The other day my screen stopped responding to my touch completely (only about 2 months old). The phone would randomly put itself into airplane mode and when I turned that off I was still able to send and receive text messages. I was unable to view my contacts folder or make calls though because android.phone or various other processes would crash when I tried. So I did a hard reset on my phone to see if that would fix my screen problem and now I cannot even send or receive text because I am stuck at the startup for the device and am unable to complete the startup because I cannot touch the screen. The red light of death comes up briefly when the phone is plugged in but goes away very quickly even with the battery in. The phone boots normally although it seems to take a little bit longer than usual. Does anyone have any idea on what is going wrong and how I can fix my screen?
Thanks!
this sounds like a hardware issue. if your phone is covered by the warranty then just call your provider and they should send you a new one.
is your phone rooted?
My G1 is stuck like this too, although mine was waterlogged so it's no longer under warranty @[email protected]
no it's not rooted
You can try to reflash the stock rom to see if that will help or you can root it and load a custom rom and see if that will make any difference. You can always use your trackball to navigate. If all that doesn't work then like david said its a hardware problem and is covered under warranty.
I can't scroll to navigate because the initial setup after a hard reset requires touch. Where do I find the info on re-flashing the stock rom?
Just find the official t mobile rom and flash like you would any rom. Put the update.zip on root of sd card then power on phone with home + power then in your case I would wipe (alt + w) then update (alt + s). I would try to find you a link but I'm bout to be leaving work. A google search will come up with it or someone else might chime in and give you a link.

Try this.
i'm going to need the rogers stock rom ,not the t-mobile one I can't seem to find it anywhere. also will reflashing the stock rom void the warranty in any way. i assume it won't since there would be no way for them to tell but just double checking.

Hello,
I bought a Nexus one and as I don't live in a country that sells it my cousin brought it to me.
The device doesn't work and self Reboots giving me 20 seconds of use.
Tryed working with/without a sim,
Did a Factory Reset,
Formated the Sd-Card on my Pc,
and still in the same spot.
any ideas on what else to try before giving up?
anyone had this problem and fixed it?
My phone is not ROOTed and is on Version 1 of 2.1
didn't have enough time to get other info like Baseband and stuff.
I'm not willing to root the phone.
** If i send it back it will make the phone very expensive as i will have to pay costums fee when they mail it back to me
Thanks in advance!
Sounds like a DOA. Really bad luck.
If you send it back you should not pay duty to get it back usually, unless you live in a very tax hungry country! Between US and CAN you would not get duty.
Beside try speaking with cust support, DOA are usually well handled by company and so far HTC seem to be handling repair quite well as per the few post about broken screen I have seen.
Did you try running the phone WITHOUT an SD card ? good luck!

If the boots, has never been rooted (boot unlock), no immediate physical damage, and has no signs of liquid damage or tampering (check void sticker).... it's likely just a software issue. Reload original firmware, or load a new firmware... Don't give up, sounds like the phone is still okay.

So it seems.
Where are you from, Krypton1984 ?
Looks like some rogue app is loading at boot, causing reset. Possibly corrupt ROM image - but not sure. Might be software, might be hardware. But here's one thing to try:
If you're on a T-Mobile-compatible phone (900/1700/2100), do yourself a favor and flash stock Froyo. No need to root for that. The guide is in the sticky thread. In case of corrupted ROM image it'll do the trick.
I think you should factory reset it. Maybe even download the official 2.1 rom and install it. See if it fixes it.
Try a battery trade in first. Believe it or not, my first N1 seemed dead, and support gave me a swap for a new unit. When the new unit came in, it was still "dead" with the battery that originally shipped with the device. A new battery is what caused my N1 to finally come to life. The batteries that ship with N1's have QC issues, because I was one of many to report a DOA battery in the Google support forums.
its brand new,
I didn't pay customs on the way in because my cousin brought it to me, so if i send it back i will and it makes the phone very expensive.
what if when i try to change firmware the phone reboots again without finishing?
i dont want to brick the phone.

Well booting to the bootloader will answer the hardware software question.
1. Turn off the phone.
2. Now press (and hold) the Trackball and turn on the phone.
Once you're in the loader let it sit for a while. If it stays up it's a software problem and a new ROM should sort it out. If it reboots while in the bootloader it sounds like a DOA phone.
Good luck.
You can also try a full factory reset through the bootloader. Search for the instructions as i do not know them off the top of my head

i am having a similar issue. The phone reboots randomly and gets stuck at the static X logo screen. i have to remove the battery and let it be aside for at least 10 minutes before i am able to get the phone up and running again.
i tried updating to froyo. it installed but then froze up again on reboot. i did the battery thing and then started it up, went on fine..froyo had been successfully installed, but my random reboot problem STILL DID NOT GO AWAY..
can this be sorted by installing the original rom image?? or do i have to go in for a swap?!?
i don't want to swap coz they send out refurbished devices,,but its the last option...

