Is anyone almost done with an easy way for the general user to root 2.2? 2.2 is awesome, but I don't want to swap Kernels or do any of that other advanced stuff..
1. Flash to stock
2. Install Rom Manager
3. Flash Cognition with Rom Manager
4. Done!

werent you the one telling everyone not to try to update to 2.2 because it was 'a failed experiment for most users'
and you were 'a little ticked off at this'?

Hey all,
I am at the Stock ROM, step 1. But when I install ROM Mgr is states that I must be rooted to use.
As I read this thread, I need to be rooted to move to step 2. The whole idea of moving through these steps is to root my phone.
Am I missing something? Thanks...

just use one of the dozens of 'one click' roots that are found all over these forums....
Yes you can call me out. I deserve it.
But in my defense i tried everything and was at my wits end.
That said, i gave up too early. I tried one more time and just went to bed. When i got up i had 2.2. I dont know if it was Santa Claus or the Android Fairy and i dont care. It works.
Now i have the horrible lag issue and a Quadrant score of 950.
And now i have to face updating again and it spooks me.
Noobs, read the threads that deal with Froyo 2.2 and rooting. All the information is there. I am still a noob as are many others on the site, but with a little bit of reading and asking questions in those specific threads will get you far.
ok so many dumb questions:
I have ROM manager downloaded but it wont do anything because i cant do the Clockwork deal because my SD card is not mounted. I dont have a removable SD card but i do have one ordered and on the way. Does this mean i cant put Cognition on my phone using Rom Manager?

It doesn't matter if you have an external sd card. You must have USB debugging checked(applications - development)
Are you rooted?
Yeah thats the other thing. I am not rooted.
And i know there are a tonne of one-click root deals out there but what is the best and easiest method for 2.2?
Rooting is the part i dont know.

cognition is a rom by itself. if you want to use it, you need to flash back to stock using the odin one click restore to stock and then root it, run rom manager clockwork recovery mode, then install cognition from clockwork recovery mode.
there is no way to go from 2.2 to any version of cognition without flashing the kernel back to stock
the easiest method to do this is to just flash the whole phone back to stock.

the 2.2 one click root that you find on these forums will not work. it was designed for an older version of froyo on the i9000
So i downloaded ROM Manager / and Premium (because i really like what it does so i dont mind supporting him.
So when i go into the ROM Manager and tap "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" I pick the Samsung Captivate and it goes through and then says that it worked (version 2.5.1.2&2.5.1.1) and then i boot in recovery and i get the standard recovery, I try to reinstall packages and it says "failed" along with a bunch of red text, then goes back to the main screen. Is there another way to do this. or is something wrong on my phone?
I'm on stock 2.2 FYI
Feel free to ask questions and also if im just being stupid i dont mind also.
Thanks so much
-Allmaechtig
it helps if you tell us the error message. there are many
also im going to assume you are on 2.2 stock.. right? the error is signature verification
search for [Recovery] 3e Recovery Modded...... screw it,....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
once you have that fixed and temp flash the update.zip, you have to select "re-install" package 2 times in a row.
also once you have a custom rom that has a kernel with CWM built in. you dont need rom manager or the update.zip it downloaded. it will only screw you up. almost every custom kernel has CWM built in now.
yes the error is signature verification.
Thanks ill try that now an let you know if it worked

ROM Manager and CWM do NOT work on Milestone.. Even though it does say it works, it doesn't. OpenRecovery and any mod of it is the only thing that works.
Right now, you have a semi-brick. You need to reflash a stock SBF for your country (to get 3G/data) and then restart the rooting process with the VR, installing OR, etc.
http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone221
There should really be a sticky for this. It wouldn't be too hard, and should be read by all before they flash a new ROM or ask this question
Oh god! Thanks...
So after 1,5 years i would have to start from scratch! :-(
At least i am not using 3g and at least i can use it as a phone...

Regardless, any custom ROM is better than stock 2.2.1, so I would say it's worth the effort to re-root and flash another custom ROM.

