well... mr Gates. Gentlemen from SE. time to leave. bye bye..
oh... btw, if You don't know this device yet:
http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/
according to the engadget show, its a poor device and there is a problem when the touchscreen does not work half the time with the gestures.
well... what do You understand under "poor device"? have You checked the specs for it? have You seen latest videos? (not early prototype) well... iphone 3gs cpu/gpu (600mhz a8 cortex), sliding qwerty, wvga, resistive touch screen, 1gb ram (256+768 virtual), 32gb storage+micro sdhc slot, 5mp camera recording 800x480 videos (25 fps), agps, digital compass, accelerometer, maemo linux system, tv out, irda, bt, wifi, 3g...
well...?
[edit] silly me... I forgot to add- 3.5 audio jack, fm TRANSMITTER, stereo loud speakers, and maybe some more that I don't remember... how cool is that??
[edit2] http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/01/video-nokia-n900-put-through-its-paces-in-italian/ if that's not responsive/fast then I don't know what is...
Nokia are good phones but only on the paper. "It doesnt do what it says on the tin". It never does (remember my 9210i communicator, my last Nokia device)
If you want a phone to be ready out from the box (which, in my opinion, is boring), this kind of stuff is for you. Recently had my friends 5800XM for couple of days..Nightmare!! (try to use calculator in landscape mode ) I have no idea why people love this phone. Good music player??? Maybe..
Nokia dont do "tailored to requirements" phones, they put all things into one device and wait for the customers that dont know how to use it...
i think wm 6.5 will change the way people see wm, i mean the 6.1 and older gui is a real turn off and now the new gui in wm 6.5 is nice, the only one thing 6.5 is missing is a transitional animated interface...the default animation slows the device when activated and its not even pleasant to see
depends on if wm brings more eye candy then i will stay, well thats if apple doesn't release an iphone with a higher resolution and a qwerty keyboard
there is no doubt about it, wm is the most powerful os, its just the current gui makes you feel as tho you are using a pc with windows 98...ironic to see that wm 6.1 still wears the windows 98 look and soo many OS were born that looks great, especially their icons...speaking of icons, i dont get it as to why most of wm icons have that rugged edge look and not smooth edges, M$ really needs to get their act together...i hate to see some of the icons in wm bcos of their ugly look, most look like 8 bit icons
hm... well it's a good point, but I think I've seen enough. I'll leave x1 in the drawer, just in case, and I'll try this whole maemo with widgets. on one hand it is a good thing that You can modify winmo so much, but on the other most of the time spent with the device is wasted with efforts to change the way it looks and works, because it sucks out of the box. saying that, guess what...? I've tried many roms with all funky interfaces just to realise stock rom is most stable and fast (tweaked ofcourse) and the only thing for me was to install spb ms3 to make it look better. I really hate new wm 6.5 looks and titanium is just terrible imho.
what I like in n900 is that interface looks great ootb, strong cpu and gpu gives it a good kick and this damn thing just works. x2 is a major fail comparing to this sweet device. just wait few months... You'll see how is it going to conquer the market.
the specs are good but if u watch the engadget show that they put up a few days ago u will see that they did not like it and that he was doing gestures in front on a live show and it was not working. in the end they have used the device, we have not so i suggest u take there advice. nokia as a company is crumbling and they very rarely make a good phone, even though there is always lots of hype around them. think the n97, there flagship device.

The new HTC Leo does this and the cpu is 1GHz. the RAM of the nokia is 768mb virtual RAM? 5MP cam?? thats so 2009! FM transmitter is the only new 'gadget' on that. Oh 32GB sdhc cards will be out soon so that wouldnt be a seling point for me.
Didnt you know you cant big up Nokias on a HTC fanboy forum!
lol... ok guys. I'll better stfu now I guess I am the only one sooo in to something new.
leo? well... snapdragon doesn't convince me a lot. less than a8 cortex with powervr combo. the other thing is that leo doesn't have qwerty keys, so a deal breaker for me... I am trying to find a good alternative for winmo as well.
oh well... let's wait for official reviews, then I shall decide finally.
Sounds nice, but then again the X1 sounded nice and look where that go us. Also its Nokia, and Nokia dont do nice interface, Nokia interface is always ugly and not very appealing. This would have been amazing if it were samsung or LG or SE

Yes, sad but very true.
Just wait for the Touch Pro3 and SPB MS4. How's that sound?
well ... you forgot to mention smth when you listed the cool features
weight 181 g
hmm and it doesnt seem to have any physical control key ...
design: like a brick ... my opinion ...
and i dont have experiences with this OS
in my opinion omnia pro and x2 are the best at the mom.... for the business and also multimedia guy.
well... You have arrow keys on hard keys, also the way it looks is more... hm... cool? at least less gay than tp2 imho. I am fed up with all those round shapes and chrome finishes.
anyway... I'll get it and if it's gonna suck, I'll give it back or it will land on ebay. ... but something tells me, that it is going to be a first wide popular maemo device. it's like icrap 3gs with **** loads of hardware added and complex, linux based system on board. I am almost convinced.... 97%
Too brickish, I'll stick to my X1 for now. An upgrade for me would be with same form factor, bigger screen, lighter, thinner and faster.

