replacing a "spare" g1 - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i usually try to stay away from tmobile customer service, especially over the phone, but on my spare G1 the speaker just went all fuzzy and now even at the highest volume wont play anything, i know its not the audio on the phone since i can plug headphones in and everything plays just fine. so the question is, can i return my spare g1, which i did not get from tmobile, in place of my actual g1 that i got from tmobile and get this taken care of or should i just buy a new speaker off ebay. thanks guys, let me know what yall think.
i have a few friends that work at tmob here around town, i am trying to get ahold of them and see if they can get this worked out for me as well.

my opinion, call HTC and let them fix it. The G1's are all still under warranty, and they have a quick turnaround. I was VERY happy with all they did for me. It cost me $5 for shipping to them, they covered the repair and shipping back. WAY cheaper than Tmo charges for shipping. Plus, you keep your phone (they dont just replace it with a "refurb" like Tmo)

alright sweet. i was just looking at the service manual, replacing the speaker doesnt look hard, but 5 bucks is a steal. time to get in touch with them, revert to stock firmware and ship it off. what was the turnaround?

took a couple days there (I sent it priority mail), it was there for 2 days and they called to tell me it was already shipped. The longest wait was for their FedEx ground service which took a week. I think you can request faster service if you pay it, I wish I had asked cause it was a LOOOOONG week.

haha yea i know what you mean. luckily this is my spare and i still have my actual one. i was just doing some more reading in the manual and it says if audio if distorted or not clear to re-flash rom code. im going to try to go to another rom and see if audio is still fuzzy. it may just be a bad rom.
edit----- ok a flash of a different rom didnt do the trick. i am going to call up HTC on monday and get this straightened out. i hardly use the speaker, my phone is usually on vibrate, but no point in having an awesome device if EVERYTHING doesnt work ;-)

Att premier refurbished Tilts any good?

I'm considering buying the refurbished Tilt from ATT premier. Are those any good? if problems, are they just something flashing can fix, or hardware?
I'd like to get some feedback, is it alright to take advantage of the refurbished deal.
Just picked one up.
Bought one last week with a little trepedation after reading some of the threads regarding ATT sending refurbs to replace defective units after 30 days. But for a $150, it was worth taking a look.
Got it in, checked it out and could'nt tell it from new. YMMV!
Glad I got it!
Tom
Referbished ATT Tilt
I just got mine two days ago and could not be happier with it. No signs of referb....looks new to me. Premier price after $25 discount = $125. No brainer.
It's a mixed bag. Refurb can mean many things. It could be a phone that someone bought, used for 10 minutes, and decided they didn't like it. Or it could be a phone that had problems. Either way they are returned to "factory settings" and then relisted for a discounted price. I have heard many stories of people getting a refurb phone and it working flawlessly. But there are also those, myself included, who have had problems with refurbs.
It basically comes down to the luck of the draw. Even if something is wrong with it initially, you can always return it for another one.

I am pretty sure besides returning it to factory settings, they also repair/replace whatever was wrong with them. I couldn't swear to this, but it just wouldn't make any sense if they didn't. If a hard reset would have fixed the problems it was having, it doesn't seem like it would have needed to be replaced, since hard reset is one of the steps you have to go through before they will replace your phone. ATT claims (I've asked them on the phone), that refurbs are repaired, and tested thoroughly.
With that said, I have had problems with BOTH brand new Tilt, as well as refurbed ones. So, I say yes, definitely try the refurb out, you will likely get the same quality as the new ones, which means f you are lucky, you will get a good one, if not you can exchange (same goes for the new ones).
All the refurb ones I have received from ATT have looked cosmetically new. In fact, they look so new, I wonder if they replace the housing on them. Not one has had even a tiny scratch.
got two myself, i agree, they probably replace the case. these are to replace the two 8125s in the house. what roms are you guys rolling with?
bought the wife a refurb about a week ago...its flashed and screaming like new...couldnt even tell its a refurb...and for 150..why not?
I got mine 2 weeks ago and it looked brand new when I got it. I'm still figuring which rom I like and the SNES emulators are slow, other than that its a cool gadget.

