fix_permissions file? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to locate the file cyanogen had for fixing permissions. I checked the thread here (dead link) and on his site (dead link). Was he forced to take that down?
I want to run enoch's theme and I am getting tons of FCs, was hoping this would help?

Run RA-dream recovery image.

flashing now, apologies for having to ask, but how does this help? This is the same as his script?

search "fix_permissions improvement" in the dev section. it has the lastest one. i believe cyan is including it in his latest rom (dont know if he already put it in or not)

First and foremost, this should have been posted in the Q&A forum. This is development, not a place to fix your boot looped phone.
Now, to help you. Where did you get this update? Why were you installing it?
I would suggest booting to recovery and wiping your phone. Then reinstall the ROM that you were on and see if it will boot up after that. Or just restore your nandroid backup if you have one. If that doesn't work you may need to wipe your ext partition too. Without knowing what the update was or what was included in it, it's hard to say how much you will have to wipe to get your ROM working again. For instance, if it included a radio update you might have to reflash your radio.
I got this from droidheaven.com. sorry that I posted it in the wrong place
He said he did restore his phone and that he wanted to build a boot.img, so in a way it is devolpment since he is not at a boot loop
Yeah I wiped flashed but I didn't wipe the ext

all of ur questions are already answered throughout this forum, use the search function. but to make ur troubles a bit easier. find a rom on here that is declared stable, reformat ur sdcard with the correct partitions(again everything u need to know can be found with the search function) and just reflash. if u cannot figure any of this out, throw ur g1 into the wall as hard as possible. fixed my problem.

Cyan's latest experimental ROM has a few faetures from Donut and has working Wifi, unlike that donut preview ROM, why not use that?

Too right, I highly doubt they got permission to host any of those ROMs, and that fact that they release them with no information leads to people coming to xda for help.

If you don't know what it is, leave it alone.
Don't just go messing with files all willy nilly. Read through this forum and you'll find all kinds of helpful things, like what a boot.img file is for. Start messing with things like that and you'll be crashing your phone faster than I can type this (and I type fast).
Just leave your phone alone. If you feel like doing some modifications to it, just use some of the stable builds here and don't fuss with them, they are stable for a reason.

Tinkering with things is how some people learn! I completely disagree with your statement.
To the OP, mess with whatever you want, just be prepared to break things if you don't know what they do. Reading and learning is part of the journey, but eventually you are going to have to start futzing with things. When you do, be prepared for failure and technical problems. I bought a spare G1 on ebay for just this purpose. If it breaks, gets bricked, or is down for a few hours, then I still have my primary phone. If you want to start tinkering seriously, then consider a spare phone.
Ok... is there an how to make a rom guide or something.... I searched I couldn't find anything

Updated to ClockworkMod and wiped everything

Ok guys, please go easy on me, I'm completely new. I bought a used Nexus One with CynogenMod 5.05 installed. I was able to update it to 5.06 with a breeze. And now, I wanted to updated to the latest and greatest, CM 5.07. I found a tutorial that referenced using the ClockworkMod, and I figured with a adp install it would be even easier than before.
Here's the real kicker, I couldn't get the clockworkmod recovery to update to the latest CM 5.07, so I figured that a complete wipe (SD Card, cache, everything) would make things better.
Unfortunately, after trying many times to flash/update CM or 2.2 Froyo, I can't get it to work. Do I need to run a .sh file? Keep in mind my Sd card formatted with appropriate file directories. How do I run the commands on CMD/Terminal?
I'm pretty knowledgeable with general computers and technologies, but for this stuff I am completely overwhelmed with all the knowledge being passed around as I just want a working Nexus One for now. Could you guys condense and appropriate which steps I should take? I promise I will come back to study deeper into the unix architecture/Android OS
Could be something wrong with the recovery. When u flash the ROM does it give u any error? Did u try redownloading the ROM and try flashing again?

Please answer Yes/No to the following questions:
1.Are you able to boot the phone into recovery mode?
2.Do you have a reliable nandroid backup?
3.Do you have a way to connect your microSD card to your PC without connecting to your phone?
I don't know what else to ask you.
Depends on the answers above.
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
I'm thinking that you can just transfer a reliable download of the latest stable Cyanogen ROM ([ROM] CyanogenMod-5: Kang Central Station (STABLE) [06/19/2010 / 5.0.8]) to the root of your card, and REFLASH.
You tried that already, right?!?!
hhmm, maybe the installation of ClockworkMod was NOT successful?!?!
What about this?