Totally agreed,,, the design of this phone looks as crap as all nokia phone are & I bet the UI will be as UGLY, as annoying & as un-friendly as nokia have always been making... With good specs a phone should look fantastic as well like X1, TD2, TPro etc (not like this thick-brick)... No offence to Bronx or any one...
Edit: I should mention an edge that it has over X1 & TD2 etc... if you have a problem or fight occassionally THIS CAN BE USED AS A heavy WEAPON...
you know what they say: a pint and a fight - perfect British night. ok, maybe it looks more plastic than x1, but more likely it's gonna be build bit better than ever cracking xperia.
look people - I am not trying to convince anyone. I just want to point out another alternative to SE, HTC, WM, iPhone... all those companies have failed to provide solid product, so it is time for me to try something else. I loved my n70, I loved my n95 8gb. now I dare to say f... WM. I'll roam in here from time to time, as x1 stays with me, but in october I am trying something new, because of SE assholes. come on... after all this crap with x1 they should give us more support to wash that bad taste they left.
x1 is quite good device, but I won't forgive them cracks, ****ty video playback and lack of further software support.
[EDIT] btw - n900 110.9 × 59.8 × 18 (19.55 at thickest part) mm, xperia x1 110.5 x 52.6 x 17 mm - well? just a bit wider and a tad thicker. looks neat and tidy no matter what You guys say

samsung or LG or SE ??????????
Dude samsung has only crappy phones ( yes good fast hardware but they miss buttons.. ok omnia qerty might be interesting .. )
LG is worst.. ( after i saw lg arena.. lol )
Perhaps n900 will get uber perhaps nokia ****s up
yeah... we shall see.
i would have bought this about a year ago to replace my n770.
i was interested in it till i saw the specs..... but the biggest turn off for me is the cpu, ram and no portrait mode.
maybe i could live with the cpu if the ram was much larger, i could care less about the virtual ram but it would have been a nice supplement to a larger ram anyways.
i could also live with the no portrait mode because i know the maemo group has some pretty good developers but why wait when it should have came out that way from the factory.
for me, phone is a year too late and ill stick to the x1 for now because no other phone is worth the upgrade right now

I don't get it. Why so many people want to make their WM phones looks like iPhone?
When directly compare WM phones and iPhone (let's leave Linux, Symbian, Palm and Blackberry out of this for now), the majority of serious Smart Phone/ PDA Phone users out there would say WM is better, can do more. So, what is the idea of making WM phones look and act like iPhone. Don't get me wrong, All the developers in this forum making software such as Slide2Unlock and iContact are great, they have proved the superiority of WM phone.
I like my WM phone, it is great. And, I will never make it looks like iPhone. For you people want to make your WM looks like iPhone, why don't you just go get an iPhone and stop make people say WM phone is poor men's alternative to iPhone. I'd say iPhone is the dumb people's alternative to WM phone.
That is very true. the iphone is the dumb people phone, but it is still a very very neat phone. I will eventually end up getting one just because of the wow and neat factor. One thing also is that it is good that apple released a phone like this because now a benchmark is set and i know over time htc will exceed that mark with great products. I love my pocket pc's and will not give it up for an iphone. But we must also admit that it is a neat phone to mess around with.

You are absolutly right. I don't understand them too, and i love my Windows Mobile phone and my usefull today screen. Its funny to read that, because yesterday i wrote an blog-entry about that ;-)
I tend to agree. Apple have got great marketing though - You cannot deny them that. It's shiny, got whistles and bells and i-tunes. Of course people are going to buy it.
I'll stick with my wm device though. Sure I have to overclock the little sucker to get it to operate at a reasonable pace, but I can do with it as I please. I've learnt a lot about my device, software, registry etc . . . How are you gonna get that experience from an i_phone?? (it depends what you want out of a phone i suppose)
I think it may well be like the first time I got my hands on a N95. I was going to get one. . . . then ten minutes later the novelty had worn off (and the battery was pretty worn out too and I resigned myself to the fact that I like my wm5.
I think the i_phone craze is here for now, but a few months after launch here (and Europe) and the honeymoon period will be over and it will just be the latest phone, only to be shortly superceded by the 'next big thing'.
Respect to the people making some of the apps that appear on the i_phone OS and sorting them for wm use. That gives our community even more potential for their devices. Without the developers our wm devices would be no better than all the other phones out there.
i_phone, love it or hate it, you can't deny it's going to eclipse all other mobile releases for some time.
(I think I am going to go and dig out my old 5110, that'll show them in the office tomorrow!)
Rant over.
I disagree.
It's not for many people a matter of good or bad design, it's a competition.
How perfect can we simulate iPhone-Apps, how perfect can we design the UI.
That are the interesting things for many of us.
The same story as Windows Vista arrived. How many of us had before "green gras" as TodayScreen, because it's so beautiful?
No, it's a battle of ideas, a competition. For many users...
which is more towards status symbol
iphone or Jasjam?

