This looks promising! I can't wait till the devs get a hold of this one!

Imo this blows MotoBlur and Sense UI out of the water. Looks great and much more efficient than the standad launcher. I hope addons will be vailable in the market to add new notifications for things like facebook. I think I'm more excited about this than flash..
it does seem promising but will it run better and/or as well than the standard Sense UI or the MotoBlur?
This looks very, very trick.
And you posted this in development why?
But I do like that interface idea. WinMo 6.5 anyone?
Was just about to post this loool, lucky i searched to see if i was the only one with the news.
Looks awesome, if someone ports this etc.. it will be great.

I agree, for me if I wanted a homescreen like that I would just stick to WinMo. Well, probably don't want the thing crashing on me so I wouldn't go with WinBlows. Hehe, but I assume some people find it more useable, wouldn't it be better as a full-screen widget of some sort? that way you could still use the multiple home screens, just have the larva labs one on the main screen... hmmm
Looks interesting. I'm waiting for it.
On the other hand, this is an app, not a ROM development deal, so I moved the thread.
So essentially this is just a double-ended windowshade? Drag down to see notifications and up to see widgets? I still prefer the standard setup where notifications remain in the minimized windowshade until it's dragged down. It also seems this would make it more cumbersome to launch apps.
IMO Larva Labs should stick to making games.

As a widget you wouldn't be able to drag, as it would drag the widget itself, so it would have to use buttons instead...
I'm not impressed.
HOWEVER, I am conducting beta testing/bug detection for SweeterHome.
WOW! should you see some of the features that SH will be coming out with!
I can't wait till it is finalized! It's working great right now - but, there are several more features that are being developed and some final tweaks that have to be made.
This program has a cool concept... But, I still want to be able to see my wallpaper, my widgets, etc.
This app is just too plain vanilla.
Wouldnt this be a good idea if it just took up one screen, instead of being the only one? That way people could loook at all their cool widgets and what not
i want to try this
From what I heard it's a lockscreen? =\
So it's similar to Flyscreen, but only with one screen?

Flyscreen is not a home replacement, this is.
I would like this as a lock screen also.
But
Sweeter home ftw

I have a grudge against the dev of Sweeter Home for taking so long to update his HR :/
And it won't pass till the new release is available and I can steadily use it as my default HS.
Regarding SH - The dev is working on SH when not at work. She had a project at her regular job that took up ALL of her time and she had to abandon her personal projects for awhile. She is now working hard on SH again. But, because of her constant updates and some cool innovations that she doesn't want to be stolen she is only allowing a very few people to beta test (also, she gets enough info from the beta testers she has to stay busy - more testers would just complicate her job). But, she is making a LOT of progress. She has about five or six completely new features, it runs smoother, and looks great so far. Just be patient.
Didn't mean to highjack this thread. I like the idea behind this app. But, I wouldn't want it as a home replacement. It would be nice if it could operate as a window shade. A user could decide the screen to place the shade pull on and on what side of that screen. Then the user could pull it out select an option and the shade would draw back as the selection implemented. Or, while adjusting the app it would stay open until the "close shade" button was selected.
That IMHO would be a MUCH better option than a home screen replacement.
Related
I won't get picky about it.
But particularly I believe a world of a lot of g1 users, root and non root would really appreciate a home replacement that allows the user to do the following.
Choose which apps to show in the app drawer.
And the ability to move apps out into the "add to home screen" feature that shows up when you longpress the home screen/menu-add. In a new sub section called hidden apps/roughly around there.
So applications to prevent theft on the g1 could be hidden there over being spotted in the app drawer.
:]
Just an idea.
It is a good idea. Should post it in the dream applications+games section Though.
A layered app menu would be nice...

I was thinking that since the hero widget can't be ported to a normal g1 someone could try to use Sweeter home's layer option for an sms type widget similar to the hero.
I think it could work out very well since you can add layers and transparency.
An option to hide the apps in the tray would be nice!! I'm down for that.

Haha I know! Lately I've been bothered at having a very long app drawer, and apps like Photovault, password storage apps, and other not so commonly used apps would just fit beautifully in that new folder I'm suggesting.
I'm trying to keep this thread alive with hopes that a dev will see it and take the challenge so keep this thread alive :]
If anyone could do this, it would be the folks over at Better Android (OpenHome). In my humble opinion, they have the best home app on the market. You should forward this request to them!