You'll probably need to swap based on what you're saying. I, though, actually think Refurbished devices are just as good or even better than new. Think about it, if you keep getting dust under the screen maybe a refurbished phone will already have the fix? For that scenario it works out.

I really think this is a bad RAM issue.
I had this happen to my Nexus (ATT). It was prior to flashing froyo. I tried everything, flashing back to stock (including radio), cyan's latest, Paul's (stock) Froyo (with and without radio). Same result. Seemingly random reboots.
I thought initially that it was a software issue - It would not reboot while in fastboot/Amon's Recovery. But having tried every software combination, I've concluded that it MUST be hardware, unless I'm missing something big.
The phone, for the most part, would be fine as long as I DON'T TOUCH IT. It would stay idle for a long period of time (24hrs+), then I would use it Everything from web browsing to downloading apps to making calls, and it would reboot. It's frustrating because it seems that it's rebooting for no reason except that I'm touching it.
Sent in for a replacement, it arrives today. Hopefully it will not suffer this problem.
After talking with HTC they told me i need to swap the phone.
Because i'm out of america i need to send it to someone in the US amd then they send him the new divice after he sends my old one,
I am not satisfide with google's (first guy I talked with) and HTC because none of whome understand the severity and the hard feeling of getting a BRAND NEW IN BOX paper-weight. nothing about we'll compensate you or nada.
For me it tells me the brand is not strong enough to manage an outer state service and i wouldn't recomend them for countries that they don't cell it for.
If you where born in a HTC GOOGLE compatible country enjoy!
As i'm am probably less lucky and still in 2010 nationality counts
This is my second SGS with this problem and I am trying to determine if it is common or if I am just monumentally unlucky.
During normal use the bottom soft keys (menu and back) will become non-functional. One will stay lit and one will go out, but both will cease to work. Everything else on the phone is still responsive, sometimes the keys 'revive' themselves after a short period of time, other times I need to lock the phone to get them back.
I got this phone (a replacement) on the 6th, and this started on the 12th and has been happening more and more often ever since. Has anyone else seen this or have an idea what it may be? Or is this phone is destined to be my 2nd DOA in a month?
Here is a video showing the problem: '
you tube.com/watch?v=1s-wqWsHaIs
That is definitely not normal behaviour.
Exact same problem here; it seems to happen when I'm using the phone quite a bit but when I leave the phone alone for awhile, problem seems to go away then return because I'm using it too much.

FYI: Samsung support told me to return my phone.
It is almost like one of the soft keys gets stuck 'down', because it is the same behavior if you just hold down one of the keys. Mine seems to happen more when bluetooth is on and it comes and goes in spurts; good for an hour, bad for an hour, etc.
ETA: I am sure now that the soft keys are getting 'stuck down'. I have seen it 3 times now where I would press the left soft key and the light on the key will remain out, then after a second or so the quick search screen comes up and the left soft key light is still out.
any solution to this problem? i seem to have a slightly different issue
this just happened to me recently everything was working fine until this morning when i tried to press the menu and back buttons it wouldnt work, although the buttons light up and is registering my actions when i press them the light turns off and let go is lit up again.
could this be a software issue or something conflicting with my lednotification mod?
please reply ^_^
I've got the exact same issue with my soft keys getting stuck too. Just started a couple days ago, phone's less than a month old. I was also told to take my phone in for repairs.
Oh one tech support guy told me that Froyo might fix it... I'm kinda hoping for that, seeing as how this issue isn't exactly 100% reproducible for the warranty service department
I have the same problem its almost like the soft key is being held down, anyone find a fix for this?
Add me to the list
Add another one to the list. I too am experiencing this problem and I'm unfortunately screwed because of it. I attempted to return the phone, however the store in question refused to accept it because they tested it and found it had been unlocked. Two week old phone on stock FW bought outright ($600) and they won't replace it.
Unbelievable!

Lock it back and go again.
I know this post it's a bit old, but i was harvesting the web looking for an answer to my problem that seems to be the same posted here.
I have a i9000T with eclair 2.1 and soft keys get stuck now and then. I couldn't find a way to reproduce this behaviour.
Recently (yesterday) i flashed a new 2.3.3 firmware hoping this curse to end. The problem seems to persist, but in some situations that i asume for a bad flashing (i didn't repartition neither wipe the phone before flash).
Anyway, can anybody tellme if this is a software or hardware issue? I'll have to return my phone or this is going to be 'fixed' with a nice flash?
Thanks.