Because we all know that WM phones are FAR superior in terms of tech specs and features to the iphone, but are inferior in terms of an interface/eye candy.
So we want the best of both worlds. An iPhone interface on a powerful WM phone.
Is that really such a bad thing?
"iphone or Jasjam?"
dont think status symbols are that general
i mean if you ask really rich people
something like this
http://www.shinyshiny.tv/2007/06/gold_and_diamon.html
would be a status symbol
if you ask a evil genius a vulcano island with henchmen in stick spandex uniforms maybe more soo
if pda nut Jasjam
if your a fasion statement phone user maybe iphone..
There's only one reason iPhone is so popular: marketing. iPhone even has been an item on the the 8o clock news on television (netherlands). Was HTC's P3300 on the news? NO, but it can do 10x more things than the iphone can! It has GPS, word, push email etc. etc.
Publicity makes publicity: the iphone is so populair because it is so populair. In short: this is a hype. Just like the iPod is a hype. Before there was the iPod, there were dozens of MP3 players who could all the things the iPod could do years later. Many people THINK the iPod is something special and can do things no other device can do: for example, the term 'Podcasting'. The 'Pod' suggests it can only can be done on a iPod, so n00bs buy a iPod to play podcasts.
It's just marketing that does the trick, the more people talk about it, the more people want it.
Nonetheless, the iPhone looks very good. The build quality is very good and the device is easy to understand. And important: its stable. WM5 isn't very stable and difficult to operate. My sister who's 23 isn't able to use my phone, too complicated she says wm5 is for (semi)nerds

iPhone interface is not superior at all. There are tons launcher apps, today plug-ins for WM out there that can do much better, and many of them are freewares. What I don't get is that most people putting iPhone look alike interface on their WM phones for a simple reason: making other think they have iPhones. I really feel sorry for those people.
I always think WM phones users are intelligent people, but many among us are doing dumb thing to degrade oneself.
Yesterday was a very good day for me. A couple co-workers were showing off their brand new iPhones. After making comparisons to my 8-month-old WM phone. They became the joke of the office and one actually returned the iPhone back and placed an order for a WM phone.
The fun thing is that the only way your average WM device has better specs than the iPhone is that many of them support 3G now.
The iPhone has a 614MHz processor and some serious video horsepower as well. The limitations of the iPhone lie almost wholly in the virtual keyboard and the 3rd-party dev lockout -- both of which are artifacts of software.

It's not necessarily that people want to make their WM phone look like an iPhone, but more that there is a real desire for a fingertip interface for WM devices.
iphone is glossy. It catches the eye. It has a fun UI to play with. WM is more customizable. Alot more programs to use and have fun with. But seriously, which UI seems more fun to play with? I want to just play with an IPhone for a few days. I know after day 2 or 3, than I would care less what phone I have. Just like my MDA. Why else do I keep reflashing and resetting it up? so I don't get bored of it. LOL!
I think the iPhone has got a fancy interface but it hasn't got the features of WM and it has got a real cool factor but in useability it is WM every time.
imho then
wm vs. iphone
is much like
pc vs. console
1 is very spc'd to do what it was made to do
and not possible to customize much
it's fancy and makes people look and works out of the box
the other is very customizeable and got piles of software
one can make ones own software jack of all trades master of non
support addon hardware and is allways revolving
got a steeper learning curve and can scare n00bs away
imho it's a pretty fair comparison
Reminds me of those pity skinners that love to skin their Winblows machine as a mac (which looks f*gly anyway).
I have to agree with the thread starter. There is no point making your phone look an iPhone. Trust me , it sucks and its a waste of resources and time (It hogs up the System RAM). So for me , I'll stick with the current WM UI (Although I f***ing hate WM ..don't get me wrong guys...But I have no choice but to go with WM Devices as Palm is still left behind in the 20th Century world and Symbian isn't a OS at all [Its a joke])
When you come and think about it , sure WM devices beats hands off. But then will you get the cool X-factor (that is the superb UI and design + the OS of the iPhone - no)
Summary :-
If you want a True Smartphone/PDA Phone - WM Device
If you want a fashion gadget + MP3 Player - iPhone
If you want a phone - Nokia 3310
wm5 ..the one...& iPhone..
eii
i´m a wm lover, and you now why?? just because y can look to iphone and say,,,,ei man, this application is soo good, the work in iphone is in another direction..more user friendly play groud intertainement...and you ask!! soo..why do you like wm...just simple..because if i like some application on wm...i just install them on my wm5 device...and unisntall if i need...that´s simple..soo simple...wm5 is the one...iphone is very good job...soo if i ant ...just install..he..he...is a small part os wm5

i totally agree with you, another comparison:
i have a creative zen vision m, all my friends ask me why not buy a ipod and sometimes they make comparision jokes about my mp4 player. But this creative vision has far more specs, it has customized menus and a far more beautiful screen, the only thing it hasnt is the scroll wheel, but who cares.
As Pumba here just said its what people know, they will buy, i bet that after the launch of the iphone there will be many people who never heard about WM but of the iphone yes!
I like the iphone only for its design, im only 16 so im still into all that fashion stuff, so i try to get my WM as sexy as the iphone, enough said?
thank you

Note: Anyone who votes and replies, can you please post the current result of the poll in your reply as well. (so that people who don't have the mobile in their hands yet - like me - and can't actually vote in the poll can see the results too...)
So... you've got an Xperia, eh? You lucky dog!
I bought mine the Friday before last - i.e. on the 25th, and am still waiting delivery. So while i wait, i thought i'd ask from you - the proud (or not) owners of Xperia... "In a nutshell - Are you Satisfied with your Xperia?"
If you are the owners of or have owned Touch Pro prior to Xperia, then cast your vote here as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441550
Leave comments if you want.

