Kaiser on last legs, anyone else? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

The kaiser was probably one of the biggest pains in the asses I've ever dealt with, and probably won't be doing anything HTC for a long time to come.
It's a 8925 tilt that I got right when it came out. Got the unlock code from att and been using my tmobile sim ever since.
Sometime last year, the speakerphone died.
Then, earlier this summer, the phone just up and quit one day. Would give the tricolor screen and say there was no ROM.
Great. Switched to my backup $10 nokia and it's been great.
Decided to try again yesterday. Updated to the latest radio. Tried one of the cooked up 6.5's. Already been on hardspl 3.56 since last year.
And it's been chaos. Initial bootup froze up at the HTC screen. I gave it 20 minutes, and then did a hard reset. It booted up, imported my sim contacts. Then it went on to setting up the internet, and froze at 0%. Reset it, and it freezes at the HTC screen again. Again, hard reset. 10 minutes later, I'm finally booted and setup. Install Google Maps. Works fine. Few hours later, I pull my phone out of my pocket, and the screen is lit but displays nothing. Buttons are lit up too. Frozen again. Reboot it again, and it's like I hard reset it. Had to initialize the phone again, reinstall Google Maps.
Wake up this morning, and again, blank lit screen. Right now, it's seemingly functional, but I haven't done anything to it. From power on to booted takes roughly 4 minutes. Absolutely unacceptable.
Reflashed it, and it's behaving no differently.
Anyone else experience this before?

No, mine has been perfect in all aspects. I would suggest trying another HardSPL version & a standard HTC WM6.1 ROM & see how things run.
You could just be unlucky & have a bad device but it could also be due to bad ROMs & HardSPL version.

My Kaiser is dying; possibly PointUI/virus related

The following (long!) post was originally posted at the PointUI forum, but I thought it best to cross post it here. I've tried to organize it as best as I can and appreciate those with the patience to read it and the good will to offer help.
------------------------
My AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) is basically out of commision right now, and I can only track the source of the problems back to the latest update of PointUI (v1.02b, Feb. 4th 2008), as I've done nothing else with the phone since. However, seeing as how I've uninstalled PointUI and the problems persist (and are getting worse), I suspect a virus is afoot, or some other lovely problem.
Since the update, I've experienced the same problems as everyone else on this PointUI thread (system hangs on "running apps" screen and randomly), but in addition to that, several other things. I am running the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware. These have been my symptoms for the most part since then:
Periodically, animations between menus would slow down considerably and sometimes freeze for a moment, even when I had nothing else running in the background. This would happen for any menu: the cog, the bottom bar, favorites, etc.
The touchscreen would stop working (usually, only within PointUI). This usually happened when animations would slow down, but it would also occur alone, randomly. The hardware buttons would still work during touchscreen failure, usually, but sometimes they wouldn't, and I would have to soft reset.
Sometimes, the power button wouldn't work, and I would press it several times thinking I didn't do it hard enough the first few times. After ~20 seconds, the screen would turn itself off and on. When the screen was on, it would not responding to touches.
The PointUI top bar that appears when using any application would, at random, not work. By this I mean when I would tap it, it's like it wasn't even there -- the Start menu would come down, or the volume control, date/time, etc. depending on where I tapped it. Also, the top right button (red X, or the check mark) would not display correctly in programs or the today screen (a check mark when it should be an X, etc.), randomly, and would not be responsive.
Yesterday (Feb. 23rd), things took a turn for the worse. Here's what happened:
When I started up Tom Tom, the screen went completely non-responsive. Only buttons would work.
After exiting Tom Tom (in an attempt to restart it), the touchscreen would continue not to work, both in PointUI and regular old Windows.
Shortly following this, buttons would stop working, and the entire phone would freeze up. Couldn't turn the touchscreen on and off. I did a soft reset.
During startup, when it showed the AT&T logo, the screen dimmed itself to the lowest brightness setting (it never does this). It would remain this way all the way through the bootup process and into Windows as well, never getting any brighter. Even after going to the backlight settings and increasing the brightness, the screen would get brighter, but would never turn off.
Once in Windows, the touchscreen was completely non-responsive. Buttons would still work, but everything would move really slow.
The screen would never turn itself off. Also, when pressing buttons, the screen would never get any brighter.
After mashing the buttons a bit (in anger, yes, but lightly), the touchscreen alignment application came up, asking me to touch the screen in a few places. This worked.
Then, a call came in. The screen froze during the animation for the notification of an incoming call. Also, the phone started to ring, but within 1 second stopped. However, it would vibrate nonstop (my phone is setup to ring and vibrate at the same time) till the end of the earth!
At this point, none of the buttons would work, not even the power button. Did a soft reset.
This was followed by the same exact symptoms ~4 times (touch screen not working, never turning off and staying at the same brightness level, etc). Outgoing calls would work ok, but each time, a call would come in and freeze up my phone.
Eventually, after several resets, the touchscreen would work without having to mash the buttons to get the touchscreen alignment app running. However, it would still freeze on incoming calls (only).
Somewhere between all the resets, I realized that sliding out the keyboard would never switch the screen to landscape. I can still type and my text would show up on-screen, and screen taps still work properly (even touchflo), but all of this would occur while still in portrait mode.
Lastly, the power button would only work once. It can turn the screen off, but not back on, ever.
Somewhere, between the resets, I uninstalled PointUI, which did nothing. I also tried running Sprite Backup, which would never open (and still doesn't at time of writing)!
Before the PointUI update, none of these symptoms were present (earlier release was v1.01b, used since early January). After the update, they began creeping up, getting worse over time. I have installed nothing else since the update, and have only ever sync'd the phone with my computer to charge it.
Today (Feb. 24th), it started getting a little worse...
When I make calls, sometimes the microphone doesn't work at all. I can hear the person I'm calling, but they can't hear me.
Sometimes, the green phone button won't start the phone application.
Power button isn't turning off the screen anymore at all.
This is the current status of the phone. Weathered, battered and beaten, it marches on, still capable of opening the HTC Audio Manager and playing my MP3's in consolation.
Any help regarding the source of these issues is greatly appreciated.
Some additional notes/summary:
I am running the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware.
I haven't dropped the phone or let it get wet.
I may hard reset sometime this coming week, probably Monday. The first thing I'll do is reinstall PointUI v1.02b, and maybe TomTom. We'll see how that goes.
You know, the more I read this post, the more it seems like a virus.
Man... just hard reset/flash a new rom and be done with it.