Looks like you made a mistake in 1 of 2 places
1) Using RSD lite for installing vulnerable recovery (did it flash ok?)
2) Or you did not install OpenRecovery correctly.
#1 requires you to restart with RSD
#2 requires checking that you did the Following:
OpenRecovery zip file contains 2 things : an update.zip and an OpenRecovery folder. You need to extract (copy) these 2 elements to the root of you SD card.
So in your SDCard you should have an update.zip FILE and an OpenRecovery FOLDER.
Then, from the standard recovery menu, you choose apply update.zip. This will start the OTHER recovery you wish to use (to install ROM). The ROM zip files belong (unextracted) in the OpenRecovery/updates subfolder.
Does this make sense?
yes RSD showed me PASS then only i closed it. After which i switched off the phone and then went to the "apply update..." menu.
i also do had update.zip, openrecovery and openrecovery-cfg all three folders.
so do you think is there any other place to go wrong?
moreover the universal androot's APK doesnt look like an setup file in milestone, any idea about it ?
now, let me try the link you gave me.

Try the link, follow the guide and ask again.
Honestly, you don't really need to root using those methods.
The vulnerable recovery + OR is all you need. Most the ROMs you will install have root built-in.
I would make sure I download ANDROIDIANI recovery (it is generally considered the best for Milestone.

I am not certain i understand your questions
1. Wiping : you need to wipe all data (factory reset) if you switch to a different ROM. You only need to wipe dalvik cache and /cache if you upgrade to a newer CM6.
2. ?

First of all thanks for all the help.got everything installed. My mile is working awesome.
When should I do wipe factory reset?
Next how can I get black colored status bar.top one.
Lastly if I have to install a new Tom should I
1. Redo sbf?flash ie firmware flash right?
2. Redo a open recovery. Is there a alternate to this?
3. Guess I can follow the rest of the instructions specific to that rom.

1)
You should do a full wipe only when switching to a REALLY different ROM. Upgrades and version updates do not require this. Also, if you are trying out another CM6 based ROM, you *may* be able to avoid this.
If you are not sure, you should wipe. With options like apps2ext or Titanium backup, wiping is not such a big deal.
2) You do not need to do #1 or #2 for a new ROM. Only flash SBFs if you want to try a stock ROM (like when Motorola releases Froyo) or you have serious issues with the phone. OpenRecovery only needs to be reinstalled when there is a new version
3) To install a new ROM, wipe from inside OR. The 3 options are there. Always wipe Dalkvik Cache and /cache partition when applying themes or updating ROMs. Wipe data for NEW Roms

Won't reinstall packages 2.2

Hey ya'll got a question. I'm trying to put CM7 on my buddies vibrant (2.2 stock) but running into an issue. We got it rooted but when it goes into 3e recovery it keeps giving me the error that it can't reinstall packages even when I put in on the internal memory renamed to Update.zip.
Is there any way to flash CWM through Odin? Or do I need to go back to stock (2.1) and try it that way. From searching it seems like people aren't really having this problem. I can't be the only one.
Any help appreciated
thanks!
have you tried more than just one cwm?
i have several - yellow, green(froyo), blue, purple.
just search for them on the forums they are here.
i think you need green one.
hope this helps.

you need to flash it through clockword recovery (install rom manager and then you can install it through there) and not through stock recovery.

I used this

Option A was the one I used. Option B has the CWR in it but you'll need to have a ROM ready to flash.
IIRC the one (RM) I downloaded from the market was green.

Not really seeing option A or B. IS this option A:
1 – Return to stock JFD (2.1). This is what the Vibrant shipped with. You do this using ODIN.
This is a program for your PC that allows you to flash the stock firmware. Those on a Mac (it's cross-platform too) need Heimdall which I do not use/support.
Wait I see it now. Which one do you recommend I do?
Couldn't resist quoting myself on this one. Sorry and not to be a smartass but...

That is to root it but Option B has CWR in it and then most ROMS will have 3e recovery included. Leaving for the day but I suggest looking in the Q&A section before you get flamed for this over here in the Dev section.

Not everyone gets my two options... I tried to make it easy. B is MUCH easier and faster in my opinion.

Installing it from the market says I need Nand Unlock and this is where I'm stuck at the moment. Do you know how to perform this on the P7310? Or an easier way to meet the objectives above?