Yes I am satisfied.
the best smartphone on the planet right now
Hell yes, definately the best phone ive had! Looks good, well made, couple of minor issues but nothing major. Ask me again in 6 months
is Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and is too bad because now everyone will know that sonyericsson is really the best.
Despite the initial dissapointment with panels I am very happy. I use the SPB panel for everything and occassionally trot the others out for showing off (fish, music & movies) or a quick google search.
For me the keyboard is nice with easy to access shortcuts and everything works like it should. There are some incompatibilities with my favorite software (S2U2 barely works and is overridden by both panels and sliding out the keyboard) but other than that it runs as fast (touch pro) or faster than any other WM ppc I have ever used!
Phone Signal - Strong
Internet access - Very Quick
GPS - Fast (especially with Quick GPS)
Wifi - Strong
Keyboard - No Lag
Battery Life - 2 1/2 days of medium to heavy abuse on a full charge
4 1/2 Stars (Lose 1/2 for panels)
Took my touch pro back due to the GPS lag and changed for the x1 cause I was still within my 14-day period.
Must admit, it was a great decision. I agree with the statement made above, the panels are a little disappointing but im sure things will improve as more panels are developed.
Besides, we should be able to port TF3D and get the best of both worlds.
No GPS lag, Windows seems snappier navagating through the menu's and the phone feels a lot more solid than the pro.
Current voting is 19 - 1

TF3D is already ported
And ofc it's 19 - 1, it's in the Xperia forum after all, if you start it in the TP forum it'll be 19-1 for TP
Very Satisified. It's all I was hoping for. Keyboard is really good and had a fun day today showing my friend everything practically (GPS, Web, Email etc.) all very smoothly. Suffice it to say that she wanted it as well but ain't due for an upgarde until June next year
Still waiting to get mine, will be interested to see how it compares with my Touch Pro (which will probably get the heave-ho once the Xperia arrives I suspect).
Pure ****..
I really regret bying my X1,it is slow incredible buggy and even my Nokia E90 it was ment to replace has more to offer then this hyped "superphone".. Worst of all is the reception whish is far below average and driving me mad, X1 vs stonewall is the most likely ending to this,,,,,soon,,,next time it just lying there looking stupid searching for signal,,, whamm..
nice looking and probably a solid build other then that..

Can you share some of the bugs?
its okay. but not e real milestone.
my x1 is very heavy!its weight is nearly 160 gramms. it feel like a brick.
but it looks impressive. and the display is bigger. but thats all.
the more of ram is okay, but not really feelable.
i miss stereo speakers
hardware video encoder for 640x480 @30 frames
(the videocapture suxx completely!!very blocky and a lot of loss frames!)
answering machine capabillitys. (it`s the same on all windows phones)
tv out????
menus not fast enough. (with tweaked caches too)
where is the g-sensor/motion sensor gone????? the raphael has got one.
its not really better than my htc diamond.
okay, the keyboard its the most important feature, but the phone
FEELS the double of size and weight. so i can wear a mini blutetooth
keyboard in addition to a diamond. thats cheaper.
(its not really the double weight/size, but it feels so!)
the most missing features are realised in the good old nokia n95, years ago.
why can`t htc implement this features? why sony ericsson will use
the f*cking htc cam. in view of the good name of cybershot products,
they lose a lot of reputation.
for 650 bucks, i hoped to become 'the top phone' on market.
but its just a htc rapahael (diamond with keyboard), in y new case
with 2 keyboard keys more, they named one of it X-panel-key. xpanel is just a software,
i can install to any windows phone, and use the button remap tool
and use x-panel by pressing long end of call key.
Don't miss my Kaiser at all...actually don't even know where I put it.
There are some little things with the X1 that could be better but overall this is the best phone I've ever used (and I've used a lot).
The most frustrating thing about owning this phone is how much sleep i'm missing because i'm playing with the damn thing so much
I love it.

i miss a "yes, but..."-button in the poll.
i am satisfied with my x1, but there are some problems with it.
1. bluetooth turns off randomly
2. optical joystic turns on ramdomly
3. when i install tf3d the x1 gets very unstable and crashes after 2-3 panel changes (even after multiple softresets)
you can share my problems? or you have already solutions to this probs?
thanks & greetz

Very happy with the phone haven't had any bugs yet.
However O2 have fiddled with the rom and this has left me with a couple of niggles i.e no google panels and no bluetooth FTP function.

