Howdy, guys. First post here, hoping to lean on y'all for some help.
I'm new to the WM phone category, but have been using a mobile computer since the days of the HP200LX, then to a Philips Nino, Casio E100, HX4700 and now the TyTNII. My use is both personal and line-of-business as a highly mobile 'day trip' laptop replacement.
I already have a considerable investment in PPC software from WM5 (list below), but given this is going to be a constant travelling companion unlike my HX4700 which I'd leave behind often because of it's size, I'd like to replicate that utility on the new device.
Suffice to say I'm no stranger to PocketPC (or whatever MS is calling it these days), but I have a couple questions. Short and simple:
1) What's the difference between the TomTom 'Taster' version and the full version (V.6) shrinkwrap?
2) What usability software would you recommend? Looking for something to make the smaller screen easier to navigate. I currently own:
1-Calc (PPC and desktop)
Pocket Mechanic
Virtual Explorer
Ewallet
Flex Mail
Pocket Informant
ListPro (Pro)
SPB: (PocketPlus, Backup, Finance, Weather)
Calligrapher
PhatPad/PhatNotes
Tweaks2k2
NetFront
(Yes, they're all legitimate, purchased, licensed copies)
3) What ROM updates would you recommend? I've already flashed 6.1 off the HTC site, but find the machine hangs a bit from time to time. Though I tend to prefer my installs lean and mean, the utilities in the HTC unit are very nice, like the camera and wireless control panel to turn on and off the various radios.
Well, that's it for now. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

That's quite a list you got there.
For easier navigation you might want to try
1) Ultimate Launch
2) SPB Mobile Shell (i see you have the other SPB softwares..)
3) WisBar Advance
You will find some good therads in XDA on all the softwares mentioned above.
3) What ROM updates would you recommend?
Since you already have the latest official ROM, you might want check out the cooked ROMS here.
Here's link that gives you good info on most available ROMS for the Kaiser.

Also, be sure to read all about Hard SPL before you try flashing a cooked ROM

Thanks for the feedback. I confess as much as I like the idea of having a ROM with only what I want, it makes me a bit nervous. I've twaddled with re-flashing my RAZR in times past, and even used 'cooked' ROM versions on my HX4700, but neither of them were a $600+ phone. What is the risk on any of these procedures? Is it possible to brick the phone?

Only if you don't follow the instructions. Read, re-read and follow exactly and nothing should go wrong. There are some brilliant people (GSLEON3's are burning) on here who can help you if something untoward happens.
All of the information you could ever need is in the stickies and Wiki. If you get stuck with anything find the thread for it and ask.
There is even a process for Reverting back to the OEM SPL and ROM/Radio for a warranty return.

I used to have to get back to a computer to check email regularly - I did not realize how often this actually affected my day. With the TILT I no longer have THAT problem - I get emails and can respond to them easily and rapidly. I highly recommend the TILT for business people as it has definitely improved my ability to conduct business.
I recently went to a convention and needed internet access for a demonstration. The show (Seattle Convention Center) charges $800.00 for three days worth of internet access. I used internet sharing on my Tilt and at no charge did the demo. Priceless... (well - saved $800.00 right there)
Personally I have found that I do not need anything other than what is in my current ROM (see my signature) although I use TomTom for navigation when I go on client sites as I am directionally challenged and don't care for mapquest. I also use TRAVKME - nice program.
The TOMTOM taster version vs real version? The real version works - nuff said.
Can you brick your phone - come on guy - read some . You will see lots up here about people bricking their phone. I am a newbie myself and have now flashed three times with no problems - you will need to read a lot but it seems to work for lots of other people. Not reading enough will be your downfall.
Good luck,
Bill

Bill, no need to be condescending. I'm not lazy, just cautious. I have enough experience to know what I don't know, and to know that what I don't know can hurt me very much. There's been more than one buggy bootloader and cooked ROM in the history of Windows Mobile. Besides, there seems to be some controversy over HardSPL in terms of how it works. I'd like to hear some discussion on that.
I guess what it boils down to is figuring out what I do and don't want on the machine, and which ROM fits those needs. Because I have so much full-version 3rd party software, there's not much I really need in the ROM. For example, zip is handled by VirtualExplorer.
Still looking for a more crisp reply on the TomTom issue, though. I've read on another board (Extensis) that it's the same as the full version but limited to one small map. But I'd like to see that corroborated by at least one or two more people, or someone who has firsthand knowledge. The reason is simple economics. TomTom is charging $140 for the full version, but only $70 for a map. If I have the core application, that's a fairly attractive savings.
Thanks for the ideas. I'll poke around and see what works.
Tomtom taster only gives you one map, mostly just a city, the other version provides The entire country or more sometimes.

