VPN Configuration Help - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I've been trying to set up the VPN from my uni for a while, but I've never had any luck, so here I am. The uni gives settings to put in the iPhone:
Add VPN Configuration, IPSEC mode.
Server: “vpn.usyd.edu.au”, Account: Unikey login name, Group Name: “wireless”, Secret: “jacaranda”
Now when I try to add IPSec on my G1, it asks either for a pre-shared key or certificate, neither of which I have. And none of the IPSec options on my G1 allow me to put in an account or group name... Any ideas?
Any help appreciated!

Configuring POP3 mail from Shaw (Canada)

Has anyone been able to configure the Outlook email to pick up email from a Shaw account? (Shaw is an internet provider here in Canada)
I went to the Shaw site and changed the POP3 and SMTP servers to the ones suggested, but I'm still getting a 'not able to download messages' message from Pocket Outlook..
Thanks for your help.
Got it!
OK, I got it to work, so I thought I'd post it here for others, just in case someone else had difficulty.
email address = [email protected]
Incoming Mail Server = pop.shaw.ca (type=POP3 is greyed out)
Username is xxxxx (the first portion of your email address before the @)
Be sure to tick the 'Save Password' box
Outgoing Mail Server = shawmail.cg.shawcable.net
Be sure to untick/clear the 'Outgoing Server requires authentication' box
....then, just set things up as you want them.
Have fun!

IMAP servers are all named mail.shawcable.com good luck
I have been struggling with this for almost 3 months now, and never seemed to be able to get it to work properly, sending both on 3G and Wi-fi using the same server information.
Turns out, it was impossible. Shaw just wasn't set-up for it.
However, THEY'VE FIXED IT!
Here is what you need to do.
----------------------------------------------------------
First, you need to goto your shaw webmail and access the new Shaw Webmail BETA they have started.
Login there, and goto the preferences in the top right.
Goto the Mobile Access tab, and enable mobile access (hit enable, type in your password, and select save at the bottom).
*Note, notice the the password requirements under this menu, as although you CAN ENABLE mobile access with a password that does not meet the requirements (perhaps an older one you have not updated, like me) you will NOT be able to login on you phone with it, so you'll have to go change the password in the online help page (which is kind of a hassel, to be honest)
Once it is enabled, these are your server settings.
Type of Account - Pop3
Incoming server: pop.shaw.ca
Username - <your account>@shaw.ca *note, you must add the "@shaw.ca"
Pass - <your password>
Security Type: None
Port: 110
Outgoing Server: mail.shaw.ca
Login is Required.
Username - <your account>@shaw.ca *note, you must add the "@shaw.ca"
Pass - <your pass>
Security Type: TLS
PORT: 587
*the security type and port are not standard... so watch for this.
This will now allow you to both check and send e-mail on both Wifi and 3G.
Just wanted to say thanks for this. Been struggling with this for a few hours. Would never have found the mobile setup preferences in the beta Shaw web mail.
Configuring iPhone4 to use webmail in wifi environment
I recently purchased an iPhone 4 and had it set up for wifi use to access my Shaw Webmail account. Telus is my provider.
My incoming email works fine with the configuration using pop.shaw.ca, my user name, and password.
However, my outgoing has never worked in the Wi-Fi environment. The threads earlier talk about using Shaw Webmail BETA to go to the Mobile Access tab, and enable mobile access.
Shaw has discontinued Shaw Webmail BETA, and have launched Webmail 2.0
so the Webmail site with 2.0 does not have a Mobile Access tab.
Consequently, my outgoing emails under a Wi-Fi environment still won't send.
My outgoing Mail Server was set up by the folks who sold me the iPhone, and it has the following:
SMTP smtp.telus.net
Other servers: shawmail.ok.shawcable.net
ok.shawcable.net
mail.shaw.ca
shaw.cg.shawcable.net
None of the "Other servers" have a username or password inserted. The above other servers were just added a week ago by the retail store, and a message does come up when I'm using wi-fi saying:
"A copy has been placed in your outbox. The recipient "%@" was rejected by the server because the user is unknown."
When i wait awhile and check, the message does send. Anyone know which of the outgoing is the correct one, and is there anything else a person needs to know about Webmail 2.0 to get the settings right??
I just went crazy trying to figure this out for two weeks. Both SHAW and WIND told me it was not possible. I could get the incoming working but not the outgoing.
Here is what worked.
1. SIgn up for shaw beta webmail - type in wmbeta.shaw.ca
2. Under mobile preferences, select ENABLED versus DISABLED.
3. Then the instructions on this PDF work. The forum won't let me paste links, but there is a PDF that comes up from SHAW when you google "shaw email android"
Good luck!

