Tethering and Theme Issues - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My boyfriend and I both have CyanogenMod 4.0.4 on our phones. I have to say, again, compared to JF ADP, it has been wonderful (Though since my boyfriend's wasn't done on a wipe, I can see he still has issues, and I knew he should have done a wipe!). (His phone went from stock Android to Cyanogenmod, and mine was easier - JF to CM)
One issue on his phone is tethering. I have updated the Radio, thinking that was the problem, but still nothing, details:
I have installed Wireless Tether for Root Users
I have changed the channel to 12, just like mine, because all channels are too commonly used where I live except the illegal ones. And since our phones don't generate a lengthly signal to begin with,I find it okay to use channel 12. (It's only illegal if it ever interferes with governmental signals, I looked deep into that one since I have DD-WRT on my router, though a router is more likely to interfere than our phones.)
I have changed the SSID to G1Tetherer
Since I picked the easier way in the beginning when I had JF ADP, I had been using aNetShare, and that actually asked for me to install something to use for tethering on my phone, so I also tried this method to see if it would work on his phone, to no avail.
So when I turn on the tethering App, none of our laptops see the SSID, no matter how close it is to our laptops. It does not show up at all. It doesn't appear to work either.
Is there something else I'm missing?
Now onto themes.
I had followed the simple route of installing a theme. Prior to this, I mindlessly deleted my recovery image, and since this has been my only source of internet, I feel pretty lucky having it back. I installed this theme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=555155 First I was and decided to install the first one. It only replaced my icons, some of my other settings, and my thingymajig at the bottom. Well, I WANTED the whole thing to have a black theme, so I decided to install the OTHER one ontop of that. Next boot screen takes FOREVER. Then the Android screen takes EVEN LONGER. Next I know I have a black, blank screen.
Now I was lucky that the CM-updater that was used on my boyfriend's phone was still just sitting there! I used that and finally got up and running again, but I am just wondering, why is that happening? Or was it just a bad idea to install one theme on top of the other? OR MAYBE, since it's 2:48AM, I should go to bed and wake up to wondering what the hell did I post this for? Also, is there anything I should be cautious about next time around, so I don't screw something up?
Thanks much for any responses,
Kelpie

Well I can somewhat answer the theme issue: Don't flash a theme on top of another. What I suggest is go to the CM Rom thread for stable release, download the theme template he provides and keep it on your sdcard's main folder. Whenever you want to switch themes, I suggest you first go back to default theme by flashing the template file. Then adding the new theme after it reboots fully into the default theme.
It seems like whatever the second theme you flashed probably had the new lockscreen or other sort of HTC related apps that uses different frameworks and flashing it on top of one without can cause a long boot process, then I'm assuming it hangs since the first themes uses edited colors in it. But thats all technical stuff, you just need to remember to go back to default 4.0.4 template first and only flash themes made for 4.0.4 rom.

Tethering..
I know this is probably a silly question, but did you click "always allow" when it asked for SU (root) permission?

Yep. I always do that. I hate that popup as much as I hate UAC or whatever it's called for Vista, Windows 7, and semi-XP. It just dawned on me that there are a lot things that need root versus a true linux distro lol.
It works on my phone, but my phone still has the stock battery, and the charge doesn't hold when it's getting hot for too long (I've had to put it in the freezer several times). So I wanted to make it so he can use his for his internet and mine for my internet.
As for theme - I thought I should have, but I guess I was lazy. It actually looks like the problem is more associated with the theme, because people on that thread are having that issue and have even done a full wipe. People are also having the issue with the theme not fully displaying properly, so I guess I'll take this issue into that thread later on.

wow, where to begin?

Well, I ditched my iphone to try out the nexus one... I just got the phone today and I barely know how to use it stock (2.1). Phone is untouched, brand new from google...
I guess I would like to take advantage of the phones power and more importantly, try out version 2.2.... any advice where to begin, tutorials etc? thx in advance, I will go back to reading this site!
First, get to know your phone. Use it as long as you can before rooting, until you get used to it and EVERYTHING it does. When it starts to get boring, ROOT it! By that time you should know every secret the phone offers!
not a big fan of patience... I would like to learn to root it and play around... but nothing brick like...
2.2 would be nice and anything else people recommend, lol....
thx man, goodnight.

