Wireless - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope this is the right section and that this isn't supposed to be in the apps section but it is a question that I'm asking so this seemed like a safe bet.
I know that there is an app out there that will let me use my phone as internet by tethering. But, I have to have my phone connected to my computer. Are there any apps out there where I can use the wireless on my laptop or ipod touch to connect to the internet without my phone having to be connected to them with a cord. because I can't connect my ipod touch to my phone to use internet and it would be nice to be able to leave my phone in like my pocket and just surf the internet with no cords. Does this exist yet?
Thanks for your time reading this!

Don't have an ipod so can't tell you there, but once you start tethering on your phone it will send out the wireless signal then from there you would select the wirless connection on your pc. I would think it would be the same concept on your ipod.

Connecting to a PSP

I've been reading some threads on turning the Kaiser into a wireless router, and was wondering if anyone had succesfully connected a Sony PSP to it? What am trying to do is use the Remote Play and Location Free features.
ever figure out how to get this done?
I have same setup as you as far as hardware.. for software i am using duttys 6.1 RTM on the kaiser and CFW 3.71 on the psp slim.
Lemme know...
Thanks,
J

The obvious question is why? It (PSP) connects wirelessly to your home network. 3G is fast but is it fast enough for on line gaming?
Remote play mostly just accesses content from your PS3 , pictures, music, not games , thru the internet.

1.Having the cell phone (3g HSDPA UMTS EDGE, GPRS in my case) would enable my psp to have an internet connection while mobile in the car. That is the biggest reason.
2.I already use WMWifiRouter to enable my passengers to use wifi on their notebooks while travelling. I would like to stream movies(very doable over 3g) to my psp so my son can watch them on the go.
3. I have a modded psp running CFW and I can do much more than play games on it. Many of the modded features are network reliant or network ready such as VNC, Streaming video from the PSP, youtube, watching Live tv, and of course accessing my media server through my ps3 at home. All on a much bigger screen than my kaiser.
4.Youtube, browsing internet(even with opera), screen size, OS performance still sucks on the kaiser, the graphics still suck(pending the new rom from htc).
5. Cause I just want it.

but as youll see on there i already posted There is one user who says he got it to work but i highly doubt he was connected to the phone or could even see it during a scan especially if he "didnt set anything up" and "it just worked" mods feel free to merge the threads. This has to be possible. Of course this is coming from somebody who doesnt know how to cook in the winmo world or the psp cfw world. I wish i could give a little less conversation with allot more action but i dont even know where to start learning how to cook.

I have never used WMWifiRouter although it was always my understanding that does exactly what you are asking (make a WAP for access from any device). And indeed you are doing that, so I can only surmise there is something weird with how the PSP accesses it? I know i would have issues with my PSP when trying to connect to a hidden (non broadcast) SSID.
Anyway, it looks like WMWifiRouter had gone commercial..maybe it is updated to work better? You can download a trial and see, and possibly email for support. Tell them you want to buy it if it will work with PSP. I really don't know how it can advertise it is working as a WAP if a device can't connect to it. Assuming the devices all use the same 802.11 standard and support the same encryption protocols. Otherwise, his software isn't really doing what it says... but again I haven't really investigated it.
wmwifirouter creates an on-demand wireless connection, which is quite different from a wireless access point. When you use another laptop to connect through your kaiser's 3G via wmwifi, it's basically like an adhoc wireless connection. The psp doensn't support adhoc wifi for internet,(only for psp-psp communication) or on-demand wifi.
What you could try is using your laptop to connect to wmwifirouter and then using softAP to turn your laptop into a wireless access point and THEN use your psp to connect to your laptop. Then again its way to complicated to be viable, so just forget it

Right I just downloaded and played with the trial and see what you mean. I think your workaround using ICS on the laptop will definitely work, and you might be able to automate thes setup with some netsh commands...but it would definitely take 5-10 mins to set up manually.
Other than that research the CF on the PSP to see if anyone figured a way to connect ad-hoc... I haven't been on the PSP scene for about 6 months, so I don't know what is new.

[Req] USB mouse

My Asus 1000HA's left click button has really gotten un responsive and it's a pain in the ass. [I turned on the mouspad click but that get's in the way, anyway] and since my g1 is always charging on it I figure why not make a usb mouse app?
My g1 is rooted with multi touch and it would be a very simple UI.
Right click, left click squares. then trackball or multi touch to scroll up or down. Figure that there would have to be software installed on my Notebook though, anyone think they could devolop this?
I know Gmote is similar but the fact it has to be on wifi really isn't very pratical for the g1's battery life.
How about using Gmote while the phones plugged in ? Seriously though, I'm sure it's possible as it's possible to tether, I see no reason it couldn't tether and send data. I doubt such an app currently exists, however.

Lol cause it takes a lot longer for the phone to charge while using wifi
And yea the g1's Sloth multi touch would be great to use for scrolling.