Thanks for the instructions. However I tried the method in the website, but still din work for me.
can you tell me you settings?
email: [email protected]
server address: xxxmail.com
domain: xxx
username: abcde
password: **** (includes a dot.)
SSL selected
At my outlook:
connection tab -> selected "Exchange over the Internet"
Under connection settings: Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange -> "https://xxxmail.com"
Proxy authentication settings -> NTLM Authntication
for the url, if the https:// is already written on the side you do not need to re-write it again...
then u tick the use SSL box, then tick the box under that and write "msstd:xxxmail.com"
and keep everything else the same...

I'm running Cyanogen 5.0.7, and I read all the post but did not see anywhere that is supports RSA tokens. I might still try it and see if it works. Thanks!
It says "Cisco VPN Client". I know that Cisco VPN supports RSA tokens, having used one for a long time.

Do you think it will still work on a N1, I see that the instructions are for the Desire?

Thanks to Jack_R1 I believe I have everything loaded correctly. Now could someone tell me where I can find my IPSec info on my computer? I'm not to familiar with the VPN stuff, but I have been working at this forever. I'm trying to do this on the low from my company since they said that they won't do it for me.
Any help would be great, thanks.
If you're using any proprietary sw to connect, look there in the connection properties to find the server IP. If not - look in Windows connection properties for VPN 'dialing' connection.

Our computers use Nortel Contivity, but I can't find the connection properties anywhere. I see the destination ip, and the assigned ip.
The IPSec gateway address should be what?
IPSec ID?
IPSec Secret?
bump for help!
Couldn't find anything and not familiar with Nortel SW..
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=441042
"You will now be asked first for your Ubuntu password, and then the following VPN info: the IPSec gateway address (the hostname of the VPN router you want to connect to), the IPSec ID (aka group ID), IPSec secret (aka group password), username (your VPN username), and password (your password or the value of your SecurID or other token if you have one)."
I guess you need to ask your IT personnel for IPSect ID and secret. IPSec gateway you can find from settings:
http://www.it.ubc.ca/security/VPN/setupdocs/nortelcontivity.html
"Destination" field holds it.

I believe that I have all my settings correct but I'm still getting "failed to connect". I'm going to do a little more searching but if I can't get it I'm giving up, I have spent hours on this. Thanks for all your help Jack_R1.
I've just started trying to make this work also. Lex, did you ever find a solution?

Nope, I tried everything. Jack r1 was very helpful, but I just couldn't get it. I think my company's security is just too high to bypass and my lack of knowledge didn't help.

[Q] Space in Mail username

Hi everybody!
My eschange server (Active directory) allows me to connect as Name Space LastName.
The outlook client in my brand new HD7 doesen't!
Any workaround??
THanks in advance
Your post doesn't make a lot of sense.
My eschange server (Active directory) allows me to connect as Name Space LastName.
Through what? Outlook? Yes, that is somewhat normal, even though Outlook, in the background, connects as your Active Directory account name, even though it displays to you First Last.
In your phone, and this is the same on ANY phone you connect to Exchange with, you have to make the initial connection with your account name/email address. Then password. Then the phone tries, fails, and wants your Domain name. Then the phone tries, fails, and makes you hit an Advanced button to enter the servername (typically mail.servername.com).
It's really not much different than any other phone that ever existed that has the ability to connect to Exchange.

same problem here...
username: john malcovich
password: test
domain: losangeles.com
server: iphone.losangeles.com
"john malcovich" cannot be entered
only
"johnmalcovich"
damn it
any idea if Mango RTM support Exchange username with space in it?

VPN questions

I am using the newest talon kernel and vpnc widget and it works with our vpn concentrator. We use IPsec with group and group password. I am SO glad I got this working but from a security prespective vpnc widget leaves much to be desired. I do not want to have the username and password save where if someone took my phone they could remote in.
So my question is does anyone know of another application that will work with Cisco IPsec group authentication and permit it NOT to save the username and password. I downloaded an applications called "VPN connections" but it would not work for some reason. No logging that I could see so no idea why it failed.
This is huge for me with my job, I need to be able to test connectivity remotely but I also do not need to open my organization to risks by allowing an app just to be clicked on and boom...your inside our network.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.