Inside there's a link, follow the Pre-requisites on that link first... and setup ADB first.
ok so set up that ab thing first then follow the tutorials... also, should I have mentioned it is a *rogers 3g phone (att&t)
thx again and goodnight 4 real
If you barely know how to use it stock.... you should probably figure that out before you go around rooting it, flashing custom ROMs, and trying the latest BETA OS release. Once you've got the stock OS figured out and are getting bored with it, THEN root and move on.
Learn how the phone works. This is no iPhone and the settings with this phone are plentyfull. Have in mind that after you flash a Cyanogen ROM for instance, you will have 4 times more settings to play with, hence the advice to learn the basic functions on your N1. But anyways, you will come to a certain point where the GEEK in you wakes up and you wanting MORE..
DO also know that when you want to root your phone, you need to unlock you phone. Doing this will VOID YOUR WARRANTY. I will also advise you to use your phone for a period of time to see that there are no issues with hardware and build of the phone (buttons, dust under screen, trackball not working, not chargin, loose connectors etc etc..), just to be safe. Coz once you unlock it, there is NO going back to lock it again (at this point)
Setting up ADB and Recovery can be the most struggling with drivers and interface but once that is passed and you start using recovery on a daily or weekly basis, is all smooth ride from there. I guarantee you many hours customizing and experimenting with this phone than any other non-andoid phones you have had in the past.. is pretty much an addiction. i have rebooted this phone more the last 3 months than any other phones in my whole lifetime .
Rule of thumb is always have a recent Nandroid (backup done in recovery) before flashing. Flashing ROM's are usually safe as safe can be. Kernels are not risky to flash either, but remember that Kernels are the ones that controls voltages and speed of you Processor and other things, and flashing wrong Kernels can result in non functioning behavious in your OS and worst case, the processor overheating, so know what you are doing when flashing Kernels. At one point you will start trying out kernels because if you are on a hunt for more battery life, the ROM + Kernel combination are the main things that makes this happens.
Then , a last note: I addvise you to NOT update radios if you don't have any problems with the one you have. The Radio's are the one that controls your ability to call controls your phone's antenna and Wi-Fi. If you DO flash radios and happen to terminate the process, i guarantee you a bricked phone. So beware. If you upgrade to FROYO, one of the processes is flashing a new radio. So let things runs it course once in process.
Have fun trying to optimize your phone to last as long as it can on one battery charge...
If you like to begin in Android World you can start from the following blog

pretty valid points from all of you, thanks very much.... I think I will give it a week or atleast the weekend... once I got in on luck.... maybe I will move on
I do buy and sell phones a lot... might be best to wait and see if there is a way to reverse the process and keep warranty intact first?
thx a bunch.
since the OTA Froyo should be coming in by maybe end of next week, i'd wait and just mess with 2.1 for now

It should definitely be soon, and will give you a chance to have new software and features without voiding your warranty. Win-win :-D

I really recommand to do that exact thing:
learn nandroid (backups )
then play with your 2.1
2.2 will be out before you could have learned everything you wanted from 2.1
thx again, I am pretty excited about 2.2... coming from a 3gs... I kind of thought I would not like my n1.. but I see no problems with 2.1.... I cannot imagine the performance increase it claims.... gonna be sweeeeet.
So, anything non warranty killing you guys recommend? apps/tweaks etc? thx