There's always some noob and dumb ass w/ no idea what they are doing.
My x1 is rock solid so far compare to all my previously owned phone so far.
only problems i have arent the X1 at fault.
1. poor reception. its O2 as its fine with my old tmobile sim,
2. opera has issues, but its known to be a beta i believe and a last minute additin to the X1.
technically theres a third, no multitasking the radio but im not too fussed.
Guys, I need your input... please convince me whatever you want to convince me.
don't do it bro.
I think it's VERY VERY VERY STUPID! it's the same phone, and I don't see the TP2 have any advantage over the X1, besides bigger screen... better to wait for the X2 (pray to god the X2 have better CPU)
stay with the X1...
i heard the tp2 video framerate is much lower than the x1 as well, the best thing to do is ask members in the rhodium forum questions and compare them to your experiences with the x1
ait for the x2 man. It will have better cpu (i hope), Better battery life. X1 was just a test and now the test is complete they will give us X2 "god is shining his light upon the X2" hallaluja

I can't get the X2 because it will be very expensive for me. Touch Pro 2 is surprisingly cheap compared to the X1a [i don't use 3G anyway, i shud have paid for the x1i version]
I want the TP2 because the music and conversation speaker + mix is almost hi-fi.
The screen is big.
And the keyboard is delicious.
The main reasons I don't want to switch is because of the Sony Ericsson Media Panel and the 3.5 mm jack.
I am also planning on selling my X1 and saving it for a future phone.
Well, if there were ppl who called the X1 a brick, I really wonder what they'd say to your Touch Pro 2.
Keep your X1 man. Do you have an X1a? R4A firmware is coming out and I heard it's gonna be a kick ass ROM.

Where did you get that info?
i would get it, or at least im considering it. i would like a bigger screeen. i also read somewhere that they maybe making one for att but that wont be till the end of the year.
You might as well hold out for a snapdragon phone.
That would be a lateral move. There's really no point. And besides, who wants a bigger phone with the same functionality these days?
You would be much better off holding off until at least one of these options
a. Tegra/Snapdragon
b. phones released with winmo 6.5 stock
c. phones released with winmo 7

I totally agree with this you. Omnia Pro is better than X1 in many ways, and TP2 has bigger display, only that.
Go for it! And tell us your opinion after switching X1 to TP2.

Hardware is almost the same
TP2 pros:
bigger screen.
Xperia pros:
3.5mm headphone jack.
More RAM available.
Has camera flash.
D-pad (almost all games require one, or are played better with one. It is useful and a necessity).
Xperia looks better, feels better in the hand and is more useful. Your choice....
I am amused. How HTC can not include flash in a 3mp phone like touch pro 2. The phone is a sure shot but how can they even think of missing on the flash.
dont do it..just use tf3d and some of my mods..
go for it...x1 is one very good smartphone, but misses badly on essentialz:
bigger touch screen and windows mobile (and panels) being adjusted for touch input.
got my x1 just a week ago...played around, got used to it, installed all the programs i wanted...and came to conclusion that the touch screen is just toooo small and on the brink to be anoying...still functional, but...very BIG but...
whatever you get must have solid big touch screen...important for web-browsing,gps-ing, everything...size of new iPhone is just right...
...maybe x2 or x3 will sort out this few (big) mistakes of this great phone.

Apple whoring much?
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone
I have noticed you can now pick up an X1 for as little as £330 on Amazon UK and I was looking for a cheapish secondary phone that would be could for web browsing & e mail. As well as using as a modem for a Mac laptop.
Is the X1 a good choice for something like this, how is the build quality & UI speed.
Being a noob to WM how is it to get along with on the X1 with the panels etc.
Is there any software that can be installed that helps usability?
It seems to be a good deal cheaper than the price of Touch HD is, even after all this time.
Wel not every phone is perfect.
if you get a x1 i suggest to flash a custom rom wm6.5 that will speed up the device. i think the x1 is a great phone its not to big and comes with a keyboard. the specs are almost the same as TP2. the Tp2 has a bigger screen and speaker.
but if you want a phone thats not to big and has a keyboard than the x1 would be a great choice. i don't know how it works with mac(i'm a linux user). you can find so many software here to make you x1 like you want to. there are so many different UI that you can use. like: TouchFlo3D, PointUI and SPB.
I'm using wm6.5 now for a long time and i must say its fast enough for me.
I hope this helped you.
I have been using it for around few months now and my opinion is I'd look at different phones.
Altho this is one of the most feature packed phone at the moment there are few downsides which are quite critical in terms of usability as a phone.
1. Windows OS not stable enough unless you are keen to soft reset every other day. I soft reset mine every couple of days.
2. Weak reception, compare to my Nokia E71.
3. Lose of reception when you held the phone for a while. Work around to this is getting a silicon case for the phone or apply screen protector at the back of the device, especially the battery cover. I wish there were aftermarket optiosn available such as carbon fiber casing/battery cover. It would cured the problem and make the device much lighter.
4. Battery drain problem once you start use shell/launcher such as SPB mobile shell and Winterface. Battery is fine till 30 percent or so then strangely empties quick overnight from there.
5. Scree lock software increases stability issues. I have used pocket shield and S2U2 ended up removing both due to stability problems.
6. Keyboard is not very well designed. Not the layout but the feedback from pressing buttons. It's kinda mush and not very tactile.
7. "Up" on Dpad is hard to press. and volume button is too small to operate especially when you have case on the phone.
8. Slow web browser. Both IE and Opera mobile is slow compare to Nokia's symbian web browser.
I'm using latest official firmware and tried many custom firmware/winmo 6.5 etc. I think touch flo 3d is the most stable custom launcher you can get for it, although I much prefer winterface launcher.
I have been trying to use this phone for work and I learned that you simply cannot rely on it as relibility suffers thanks to winmo OS. It's fine for personal phone but I wouldn't use it for a work phone.
In my opinion, it's perfect if you are looking for "mostly PDA but occasionally phone" device. If you are after phone first and PDA second, look into Noka N97 or E series. Nokia makes very reliable phones. Or look into HTC Dream/Hero/Android OS devices. I myself thinking of changing my phone to HTC Android OS phones atm. (if only N97 wasn't so expensive around here. darn it.)
Sure worth a 'TRY'. hehe

