DEV Phone protected/paid apps - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a friend with a dev phone, I took his device and loaded cyanogen 4.0.4 on there for now. Using it, he tells me he still can't download any paid apps. Is there something the DEV phone just simply can not do as opposed to T-Mobile Dreams? Isn't it all software anyway?
He says it's the same symptoms as before when he was on 1.0 (he never updated the image) where the download will continue to say "starting download"

I have a dev phone, running 4.0.4 - and I can dl paid apps

get Market enabler, it works perfectly...i use it on my spare g1, i see paid apps all day long...

Market update

I have a weird issue and I'm not sure what's going on.
A few days ago I noticed that the market layout got changed a little bit. The three tabs on top changed to Apps|Games|T-mobile. Going to the t-mobile tab shows recommendations from t-mobile. The next day I noticed that it was gone and back to the original Apps|Games|Downloads, and the weird part is that now the market icon is back to the 1.6 one (I've had the android 2.0 icon for a while since I'm running cyanogen).
Oh and I checked with aTrackdog and it says I have Market v1.66 and there's a v1.71 available. Any idea what's going on?
I have a G1 on t-mobile and running CM v4.2.9.1
edit: I feel like this is an app issue and not an issue with the ROM, hence the posting in the apps section. Also, it happened randomly and not immediately after I updated to the newest CM release or something.
Things just get jittery when running apps2sd which you probably are.
I didn't know rooted phones were suppose to get that Update.
So idk you really shouldn't be getting OTA updates like that ESPESH from Tmobile.
So there was actually an update for the market for non-rooted G1 users on t-mo? When did that roll out?

Yea, it's been rolling out/bloggers/sites have been asking if anyone has gotten and it's seemed like it was rolling out, then got pulled back and delayed a lot.
But all the Update does it replace Mydownloads with Tmobiles lame apps.
But the main part about this is it allows you to buy applications and place the cost on your tmobile bill so you don't nessicarily need a credit card which is really cool.
But I'm pretty sure Cyan already twatted it's not likely to get ported to rooted phones or something like that which is understandable since it deals with Tmobile's billing info.
Oh okay thanks for the clarification. It's weird that the update got rolled out to me. I guess it didn't go through the regular OTA update 'channels' or something. I follow a few android blogs and didn't see any mention of it. Anyway I don't really care about adding the cost to my bill, both options are the same to me. As for the tab, yeah the t-mo tab is pretty stupid, I don't care about their recommendations, plus it means it's an extra click to get to my downloads.
So I guess in theory if I reflash the ROM I should at least get the android 2.0 market icon back? I'm gonna wait til tomorrow and try it (since I guess Cyanogen is releasing an update tomorrow)

The change has NOTHING to do with having a rooted phone. In fact, it has nothing to do with the application itself. It is all on the server end.
There are a few bugs that they need to work out before deploying it to the masses. I have been running Cyan's newest ROM since it was released and my tabs have changed from Download to Tmobile and back. Why? Because it's coming from Google's server as such.

Did your icon also revert to the 1.6 one? Anyway I guess that's good news. Means that future changes like this will also roll out to rooted phones.
I really don't think a T Mobile Recomonded tab in the Android market is coming from the Google Server I think it's Tmobile controlling it's phones like when they took the Tether app off the US market and how the Droids market is different than others.
Flashed the newest CM today and it didn't fix the market icon, still have the 1.6 one. It's not a big issue but I just find it weird that the icon got reverted back (if it's just server side changes the icon shouldn't be affected).
I noticed the same thing. I had the default Market, a few days later I noticed it had a T-Mobile button then all of the sudden it appears to be back to the default.
I just simply gave up and said whatever anymore.
verizon already has the new market with VERIZON were our downloads are.
I also have the updated market in a nandroid from cyans rom.

Unrevoked & Wireless tethering Help

I tried doing a search, but couldn't get the answers I needed.
I was trying to do a quick install of Unrevoked on a (believe or not) Sprint employee's Hero. My girlfriend and I went to upgrade her Palm Pre to an Epic 4G. We got to talking and I showed him my hacked Evo with all the bells and whistles via "Fresh." All he was concerned about was getting was Swype and Tethering. Since I didnt really know the guy, I told him that I would bring in my laptop and hook him in the store with unrevoked rather than doing a full fledged root.
Well to make a short story long...
I downloaded unrevoked and what I thought to be the correct tethering app apk. He is running 2.1, and I believe its was update 1. When I ran unrevoked it said that it was rooted sucessfully, but when I tried running the tethering app it says that the phone requieres root. Leading me to believe that it didnt install correctly.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Even point me to a link or two. What should have been a simple task kept me at the store for about 45minutes trying to troubleshoot. Thanks...

Well that probably means their phone is at build number 2.27.651.6. When I ran unrevoked with that build number it said it was rooted but, it wasn't. Load the .5 RUU and then you can do the unrevoked.

Should I buy apps now or wait for froyo?