I thought the above was the reason we DIDN'T have WM viruses?
Virus + Hard Reset = Problem solved?

I agree, at least that way you know if its hardware or software related and you stop fighting a losing battle

That's why I haven't bothered with any of the anti-virus programs out there. Why bother having a constant drain on the system resources when you can do a hard reset, and restore all the cabs & hacks in under 30 minutes?

Just an update here, my phone started acting up again ~5 days ago: freezing on incoming calls, not switching to landscape when sliding out the keyboard, never turning the screen off, etc. 3 days ago it got better, and I was able to run Sprite Backup and tried to restore the phone back to my pre-PointUI days. It had to reset, and on that same reset, Sprite didn't run -- the phone just booted into Windows, and all my problems came back.
Last night, I got a call that froze up my phone again. So I reset it, and by surprise, Sprite Backup ran and started restoring my phone. Now it's back to the way it was in January, and everything works perfectly! This backup was made before I ever installed PointUI.
Bottomline, no PointUI, no problem.
However, I should say that with v1.01b, I never experienced any of these issues. Because of my experience, I'm not giving any test versions a try, but I may install 1.03b, when it comes out. Definitely doing another backup before that too.
Thank you everyone.
Sounds to me more like a hardware issue, perhaps with your SD card.
I had the same issues you were havingh, but without ever having installed PointUi on my Kaiser.
I was using Dutty's Rom version 7 with radio 1.27.xx
only installed aps : TomTom and SPB brain training
So it would seem this is a WM or TomTom triggered issue....
My Kaiser just started doing this very same thing today. I'm running the standard AT&T WM6.1 ROM and have been successfully since December 07. I have a 6GB SD card with TomTom on it, also have had no issues until now. Today, the screen didn't switch into landscape upon sliding the keyboard out; the camera freezes and/or is unresponsive; power button doesn't work (on OR off; with or without SD card inserted); couldn't pick up a call earlier today; TomTom freezes when loading; WM player freezes while loading media.... I have not installed any apps on this thing since January. Seems to me like some memory corruption going on, possibly page file related.
I *did* notice that I had about 45MB worth of temp internet files cached and cleaned those up earlier today after these symptoms started. Didn't fix the problem though, but being low on main storage may have contributed to the corruption problem.
I had hoped I wouldn't need to hard reset my phone but here we go....

