previous answer.
Nevertheless, the current position of the program in the WP7 Marketplace -> 38 of 714.
Thank you to all my users who really support me. Good luck to all!

[APP] StormGlass -[R]- {10/27/2011} -[U]- {10/27/2011} -[V]- 1.0.1

Name: StormGlass
Language: English (at the moment - I need translators!)
Required: Windows Phone 7.5 or higher
App will use:
Location services - When asked to use Geolocation
Data services - To fetch weather data
StormGlass is a customizable weather live tile application for WP7. You can use the "Tiles" page to populate upto 5 live weather tiles, each with it's own settings. Available weather skins can also be changed for a unique look. Enabling the "Quick refresh" mode for a live tile causes it to refresh weather information by just clicking on it without having to launch StormGlass.
If you've been looking for a free, good looking and dependable weather live tile application - you need look no further than StormGlass!
StormGlass is and will always be free with no ads or annoyances.
I am currently looking for people to help me with
Translations (into any language you can read/write fluently) - Email me and I will share documents via Google docs that you can edit.
Weather skins - Please submit any weather skins you would like to see in the app. (details at the end of the post)
Tile layout suggestions - I am welcome to ideas for more tile layouts - subject to the limitations of what weather information Google Weather provides.
Oh, and if you know of a free weather service that can provide dependable, hourly weather data - I am most interested in knowing.
Anyone who contributes in any way will be given due credit inside the application. Weather skin / layout authors please provide a name and/or email id (and optionally a title and message body). The shown name will be a clickable link that will allow the end user to compose an email message to you.

thanks. looking great.
i seem to be unable to keep celcius though. it can be set, but when i check the location its back to fahrenheit.
the tile is also having problems with german umlauts like Ö/ö
seems good, downloading
I will let you know my opinion...
thanks
Nice app - but as mentioned above it simply won't display in Celcius.
Otherwise, it's really exactly what I'm looking for, doesn't flood the user with bells and whistles and crap, just live tiles with their own settings, good stuff! :>
Celcius/Fahrenheit problem fixed
Thanks to comeone123 and shinygerbil for reporting the Fahrenheit/Celcius bug. A fix has been made and will show up as an update soon - with a few other goodies!

Thanks, I got the problem - I need to convert Google weather response from iso-8859-1 to UTF-8. I have a fix in place for the C/F problem and a globalization fix is coming, too.

Did it continue to do that when refreshed (manually or quick-refreshed)? That happens when the update was unsuccessful for some reason. Could you tell me what the weather condition text was at that time?

Yes it continued after both types of refresh.
The weather condition is light snow. I guess its because there isn't a png for light snow?

Yes, that's quite possibly it. One way to confirm it for sure is to check if the weather condition text has a "*" after it. If it does, it means the app couldn't translate it - it just displayed it as provided. A fix is in and will be in a future update.
Thanks!

You got it. Latest version (1.3) with "Realistic" skin added to bottom of OP. Enjoy! Don't forget to spread the word, rate and review.
Question.
What is the point of this when HUB does the same thing? I was just wondering since I have this installed right under HUB but just went into hub and when I refreshed the HUB it shows the weather.

If you're referring to the HTC hub, it is
a. A battery drainer
b. It cannot be customized or modified in any way
c. It cannot be refreshed with a quick click, a click launches the hub application
d. No forecast on the tile itself.
f. Not two-sided
Any maybe more ...