Nothing wrong with them. If you have a problem return it. Matter of fact... FLASH Hard SPL/a new ROM as soon as you get it.. I bet its already been done on the phone...
Nothing wrong with refurbs.
do u brought them off from the att website?
I got one after my original NEW one died. Can't tell the difference...works fine. Sprite backup is a lifesaver. Restored to refurbished one almost perfectly. Just had to re-input some registration codes and fix email (app to do that).
I got one last week. Innitially was planning to sell it and continue using my flashed 8125 but just couldn't do it.
The first one i got had a stuck pixel, so did an exchange and got another one. I did a little bit of complaining, so they overnight the replacement to me.
and also, according to the rep that i spoke to, these come with a 1 year warranty, so for $150 and still a 1 year warranty.......you just cant go wrong with that.
Reassuring
Okay, Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll order the premier refurb today! Is it wise to wait until warranty expire to flash/mod, or can I just dive in? after reading more about flashing/upgrading of course.
150$?
Ok, looking at picking up a refurb'd tilt, looks sweet.
I see the 150$ price, but only if I sign up for a 2 year contract...?
Is everyone on here signing a 2 year contract? or am I missing something?
Refirb is a mixed barrel. You will get some that were used/abused and then flashed and re-cased... other returns could simply be "It's not for me" with almost no usage...
However, some retailers have a "No Open Box" policy on phones, if its returned after a 5 minute call it's returned to the vendor -- It's mostly a legal issue, since it could have someone's private data/contact list loaded and unprotected -- this policy ensures they are not responsible if that gets out after the Manufacturer wipes it.
I bought a refurbished tilt. I was pretty apprehensive about it. but I figured, hey, I spent $360 on my 8125 and that was used from eBay, so...why not $150 on something that comes with a guarantee from AT&T?
Other then the sticker on the screen looking like it had been removed and replaced, there was no indication that anything about it was used externally. Inside, under device information, it counted 15 min for incoming calls and 36 min for outgoing calls. That's all. Maybe someone used it and found it too difficult? Or maybe they tried using a BT headset and promptly returned it because the BT stack SUCKS. my only real complaint about the Tilt and that has zero do it with it being refurbished.
My first Tilt had a very obviously defective keyboard, every key surrounding the right soft key didn't work and the softkey itself was raised up so high it would press itself most of the time when closed.
My second one has been good!
BTW, I've used 3 PCs, two headsets, and 1 GPS and no bluetooth problems. The only problem I've had is that I've discovered that if the Tilt is powered down (screen off... not totally powered down) sometimes the headset doesn't pair up, so I just hit the power button on the Tilt then on the headset, wait for the confirmation beep a few seconds later, then turn the Tilt back off.
They are on the regular site for $99.00 as of this morning. You have to click on the bundles or packaged deals. Don't just select the phone.

AT&T Wont let me Return my Tilt!!!