Hello. I am new to this forum. I did do searching before I came here. I am sort of a noob so sorry for dumb questions. I wanted an MIUI theme on my phone. I tried MiHome but it doesn't change the UI so I want to get the MIUI ROM on my phone but I wasn't sure how. I know you have to root your phone first, but I read somewhere that MIUI isn't compatible with different rooting procedures like CyanogenMod. If thats true, which one is it compatible with? Is it possible for me to get MIUI on my phone? I have an HTC Vivid (of course) with Android ICS 4.0.3. Can anyone provide me with a guide on how to do get MIUI on my phone, preferably a video with a step-by-step description (yes, thats how noobish I am). Also, what are the odds of me rooting my phone if I follow the steps exactly as told? Sorry for a ton of questions. To sum things up, I would like to get MIUI ROM on my phone but have no idea how. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Alright....you need to do ALOT of reading...I only say that so you don't brick your phone...but here's some info as well as how to get miui
It doesn't matter how you root your phone, you can still flash any Rom...you don't even need to be rooted to flash roms
Cyanogenmod is not a rooting method, it is an aosp rom...you cam flash from cyanogen but our device doeant even have a cyanogenmod Rom (well there is one but it was discontinued...for now)
In order to get miui you will need to do the following:
1) unlock bootloader
2) get recovery
3) download miui onto your phone (can't be any miui...has to be one made for our phone...you can find it on rootzwiki.com)
4) flash miui
More detail:
In order to unlock bootloader and get a recovery I suggest using Hansen vivid toolkit that is stickier in the dev section...its the easiest most newb friendly way to unlock bootloader and get a recovery...for the most part all you do is plug in your phone and click a few buttons...here's the toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003

I guess I'm forced to use my slow PC. Hopefully it won't shut down in the process or else I'll be screwed. :/ Thanks again! I'll let you know if it works out if you want.
Just some ideas , if your pc is slow you can download and of the files you need on your phone then transfer them over to the pc , also if you download the tool kit you shouldn't need anything else but the Rom , if you get s off you will need to do a couple of things , but as mg said do some reading on this subject to kinda get an idea as to what your working with , make sure you kinda understand it so you don't brick your ph. Better safe than sorry .
Good luck and if you have questions there is a lot of good people here and would be glad to help.

Help! I managed to root my phone, which is good. I am currently using WCX. I am not sure how to flash the rom. I tried going to my internal sd card and installing the miui zip file from there. After it reboots my phone, an htc logo loads, then it takes me to some chinese. It has like big chinese words on top in red, then in the middle it has white words, and in between the white words, it loads from 0 to 100 but I have no idea what to do now. It just leaves me stuck on this page! Can anyone help me? Do I need to uninstall the rom then follow a correct process of installation or can I just do the correct process? Also, please don't redirect me to some page, because I did a lot of googling and I found one which would help me, but the site is down. I am sure it isn't a long process. This is what I did:
1. Manually put the zip file into my internal sd card.
2. Rebooted my phone to recovery.
3. Installed the zip file, which flashed the rom.
Is that correct? Can someone please help me! Thanks!

I tried what you said. I am using the All In One tool kit that someone told me to use so I flashed the kernel (boot.img) through that, assuming it is fastboot. I then rebooted my phone to recovery and selected the zip file, it flashed it. I rebooted my phone and it still takes me to that chinese screen. Is there a different MIUI ROM zip file download? I used this one: androidfilehost.com/main/HTC_Holiday_Developers/rafyvitto/MIUI_ICS_V4/
Maybe a different file would work? Thanks in advance!

With the ROM I used, since I am S-On (which I assume you are too since you did not do the wire jump thing from what I read) after you initially flash the boot.img file using fastboot, you need to flash the rom, which you said you did. Then go back in and reboot to bootloader, and flash the boot.img again. It may have been just specific to the Rom I used, but that is the instructions I followed for mine. I hope you made a nandroid before you flashed Miui in case you ran into these troubles....
Hi there, I've read most of the posts on how to root and then install a custom rom on it, but I truly can't get my head around the whole thing and get confused with stuff. I'd appreciate if someone could help me out with a little guide on how to do it, one of the things I can't wrap my head around that much and the reason why I'm making this thread is because I do not know how to make a system backup (whatever it's called) in case I want to go back to stock, I also read that I need a modem and that I should keep a backup of my stock original modem but don't know how to do such thing, I know some ROMs come with a preloaded modem but if such modem were not to work with my phone I read I could just flash a new modem but I also don't know how to do that. I apologize for the noob question, and hope this thread doesn't get deleted without any help, thanks.

2. There's a sticky in this forum with EVERYTHING you need to know. Backups can be made with Titainium Backup or a custom recovery. To use Titanium Backup, you need to root your phone, which there are several threads detailing such. If you don't have access to the USB data function on your phone, there's another way to root without a computer that's currently being tested.

