Want to double check the unroot procedure... - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so my phone's currently on eBay. I'm leaving the android world and heading back to iPhone land. So I'm going to need to unroot.
My specs:UK phone, 26I radio, 1.33.2005 SPL, Cyanogen 4.04 + 1.4 recovery.
So do I simply flash the RC7 update to get back to 1.0 (it's a UK phone, so not 29) via the SPL (which isn't stock)? As far as I'm aware the recovery image on stock G1's allows the user to flash official updates, so can I just flash the one for 1.5 or 1.6? Does anyone who where I'd find those offcial updates for UK phones?

you want to flash the original SPL first, then you can load up your RC7 and that will overwrite everything else
**edit** I know the official OTA UK cupcake update was posted to Phandroid around May, cause I used the UK version to check out cupcake before it was available in the US

I thought the RC7 NBH would also flash the SPL...at least that's what I read. I guess I can always reflash the stock SPL, I'm just trying to be uber cuatious and not brick this thing...

no the nbh file will overwrite everything excepts your spl, you have to flash the spl first then boot your phone using camera + power to acess it to flash your nbh file, then you'll have RC7, then your phone is back to stock, then you can search out your official updates like rc9 and higher if you choose or sell it with rc7 and let the buyer wait for OTA updates

Ugh, you're right it even says it in the root guide. Thanks!
Now all I need to do is find the uk update.zip for 1.5...

this link still seems to be valid for the UK cupcake update

I was also under the impression that the nbh replaced the SPL as well. I have read many posts in which users stated that they safely downgraded to RC29/RC7with the DangerSPL and didn't brick. Also, the .nbh flash also states its replacing the SPL during the flash IIRC. Anyways, better safe than sorry.
Don't you think that you would get more money for selling a rooted G1 over stock? AND WHY IPHONE :'(

unrooting question

when i first rooted my phone i installed a new radio version. i want to actually unroot my device.
now do i need to install the older radio version?
i know i need to install rc29 and the spl.... but not sure on the radio..
and also since i have never unrooted before... is there a right or wrong order to do it?
p.s. i have searched and i couldnt find what im asking for. please be nice
The RC29 NBH file will include the older radio version so you won't need to flash that As for the order, I'd install RC29 first and then the original SPL.

[SOLVED] Downgrading radio

Can I downgrade the radio from xxx.26I back to xxxx29. Because since the radio update with newest release I get a solid blue LED, my phone cannot find a signal at all and says Sim does not support roaming and all that. I reflashed the radio and same thing still. I read on a blog that downgrading can brick the phone.
If I were to just install RC 29 again will it give me back my old radio and I could just do the rooting over again? Or I was thinking of just going back to cupcake 1.5 and forget the modding thing cause I just like it the way it was out of the box. Advice? Thanks.
If you flash RC29 it should change it back to "1.22.12.29".
The only way to brick your phone downgrading your radio is if you have the danger spl, if so do not downgrade, the rc29 does have the orig radio, in it and is a safe way to downgrade even if you have the danger spl since it will install the factory spl back on also
i was using the cyanogen spl when i flashed to the cyanogen rom. But after i used the dark hero theme i was getting all kinds of force closes.
So I can downgrade the radio and then switch roms? I was thinking im gonna go with the Tmo rooted rom in the development treads.
Cyan doesn't have an spl, you might be thinking bout the recovery image. As long as you have not run hero on your phone you are good to downgrade the radio. To be on the safe side I would run the rc29 so I am back to a clean slate and just re-root it
cool thanks, ill do that.

Rooting a HTC Dream without applying another ROM

I have a South African HTC Dream and did some research on this forum about rooting. I am more than happy with the phone's current ROM with the exception that it does not support WPA-Enterprise Wifi - in order for me to configure this, I would need to root the phone and will then be able to adjust wpa_supplicant.conf.
In all the tutorials I would have to downgrade the firmware (I have not been able to do this with any of the guides supplied - either normal RC7 downgrade, 1-click or Goldcard) in order to root the phone.
Is there any way I can root the phone without having to flash another ROM (i.e. retain the current HTC ROM and make adjustments to wpa_supplicant.conf)? Most ROMs provided are not based on HTC build, and I would loose ActiveSync. AFAIK there is no ROM available which provides ActiveSync AND HTC Mail.
My current phone info:
DREAM PVT 32B SHIP S-ON d
HBOOT-1.33.0010 (DREA20000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-3.22.20.17

There are HTC based ROMs. The ROM from the Rogers Dream has exchange support, but before you flash the ROM you must flash the new radio then the SPL.

Thanks - I replaced my phone with another one (FW 1.1) and was able to flash. I installed Touchdown to overcome the Exchange problems - not ideal, but best choice now.

You're on 1.1?! I would strongly recommend flashing a Cyanogen ROM to get you back to 1.5.
I did update to latest Cyanogen rom. One question: I rooted the phone and am on latest Cyanogen. Only (minor) issue I have is that before the Cyanogen splash-screen comes on, I still see my mobile providers boot-logo (for about 10 seconds until the splash screen comes) - is there any way to change this?
I tried fastboot flash splash1, but get an error. As part of my rooting I did not flash SPL (i.e. HardSPL) but have cm-recovery - should I update SPL and if so which one (also, what is the risk of bricking?).
If replace SPL, do I need to update the radio again or reflesh Cyanogen?
As far as I know you wouldn't need to flash either again, HardSPL is known to be safe on all phones I believe. The only problems I've heard are with Haykuro's SPL. If you haven't flashed a new SPL that could be the issue, what is the error your getting when trying to change the splash?