I purchased the phone about a month ago, from the day I purchased it the camera did not operate correctly. I took my device to the store in an attempt to get it replaced with a new one. Unfortunately for me my camera just happened to work that day which was also the last day of the 30 day warranty. The guy pretty much said that he couldnt help me because my device worked, but then he gave me this number saying that if there is any further problems they will take care of it. So I call the ATT warranty department the next day (my camera broke again) and they said that they were sending me a REFURBISHED phone. I talked with them for 2 hours and they pretty much sait there is nothing they can do.
So I get this refurbished phone and right out of the box it looks of poor quality, I later find out that no matter what I do, the device will not charge. So I send in for another refurb which is of even worse condition and this one wont sync to my PC.
Do any of you guys have any ideas that could help I called the warranty department and coustomer care TWICE, asked to speak to both supervisors, threatened to change my entire family's service and they dont reply with anything except that the phone can not be replaced with a new phone. What do you think I should do?
dude that sucks!
ive never had a problem gettin a swap out.. and i bricked my first tilt..
u need to speak to managers and managers only, throw a fit make a scene in the store they'll work with u!
Learn from your mistake so you don't repeat it in the future. If you have an issue with a phone within the 30 day period, make sure it's fully taken care of within that time frame. Unfortunately you took some clerk's word for what would happen instead of double checking yourself.
AT&T most likely isn't going to do anything more from you. They have pretty good customer service and retention, but it is within their rights to give you a refurbished phone.
I also find it hard to believe that they shipped you two refurbished phones that right out of the box appeared to be of "poor quality." If the phone's had a shoddy appearance they wouldn't have been sent back out.
If your next replacement (refurb) is not functional, then tell them that it is getting ridiculous that you have had 3 replacments and they were all bad (again, I find that dubious). If the phone's are malfunctioning to any extent that you can't make calls (like a phone won't recharge) then they should be crediting your account on a daily basis when you can't use the phone.
Lastly, you can threaten to go to your credit card issuer (assuming you bought it with one) or to the BBB. Again, these are mostly threats, and I don't suggest you follow through unless you are truly getting bad refurbs 3 times in a row. Don't just take a negative attitude and look for problems becuase it isn't a new phone...you aren't likely to get one.
However, you could realistically cancel your service, and then refuse to pay any cancellation fees because they weren't honoring their end of the deal by providing you with functioning equipment. Even though you might have a leg to stand on....it will still probably get sent to collections and mar your credit.
Of the refurbs I got, these were in the condition I stated. When I called ATT they said something along the lines of 'every once in awhile a bad one slips through, but its pretty rare.'
I don't doubt a bad one slips through.... but two in a row....
What I am saying is third time is a charm...you can't keep getting bad ones
Also, I know how it can be mentally (as I would feel the same way) that a refurb just isn't as good and you would rather have a new one even if you saw a refurb pass every single test.
Try for #3 and if you are still out of luck...go with the other poster's suggestion and make a scene in the store
This reminds me of when i had the 8525 hermes. I was sent about 3 phones from them that were of bad quality. Bluetooth problems and yellowish tint screen.. The unwritten rule is that after 3 phones youre sopost to get a upgrade of the latest comperable model. Right now the tilt is the latest pocket pc but at the time, the tilt replaced the 8525 and thats how i recieved my tilt..
Moral is.... wait til the next ppc comes out and make a scene.. but also bring that point up to warranty replacement.

Happened to me last week, two bad ones, and a third one that was good. It's possible, and somewhat probable for a scenario like that to occur. It's not like saying he put a million dollars on "00" at the roulette table and won
I'm on my fourth tilt in 6 months. The first one got fried by an ebay charger (I think) my daughter threw the next one and messed up the display (can't believe they haven't charged me for that one... yet) The third did't sync with my PC like one of yours and the forth one's been great. All of the replacments have been refirbs but have looked as good as new with the one being bad out of the box.
I agree with bengalih just get another one if it's bad you'll know right away if not it should be perfectly fine.

Wow Sorry I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing at the insinuation that they would actually care. The sad fact is T-Mobile Is worse in service availability. And Sprint? I wouldn't wish that on my enemy.