You can download Launcher Pro from the Market to replace the current home Launcher. It will allow you to have up to 7 home screens and makes everything a whole lot smoother when you swipe between the screens.
sweeeeet tip bro, thx!
i believe that there exists a non-warranty-voiding method of updating to froyo. it's much faster than 2.1, and battery life is also improved.
for apps, there are threads about it but, some that are just pretty darn neat would include:
google skymap
barcode scanner
google goggles
some augmented reality apps would be:
layar
wikitude
for a better typing (rather swiping) experience, get swype. you should be able to find instructions on how to put it on around here, and there is a non-timed release in the apps/themes section
i use 'and explorer' as a file explorer
pandora is a must if you like internet media
google listen isn't bad (although i hear good things about other apps) for pulling down any podcasts you like
and, go give the navigation app a try. it's the bees knees. not only does it give turn by turn directions, but as long as you load the trip while in a 3g or wifi connection, it caches the whole thing, so you can drive through dead zones and won't lose the the path, as long as you have gps signal. plus, it switches to street view to show you the destination, when you get there

yeah, i updated mine via the non-warranty-voiding method, but since i like some of the apps that require root, i had it rooted
to update to frf50 (Froyo) without voiding warranty, you need to download the OTA file and rename to update.zip and place in the root of the SD card
1. power off phone
2. hold down volume down button and press power
3. scroll to recovery and hit power (should take you to screen with an exclamation mark or something similar
4. while holding down power button, press volume up
5. this should take you to stock recovery and you can now apply update.zip from sd card
those may be the correct steps, i don't think i'm missing anything; there's some guide located in the general forum
thx for the app suggestions, I will try them all
as for the above instructions... each site I try to grab 2.2 from.. says it no longer exists? thx

[Q] "dead" phone

I have a dead phone I'm toying with. It's not on with the network. This is my first attempt at rooting etc. I would like to just have it as a sort of game/fun/toy phone. I have a G1 from Tmobile that I use and not going to try and root until I get a new one, then perhaps also have that as a game/fun/toy phone. Anyway, I have a Sprint Hero and how I've been getting apps and such on it is by swapping SD cards and doing a back up or connect via wi fi from one of the sites with a list of freeware to download. I want to get rid of the apps that I don't want/need for this phone. I'm not going to use it to call people so I would like that off too if I could. I would like to keep the wi fi though. I am new to this and trying to figure everything out. I just got busybox and rom manager on the phone. So, now what? How do I get those annoying stock apps I don't want/need? I really don't need to change the whole face of it, just those apps to be removed and I'll be happy with it. Thanks
by the way
I forgot the build.
I'm on 2.31.651.7
rooted from one click that I found from the unlockr
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hero_CDMA#Miscellaneous_Simple_How-To.27s.
Please search around, most of the common questions, more often than not, have already been answered.
ok thanks. it's just so time consuming to be sitting on the computer trying to search and read through so much. I don't sit on my butt all day staring at a screen. I have a baby and any screen time is when he's sleeping. It's just easier to ask and hope for an answer. I'll look through the links later. Thanks.
I also want it as some type of "toy" for him to play with instead of taking MY phone! lol. I have toddler lock on it and he seems to like it. But I don't really want him to have it until he stops "chewing" on it. My G1 case cover is ruined from him. lol. oh well. He likes to play with phones because everyone else does. They start early now. I downloaded all sort of kid games so when that day comes, I can say, here you go when he takes mine!
But I'm lost on figuring out if there is a program I need? Or if the superoneclick has it in the app. I have it on our Windows computer and I'm currently on our Mac. And that computer is so slow and now I have to spend the time to try and clean IT out. Its running Vista and I have a copy of 7 but I don't feel like dealing with all of that. sigh.
Does tethering work with phone to phone? Like connect my non network phone to my G1 for internet like when we go on vacation and my nonsmart phone partner wants to use the net and so do I, that we can share. I'm guessing USB cable would do that? I don't know, there is just so much to read up on for a newbe trying to figure it out. Time for sleep now.