Sorry that you thought it was condescending... It was not meant to be. BUT - you asked if you can brick your phone and if you had read it would be OBVIOUS to you that you CAN brick your phone as there are many sad tales of those who did not read or had other issues.
There is NOT a lot of controversy on HARDSPL - please read the thread on that - you will find that a lot more is known about it now and there appears to be resolution - you need to know which HARDSPL to load for which ROM you are loading and you will be all set.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922
The ROM choice is yours and you will have to play/read and try until you are happy. Opinions on ROMs will certainly vary. YOUR opinion will be the only one that you value.
The TEST VERSION will NOT work with full maps - you will need to purchase a full version if you want a TOMTOM that actually works. Not sure how to say that more clearly - if TOMTOM was stupid enough to give you a test version that worked the same as the full version why would ANYONE purchase the full version?
YES - there are HACKS out there that will allow you to circumvent their scheme to make you pay them money - but that is stealing and you would not do that would you? (One of your other posts I think made a great show of how all the software you had was legal and purchased - you would not want to start down a different road now would you?)

Ok, but is the core code and feature set the same? Is the "tasting" referring only the map size? IOW, if I were to buy the full US map, does Taster+ENTIREUSMAP=TT6? Or would I be missing something?

No harm done. Just didn't sound quite right at first read.
I guess I just didn't get far enough along in that thread yet. There are more than just a few posts.
I think you may be mistaken on the TomTom issue. It's a 'tAster', not 'tEster' version. I think what they've done is to give the core program but charge for the map only. I'm on hold with TomTom as I type this and will get back to you guys once I have an answer from them, or if I don't get a clear answer from them, I'll contact HTC directly.
At the end of the day, I'm in a 'holding pattern' of sorts. I don't want to invest a huge amount of time installing and configuring software for the current ROM implementation only to have to do it all over again with a redacted version.

Taster tester...toMAYto toMAto - Quite sure that I am NOT wrong and that you will want to get the NAV6 full version. but - no worries. I think that you will also find (as others have) that TOMTOM tech support and HTC support on this issue are as useful as a third navel (the first navel was useless...) If you can purchase the full maps and have them work with the TASTER version - not sure about that - but you are going to pay for the full version of the maps the same as if you purchased the full version of the software including the maps - I think anyway.
From what I have seen the AT&T stock ROM was pretty good - I actually liked it. I upgraded to the DEATH ROM because it was AT&T based and looked like it had some improvements that I thought I would like - version 4 I upgraded to last evening.
Personally - (I have not run any of Dutty's or other ROMs) the DEATH ROM rocks.
1. fast
2. stable
3. hesitations gone
4. fast switching
5. radio clear and flawless
6. bluetooth works a treat on three different sets that I use regularly
7. fast connection on GPS
8. using the 3.5 dialer (the version 4 dialer is sad in my opinion as I like large buttons) the phone is awesome
9. email works a treat
The only "bug" I have at the moment is the crazy screen going off on me when I am on a phone call - and the chef is looking at that.
My recommendation -
1. upgarde your current ROM to DEATH 4.1 and
2. purchase full version of NAV6 from TOMTOM.
Pretty sure you will be happy camper.
Bill
I am using the TomTom 'taster' version supplied with my Kaiser quite happily with a full version of UK & Ireland map with no problems

Wow. You're not kidding about support. On the phone now with a guy at HTC and he was insisting that GPS was a service provided by my carrier and became rather belligerent when I suggested he was mistaken. What an idjit. I disabused him of his notion and we're still delving into this. I asked him to please confer with one of his colleagues. Stay tuned. This is getting more interesting.

Well I didn't program it so I can't say if the core programing is the same but from what I've seen it's just the fact that you don't have all the maps.