No BS this will work !!
I got a brand new custom built HP laptop ( to replace my custom built 2yr old laptop w/ 3yr accidental damage protection) because I followed the same advice I am going to give you. Similar situation with my laptop...sent it back twice, never fixed it right, 14 phone calls, over 450 minutes with customer support and such..won't bore ya with the details
Here's what I did...
Got all my phone records to them together
Had all the invoices etc together
Called and told them I had been "advised" that I had to give them one more chance to make it "right" ! Implying I had legal advise....Then I told them I was going to take them to small claims court..Period !
YES I was going to take them to court cause statistically they always settle!
If not I had my records and was in the right !!! Like you seem to be
Be stern, firm and assertive, not angry or yelling. I basically told them what will happen if they did not make it right...they folded like a cheap lawn chair and I got a brand new custom built $2000 laptop plus a full 3yr accidental damage warranty!
I still get a rush thinking about it !!!
I understand what you mean, but I am completely unprepared to take them to court over such a minor issue. Im going to expend all of my other options first, I still have to go back to the store and argue there that it is there fault because they did not support there 30-day return policy in the first place. The man let me walk out of the store with a broken phone. I should have handeled it then but I didnt realize I would be dialing in and getting more refurbs.
Also, my third refurb arrived today, the device functions completely as intended. The problem now is that the keyboard on this new device does not seem very responsive, or at least, not nearly as responsive as the keyboard on my first device (which I still have). I am upset with this as my other Tilt is in premium condition, not a single scratch. I think I am going to return this one as well.
not good
hey I work for the company and
1. they kinda HAVE to exchange your phone in store if you got it over the phone, over att.com or at a corporate store. if you are within 30 days the rep should do the exchange, the rep u got was an A*&*LE. some act like the store stock and shipping cost come from their pocket.
2. if you get an idiot customer svc rep just hangup and call back , sometime u have to bend the truth. say u have a phone that drops calls ( they are afraid of this) and u tried ur friend's SIM card and still does not work correctly.
3. sorry you did not come to my store.(NY)
4. almost impossible to get a new phone through warranty or insurance.
5. if ya'll have any Q's bout stuff PM me.
out...
This is exactly why sometimes the "best deal" is not a good deal...
I only buy my phones from the bigger retailers, Best Buy & the company directly....
Mom & Pop shops, and online retailers:
- Cheaper up front, can usually get you the best deal if you read the fine print and agree
- Usually require a 2nd contract stating you will not change you plan (or features) within 6 months to 1 year or they charge you a penalty (usually $200 for removing OR changing the kind of data service from a phone like the tilt-- ex.: change from Unlimited data $30/month to Unlimited data & Text for $50/month, you broke the contract, they will charge you $200)
- Do not have to accept returns. Returns are done by companies as a 'favor' -- they are not required by US law (for most stores/products, some exceptions)
Big retailers or the Service Provider directly:
- Always have a return policy
- Almost never require a 2nd contract agreeing to keep features
- Usually $25 more for basic phones, up to $100 more for smartphones (they do not require Data, which most M&P/Internet sites give you $75-$100 off for getting and keeping for 6 months)
Other nice advantage of Big Retailers: If customer service at one place gives you no help and you're within reason to return it... go a few miles to another location and try again.... (again, if you're trying to return something 45 days later, you'll probably get no help where ever you go)
This wasnt a 'Mom and Pop' Shop, it was an official retailer. I was going to get the phone at a smaller AT&T but they said I would have to go to an official store that carried there high-end products. When I bought the phone the person I bought it from, I believe I have his buisiness card, but I will check later, allowed me to open the box in the store. He then told me if I wasn't satisfied I had 30 days for a return or replacement. I came back, 29 days later and they said that I had to call there warranty department because the device was not broken, and there fore he could not replace it. Essentially, they lied to me.
If it's not an AT&T corporate store, it's a Mom & Pop shop...
If they say "Authorized Retailer" they are not directly AT&T, they are reselling AT&T services and do not have to follow AT&T Corporate return policies...
Most of these locations are owned by individuals, or groups of individuals, as a business venture...
Keep in mind, anywhere from 50 to 85% of Wireless stores are NOT corporately owned by their service provider, and all of them (except T-Mobile) are allowed to put giant signs on the front of the building saying "AT&T" "Verizon" or "Sprint"... Sprint requires "Authorized Dealer" added to the logo, T-Mobile requires you to name your store something, and if you use T-Mobile logo it can be no more then 25% of the total sign space. AT&T I don't know the exact policy on their signage, but should require "Authorized Reseller" in the sign...
Of course, people can ignore these requirements, One of my old bosses did.. Hence why he's an old boss..
Quick Tip:
If they don't offer the IPhone they are not corporately owned...
At least in the DC metro area, every corporately owned AT&T store has a live active IPhone on display for customers to try

Lying to T-Mobile to get your bricked G1 fixed?

So, I just got my G1 back after it stayed for a week in this Chinese repair shop. The Chinese men were not successful.
I'm just about to leave for the T-Mobile store. After I figure whether the warranty is in effect, I will come up with a clever reuse to trick the T-Mo man into sending in my brick for repair.
What's the best lie to tell?
Hi,
I was too careless to follow directions and ended up bricking my phone.
Can you give another G1, so I can do the same?
thanks
I'm afraid that won't work. Unless I pay the salesman like $50 to keep his mouth shut.
Just tell them you got an OTA and it never booted back up. Must have been a corrupt download or something.
So I can just tell them I was updating to cupcake and it won't boot?

Pretty much, just leave out the "I was updating.." bit. Blame the phone. "It said there was an update available. I hit OK, and it went dark..."
wddglr has a good idea about calling to save the trip. And a funny quote too.
EDIT: Missed your reply. Well, I don't have a store within an hour of me, so I would always wind up calling. If you have the choice though.. Might be easier to pull it off without worrying about the look on your face. Not sure of any other downsides, since I never deal with any stores.
Alright thanks so much. Since it's on my way to work, I'll just stop by at the T-Mo store and tell them. Hopefully my warranty is still in effect...
I literally just went through this if you've had you're g1 for less than a year just call tech support and they will send you a new one free of charge (you might have to pay the shipping depending on your insurence plan) good luck.
Thanks for the reply Supergoat. WAIT, you have to have an insurance plan to get it repaired?!?! Warranty alone doesn't work?!?!
I think he's implying that you might need to pay for shipping on warranty swaps if you don't have insurance. Not that you need insurance for the warranty itself.
And I think that only applies on the phone anyway.. I've heard stories of people swapping in person, doubt they'd charge shipping then. Good luck.