It should be safe as long as it doesn't not require a specific radio. I have never heard of the radio version you have, but that's probably because you don't have a t-mobile G1. What carrier is it on? If it's unlocked, what was the original carrier? (the ones displayed on the boot screen).
I think Josh is right that it's safe for all Dream's, so you probably could go ahead and flash it, I'm not 100% sure. Just a quick not about flash SPL's and radios on cm-recovery, you have to physically press alt-s then home+back to reboot. Don't touch the trackball. That's only for SPLs and radios.
The hard spl is great, but if u want to run hero u will nees to flash haykuros spl. If u do flash haykuros spl make sure u flash the new radio image FIRST! OR U WILL BRICK! Have fun flashing away
Thanks. I applied SPL from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
And then fastboot worked: /fastboot-mac flash splash1 DOWNGRADE-SD/Boot_images/android.rgb565
Upgraded to latest Cyanogen 4.0.4 and have now an awesome phone - thanks to everyone for the help on this forum!

I had flashed ota-radio-2_22_19_26I (not sure what it was before). I did roughly document my steps on my blog if you are interested.

thanks. after seeing the radio you said you originally had in the first post i remembered that rogers has a radio that starts with a 3(then i searched and they are the same radio), then when i tried to download the root rogers package from that thread it kept timing out the download, so i was just curious as to radio you used. according to all the rogers root thread you have to flash the 1.33.2005 spl first before you can actually root, so basically i was trying to figure out if devices with that radio are immune to the bricking without 2.22.19.26I radio.

Flashing Back to Stock ROM

can anyone give me a step by step on how to flash my ROM back to STOCK?
if you want it for warranty reasons then you will need to flash the SPL also to stock. you can just download the latest ROM from HTC website and flash it. it will give you the stock ROM on the existing SPL.
End of the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2710548&postcount=1.
Remember you will also need to go back to stock spl if for warranty purposes.
i have another problem, when in bootloader it wont change from serial to usb but was a week ago

I've kinda got thesame question. I flashed a stock rom (latest EU rom from HTC site), then stock SPL (1.14) and then the stock rom again. Is this enough to be able to claim warranty without HTC finding out about custom roms/boatloaders?
Thanks

That depends. What was your original rom and spl? Are you entitled (via location) to use the new EU rom, eg if you live in America then this may not be acceptable to HTC.
When you boot up the new rom, are the screen colours ok as this will tell you if you have the right spl for your rom? If you have the latest EU rom, I doubt that 1.14 spl would be the right one, but it could be I guess. With the stock rom, you should also get the stock radio. So provided you have the stock rom available to your area, with the correct matching spl and the radio, there is no way to tell of your exploits
Thanks for your reply
The problem is that the screen of my device won't turn on anymore (Device powers on, I can connect with activesync, digitizer works fine) so i have no way of checking if I have the right SPL or not...
I also have no idea what my stock rom/spl/radio version was.. I live in the Netherlands, and through the official HTC site i flashed the latest rom, which included a radio (a radio version was part of the filename). What I'm trying to find out is:
Could 1.14 have been my stock SPL, or was that version never used on any Dutch Blackstone?
If the spl doesn't match the rom (wrong colours) that isn't much of a problem; I can tell them I tried to update my rom because I thought maybe my screen would work again after I installed the latest ROM... But if I have a SPL that was never even used I don't think they will buy that
According to the wiki there are 2 Dutch roms - one would require a 1.14.0000 spl and the other a 1.54.0000 spl. So I guess either of those would do.
When you flashed the rom from the website, where you still using hspl or uspl? Depending on the rom you flashed you will need to flash the matching spl. Do you have the full notation/naming of the rom you flashed. This should give an indication of which spl you will need.
As much as I appreciate ClydeB1 for assisting you, I fail to see a reason for this thread. A thread already exists for flashing advice, i.e. the dummies guide. Also the HardSPL thread exists and has advice on how to flash back to stock. So depending on your query post in either of these.
The initial query and reason this thread was created has been answered, so no need for this thread to remain open. Thread closed

[Q] After flashing stock (1.6) android, stuck on t-mobile G1 screen

After trying some custom roms I decided to flash back to stock one from Era GSM (network provider that branded and released the fw). However, I got stuck on T-Mobile G1 logo. The firmware was in flashable zip.
On Polish android forums I was told that I have wrong radio and spl and that another thing that may interfere is custom-MTD recovery. SPL is 1.33.0013d, radio is 2.22.27.08.
How do I flash correct SPL, radio and recovery without bricking the phone?
Or maybe there somewhere is Polish locale for DreamTeam froyo or Froyo Melt? Then the problem won't exist
If you didn't already bricked your G1 (sound like you did if you can't get into the fastboot)
Follow the instruction from ezTerry, link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139&highlight=2708
Recovery works. I don't know about fastboot.
I already have the radio and hboot mentioned in thread you linked to. So basically the only thing that I have wrong is MTD-recovery. Does flashing only Amon_Ra recovery will make android 1.6 boot?
That, I am not sure.
any reason you were going back to stock? there are many options to get you back there, which i could help you with but im just curious why you want to go back to aosp1.6?