Problem with my HTC TyTn II

I have a big problem.....
My phone hung this morning on the alarm. It kept on going. So I turned off the phone. A few hours later I booted up the phone again but it didn't boot to the os... it is stuck in the 3 colored bootloader screen
I tried reflashing the original WM6.1 rom. It worked.... until the cusomization had ran. After the customization reboot there was the bootloader again.....
Can anyone help me on this?
Info in the bootloader screen is as folows:
KAIS130
SPL-3.29.0000
CPLD-8
USB
Please help!!
First thing I'd do, is a bulk standard Hard reset on the phone. if it crashes again on the customise, then hard reset again, and soft reset before the customise kicks in.
alternatively, if you're happy to try a custom ROM, then flash it to a new one.
if these dont work, then its time to approach HTC, and see if you can get it repaired...
I allready did a hard reset after flashing my tytn and a soft reset before getting the customization screen. But every time it boots up and it wants to configure my phone. So I cannot get arround the cusomization
While re-flashing my TyTN II to the Orange WM 6.1 Test ROM I did the reset before the customisation...and what happens the phone resets itself to default. It seems that the operators have found a way to make sure that their customisations are added.
Mine is purchased without a account. So there should be no provider **** on it..... It's a realy weird problem though....
Could it be dirt??? I left the battery out for a few hours and it works for a short time. Putted my sim card back in and it stopped working. Reboot and it worked again for a short time but after te next reboot its over again and it wil not come back again. I now plan to leave the battery out for the night see how it is in the morning...
Anyona an idea (bump)
I've got the same problem.
Although I'm able to restart successfully the Kaiser randomly.
If you pay attention to the tricolor screen... it blanks the screen for a very short moment. Precisely in that moment, a message is written in the screen
" No imgafile file found! "
And then went back immediatley to the tricolor screen.
My Kaiser is HTC orginal, updated with the original HTC ROMWINDOWS MOBILE 6.1. I did not nothing special to it, I treated always it carefully... It seems a random Hardware problem. HTC is an awfull brand.
Now I have to go to HTC service... they will get my phone for a couple of months at least.... and I know (from previous experiencies) they work very very badly (they can give your phone back even broken!!)
Conclusion... HTC never more.
Did have the same problem. Asked and RMA to HTC. Shipped the phone on june 30th. Phone came back repaired yesterday !
This morning... the %$* red green blue reappear when I soft reset the unit.
Not very reliable, will have to buy another phone.

Kaiser bloatware

Hi, I'm just turning on my 8925 for the first time and before setting it up I want to remove all the trial stuff. I set up, soft reset when the "3 seconds customization" comes up, but when the device turns back on, it takes me back to set up again (screen align, password, etc.) I've done this before with another Kaiser and I know it works, but this one keeps recycling the whole process. I've gone through the clear storage, set up, soft reset several times already and it's the same each and every time. What am I doing wrong?
I would keep resetting and if it still continues trying to install the bloatware, dump the rom and go with some of the other great ones. L26 Kaiser Diamond Rom V12 has been good for me lately, Schaps has some good ones ot there too. Those roms will better utalize the hardware on your kaiser. Hope this helps...
I'm so fed up with this. I going to stop now since I think too many resets will screw with the device. I'm starting to wonder if this is the same as the last Kaiser I had. For once there's a new green "window mobile 6.1" screen right after the AT&T logo at start up, which my other tilt didnt have. The screen says to wait while it's clearing storage everytime I do a hard reset, then take me to set up again, then back to the 3 seconds of bloated wares. Rinse and repeate. Another difference is that this one came with HTC Home today home screen the one with the big digital clock and tabs.
Could it be this is a used phone and the previous user loaded it with a different ROM?
You need to soft reset BEFORE the 3 second notice comes up...if the box pops up, you're too late and need to wait to get to the today screen once again. Remember...BEFORE...either way, there are many really nice ROMs out there...
Ah hah! Voila, you are THE man! Thank you thank you! <3
Still strange that this one came preloaded with HTC Home plug-in, though. But Im happy either way
My sister got a Tilt today and had the same issue (I tried to guide her over the phone to ditch the bloatware - she won't be flashing ROMs anytime soon...)
Hers contains the HTC Home plugin as well.
They've apparently updated the shipping ROM...
Glad to hear that it works fine before the 3 second box.
You'll be able to remap the PTT button right out of the box also. Good stuff.
Im just hoping this one doesnt have battery problem like the one I got before. I kept it as long as I could, even got an extra power battery for it (since the stock one drained after maybe 6 hours), until the damn thing heat up so bad while being charged that it almost burn my hand...
Been charging this one for a few hours and no heat problem yet!
/fingers crossed
You should really try a Manilla ROM--they are easy on the eyes, very nice interface...look up NATF or the AthineOS Manilla ROM. Both guys did a fantastic job on those...
NATF http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424725
Athine OS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=435345
But, make sure to read the WIKI
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
Search around, more than likely, that question on your mind may have already been answered.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but they are the easiest to answer...