I would like to, but half the time I've ever emailed better home they've done nothing but send me minimal short dissatisfying responses. But yea I use Open Home/have bought it.
Currently running Cyans build with the a hero theme or some widgets works fine enough with me.
But idk I think A home has a better go about things like this.
And of course Sweeter home is my favorite.
Yeah not sure why folders in the menu havent been figured out yet...I was almost sure someone would have cracked that missing feature long ago...
i would love a folder app or a tab app to put in the drawer,
you can hide icons, or make a whole tab of just games.
also, i wish there was a app that would lock icons on the main screens.
so nobody can move the icons unless you activate them.
anyone get my drift?
Better Android Says:
That's a good idea, although 'hiding' apps from the app drawer wont provide any securities because they are plenty to launch an app once you get pass the lock screen.

I sent him back an email saying that it would still help to weed out duplicates (like having a shortcut, and in the app drawer). I didn't get a response back on that one.
I would like to see this though.

Yea if we made a larger up roar about it and got more emails to the betterandroid guys they'd pretty much have to do it
Ive just made something like this.... you can "throw" away the application shortcuts from the app drawer and "restore" them using an added menu..

I was gonna link his thread, but i guess he already linked his own.
Maybe you should provide screenshots and more details.
Thanks!
MY 2 cents
So far I love the suggestions and it sounds great.
Have you seen DxTop? I used it for a while and loved the one swipe to any of the 4 screens, maybe something like that. Maybe the ability to add more or subtract screens.
And always keep it fast.
I have heard that there is a mod that allows up to 10 screens, but I haven't found it yet. Please PM me if you know what mod I am talking about.
Thanks.

retske - Just so you're aware, the app that rogro linked to just a few posts above does all those things without needing to install bloatware (except for the "1 swipe" thing...what's a tap or 2 more?).

The developer is from this forum and his recent posts says his got something special in the works but it might take him awhile. The fade transition is simply the fastest transition I have seen on Android or the iPhone for that matter. Cube reminds me of Compiz but is not quick enough for everyday use

I kinda like a new one I'm trying, it's called "Home++." I think it might still be in beta technically, however.

Kind of reminds me of WM6.5 a bit in terms of layout/looks, but I do kind of like it.
Currently I'm using Home++, and really liking it, i like the toolbar along the bottom.
Am interested to try Intelligent Home screen, have signed up for the beta, but haven't heard anything about it yet

I personally use HOME++ until Intelligent Home Screen gets worked on a little bit more. IHS would be an awesome lock screen. But not home replacement. Specially since you can't place any widgets on it.

Intelligent Home Screen is really cool and so different. It is still way slow and buggy. I am sticking with Home++ for now.
I love GDE
GDE running fast on my G1
I've been using Home++ too for a few weeks, and I'm amazed that for a beta it's so functional and smooth. Haven't had it FC or do anything else weird either.
I used GDE for a while, but aesthetically it doesn't really feel that good (even with the theming support). Will give it another go once the version goes up a bit.

Hey guys found this over at android spin. I think it looks pretty damn cool. I just wonder how piratical it will be for day to day use. I mean we can always use more software to complicate our UI.

Whoa! I'm excited for this, if the implementation turns out as smoothly as it looks.

