Hi there.
New to the forum and rooting. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and also have rooted using z4 root. I tried installing the kernel SuperFast v1.1.23 and now have a big problem. I used Rom Manager to "install ROM using SD" and selected the kernel zip file that I saved onto the external SD card. It appeared to install properly and then started to boot...however it's just stuck there looping between the words "I896" and "SAMSUNG". I got to the Android system recovery <2e> manual screen and "reboot system now" just takes me back to the rotating text.
when i tried "apply sdcard:update.zip", i get a "E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted." but this option will no longer work anyways because my batter is low.

you need ODIN and to get your phone in download mode....
i dont even know what SuperFast v...... is.
its not a kernel provided here on the captivate forums...so, dont know what to tell you. load up ODIN, put your phone in download mode and flash back the proper kernel
Please take this to the right forum...this is development!

Perhaps that is your problem, you installed an htc kernel on a samsung phone...
Use this to get back to stock and stay away from the htc section.
And don't post in the dev section either, its for developers only.

wtf!?
to the OP, if you really did try flashing an HTC kernel on your samsung, please do us all a favor:
return your phone and get yourself an iphail.
Thanks for the input everyone. And I will make sure to post in the correct section next time!

Actually no. It was a kernel for the Samsung Galaxy Fascinate. I accidentally installed it on my Captivate. If you really don't have any useful suggestions, you should go troll other posts instead. thanks.

also, i attempted to help you out already and DID NOT tell you you were posting in the wrong location....
i am still trying to fathom why you would attempt to load a kernel like that on your phone. i was responding to someone else who said that the kernel was an HTC kernel....
but on the other hand, congratulations on almost ruining your phone!
Ok...so I was able to restore my Rogers Samsung Captivate (I896) back to its original Rogers settings.
Phone turns on and seems to be working properly.
I reinstalled the Samsung mobile drivers from and used Heimdall to restore my phone using the downloaded file "I896UXJI2-homebinary".
So now I noticed 2 issues:
1. The 3G isn't registering/working.
2. Noticed my internaly SD memory has dropped significantly. Was originally at about 16GB, but now down to 1.5GB.
Any suggestions??
just following up. any suggestions on my issues in the post above?
thanks

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

Did the permenant root allow you to continue with the process?
RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

It says that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore roms.
Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck
Hey ya'll got a question. I'm trying to put CM7 on my buddies vibrant (2.2 stock) but running into an issue. We got it rooted but when it goes into 3e recovery it keeps giving me the error that it can't reinstall packages even when I put in on the internal memory renamed to Update.zip.
Is there any way to flash CWM through Odin? Or do I need to go back to stock (2.1) and try it that way. From searching it seems like people aren't really having this problem. I can't be the only one.
Any help appreciated
thanks!
have you tried more than just one cwm?
i have several - yellow, green(froyo), blue, purple.
just search for them on the forums they are here.
i think you need green one.
hope this helps.

you need to flash it through clockword recovery (install rom manager and then you can install it through there) and not through stock recovery.

I used this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 to root it.
Option A was the one I used. Option B has the CWR in it but you'll need to have a ROM ready to flash.
IIRC the one (RM) I downloaded from the market was green.

Not really seeing option A or B. IS this option A:
1 – Return to stock JFD (2.1). This is what the Vibrant shipped with. You do this using ODIN.
This is a program for your PC that allows you to flash the stock firmware. Those on a Mac (it's cross-platform too) need Heimdall which I do not use/support.
Wait I see it now. Which one do you recommend I do?
Couldn't resist quoting myself on this one. Sorry and not to be a smartass but...