This may be a stupid question, but do you have to return the old one?
I just got off the phone with them, and they told me they can't do anything since I bought the phone from craigslist. He gave me HTC's phone number and told me to call them, since they will be able to do something. I'll call tomorrow morning since they're closed now, and see what they say. The T-Mobile representative said he doesn't know how much they'll charge or if they'll charge me at all. Hopefully this works out.
I had a similar situation since I also bought my phone off craigslist. HTC kinda gives you that threatening if they notice anything was modified on the phone you get charged bit. I was fortunately able to downgrade the phone to an RC29 (are you sure you shouldn't be attempting to throw that on instead of 7) then I upgraded it up with normal rc33 then cupcake. They took it and replaced my mainboard (my phone was overheating and unable to charge a battery fortunately the T-Mobile star gave me one of the stores batterys from a display device which gave me enough time to downgrade and get back up to cupcake) and didn't charge me anything so I lucked out. Goodluck!
I just got off the phone with HTC. Before I bricked my G1, it was RC29. They sent me shipping instructions and everything, and said I should be paying only for shipping, and $39 or less for repair. Hopefully everything goes well. I'll post my results.
Sometimes you can lie and say you bought the phone from a tmobile authorized dealer and they will swap it out. Just say it was a t a booth in the mall. This has worked for me in the past.
Also for the info on TMobiles warranty policy, if the phone was bought from them or a authorized dealer they will replace the phone for free, if you tell them the thing won't turn on they will not make you go thru more then taking out the battery and SD Card then putting the battery back in. If you tell them the phone will power on they walk you thru a bunch of steps. On a couple of my exchanges the rep sent me out a new phone, battery and wall charger.
You do have to send the broken one back, they send you a shipping label with the refurb phone they send you. Within the first year of owning a new phone with TMobile, insurance is only used if the phone is lost/stolen, water damaged, you broke it on purpose or you tell them strait out "i was flashing the newest JACHero ROM and blam it bricked!"
just call and say your phone isnt working. thye will try to wipe it, tell them its not working. they will send you a box with the new phone. you send back th eother one. dont say **** you dont have to. just keep it simple. DO NOT TELL THEM ITS ROOTED.
Well I'm going to ship it to HTC today, and they should be replacing it for free (I hope). I did go through HTC with this, not T-Mobile. T-Mo kicked me after I told them I didn't buy it from them. I told HTC I bought it from a private seller and they were like "ok that's cool."
I too once freaked out (not to be confused with my earlier freekeout) when my JFroot-to-cyanogen-to-hero theme went AWRY, and bricked at the g1 logo....
I sat there thinking of how much I screwed this one up, and promptly realized that insurance covers anything....and yes I will say, ANYTHING.
there is no limit to a customers stupidity
so without hesitation i made my 13 minute drive.
waited 10 minutes for a tmobile rep. explained that i booted up my phone this morning and it never booted after 2 hours of pocket time....also threw in that ive been on hold for a good hour restarting and trying differnt tricks...
without any hesitation, she typed up a few things, checked in the back and i was onm my way....
she said that if anything happens to bring it back, and if the next 3 brick aswell, then they will automagically give me a NEW phone....IE DIFFERENT model...as to keep who she repeatedly referred to me as a good "customer" happy
so im psyched. they don't know how lucky they were. and my new (seemingly) faster dream are back at it...
just biding time for that XDA app to get out of beta (or atleast become more stabile)

WTF HTC!?! I think my screens almost dead....