Hi, new user here. Also kind of new to android in general, but I've been lurking avidly over the past couple of weeks and soaking in as much as I can.
So here is my dilemma:
There a couple of apps that I came across that I wish to buy. However, I'm currently running 2.1 with JH7. I'm waiting for AT&T to release an official Captivate froyo (which I've been reading might be anywhere from a few days from now, or sometime mid December), before I root my phone.
So, if I buy the apps now, they'll get installed onto my phone memory. After froyo, I understand I'll have to option to install the apps on my SD instead - and this is the option I want.
So if I buy the apps now, is there anyway to move the installation files or even somehow reinstall the app to my SD card once froyo hits? If not, I might just have to wait until froyo is released before I buy the apps.
Thanks in advance.
We have 16g of internal mem. compare to 2g on Nexus One. It will not be an issue. But yes when you move to froyo you will still be able to move them over.
Thanks, that's good to know. I guess now I can do some shopping.
Just a more general question: how do the rights for paid software work? Are you generally restricted to a specific phone, or does the buyer still have rights to the software should he later decide to upgrade to a different android phone?

The software you purchase is yours. And can be installed on any Android phone that will run that app. I bought most of apps when I got my droid and have used them on multiple Android phones. Same apps are now on my Captivate. You only have to purchase them once. As long as you sign into your phone with the same account on your previous device. They will show in the market as "purchased" and you just reinstall them to your new device. Hope that explains what your asking.

uninstalling an app
Just thought I would post this here. I bought the SETCPU app which ended up locking my phone when it went into standby. I uninstalled the app, and to my surprise marketplace detected it and automatically issued me a refund.
This phone continues to amaze me. I had the windows Surround phone, kept it 2 weeks, and brought it back to exchange for the Captivate. The windows phone had much better sound, great voice recognition, easy to use, but apps were way too limited and the OS needs a lot more tweaking. The tradeoff was worth it. Maybe by next year windows phones will catch up somewhat.
Returning apps - 24H Refund
Refund policy
You have 24 hours from the time of purchase (not download) to return an application purchased through Android Market for a full refund. You may only return a given application once; if you subsequently purchase the same app again, you may not return it a second time.
How to return an app:
From Market, visit the My Downloads page, and select the application you'd like to return.
Applications that are eligible for return are marked with a 'Uninstall & Refund' button. Please note that after the 24-hour return period has expired, all sales are final.
After 24 hours, selecting the "Uninstall" button will simply remove the application from your device. More about uninstalling purchased applications.
If you're unsatisfied with an application after 24 hours, we recommend contacting the developer directly. Learn more about refunds.