Only one way to find out mate.
You need to flash a 2.1 rom that consists of 3 files. 512 pit and re-partition.
Should get you back on track again.
I did flash it again with the 2.3.3 JVH, a few moments ago. Also did a repartition and wipe data and cache. It seems nice, but in a few minutes the same happend. Now, when i press the menu button it takes a nice screenshot of the phone. xD
I need to flash to a 2.1 version? Why is this? I thought flashing with any rom will work.
Thanks.
Solution to this problem!
Hey all - I found a solution to this problem - I can confirm this has fixed the problem on TWO phones for me - read the whole thread as this fix doesn't like custom firmwares, but works fine with all the regular FWs I've downloaded.
Works perfect - and simple fix!

Too bad i didn't see this before
I have I9000T used this 2663 method and now my soft buttons doesn't work anymore...
Didn't find a clear solution in the forums so i want to ask, like i said my phone is a I9000T with official 2.2.1 (UBPJA) rooted using SuperOneClick and unlocked editing the nv_data.bin file.
I was thinking on doing a hard reset to get back to the factory defaults but i see many ways of doing it that it gets confusing... i see peolple doing it through the privacy menu but i think that only erase data and doesn't restore anything OS wise, also see other people doing it using volume + home + power and selecting later clear storage, i think this is the same that the option in the privacy menu, and finally i see some people typing this code *2767*3855# what is the proper way to get back to the original OS in my case?
Thanks in advance...
OK so in Australia we got the SGS FroYo 2.2 update in November and when I went to upgrade my phone everything went stupid. Basically I'd never needed/wanted to root or anything like that my phone was running with its basic firmware plus OCLF to fix the lag. Basically I got over excited about the update and didn't read anything and well I bricked my phone because I didn't remove OCLF. That was fine and dandy until I released that my 3br would not work anymore (don't ask my why) so i had to send it in for warranty. So thats the background/past before everything went stupid again.
Now I got my phone back and the 2.2 upgrade had been installed the repair deatils where:
- Inspected and chemically cleaned all contacts
- Upgraded handset to latest available software DTJP3
- Unit tested and passed live on air test
- Handset meets all manufacturer specifications SU

Now like I said I got my phone back and everything was fine & dandy but I noticed it was really slow, slower then 2.1 was. Also my D button would not work, no matter how hard i tried to press it, even when I swiped over it the blue line thing goes around it. Along with not being able to press the d button, anything located near the side of the screen would just not register my touch. Also my phone would just decide without me touching it to just select things and malfunction, type whatever text it liked, it also would constantly scroll up and down and basically just screwed my head in. Now I thought this was just a temporary error so I restored factory settings through 3BR and privacy settings method and it seemed fixed. So I applied z4root so i could OCLF back to fix the lag but that bricked my phone so I had to reset it again and then I applied voodoo lagfix (the one click method from market). I didn't really notice and difference with the voodoo lagfix so i disabled it and bam! my phone went even more stupid. So I googled and searched xda and removed voodoo entirely by flashing back to the original firmware and that seem to fix everything but the D for about 5 mins and now its not as bad as it was but its still malfunctioning all over the place and I can't even have it on the 1st screen without it constantly going into my contacts and trying to delete them or type things...
So what do I do? If I send it back for warranty will they notice that the firmwares not optus but the orginal (from samsung-firmwares.com)? will that break my warranty? Plus sending it for warranty now will mean I won't get the phone back till January at the earliest. Or can someone suggest something else to go about fixing it?
Sorry about long post, thought going into detail would be better and more helpful.
Hey mate,
If you reflash with dtjp3 from samfirmwares then that is the firmware they put on and will not be able to tell you fkd with it.
Good luck
Alex
Hello all,
My incredible s freezes, I would then need to press the power button (to put screen into sleep) and then wake it up then it's good again (not restarting).
Any idea whats this all about?
Did someone else have the same problem? what should i do next, how can i find out if its software problem or hw?
thank you all for the help
PS: i tried soft reset and hard reset, nothing helped, could it be that i need to change the touch screen DIGITIZER?
PS2: i was searching how to do a factory reset....
From the main home screen, tap menu
Tap Settings, then Privacy
Tap Factory data reset
Tap Reset phone
Enter your password if required, then tap Erase everything to confirm
in my Privacy menu i dont have Factory data reset, whats wrong with this phone? i just did upgrade, using Adroid 2.3.3, Sense 2.1, SW no 2.30.405.1
found out that the factory reset thing is in SD & phone storage menu
i did a factory reset but its still happening