I assume you're on a stock firmware. If I were you, I'd flash this specific version which is already rooted and has busybox as you can read in the OP. Also, flash the v2d version of the motley kernel and go here for the USB charging script and instructions on enabling. I know that last link is for the 10.1, but it is the one motley linked to in the v2b version changelog in his kernel thread.
After my soft brick yesterday, I used Odin to "install" the version you attached in your General Guide post P310XARKJ5_P7310UEKJ5_HOME.tar.md5). That's the one, right?
Anyway, the good news is, I decided to install BusyBox without doing the Nand Unlock (maybe it was already done?), and it worked! The wifiadhocenabler app works now and I have a connection to my wm phone! Yay! Before trying the app (for the sake of onlookers) I tried the other method with the wpa_supplicant, such as the one here: http://androidtablethacks.com/android-tablet-hacks/how-to-enable-adhoc-wifi-on-android-tablets/ and it did not work for me. The app did!
So now, I'll try the kernel you posted above and then the USB charging.
I'm going to look over your general guide to see if I can figure out how to flash. I'm guessing it's the same or similar to when I recovered my tab in Odin...?

If you mean flashing a CWM package as the motley kernel, a file goes in the SDcard, you access the CWM Recovery and flash. That's a generic way BUT depending on what you will flash you may have to wipe. That's why I avoided altogether putting generic instructions regarding CWM packages in my guide (instructions may vary between ROM and kernels). Read your flashable package's thread carefully.
kind of like rooting? Yes, do I have to wipe to flash the motley kernel? I'm not seeing the flashable packages thread, can you point me to it?

No, lol. If you want to flash the motley kernel just follow that thread's instructions. I gave you the motley kernel thread link in a previous post. For kernels, no wipe is necessary, for ROMs, yes.

You're welcome. Some people have the tendency NOT to wipe while flashing ROMs...yet complain later on the road. Always wipe when it comes to ROMs if you want to avoid issues. The only bugs you will experience are the ones that come with the ROM already. Better safe than sorry.
Ah, that leads me to wonder...When my tab was soft bricked and I used Odin3 and inserted the KJ5 file into the PDA section, and so on (I think that was flashing), was I supposed to do a wipe before I did that? If so, would it be better if I started from scratch again? ...hoping not, but better now than latter I'm thinking.

No. ODIN clears everything (including kernels, ROMs and CWM Recoveries). Everything back to stock. I was just referring to flashing other custom ROMs (non-ODIN, i.e. CWM flashable) procedures. Stick to the thread instructions in your chosen ROM and you'll be fine. It's just that some don't follow instructions and due to that, they may experience weird bugs.
That's good news, and strange, because after I used Oden3 (in the way I previously described), all my apps and files were still in tact. Does it just affect the system and not the file memory?
P.S. Hey! I'm no longer a noob! lol I just noticed I am now a "Junior Member".
P.S.S. I'm now running my tablet off my wm hotspot while charging it on my pc! woohoo

That is because you didn't check F.Reset Time on the left side of ODIN before flashing. It is advisable to make sure it is checked. Thanks, I'm gonna put that little but important detail in my guide (dunno how I missed that one ). I advise using Titanium Backup (for apps backup) and then ODIN. You might be fine as you are, but if you ever experience something weird then you know.

My tablet is definitely a little laggy now, but that could be the 3.2 HC. Since I did not check that off, does it mean that it did not install on a clean wipe? I'm wondering if I should just do it while I remember the path to how I got where I'm at now. I doubt I'll remember everything down the road.
I have been making nandroid backups as well as titanium app backups.

As for donations, nah it's ok, I am no developer. As for the suggestion, it was just that, a suggestion for next time. Keep that in mind. It will become a habit down the road.

nirogu325,
I'm back to do my clean wipe. I performed the wipe/data reset in nandroid and now it's saying there is an update from KJ5 to LA3. Do you still think the custom kj5 is better than the stock LA3? I'm wondering if I should just install the update, root, install the motley kernel and go from there...?
Hope you're well! I still think you should add a donate link...you don't have to be a developer, your assistance/guidance is equally helpful to the community.
While I'm waiting, I flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375112 and then I noticed I have the old CMR so I downloaded your updated package: GTab89Files and I cannot paste a single file from that folder onto my tab. I can paste files from other folders, but this one I copy and when I go to paste the paste option is not enabled; if I drag I get a little red circle with a line through it. Any ideas as to why it's rejecting?