you mean Sense's ugly cousin. Sense all day everyday! brings out the color in my screen
Of course in taking closer looks it's important to separate WOO SHINY EYECANDY from... actually useful.
E.G. will this make my device better, or just get in the way?
In terms of that it's hit and miss. But I do like, for instance, the means of setting the alarm clock (why go into a different screen? This solution seems quick and intuitive), and the 'folding' UI elements - such as the SMS widget, etc. If you don't need them, they fold out of the way. One problem I had with Sense is that most every widget commands the full screen, not leaving me space for much else, regardless of whether or not I'm using the widget at the time.
The widget 'fan' is interesting but I think I prefer the typical 'card' view. The ability to easily drag widgets and shortcuts directly to specific screens is certainly a time saver.
I'm curious to see where this will go in its final iteration -- much like concept cars, everything looks shiny and pretty, but the final product ends up stripping out a lot of the shiny pretty eyecandy in lieu of more practical, intuitive fare.
Good UI design, after all, should be transparent.
ide take this "ugly cousin" over sense any day
+1 Sense is to bulky and doesn't fare well for everyday use. The screens taken for the video were taken fron a MT3G so hopefully we will see that level of smoothness from 1st gen android devices TAT Home is just one of a ton a exciting new things that came out at MWC, cant wait for the beta to drop.
Here is some stuff from an email reply I got from TAT.
We are currently in alfa and expect to reach beta in a couple of weeks.
After that, we will slowly but surely start to roll out the preview to some of the 17,000 people who've signed up so far,
starting with specific Android versions and screen resolutions as we won't target all of them in the first version.
If your are lucky and make it to the list of testers, you'll hear from us in a month or so
I don't remember what forum it was but someone also posted an email reply and they stated that the Nexus1 screen res is supported at start. I also think the G1 should be gtg because it looks like a HTC Hero in the vid.
OK, I know right off the bat that this is a dumb question, but I just can't figure out what the big deal about Espresso is. I've searched many, many times, but that just brings up people asking how to install it.
What I'm curious about is what's the big deal? What does Espresso bring to the table? Functionally, not cosmetically, why would I want Espresso on my phone?
Because if it's just a cosmetic change, people surely wouldn't be cluttering up threads so much asking about it, right?
It brings nothing but a newer looking Rosie Bar. I for one cant stand it and would prefer the stock Rosie to Espresso. Ive also grown to like the Droid Launcher...

OK, thanks.
That's pretty much what I thought, but so many people seem so very, very eager to get it within 10 seconds of a new rom release, I thought maybe it might add some actual functionality.
But if it's just the cosmetic change, then I agree, it's butt-ugly. Stock Rosie looks much better. Haven't tried out the Droid launcher yet, I'll give it a look. Gotta say though, I'm not sure about ditching Sense. It's not so much Sense itself I'm attached to, but some of the widgets that depend on it....
I for one think any variation of rosie is ugly, I prefer nexus launcher. I also liked launcher2, with the app dock. That sinistermashes dudes idea for a dock as a launcher was a kewl idea. Conservative and intuitive.

Neither the Droid Launcher or Espresso themes ditch Sense. They just change the look of the launcher bars at the bottom of the screen. All the Sense features and widgets still work fine with either of them.
I like the stock rosie or the nexus launcher, at least those tell you which screen you're on. The expresso doesn't and it's big... too much space taken up.
I don't get what the big deal is.

I'll check it out. As I said, I'm not attached to sense, I just can't bring myself to get rid of a few of the widgets that rely on it.
That said, from a cosmetic point of view, I think Espresso is going about 10 years backwards from a UI design point of view. I also think the stock, Google developed Android launcher belongs somewhere in the Windows 3.1 league.....
Then again, I also don't understand why people give a crap about the lockscreen. I always just do a quick double click on the menu button and never see it in the first place.
Maybe I'm just not the target audience for these particular tweaks....

Id give up sense in a heartbeat if i could find a bookmark widget and email widget as nice as senses. And the full weather animations too.
I hear beatiful widgets has animations? Same level as 2.1?
I remember a thread on here a while ago where people were theming to get the Windows Phone 7 look. There's now a launcher on the market called Launcher 7 that does most of the work for you, you should check it out.

Definitely. If there's one thing that I'd like to see more of on the Market, it's more "alternative" launchers like this. Launcher Pro, ADW, Go, etc. all have their differences, but they're more or less the same in that they're all plays off of the whole multiple homescreen and a dock thing. It's nice to see new ideas out there. I remember a while back there was a launcher that showed all of your texts, email, facebook notifications, etc. in kind of an agenda view. It never really took off, but it's good to see devs think outside the box about the homescreen.

Because thats the core of how android to this point is intended to work. I like Launcher7, its fast, smooth and functional so I play with it here and there but the tile UI is comparatively bland and boring even with widget support (and the custom ones I've seen that arent bland and boring are WAY too busy). I'm gonna put it on my wifes phone since she'll love the big ass simple tiles concept.

without using custom images those 2x1 and 1x1 tiles (and the headphone/camera images) are all there is. I'm not going to spend anytime importing images because I like my android phone as an android phone and it wont get any use anyway. I was basically showing how the UI looks unmolested.