The point of the request is to turn my g1 into a mouse pad.
I don't need a mousepad to my wall.
And I don't use a wall mount charger anymore, I just charge my notebook from the wall and my g1 from my notebook which works out real well.

you can use AndRemote, or PhoneMyPC, both work perfectly. I use PhoneMyPC personally so my G1 acts as a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Reverse wired tethering?

I know that we can do wired and wireless tethering using our phone as the modem/gateway. Im wondering if reversed wired tethering is possible?
I.E. i want to hook my phone up to a computer via usb, and share my computers inet connection with my phone.
possible?
Doubt it, get a wireless router instead.
i have a wireless router at home, but im looking for something like this for while im at school. my uni has very strict wireless security that doesnt allow any mobile devices (phones, psp ect) on the network.
Even then if you could, you would need to install adb which I doubt you would be have admin access to do so.

is there a work around "ad-hoc" network for PS3

hi all,
I have Hero CDMA; rooted with aospMod Froyo. I am using Wireless Tether for Root users.
I have a PS3.
I can not connect my PS3 to the phone wifi tether, because it is an .. ad-hoc network.
I have heard there was a fix .. a work around ...
is there??
can anyone point me in the right direction?
This is something I would like to know, as well. I'm quite sure that you wouldn't be able to play well on it, but it would be useful for downloading system updates and maybe the odd game from the store.

Hmm.... I wan't aware there was a fix
have you tried barnacle wifi tether It works where wifi tether doesn't. But I don't have a ps3 to test it on. also here's a lenthy video on how to do it using your pc. The guys a little slow but gets it done

Haven't felt the need to test this yet, but, if your phone is rooted, why not
use the Wireless tether app? Turns the phone into a wireless router, the PS3
should be able to connect to it as if it were a conventional router. no need
for any ad-hoc workarounds or bridged connections.

Pretty sure this is the only way known so far.
A slightly more indepth look at how to do it:
Connect your computer to your phones adhoc network, enable internet sharing on your computer and then connect your computer and xbox/ps3 with the cat5.

[Q] Reverse tether

I have searched this topic but they all centered on Macs or got off topic or someone gave an answer that didnt even solve the solution. So i thought i would ask myself. Is there any way to share my LAPTOPs wifi TO my DROID3???
http://bit.ly/uGGo0Q
to the poster above; i dont like smarta**es. my post said i already searched so if you found something then post a link.
to everyone else i want something via usb or bluetooth. preferably usb. i have googled it and all the results are either hardware specific, need unbunto [i have windows 7] or dont have a solution. If you ever owned a zune [who has? lol besides a few of us] or a windows phone, they can do it from stock.

I have a bluetooth usb adapter on my laptop I am not sure how it does it but it allows me to get online with my droid 3 via the bluetooth link, I click on connect via access point and it works. Sometimes it works and sometimes the signal gets killed, but try connecting through a bluetooth usb adapter.
I know you said preferably over Bluetooth or USB but have you considered trying something like a virtual access point for your PC? It would require WIFI but you could run a software app on your PC that broadcasts as an access point that you could connect to from your phone.
You have a phone that is wifi capable, but you want to thether to your pc to use the wifi connection.
Oh and I hate smartasses too.

Ifnyou have windows 7 just install connectify
Google it (smartassingly probably just add a .com to that..)
It adds an AP virtual. That sjould not spend alot more of power as you have already wifi running.

If you laptop has Bluetooth (It should, I thought all Intel wifi chipsets in laptops were also Bluetooth) then what you want is a PAN "Personal Area Network". I thought the basic bluetooth stack in Windows supported this out of the box. (The Toshiba BT stack I used with Windows XP did, I don't know for sure about the MS BT stack in Windows 7 though).
Then you just turn on Internet Connection Sharing for you Wifi adapter to the Bluetooth PAN adapter.
Something like that anyway. I'm going from memory on the Windows side, and assuming the Droid 3 (etc.) supports PAN on its Bluetooth setup.
Doing it with USB though is trickier. On Windows 7, my ME863 appears as a network device with IP address, but I don't know if it'd work if I simply used ICS to share a link to the device because I don't know that the phone would be looking for a DHCP server. (It _is_ a DHCP server at this point)
Are you sure your not using the phones 3g or wifi. Did you try turnin on airplane mode and seeing if you still have internet

I just had a play, and I don't think my bluetooth solution is as easy as I'd hoped.
My Milestone 3 was able to join a PAN with my laptop and form their little adhoc network.
The best phone-side instructions I could find are at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666988 however a look around suggests that Windows 7 ICS won't let you share a network connection _to_ a BT network. I certainly couldn't see a way, although possibly it was because my phone is exporting a default gateway, rather than because of any inherent limitation of Windows.
It's a starting point, but not a particularly promising one. Whether ICS can be made to share Internet to the bluetooth PAN or not is really the only sticking point for "possible" versus "impossible" but a root-enabled App or possibly custom ROM would be needed on the phone to move from "possible" to "easy".