choose a OS so that can do all your jobs. i'm using wm because i use navigation on my phone(tomtom) and for me thats the best. read reviews of phones. there are always downsides with every phone i always say it there is no perfect phone or OS. every OS has its own problems. if you don't relay on software that run on OS i prefer you to buy a android phone htc hero. but if you wan't a phone with keyboard i suggest xperia because its not to big.
I'd suggest you go for the touch pro 2, since you are new to winmo. It has a larger screen, hardware keyboard is great to use and is a bit more recent than the xperia.
Switching to winmo gives a lot of benefits, especially when you have a HTC device. You can change roms and try out different flavours etcetera. Install applications without jailbraiking or whatsoever. Get use to the tf3d, wich is a pretty neat home screen. Ofcourse, nothing beats the gaming capabilities of an iphone right now, but i do think that there are advantages on windows mobile.

1 - I soft reset EVERY phone at least once a day. Depends on usage not on stability.
2 - Not true.
3 - Not true.
4 - Don't use shells then lmao.
5 - That is those apps' fault, not a problem with the phone or WinMo. lol at this btw.
6 - That is totally your own opinion. Most of the users fund the keyboard amazing. There is only one keyboard that gives better experience than the X1's and that's TP2's keyboard.
7 - True about the "up" button, but the volume keys are fine. If they were bigger, you would have complained about how huge they are lol.
8 - Biggest lie ever. Maybe you failed to mention that the Symbian browser is crap? Try SkyFire or Opera (for real this time).
I don't like TF3D and I'm using the official R3A ROM. Everything is perfect.
The phone is good for work.
LOL @ the phones you mentioned and especially ROFL @ the N97, which is the biggest fail in the known universe.

yup I agree with you. there is no perfect OS. It's all comes down to personal preference. My statement was merely coming from my experience and how I felt about the product.
You don't have to criticise my comment. It's just how I felt from my own experience and those were issues when I used it.
Like I said before xperia is the most feature packed phone you can get. It has the screen resolution with physical qwerty keyboard, excellent built quality, GPS, camera with flash and all those other phones can't match. But at the end of the day, it comes down to the end user and usability.
My complain about battery life is not about actual overall battery life. If you read my comment again, it was fine till around 30% then quickly drains after that. Don't get all defensive and say "Don't buy winmo device if you expect battery life." You have completely missed my point. Everyone who have experience with winmo phones know what it can do and what it can't. I was simply pointing those out.
Yes I'm using winmo 6.5 custom rom and I found I actually gain reception quality and battery life with it over previous 6.1 rom I used, but it seems sacrificing stability. The point is, winmo needs a lot of tweak to get the basic phone part working reliably and lag free like other phones like Nokia symbian platform does out of box. But then winmo has a lot more room for customisation and that's where its strength came from. That's what I mean by "PDA first, phone second."
Reception quality is fine, but worse compare to my E71 and HTC Touch HD. I compared both at home and where E71 and HTC Touch HD picked up the signal, Xperia failed. I live around hills. Reception isn't very good around here.
Funny enough I don't use or install anything but bare minimum. I use builtin notepad, builtin calender and builtin contact. Probably only aftermarket software I use is Garmin/Tomtom Nav software and Winterface. Nothing else.
I still find the Nokia web broswer faster than any version of Opera(except mini but that's different story) for winmo phones, especially over GSM network.(HSDPA) But then Nokia web browser struggle to view heavy loaded websites where winmo devices can. So all about up and downside. For general website I usually visit, I found Nokia web browser gets the job done faster and easier. Also when I installed Opera mini on my E71, I could view websites with flash manu, somewhat limited, but made it possible. I couldn't do this on any winmo devices.
I have exact same case you have linked and suprised you have found happy with it. It's pure junk in my opinion and its getting dust in my drawer. I just found such case doesn't do its beautiful device a justice. Adds too much bulk and doesn't really protect the phone as it's way to easy to take them off. Also finish wasn't great out of box. I had to file few spots to smooth moulding lines. Xperia is not a slim device and having cases just adds too much bulk on it. Exceeding to my preference.
At end of the day, it's all about your priority. If you like customising phones then xperia is definitely a nice choice. I prefer it over HTC touch HD anyday. But if you want the pda phone you can rely on and works everytime without fail and but with limited customisation, then defnitely consider Nokia symbian phones. I'm quite tempted for Android OS phones at the moment. I just wish M$ did their work and improve windows mobile OS rather than making it heavier with eye candy crap.

imho x1 is the best winmo device at the moment. maybe tp2 is more feature packed, but xperia looks better, size-wise it's amazing, it is fast and stable on r3a stock rom, pictures captured with it can be compared to normal digital cameras and the keyboard layout is made for fast texting/emailing. for me it is just perfect.