Bill (and everyone), I have an update on the TomTom issue and some followup questions.
After speaking with both TomTom and HTC, it seems I was right, "Taster"+USMAP=TT6. Yes, you get some utilities like PC based map loaders and managers on disc if you buy the shrinkwrap version, but they're also downloadable from TomTom directly. The program itself really is TT6, and I verified as much because I've seen and used TT6 on my HX4700 previously.
Now, on to ROM upgrades.
I read the thread on SPL and ROMs. My hair huts. First, permit me to clarify a base assumption that may be incorrect. Bear with me, because I'm thinking out loud here.
My understanding of the primary purpose of 'cooked' ROMs is that they're an opportunity to have redacted software set, meaning that a smaller ROM = smaller RAM footprint, leaving more space for storage and operating memory which should conceivably enhance performance. Another benefit is having patches or driver updates loaded on the unit that are better than the OEM version.
I guess the things that I could do without are these below, but I'd welcome discussion on the relative merits of each:
- Getting Started (A bit late for this now!)
- SMS Service (Wouldn't FlexMail do just as well?)
- Windows Live (Do you really need this?)
- Voice Speed Dial (MS Voice Command instead?)
- File Explorer & Zip (Both these are handled by Virtual Explorer)
- Windows Update (If it worked, would we be here?)
Because I have so much already invested in PPC software, I tend to think that I'm better off with a very minimalistic ROM version and install what I want. Or am I misunderstanding the concept in thinking that a smaller ROM will return greater storage/runspace for programs?
I guess what I'm getting at, is that if the above things that I'd remove don't consume any appreciable space, then can I not achieve better perfornamce with only an upgraded SPL?
Help a dumb ol' boy out, here.
<scratching head>
Thanks!

Yes, because the 'taster' version is free, bundled with the phone. It's a common marketing strategy.
I'm sure you've seen it before with other software. Take the case of current PPC software - you get the trial version of 'x' backup program that limits you to 'y' meg of backup, but if you want the full version, just pay and get the registration code to unlock it. The code is the same, there's just a flag that limits it. In this case the limitation on function is simply the size of the map. With TomTom it's the MAP that's protected and requires an unlock code, not so much the program itself.
As I said, I've confirmed by installing the 'taster' version and using a sample map. Having used TomTom 6 on my HX4700 extensively I can tell you that there is nothing missing in this version here at all, except the size of the map. To obtain other maps, it looks like all one has to do is to (pay for and) download the map you need.

I use this prg for couple of years now. It is complicated but when you make all adjustments to mach your needs is very stable and it can give all the information you ever need almost at the medical level. I have even a HRM band and a arm band for htc hd and is amassing. I didn`t find anything like it anywhere. It is very expensive but is wort all the money if you train regulately. I highly recommend this prg (I don`t work for them an I don`t have any commercial interest connected by them). the only thing what i don't like to that program is graphics, it is made for qvga screens and even if is working fine in WVGA it is ugly.
What he said. Pretty ugly, but excellent performance. I haven't found any other app to match it, or even to come anywgere close.
theres also so sporty pal
I tryed sportpal, but i find it kind of dif to understand the program :S
Just to add to the list of programs, even if it's not aimed at runners, it could be well used to keep track of your movements, it's a program called NoniGPSPlot.

Update to version 2.0:
The new version (will hit the marketplace in a few days) supports live tile notifications for observed products and will notify you over the psa icon on your homescreen about new offers for watched products.
I've been trying this app since your first version as it was something I was looking forward to having. It has, since then made leaps and bounds and works very well. I've just updated to the latest version, but the video mode isn't there? When will you be updating the marketplace version?
Thanks, James.

Hello James,
the version with live scanning from the video will be ready tomorrow (I've included the possibility to activate the flashlight to scan under bad light conditions and have tweeked my barcode detection algorythm a little bit).
but... using the camera api is not "legal", so I dont't know if this version will pass the marketplace certification. If it will not I, will upload this version in the moment MS takes down the restictitions on the camera api.
This is a nice work with live scan.
Is it possible to include the QR barcode scan? If it does, it will be amazing.
Thanks

At the moment QR-codes are not planned to implement, becaus "Personal Shopping Assist" was designed to optimize your real world shopping experience. And EAN/UPC-barcodes are the world wide most used barcode types for product ids. And every new barcode type makes the scanning a little bit slower.
Are QR codes used for product id's? if yes can you make an example?
Thanks for your help

Better than Newsr? How does it compare?
I quite like the look of this, but I'm really loathe to buy a Reader app when it's only a matter of time until Google themselves release one that's optimized for tablets. I haven't bought Newsr for the same reason.
If you release an ad supported version then I'd jump all over it.
We just released version 1.1 with integrated credentials support - enjoy!