Is it under warranty?
If so I'd bring it back, if not i'd go the custom ROM route.
The fact that you can turn it off/on again and the issue is fixed makes me think it is software related.
I agree with scoobysnacks, i would do the same
most probably software related. i normally use "keyboard from android 2.3" app from the market, back in those sense 3.0 days it worked brilliantly but when i flashed any sense 3.5 roms, the a and k keys become not very responsive. the result?
my texts turn into something li(k)e this. no (a)'s and no (k)'s.
in the end i changed to go keyboard and everything works well again
thank you guys for the advice
as i sad before i hard-reset the device, and the problem is still there, even more i noticed that in some cases the upper part of the display gets numb, doesn't respond to the touch/finger ... again after i turn off the display and back on it works... also when i write texts (horizontal aligned) the left part of the keys aren't working or it just pushes the wrong ones.... i tried to do the calibration thing, but no change
i installed go keyboard and no change,
i just cant write 'w', when i touch the W in the go-keyboard it will write E or Q
whats wrong whit it?
i did S-OFF, and rooted the IS, now ill have to find a quick/light ROM to run on it
any suggestions? for a stable/ light and quick ROM?
ill do this test and if still nothing works ill changed the display, right? any other suggestions?
i did it, i flashed a custom ROM, Android Revolution HD
problem still exists
some more details:
when i keep it in landscape position, and try to write a message
the keys: w d x , are not responding, so every time i try to touch them, a neighbor key activated
any other solutions? before i go and order a new touch screen digitizer?

Wondering what will you get if you use swype keyboard..
perhaps touch screen digitizer really need a change then if all not working.
I've got the same issue. The freeezing happens in all screens, and requires the power button to be returned to operational state. This is on a stock IS 2.3.3 ROM.
next i will try S-off, rooting and custom ROM, and see what happens. I can't see how this would be a hardware (digitizer) issue as it comes and goes. Is a little frustrating, and since I bought it used, I have no warranty.
Same issue here too i thought i was alone with that issue, posted in trinity forum.
I'm getting some random lock-ups even sensitive buttons and touchscreen don't respond, It goes away going to sleep and going back, it's so frustrating while web browsing for example
Am I Alone with that issue, or this is sign my CPU is dying?

Let's fight together with that problem
Well, completely wiped and installed a new ROM, still the same freezing issue. I've oredered a new digitizer, so we'll see if that works.
New digitizer didn't work either. Gonna try a new kernal, after that, I give up!!
Hi amigo, I face the same problem, maybe this rom is not very stable.
Tried a different Kernel, and still the same issue. I've tried everything I can think of and this phone still seems to randomly lock-up.
First of all running stock Droid 3 Rooted Flashed to cricket
with all the fixin's, Bootstrap, CMW, ... etc....
:edit ... Now with safestrap.

I noticed after taking my phone out of my pocket while trying to turn it on from normal off screen while on that it wouldn't show up the light still indicated it was working I can even turn off the phone.
Taking the battery out and back in semi fixed this but only to the extent where when the phone is turned on the moto logo doesn't appear but the droid eye does.
whence at the booted screen if I were to let it go black it has a chance to not stay on unless I RIGHT after it boots unlock it and keep it lit,
(but)
the main problem I noticed was it really only did this after lets say I was typing or doing anything with the qwerty board open and perhaps I let the screen turn off after a minute,
when I try to wake it up it stays black. EVERY TIME like most of the time,
it has to do with the keyboard being open when the screen goes to sleep.
WHAT IS WRONG *pulls hair out*

Ok so far since no one has said anything I have also reinstalled my old newest state, still giving me crap.
Then just did the newest update 5.7 blah and still it's happening.
I hypothesize it might be the flex ribbon cable maybe (but it really might not) I read from another phone it might be a capacitor but it might not.
Whatever is wrong the phone still is able to at times now 40/60% of the time work properly and wake normal but then again not.

Yeah, it does sound like a hardware problem. If nobody else can help you fix it, you'll need to reflash the latest OTA update (or revert to your safestrap nandroid), unroot it and restore all the system apps that you may have frozen/deleted, and hope that Verizon will replace it.
Thanks

UNLESS you think if I had the previous owner take it into the store could they replace it? what steps would they take to see if it was rooted?

it came on at least 3 times normal then it didn't either right after the 3rd try or upon closing the qwerty board ...
also do you have an answer at all for the ics portion of my problem?