I think when speaking of user friendlynes, the touch pro 2 can be that. I mean, you are talking about advantages of the d-pad, sure, there are some, though i don't have chubby fingers, d-pad on xperia is sometimes a horrible design mistake. left and right d-pad is ok, but up and down, you can't hardly press it without pressing on the optical pad. what's the use of an optical pad anyway, i hardly use it, only for up and down for the forementioned problems with keypad. i don't use it for scolling webpages since opera, and in fact, the whole OS, is already using kinnetic scrolling.
no flash on tp2. Yeah, like having a led flashlight really makes a difference, but the vga recording @ 30fps is a nice addition to xperia though, if only it would not capture to 3gp format, cmon, 3gp in twothousand and f*cking nine?
Every phone has it flaws orelsi. Xperia is also not perfect, especially not if you were buying it for the hardware qwerty and the so called arctic slide, nothing special about that either.
But I agree, sometimes your posts can be rude, as i have notice myself before.
As i know the thread starter from mobile-review and he happens to have an iphone, i suggested him a device equally matches the screen size at least. Because the 16:9 aspect ratio of the xperia doesn't make it per se a better user experience.
Anyway, i hope we can help the topic starter for his quest for a good winmo phone.
ohh, and possibly most anoying is the recessed screen, where the tp2 is flushed.
trust me. having a flash is making a difference. the one in xperia is strong enough and even low light pictures are quite nice quality. it is true about not so great quality of videos though.
arc (not arctic ) slider is a very nice feature. previously I had tytn 2 and tilted screen was less neat. on the other hand, flush screen on tp2 is better.
d-pad is not the bestest one, but tbh one can get used to it and it's better to have one rather than have none. optical joystick is also great for precise operation.
so.... x1 have it's flaws, but for many of us it's a weapon of choice. no other device have those looks with all this greatness inside with it's compact form factor.

If you aren't satisfied with the 'up" and "down" keys and aren't using the optical pad, then turn of the optical one and be happy with the hardware d-pad.
I use the optical scrolling all the time for browsing, scrolling through menus and most importantly through e-books.
Also, there are many games and some apps that require a D-Pad. Better to have one is what I say.

It is not a small difference. It is especially noticeable in dark places. The TP2 won't be able to make a pic, while the X1 will take one. Now, you tell me what's better - to have a certain (arguably not perfect) ability or to have no ability at all?

Yeah, if they make the perfect one, who would bother buying their next device haha. That's why the X1 lacks an accelerometer.
Thanks all for the feedback it was very helpful.
In it's bare-bones state, in other-words without altering the ROM or putting other UI's on it how do the panels perform, are they more of a gimmick than an actual useful addition.
I have heard that the X1 UI is less customised than something like the TP2 & you encounter raw WM6.1 more often & with the screen/font size that it can be tricky to use without applying the stylus?
there is mobile shell from spb, i don't use it though, but it also can keep you away from the inner wm6.1 ui, for a while though. check spb's website about it, it's free for xperia, as a panel, so decide wich panel suits your time of the day
The X1 rocks! I got mine a few days ago and simply love it!
The stock software isn't too awesome, though, and the up button of the D-Pad is hard to press (but I don't use it anyway since the optical joystick works beautifully). Personally I like the keyboard feel, not too mushy for my taste. No G-sensor, but I find them irritating anyway (again, just a personal preference). In all other regards the hardware is fantastic. Fast and small, great display, full qwerty, optical d-pad, Wi-Fi, gps with a-gps support, etc..
I have flashed a few ROMs (6.5 and 6.1) and am very happy with Smaberg's Touch X 10.1 EXTREME final ROM (WinMo 6.1, Touch Flo 3d - not sure which version, but it is smooth and touch-friendly). Stable and very fast. Makes for a much better experience than stock and smoother than all the 6.5 ROMs I have tried. It's been around a while and there is good support in the ROM thread. Don't have to delve too deep into 6.1 guts, interface is great.
My advice? Definitely buy one and flash it with the Touch X ROM.