Well, nobody around here sits around on their butts staring at the screen, waiting for people like you to ask questions... so that they can answer. If you think of this as "Customer Service", think again. Everyone here has primary jobs, they do this because they like it and are passionate about it.
Having said that, nobody is saying "No" to answering questions... just try searching and looking up the obvious links, first.
Geeze. sorry. I just thought Maybe someone else maybe already had done it and point me in the right direction. I try searching and can't find anything in what I'm trying to do. So a here, try this and this and such would be nice. Thought I give a bg on what I wanted to do with it. And I'm still new and get lost around here. Tech langauage changes every 6 months along with the phones. I see "flash" and I think of the Adobe program or the flash on a camera. So forgive me. And I guess nevermind.
I agree with the others here. There is a wealth of tutorials available, and when used will achieve your goal of a "toy". However, I will help you out by providing a framework of things you will need to do. Bear in mind you will need to do the searching though. This way you will learn more about the phone, and you will have a better sense of what to do if something doesn't go right, etc.
First, you need to have your phone rooted. Rooting allows you full access over the phone. Most rooting utilities will install "Busybox", a set of binaries that grants you the ability to use special commands. Next, you will want to install a custom Recovery image. There are two mainstream ones available: Amon-RA and ClockworkMod. Either is fine. The recovery image allows you to make backups of your phone, install new ROMs, and reset settings, among other things. After the recovery image is installed, you will want to search for a list of "safe to delete apps".
I hope this helps you somewhat. If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.

nook decided to reset itself

I am hoping someone can help me with this. I had my nook rooted, market, youtube and gingerbread keyboard installed and working. different boot screen flashed. i plugged it in to my pc here at work to charge. when i unplugged it, it was at the startup screen with the android. The old boot screen is back. All apps are removed. it appears to still be rooted, but I cant bring up keyboard at all. All my apps and everything I installed are gone. I don't understand what happened to it. Any one have any idea? Thanks!
A wizard did it.
Seriously others have reported similar anomalies The thing to do is wipe and start over. I suggest you get titanium back up so you don't have to completely start over next time.
I figured thats what I would have to do. I don't think i would have needed to, had I not installed the gingerboard keyboard. I was just wondering if anyoen else experienced, perhaps we could pinpoint the problem and figure out what to do to avoid it. Worse part is some one wanted to see it after I told them not to waste thier money on an ipad, they come over and it doesnt work at all. Well it worked, but just as an e-reader, bleh who bought it for that, lol.

Dropbox works very well indeed. Awesome Drop is also very good. While it offers no online storage, it doesn't require an account either. However, neither wanted to work without an External SD card. Haven't looked into they wouldn't use the internal storage. Anyone know?
Possibly it updated to 1.01? Mine was act a little strange, then all of a sudden it updated to 1.01 (even with the script in place to disable over the air updates).
I also had some sporadic reboots. Just re-rooted after the 1.01 update and it seems more stable. I also installed an uptime widget to monitor and it's been up now for 11h 30m..
In a couple more weeks it won't matter as the 2.3 build continues to progress..

It plays every game I throw at it, just as good as my Incredible. Most apps fit the screen well and its only going to get better. best 250 I ever spent. I literally carry this thing everywhere I go!

Another data point: got my Nook Color December 25. It was version 1.0.0. Updated to 1.0.1 and rooted with auto-nooter-2.12.25 on December 26. All went well (including using the Shop, though I didn't buy anything) until last night. Entered the shop and got the infamous "authentication problem" message, after which my nook reset itself. When it was finished, the green 'n' icon in the lower left was on (which is odd, since it appears to have updated from 1.0.1 to 1.0.1).
When the dust had settled, the device was still rooted (I still have Market, still have NookColor Tools, still have SuperUser), but everything I'd put on since rooting was gone, and all my settings (wifi key, barnes and noble account, gmail account) were gone.
I'm reasonably familiar with linux (though only a little bit specifically with android), so I'll be happy to poke around to see if I can find anything....
Possible reason?