Thanks! do you happen to know how to back up things such as the modem? I've tried searching for such thing here or google to no help.
you can use root explorer or xplorer to copy the files and folders to your sd card. If you copy them back to restore them, you should do a chmod 755 on the files to make sure they are accessible, executable. xplorer lets you do that.
you want to copy, at least,
/efs
/radio
the radio folder contains modem
the efs folder has your phone's imei number.

Appreciate it, this is really helpful and will give it a shot right after I get back from college. I'm going to root before I do the flash guide because I want to do a back up first though.
Just as a heads up, in the link Bwolf56 posted,
9. Click PDA button in Odin and find your kernel.tar file (speedmod kernel (this kernel isn't too important as it will be replaced by custom rom's kernel, but speedmod kernel understands both froyo (amend) scripting and gingerbread (edify) scripting so is great for this purpose to install any rom cwm zip file next.)

You won't be able to boot the phone after this step until you install a new rom. Since for some reason my cappy won't read the external SD card in CWM, I got kinda screwed (my USB doesn't work so I couldn't put the zip on the internal memory [which it does see]).
Shouldn't be a problem for you, but I would copy it over to the internal memory as well before flashing, just in case
Never hurts to be too careful!

Just as a heads up, in the link Bwolf56 posted,

You can't flash a kernel.tar in recovery - it has to be a .zip. Therefor, having it on your sd won't change much.
When flashing Speedmod, your phone should be able to fully boot up but you don't need it to. You simply want to get in recovery to flash the ROM you want to use.
*As a alternative to Speedmod, you can flash Corn Kernel which is made specifically for GB (while Speedmod was made for Froyo). Both works though.

Not what I meant, I was referring to having the .zip on your internal as well. I was going about it a different way anyways, since my USB doesn't work. Had to root on the device, then used mobile odin. But like I said, I forgot to copy the .zip ROM onto the internal.
EDIT: Didn't mean the kernel, was talking about the ROM. Kernel installed fine, but like I say below it just hangs at the Samsung screen after the AT&T Logo. Sorry, I'm at work and not feeling the best right now.
I've never been able to fully boot up since, it just hangs on the Samsung IGH-897 or w/e screen. Tried wipe data etc as well. Still refuses to boot past that screen.

Ah now that makes more sense. Yes, go ahead and have the ROM's .zip on your sd as well as their respective Gapps. That will save you some hassle afterwards.

On a side note, I'd rather not steal the OP's thread with another issue but pm me if you need further help with your phone. I think I remember 4-2ndtwin trying to help you but I guess it didn't work?

Yes, sorry about the thread hijack . I appreciate it, thank you . He did but I'm still not having any luck. Worst comes to worst, I figure buying a new one (since mine had some other issues anyway), and using the one I currently have for spare parts.
Again, sorry about the thread hijack OP!
I appreciate both of your input, and don't worry about the thread hijack, I hope BWolf is able to help you out Xone.
So should I go through with the guide you posted BWolf or should I do that plus keep the ROM on my SD before hand?

Follow the guide but put the ROM you want to use along with their Gapps on your phone before hand.

Thank you. Unfortunately I couldn't even go through with the root, that SuperOneClick thing did not work for me, already tried some solutions from here http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/ including going as far as doing this solution http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/ and it didn't work, still get stuck on Shell rooting device Step#7 wait for device.
Is there a different program that actually works or method that I could use to do the root?
Edit: nvm rooted with this guide http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/483646-guide-root-official-2-3-5-guide.html

you can use root explorer or xplorer to copy the files and folders to your sd card. If you copy them back to restore them, you should do a chmod 755 on the files to make sure they are accessible, executable. xplorer lets you do that.
you want to copy, at least,
/efs
/radio
the radio folder contains modem
the efs folder has your phone's imei number.

I tried this and I got a 'couldn't copy file' message. Then I tried EFS Professional, but it wouldn't recognize my device.

You have to mount as R/W to have the permission to do it.

I managed to back it up with Root Explorer. Tried flashing Slim Bean with the guide you provided, now I'm stuck on the Semaphore logo and can't go into RECOVERY Mode.

So, vol up+vol down+power button doesn't get you in recovery?
Also, did you flash it twice? First time it needs to repartition, so 2 flashes are needed.

Flashed it twice and it's now working thanks, now I need to test the phone function. Btw do I need to root again when I'm on a ROM?
Edit: phone is not working, how can I put back the stock modem to make it work?