[Q] Market killing 3G connection

I have a weird problem with my AT&T galaxy tab. For the past couple of days, each time I launch the Market, my 3G connection is killed and I can no longer access the network, and of course I cannot access the market. As soon as I kill the market app, my 3G connection comes back.
I cleared the data and cache of the market app, did not solve the issue. When I uninstall the updates of the market app (reverting to the original ugly market app), everything works fine, but it then automatically updates itself and the problem comes back. I assume this is a problem with the market app itself and not my device (hopefully).
Has anybody else experienced this issue and found a fix?
I am running stock ROM with third party apps installed enables (done it with superoneclick: root, enable third party apps, unroot).
I have the amazon app store installed, so I can still buy new apps, but I would like to be able to get updates for the apps I have purchased from the market.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
What modem are you using? Does the problem happen when you are using wifi? I think the JMF modem that is available for overcome rom is weak and I get many dropped connections and slow data speeds.
I am using the stock ROM and stock modem, I have never flashed a ROM. It only happens with the Market App.
Same issue for me. I have a rooted stock rom.
I have the same issue. Also stock rom and rooted. When WIFI is on (and connected) the market works fine.
I have been beating my head against this since I bought one. I am rooted using....I think I used Super One Click......stock everything else with non-market apps enabled. I originally thought that Root had broken it; however, if I unrooted, reset to factory, I still had the issue.
After many hours at the ATT store and on the phone (and swapping the device once and SIM card twice) I had an epiphany. a Factory Reset does NOT wipe the Internal SD like I thought it did. It leaves /mnt/sdcard/ intact. So, just for kicks, I began looking at my folders here. I MAY have discovered something. Market started working after I restored this folder to it's factory content (deleted any folders having to do with Apps in general).
I can typically hold power, deactivate Data connection, wait a few seconds, re-enable, and I get 3g back (at least for browser and other apps, Market still fails).
I have PSX4Droid installed (PSX Emulator if you don't know). There is a folder here named /.psx4droid, so I renamed it to /psx4droid (If I remember correctly, doesn't the "." hide the folder......too long since Linux class). I then deactivated/reactivated my data, and the Market started working properly.
I am not sure if it has to do SPECIFICALLY with psx4droid or just the "Hidden" folder in general, but now my Market works. I have 2 more folders in this location (/.downloadTemp and /.FileExpert) that may/may not cause any problems. I will post my findings.
.....Okay, so I'm going to type what I write now....Market just failed. Now I'm renaming /.FileExpert....Let's see what happens......
Damn. Still fails. But I'm tellin' ya. There is something in this folder causing it.
Or maybe some app is causing it to break......I have Amazon App store installed, what about you guys?
I do have Amazon App installed.
Anybody with an AT&T Tab not having the issue?
Same issue here. I had the Amazon Appstore installed but uninstalled it probably a week afterwards. Rooted running stock, everytime I go into the market it crashes the 3g. I found a folder in sdcard/android/data that had a bunch of appstore files in it. I deleted that and still having the same issue. I have removed all 3rd party apps so I have no idea what is triggering this. Please help.
P.S. I can access the market on WiFi
This also happens to be sometimes, if you tap wifi on then off again your 3g should come back and work fine.
swyped from a galaxy far far away...
Unfortunately what you proposed did not work. The market is killing the network connection each and every time. The network connection only comes back when the market app is not active anymore.
Since everything works fine when the market upgrades are uninstalled, I really think it is a bug in the newer version of market. Hopefully, the next update will fix this.
Maybe when Gingerbread is out!
I'm thinking this has more to do with us having installed amazon appstore before it was supposed to be. Somebody is mad at us
Has anyone made any progress on this situation?
Sent from my SGH-I987 using XDA App
I really wish I would have made more progress. After all the trouble I had with the device with this issue, I was seriously monitoring the apps I installed and then testing the Market. I gave up after a while since I am on Wifi 90% of the time and hardly ever do I access the Market while driving. I still have a feeling that something in /mnt/sdcard is causing it. Like I had mentioned, I could wipe back to factory and the problem was still there. I seem to remember that it only started working proper after I had cleared this location of crap. I would think that a Market update would see a larger group of affected tabs than just a handful of us. This doesn't seem to be a widespread issue.
That being said......I have decided to move on to Gingerbread. Maybe that'll fix it
Hey guys, try this. Worked for me and my Data problems with Gingerbread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13751694&postcount=6
Basically create a new APN inside Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. Only set the APN to "Broadband," save it (Menu button) and select the radio button for it. Instantly fixed my data issues.
Thank for the tip. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. I am running stock 2.2 and waiting for the official 2.3 update from AT&T.
Good Luck. I thought about waiting for the official.....but I also have a Captivate. We didn't get 2.2 until MONTHS after the rest of the world (I think it was like 5 or 6 months later). I didn't want to wait that long again.

Could you please report if the problem fixed with Gingerbread ?
At first I didn't have ANY cellular data until I created a new APN mentioned in the tagged thread (APN Broadband). Now I have no issues with Market. I wish I could trust AT&T to release Gingerbread in a timely fashion, but I know better. So instead, I flashed Overcome.
P.S. I really can't enough of the CRT lock animation......damn I'm such a geek....

[Q] Cannot connect to Play Store on A855

I have a motorola droid A4855 and I'm running cm 7.2RC2i installed gapps and ive got rom manager/clockwork recovery and so on...
Here is my issue. I have never been able to get the play store to work. I just bough this phone from a friend of mine a week ago for like $10. I haven't had a phone in almost a year and I'm still somewhat new to Android.
Well before I rooted this phone and put the ROM on it it was still on its basic ROM. I was able to at least open the Market and it would have me put in my credentials to log into google to do the sync thing so I could access and download apps. but it always said it couldnt connect. I have it running off of wifi because I do not have a 3G data package as of right now. I'm not going through a traditional US phone carrier either, although I will be in the near future here. Right now my wireless carrier is through Reach Out Wireless (a government supplemented wireless program). It runs on the Verizon network though. I check my number and it comes back as Cellco dba Verizon Wireless.
Now that I have rooted and installed CM I installed the gapps and now have the Play Store (as opposed to the Market previously). I click on the app to open it and it gives me the dialogue of "You must add an account to the device to continue. DO you want to add one now?" and it gives me the option of Yes and No. I click on yes because I obviously want to, but then the app just closes and I'm back to my home screen. I've downloaded and installed the play store from several different sources and it still doesn't work. Neither do any of the other apps that require a google login. They all ask to chose the account and there are none visible and they give me the option to create a new account but I click on that and it does nothing as well...
Anyone have any idea why this could be happening? Is it just because I don't have a data package? Every other app on my phone works perfectly fine through wifi. And I have tried about 6 different wifi sources as well at home, work, 3 different mcdonalds and a starbucks.

Problem solved. I was not installing the proper gapps package... D'OH! stupid me lol
Ok so not completely solved... The play store keeps saying that my device is not compatible with a lot of the apps I want to download. Most of them say that they require 2.1 and up or 2.2 and up. Well I have 2.3.7 with CM7RC2 on my droid correct? Therefore my device should be compatible right? I called google and they said they would check into it. I'm not sure what could be causing this to happen...