I quite like the look of this, but I'm really loathe to buy a Reader app when it's only a matter of time until Google themselves release one that's optimized for tablets. I haven't bought Newsr for the same reason.
If you release an ad supported version then I'd jump all over it.

Maybe we will release an ad version. But we would rather not bloat the interface with ads. I dont think google will release a good reader app for tablets, the browser one is no good and the one for phones isnt really great either in my opinion. Thats why we thought of doing one that looks the way we want for our selves..
How do things get marked as read? When you scroll down or? That's crucial for me. And when you mark them as read do they go away?

As it works now, the news wont get marked as read. When you sync it purges the news and downloads new news. So you can decide, tell us how you want it and we will make it work like that.
Newsr is a small investment and very good. Actively developed. Even if Google releases its own Reader app that you prefer, you will have gotten your money's worth. What I really want is a scrollable Reader widget which allows me to select which feed or label I want in the widget.
I like the look of this Honey Reader. When it sorts out the login Account Manager issue, I'll give it a whirl. Price is fair, too. I think people forget they can still do 15 minute try and return for no cost if they want. It's important that we support a development community for Droid if we want it to become as robust as Apple's.
Edit: just realized the account manager issue is resolved. Off to try this now.

Enjoy, I will try to fix the widget for you
png6: Great looking app, especially after you've taken care of the login issue. If you create a free ad-sponsored version, I will write about it on the XDA main page.
(Just toss me a PM if you decide to do that, please.)
Tried it. Great potential. 100 max items is not usable for me. I have wayyyyy too many labels.
I’m proud to present the new version of my weather statistics app for windows phone 7 – “Weather Stats”. Even though I had a terrible experience publishing it (for some inexplicable reason this innocent weather app got banned from China marketplace for “political reasons” and by inexplicable I literally mean inexplicable, i.e. both certification and policy team failed to give me any explanation for that failure even after a month wasted on support tickets), I’m still proud to present this new version, just released today. Many people here helped me make this app what it is now. If you had a beta version installed – it is time to uninstall it, head to marketplace and install the real final version (1.1). If you had version 1.0 installed, you will hopefully get update notification real soon. If you have not tried “Weather Stats” before – why not try it now? It is absolutely free and contains no ads!
Weather Stats is a unique app that shows weather averages across more than 26800 locations around the globe! A lot of valuable information is available for each such location. Position on the map, Wikipedia link, high and low temperatures, precipitation and now, only in this newly released update – local time, time zone, sunrise/sunset and even a length of day chart for the year! If you ever wonder about the climatological statistics for your current location or just want to know what is the best time of year to visit the city of Arctic Bay (Nunavut, Canada) - this app is for you. And honestly who doesn’t wonder about when is the best time to visit the city of Arctic Bay? Well, now you can be sure. It is terribly cold there. And it is terribly dark during winter there too.
There are other nifty features that, I hope, would be appreciated by some of you. GPS integration, quick search, offline SQL CE database and app connect integration. There is even a map with Voronoi tessellations used to interactively show the closest weather stations to your location and areas where their data would be most accurate. As always, I will appreciate if you download the app and leave some marketplace comments for it. So please head over to:
http://windowsphone.com/s?appid=00918e7e-6b8b-4976-8782-5760ced74cc4
and grab “Weather Stats” while it is hot. Or cold. It really depends on what the weather is like.
As for weather stats, I strongly recommend you to take a look to the latest WeatherLive app (it's my favorite weather app at all). In latest version author added very useful weather statistics. Comparing with yours "average" this app can tell me exact information what I'm looking for: historical min and max temperatures comparing with the current, so I can tell, for example, today was a hottest March day in Boston for (nn - this is missing) years.

Thank you, just checked it out, "WeatherLive" is indeed quite cool, I'm not in the same league with it. But my app is free and premise is a quite a bit different too

No, as I said before, I'm not complaining and not criticizing your app. But you may reflect WeatherLive app or capture http requests to see how WeatherLive got statistical data and use the same data source (if it's free of course)

Yeah, I checked that out too! "WeatherLive" is using API from "weather underground". They actually do have a program for non-commercial developers but terms are not disclosed. I might try and contact them and see what they say for my case.
Commercial apps build using their API cost developers from 520 to 5750 USD per month, depending on your number of users.