I had to reboot my Nokia E90 every few days, it also took about 10% of battery to get the thing to a usable state after reboot too, hence why i had a second battery for it.
They also broke the BT functionality with their official flashed OS. It made it unreliable to boot.
This is why I'm here and have an X1 in my hand. If its going to be unreliable, I'd rather have a smaller, lighter, more configurable device.
i won't go on to say it is perfect, as it isn't. The E90 was built like a tank, went swimming several times and was dropped on an almost weekly basis, but still worked.
The X1 I have has been dropped and has been swimming, and it still works, but the case has cracked

The camera is enough for snapshots and the gps is great - no compare with n95 this one has a crapy gps... so there's a lot of + and - it depents on what you personally need. if i could find "my rom" so it is the perfect phone for me because i don't listen too much to music but i want an rds radio a tmc and a good gps device so the nokia couldn't give me that ... Maybe the samsung omnia hd is an alternative one but rember it very depending on which rom u are using - hop it helped...
Did you guys check the HTC site lately?
They have released the specs of HTC Touch HD2
http://www.htc.com/www/product/hd2/specification.html
which seem pretty impressive...
I for one, will make the change to Snapdragon (MUAHAHAHA)...what about you guys?
What's your take on this?
Cheers
Looks really good. The problem may be wm6.5. Hopefully it is going to come with a guaranted upgrade to wm7.
X3 of course has a chance against it imo. Android is improving consequently and the phone will be build directly by SE (or not?). Specs are fantastic.
Well, they still have a chance for one simple reason - the HD2 doesn't have a HW keyboard. That aside the HD2 owns them in every aspect.
I'm going for the first WM6.5 based HTC phone which has both keyboard and Snapdragon - it'll be a blast!
its the hw keyboard that will help the x2 to sale, also it looks a lot better than the current snapdragon devices (htc hd2 and toshiba tg01)
i am keeping ma X1 till new device pup up with:
hw keyboard+snapdragon or tegra+4 way direction pad(why the hell there are taking out 4 way directonpad from new devices?)+5 mpx or more and at least 1500 mAh battery.
i will pass leo too
All that processing power and specs mean nothing without a d-pad and a hw keyboard. If they add those to the Leo, it would be the best device in history, if not, just another phone with good specs, but bad design.
People need good control over their devices in order to do a good job at anything. Hw keyboard and a d-pad are a must.

That was the reason why X1 was my choice,
now X2 looks like the only one retaining all those necessary things.
So in the end I rather forget Snapdragon and have usable device,
than all-touch screen beast which would drive me crazy.
I really say - onscreen keyboard is my "hate".
Don't imagine any serious writing with it.

I agree, I'm ready to give up my Omnia and get a phone w/ a real sliding KB. Unfortunately, there aren't many that are ATT 3G! I've even thought of the Nokia N97!!! shudder...
Yes, HD2 owns over x2, x3 and even x4 and x5. why??? XDA Support, that's why.
but not having a hardware keyboard is indeed a miss, since i got used to the kb of tp2 wich feels so much better and so is making typing fun again..... but....
I'll wait for tp3, wich hopefully comes with same specs as HD2, maybe with only 4"screen, whatever.
I doubt that wm7 will be out untill q4 next year
judging how many of the devices from last year got
wm6.5 updates I would not hold my breath for a wm7 update
for any wm6.5 device you buy now

I agree with the last two paragraphs, but what's the point of buying the same device again? X2 has no improvements + it is ... ugly!
Your second paragraph is spot on. I already have a usable device - X1. i won't upgrade until a similar product with better and up-to-date hardware comes out. X2 is not that product IMHO, so I'll wait for Leo Pro or TP3 lolz.
Indeed....the X1 was my choice over the HD because it had a keyboard and over TP2 because it looked better in my opinion.
On the other hand I sorta have stopped typing much on my X1 (Maybe because of X1's poor quality keyboard. I remember typing WAY faster on my old P1i) and this is why I'd be tempted to go towards the HD2. I can just imagine watching normal xvids with no skips on that beautiful 4.3" screen...
unfortunately.. X1 was my reason why i left for touch hd.
my h/w keyboard had double tapping... no one at service centre cares .. etc etc etc..
can someone give me a summary what the X2 is all about?

i too agree. no point in upgrading because its not really an upgrade other than having a slightly bigger screen

Sure, everyones choice.
I will be really happy with even better keyb, much better camera,
WM 6.5 and improved UI/Panels.
These things are not minor for me....
And that also matters - I find X2 better looking than X1.....
Finally still nothing on market what would really convince me!

its only worth getting the x2 if i can get it as a free replacement as its got the same or better hardware so there is no lose in getting a x2.
but u are right in the sense that its not worth buying if u own a x1.
It's screen so big..
How to use without d-pad huh? Many games need it!

i have noticed that the newer games from spb and astraware are more touchscreen friendly games (iphone like games) and i think most phone companies see that as the future and dont think many of the newer games will be made with stylus or dpad in mind.
but it does not help with games already out that need the dpad.

I have noticed that as well and it is pathetic. Everyone knows that mobile gaming without a d-pad is impossible and annoying at best. You either need to tilt you head along with the phone or have half the screen obscured by controls and your fingers.
Let's hope they will come to their senses...
I will never buy a phone without a hw keyboard or wiothout a d-pad...

Personal opinion. I have both on the X1 and use neither.
For the minority who need a keyboard then sure, the X2 might do alright particularly for business users. but would business users, like me, need a d-pad? Especially for gaming? I doubt it.