Slightly different Kaiser problem

Ok, first off ive scanned xda and cant see an answer to this specifically, hence the post.
Love the Kaiser-14months and using L26 Diamond Build
Lost the phone one night while worse for wear and bought another on ebsay-cus its a great phone. This morning new phone and where the problem begins-
Phone arrived. Good nick and standard O2 rom is onboard- no issues. Had my sim in for a while, and texting/phone/apps are normal. Now i had an old Sprite Backup file from my old phone from March so i straight away tried to back up. I didnt consider any other factors.
Now however im stuck. The phone boots. The L26 screen and music come up but eventually i hit a new message on white screen:-
"The device is unable to boot because you have turned off the device incorrectly or tried to install an application from untrusted source.Press send to rest your device... blah blah"
Pressing send, doing nothing or hard resetting the device just keeps me going on the same cycle. I take it because i backed up a new ROM, i should have flashde this phone first. Never thought.
Can i get back to basics again?? Help.Im using a Palm treo at min and hate it.

Any Merit To What I've Done? "Crashed" Tilt2

Hi All,
While on a business trip last week, my Tilt 2 (at the time, running the April 14 Energy ROM), my phone--for lack of a better word--crashed on me.
Everything had been working fine, I was sitting there with my phone connected to my laptop via a USB cable, and out of the blue, for no apparent reason, my phone re-booted, and never came back up. It would get to the splash screen, start loading the OS, reboot mid-stream, and get stuck in a loop. Weirder still, if I pulled the battery, let the phone sit, then put the battery back in, hitting the power button did nothing--even with the phone plugged in to power. On top of that, even if the phone was off, after a few minutes, it would power itself back on randomly, and get stuck in the re-boot loop. Very weird.
So, when I got home, before heading to the AT&T store and asking for a replacement, I thought I'd try to restore the phone myself.
At first, I pulled the battery, then stuck it back in, and sat there holding the volume down button, waiting to put the phone into bootloader mode. That worked, but even in bootloader mode, it would randomly re-boot. So, I started the process again, and immediately plugged the phone into my computer while in bootloader mode and ran the Task 29 tool. That completed properly.
At this point, I popped in another battery I had laying around and just let the phone charge for a few hours. Then, for the heck of it, I re-ran the HardSPL tool. Re-Flashed to the .91 radio (it was already on the phone), and then flashed to the latest Energy ROM.
Since then, my phone has been better than ever. Seems faster, battery life is better (Went three days without having to charge it), no dropped calls, and no weirdness with the latest ROM (that I've found so far).
Does it pay to REALLY start fresh from time to time, and re-flash everything on the phone?
Thanks for any input.
I have no idea, but hopefully the WinMo experts will see this and have an idea, so here's a bump for you. Most of my computer expertise revolves around Unix, Linux, and a bit of Windows, not so much these phones.
I do know that task 29 is awesome, though. It seems like DBAN for your phone...
DBAN=Darik's Boot and Nuke. Look it up.
I don't know what happened with your phone, sounds like something broke in the area of booting.
I don't think you should need to re-flash HardSPL radios just for the sake of it, but I'd strongly recommend task29 every time you flash a new ROM.
bricked my TP2
My TP2 seems to have a similar problem which I haven't been able to fix it just yet. The bootloader reboot loop is too short to succesfully run task 29 and flashing it using the microSD gets stuck around 40%
during bootloader mode there's an unreadable errormessage since it's on the same line as some of the usual information.
any thoughts/suggestions would be very welcome since i can't afford to send it to the factory.
cheers.