hmmm... ok, let me have some opinions on this, I am running fresh 2.3.3, oc 710, clear lock screen. At about 12 noon yesterday my touch screen stopped responding, BUT only at the top exactly where the notification bar is, I know this because I turned on Nexus Revamped Pro LWP and in settings I set the particles to spawn where I touch, I have not been able to pull down my notification bar since yesterday! Ok, stop and think of how inconvenient that is! Anyways, I have gone so far now as to wipe everything and go back to stock fresh 2.3.3(no kernel or any theming) and it still wont work, oh, sometimes when I go to hit the phone soft key(bottom of screen) THE DAMN NOTIFICATION BAR JUMPS DOWN! I am going nuts trying to solve this, the phone was dropped once two days after I got it(almost a year ago) and it has had a Zagg screen protector on it until yesterday because I thought that it might be causing the problem. So there is my rant with some information on the problem stuck in there, anyone have any ideas let me know before tomorrow morning, I will have to go back to stock and unroot so I can go to Best Buy(not so Best Buy) to exchange it.
Wrong forum, try a different rom. but I would unroot and take it back

I had the same problem a few few months ago. The same thing with the notification bar would not slide down, but if you press anywhere on the screen it will. I dealt with for a day or two until I couldn't take it anymore. I reverted back to stock 2.1 and went to the sprint store to get it fixed. The technicians there never heard about this problem and they couldn't fix it. Luckily I was still under a 1 year HTC warrenty, so they just exchanged it with no problem. Hope this helps you out, and good luck.

Well, I tried 4 roms and stock 1.5 and 2.1 today and finally unrooted back to 1.5, I still am within my one year HTC warranty, I payed for a warranty at best buy(boooo!) and I happen to be out of town right now, so I go to the store here and they try to tell me I am not paying for the replacement program or warranty, AND I HAD ALL MY PAPERWORK IN FRONT OF THEM, so they finally said no we wont exchange it but we will send it off, it will be 3-4 weeks and we aren't giving you a loaner, so I said no and they gave me a special receipt and told me to go to any Sprint store and they would replace it....ANOTHER LIE, I went to FOUR stores scattered across Houston until a store even looked at it, I explained the issue and the said ok our tech will replace your screen or we will give you a new one it will be 30 min., ANOTHER LIE, 2 hours and 26 min later I was handed my phone by the tech and told that he had updated me to 2.1 and that my phone was fine, LIE. FIRST of all my screen wouldnt even unlock by touch(had to menu, menu) second I could still not get a proper response from my screen or even touch the T.B., second as soon as I turned the screen on it asked me to DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE, he didnt address the problem that he was told was there, he lied about doing the update, I lost it on this lazy ass, so he took my phone again, had it for under 3 min this time, brought it back and said here I updated it, I cant fix it, I cant give you one from our stock, you will have one in 3-4 days, again no loaner, THE UPDATE WAS STILL NOT EVEN DOWNLOADED, AND ONLY HALF OF MY BATTERY COVER WAS ATTACHED,I AM 376 MILES FROM MY WIFE AND 2 KIDS WITH NO PHONE. So at this point I just want to say, F*@# Sprint and F*@# Best Buy, I pay thousands a year for warrantys and bills, have payed at least the double the retail of my phone just in insurance(between our two lines) and you A$$'s reniged on everything that extra I pay for, when I do get my new one I will be canceling all insurance and warrantys and in 5 months when my contract is up IM GONE, you people have never done anything to honor your customer service agreements and I dont think I have ever heard anyone with a positive experience, SO F*@# YOU!!!! Ok my rant is done, just wanted to say to anyone even considering Sprint, dont do it unless you have the cash to just buy a new phone at full price if anything happens, they will screw you any way possible, been with them for coming up 5 years and they dont give a damn about anyone, RUN AWAY WHILE YOU CAN.
The actions of few almost never speak for the quality and character of All.
I've never had a problem with my service that wasn't resolved within an hour and a half by a sprint representative. I used to have the rumor and I soaked it once(replaced), my mother broke her screen and got it replaced, one time my charger port got so jacked up that they had to give me a new phone and the Rep offered to give me his old phone, ofcourse I said no and thanked him but that shows there are good folk in the company we have been buying service from for the better part of a decade.
I would gladly change my opinion if I ever saw a change in how they handle my wife and I as customers, I have just not seen it... OH, PLEASE tell me what store to go to, seriously, no sarcasm, I will go if its close(houston area), it is just very stressful and insulting to pay what we pay believing that they will hold up their end and being openly lied to...I know that my little flame out does not speak for everyone, it just helps to get it out.....XDA Group Therapy LMAO
I don't think I will ever buy a phone from best buy... If you try and have any warranty service done it seems to be a hassle for must people. Luckily I by my phones directly from sprint and I've never had a problem.