Nook will turn on by it self after 5 minutes or so

First I thought that I'm crazy but now I can confirm that my NC will boot on it's own after about 5 minutes after power OFF. I have to shut down 2nd time and than it will stay OFF. Any idea what's wrong ?
Thanks
(Yes I did confirm after first shut down that it's actually OFF since no buttons will respond)
Any weather Apps running? Many of them have an option to wakeup in order to update. Check your mail, twitter and facebook apps. It has to be something you installed, I have run every update, tried all the froyo images and both Honeycomb releases and I have not seen that.
To expand on what gedster wrote, it seems kind of crazy and out there but what about any devices on your network that might send Wake on Lan requests? What if something on your network had located your NOOKcolor. I don't even know why a eReader Tablet would have a function for Wake on Lan but it's just another crazy avenue to jog down.
I do have weather app installed but I find it hard to believe that it can wake up OS that is not in standby but completely off. WIFI is also not enabled before shutdown.
Looks like the problem is there only if I used market, if market is not used it will shut down fine and it will not boot on its own.

Seems that's unlikely if you're the only one having the issue, I'd keep digging if I were you.
Looks like you're right I can't replicate the problem every time
The timing when it will boot also varies 5, 15 and even 35 minutes.
Don't know what to do, it's hard to imagine how it can boot on it's own from
complete power off state
I can't believe I'm the only one with this problem

I just posted a thread about this issue for me less than an hour ago! Funny, no one replied to mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940713. It was pretty long...guess I should've added a TL;DR.
It happens to me on any (or no) power source. Timing varies like yours as well. I'm going to pull my weather app based on the above recommendation, and I will try your Market theory out. Knowing someone else has this issue makes me hopeful that we can find something that we have in common as the culprit.
I did download the newest Honeycomb image yesterday and I'm going to put that SD card in and see if I can get it to turn itself back on on a Market-less, user App-less build. If successful I'll Titanium my 1.1 apps and remove everything non-system, then slowly add until I get this figured out. Keep me posted if you figure something out, I'll be sure to do the same!
In case it matters I bought mine about a week ago and the serial number starts with 20046.
EDIT: Testing with Honeycomb SD now so if that's the case here it should just stay off. I booted into Honeycomb at 9CST and turned it off at 9:01. I'll give it a couple of hours.
I used to have this same problem. I would randomly find my 1.0.1 auto-nootered 950mhz rom nook on, when I knew I had turned it off. interesting part is, this problem completely solved itself after I flashed my emmc with the custom nookie 5.9 img. so it must be an eclair issue and not a hardware issue

Really? I've been putting that off because I don't like the idea of not having Clockwork Recovery. I understand there are ways to do the same things using IOMonster's things but I'd really rather just have Clockwork Recovery working. Unless there's a way to get it going that I missed?
Yup, I've been having this issue as well. I really want to flash NF but I want hardware video acceleration.

you are correct that clockwork does not work with froyo. however the bootable sd card that you would burn automatically starts up clockwork first. you can run a backup and restore, as far as i know, without having to reflash froyo. on a personal note, froyo still has some issues but overall I'm exteremly pleased so far. i really just wanted to get rid of all of the b&n stuff (mainly the status bar) along with any possible way of them pushing an update to break root. I would recommend it, but CM 7 with gingerbread will probably be out sooner rather than later.

Now that I understand the power of this things SD slot and that CWR can be run off of an SD, I can totally live with that. Hardware Video isn't a must for me yet, so I may take the plunge tonight after work...BTW, what are people's favorite video apps? I have been playing with VLC stream and convert, which works somewhat with my media server's samba shares. I have the share mounted to a directory on the sdcard since many apps look there exclusively.
More on topic, I couldn't get SD Honeycomb to start itself on its own. I tried booting then shutting down. 2 hrs of nothing 15mins light activity then shutting down. 2 more hours of nothing. About an hour of heavy use, seeing what could be installed, sideloading, testing, editing things like build.prop and rebooting often and trying to get swype working (don't think it's supposed to, but that's "heavy use" for me.) Powered down. Went to bed. Still not on this morning. This looks indeed to be an issue with the B&N stock Eclair.
Mine doesn't turn itself on with no interaction at all, but will turn on every time when you plug in the charger or cable hooked to USB port in computer.
I can turn it off once it is already plugged in and it will stay off, but remove and replug the charger and it is on again.
Strange.
Well, strange that only two or three of us noticed this strange problem.
Yeah, started for me after 1.1 update. Turned it off last night, tonight it was on with 40% battery! I think its 1.1 related, this didn't happen with 1.0.1 ...
I'm sure there's a condition that's causing or exasperating this issue, something common to us all. But at this point since I don't use the Nook as a video player (I actually bought it to read books, but I use Aldiko and the open epub format) I will likely flash Nookie to the eMMC and call it a day. Honestly can't wait to get a clean notification bar on this thing anyway.