Ok, last update on my situation, I will try not to freak out, I am highly upset.
So, after days with a non-functioning phone, I go to the store and first of all, why does it take 15 min to walk behind the counter and pick up a packaged phone when I am the only customer in the store? OK, so my "New" phone came in, great right, wrong! I take care of my things, I am an adult that likes nice things and cant afford many, so when I get something I want I take extremely good care of it, my Hero was immaculate, spotless, and I have had it since a couple month after release, what they brought me was ****, it has scratches all over the screen(which is funny because he made a big deal asking me if I wanted the "screen plastic" taken off), the back cover has scratches on it, the back cover has a crack in it and is warped to the point that it will not stay on completely and there is a gap between the back cover and the phone, the metal band around the phone is loose, the hardware buttons are lose, I dont know who would call this a new phone but the poor thing has been badly abused, I almost feel bad for this poor Hero. So there it is, my experience yet again with Sprint and best buy. I feel like with the amount of money that I have payed total for "insurance" I should not be given a trashed piece of hardware. Sprint, is not all bad, I personally just have not had a good experience with them. Just be careful people.

HTC First Bricked!

Alright so my gf got this phone as an upgrade from an iPhone 3GS because it was 99 cent and she wanted Android. The phone is completely stock with the facebook features turned off. Last night it wouldn't cut on because she thought it had a dead battery. Upon waking up and checking it this morning, after being on the charger all night, the phone will not boot. The most I can get it to do is boot into HBOOT but it freezes when you select factory reset and it will now load to the FB symbol that comes up when you first cut it on but it freezes there as well. I have found no way to get it to boot up fully.
Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have a way to fix this issue?

First I head of this. Now since you got this for $.99 you must be on a contract. Does ATT have a warranty? I would assume at least 90 days even with no extended warranty, so you can just go into a store and get a new one seeing as the phone came out in mid April.
Being as you can access hboot, I would assume it is a softbrick and that you may be able to flash something if you wish.
Easiest path would be for a replacement

Thanks for the quick response. I was thinking the same thing of taking it back to AT&T to get it replaced. Also, though I am able to get into HBOOT and FASTBOOT, once there the phone only restarts HBOOT if I select BOOTLOADER. As well, I have tried the RUU for the new update but once it tries to reboot the phone to put it into BOOTLOADER it freezes on a black screen and the RUU updater app encounters an error while trying to reboot into BOOTLOADER. The nearest AT&T store is about 15 miles away and I don't really want to have to drive there to get the phone replaced but it is looking more and more like that is my only option because I can't get the phone fixed any other way.

I know the phone only cost you "99 cents" but are you really worried about wasting time and gas driving there? you could make it worth your while:
This phone is worth $450 unlocked. Go to the store and get it replaced ASAP or you'll be sitting on a very fancy 99 cent paper weight or a useless $450 phone, which ever way you want to see it.
Get the phone replaced and sim unlock it from ATT with the instructions in this forum. Sell the phone on Craigslist for $100-350, use that money to get an Atrix 4G/Pantech Burst/ etc, any phone around $100 and keep the $99-$349 profit OR just have a brand new working phone. Either way you see it it's worth the 15 mile drive so don't lag on getting this phone replaced.

Alright so yeah went ahead and drove to the AT&T store only to be told we would need to go to the warranty center if we wanted it replaced. So they called the warranty center, before sending us over there, to see if they had one to give us as replacement but it turns out they didn't even have one there to give us a replacement. So then they told us that the only option now is to call the warranty number and have one mailed out. Meaning my gf now has to wait until Monday at the latest before she will have a working phone. Or they offered to let her PAY for a loaner phone to use until she got a replacement. Needless to say that I am beyond pissed with AT&T and their lack of willing to help a long term customer get her phone replaced without having to jump through hoops and wait days without a phone because of a problem that wasnt even my gf's fault in the first place.

Dang man, that blows but really it's not that bad to wait a few days. Do you have an old sim card phone you can use? You can pick something up on CL for a few dollars to hold you until monday. My side income is selling phones and sometimes I even sell the phone I'm using right now and go back to an old w810i candybar phone I have lying around. Take it as a rude awakening to how dependent we are on smartphones now a days. Just get the phone into the repair center. The sooner you do the sooner you get a working phone back.