[Q] HEELLLPP!! I didnt strapsafe, now I dont know what to do!!

To the admins I apologize if this is in the wrong section if it is please move it accordingly.
Hello everyone, I have an issue, hopefully someone can hel me and it starts like this. I and everyone else have been waiting for months for a safe root method and a recovery system such as TWRP OR CWM just incase I fudge something up flashing custom roms so I can always go back to stock. I came across a safestrap article and decided it was something similar to what I was looking for. So I decided to root using the big K. I know not the best choice, you can boo me now.
After a successful root, I installed safestrap. Unfortunately safestrap kept crashing upon starting the app, I couldnt even get it to set up. thats fine, I was just going to unroot and keep on living life, but then I stumbled upon Xposed installer, that modified and tweaked like a custom rom but without all the risk according to a website. I said hey thats worth a try and I did. After the Xposed installer setup and a reboot, I wad looking for mods on the web and all of a sudden my apps and system files started crashing to the point that I could not use my phone. I immedeately uninstalled Xposed installer ss soon ad my phone stabalized and unrooted.
I thought everything was good, 4 hours later the apps and system files started crashing again, so I did a reboot and I noticed that custom with the lock came up on intial startup. though I was told I was unrooted by the K program and even double checked using a rootchecker app, which stated I had indeed an unrooted phone. I did another reboot and no custom or logo came out. At this point I just wanted a working phone and As much as I hated doing so I did a factory reset. This seemed to have fixed the problem, but 4 days later my phone randomly went into a bootloop. I couldnt get it to stop so I took out the battery and that did not fix it.It was strange becuase I thought it might have been unrelated since it wasnt doing this when I had the issue with Xposed installer.
After yet another factory reset my phone seems to be fine, its still too early to tell though since its only been about a day. I had the normal google playstore and gvoice app crashing...Sigh..the only thing different was that sometime yesterday after the second factory reset a notification popup of unfortunately a sytem file stopped working came up. I acknowledged it, but thankfully I havent gotten any problems. I forgot what the notification read. hopefully its not related to what happened the other day.I dont know if this is related to one another, but I did notice that before I rooted my android system had automatically upgraded. I looked for issues like this on the net and saw people where having random bootloops after system upgrades and that unchecking scanning for wifi fixed the problem. though I did this and it did not work, thats why I did the second factory reset.
Now Im asking for help if any further issues arise. I love my Note3 and at this point I just want a reliable working device. Im keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully that will be the end of it, but in case it started to act up again, what can I do? any information and help is greatly appreciated. thanks.
Never uninstall any Xposed app that changes system files without first reverting any changes you made with it. Some of them are permanent until they are turned off in the App. Then you can disable the module.

I cannot stress this enough.
READ READ READ.
Too many times have I seen someone read a line or 2 then rush right in ultimately turning their very nice phone into the most expensive paperweight one could own.
On that link I posted, read it until your eyes are bleeding if you truly need to start from scratch.
I am not joking here.

Thanks man. it makes sense. I will look into it. you mentioned read. I have read what I thought was plenty, but always ideas and opinions differ, sometimes knowing too much and causing what they say decision paralysis. Because I still read about the Xposed experiences and different people go about it in a different way. but what you mentioned about reverting back makes alot of sense.