That is to root it but Option B has CWR in it and then most ROMS will have 3e recovery included. Leaving for the day but I suggest looking in the Q&A section before you get flamed for this over here in the Dev section.
^ yes, thank you.
Not everyone gets my two options... I tried to make it easy. B is MUCH easier and faster in my opinion.
Sorry about that guys I swore I posted this is the Q&A. Thanks for the help as soon as my buddy brings the phone back over we'll try this.
thanks!
Worked like a charm! Thanks guys!
OK. I started out this adventure to root my phone because I want to use it as a wifi hotspot for my Ipad and not pay AT&T $50/month for that "privelage." I can't figure it out!!!
Phone Info. - Samsung Captivate with Froyo kb2 build. It has the 2.1 adroid when I got it then I updated to 2.2 through the Keis program when it was available.
Before anyone starts with "read and search" lecture, I'll tell you that I've been on this site for a combined 9 hours reading and searching and nothing seems to work. I've tried one-click root programs, I've installed a rooted version of my stock ROM, Ive downloaded more apps, files, or software programs than I can remember. I know how to get the phone into download mode and I know how to boot into recovery mode, but nothing works. Everything seems to come back to the 3e Recovery I have because when I think I am almost there, I get a failed signature error.
I tried the 3e Recovery Mod and that didn't seem to do anything. Is anyone out there willing to help me through this? I am not a programmer, and I don't have any android experience whatsoever, but I can follow direction and am willing to learn. Everytime I find a new thread I seem to get more confused because I'm unclear on the jargon being used, or the thread is on a different ROM or phone so I don't know if it will work. I know "brick" is a bad thing so I don't want to do that.
I any of the experts had my phone what would you do? Do you need more information from me? Also, once I get this figured out, I'de love some recomendation on a better, faster ROM to install.
ANY HELP WOLD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED. Sorry for the frustration.
When I was on the Official Froyo 2.2 the first thing I used to successfully get root was this... View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
This version was the only one at the time that would work. Extract it and run the SuperOneClick application. Be sure to have the usb debugging on.-- Menu /Settings /Applications /Development /then check the USB debugging.
Hmmmm.....very odd. Froyo is super easy.
Do you have Super User showing up in the apps drawer?
AND DON'T USE KIES ANY MORE FOR UPDATING !! YOU CAN BE IN FOR NASTY SURPRISES.
Been there. I'll try it again, but I think it still can't get around the 3e verification stuff. I'll let you know.
No SuperUser as of yet. I guess that is the point. Once I get rooted, I should get SuperUser status.

After u try the SuperOneClick from my previous post, reboot ur phone and then see what u have.
After nearly 9 hours of trying...I have cracked this thing. Turn out there were two threads about the 3e recovery mod. I tried the manual thread with no success. I just found this one that has a one click script to do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Once I did that, I used Captivate One Click Root and presto....I now have SuperUser permissions. Sweet.
Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions. I'm sure I'll have more about ROMs and such.

I tried that early on because it looked so easy. All I get is "Sorry, no codes found unknown error" Is there a way to tell if I'm CID unlocked or not? I haven't done that yet that I know of. I did click the unlock button is Super One Click, but it did nothing. By that I mean the program, nor the phone seemed like anything happened. Early on in this process I found the completly rooted version of my stock Froyo 2.2 and installed that on my phone thinking that it would root the phone. Later realized it doesn't work like that. How do I check the CID lock? I'de like to try one of these cool ROM's I keep reading about.
unless you are planning on running the captivate on another carrier, you dont need to unlock it.
I was under the impression that I needed to CID unlock the phone to flash any ROM not produced or signed by the carrier. I thought SIM unlock was what allowed you to take the phone to another carrier?
As you can see, I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm slowly learning.

CID unlocks do not apply to Samsung phones.
once you have a kernel that has CWM built into it, you can start flashing. nothing else required. you dont even need root if you arent planning on using something like titanium backup before you flash.
Cool.
So any recomendations on my first custom ROM install?
I tried installing a custum boot animation last night and had no luck. I used CWM to flash the file I downloaded, but no change. I tried to copy a new customanimation.zip (I think that's what it's called I'm going from memory here) but I don't have RW access to the System folder. I tried using CWM to mount system and then fix permissions through recovery mode, but that doesn't do it. I'm using Droid Explorer to copy the file but it won't copy. There is a customamination.zip file in system/media so I tried to rename it .zp and it won't take. I assume that is a permissions thing.
I guess I'll try Root Exploer from the market. People seem to be having luck with that.
you cant use a bootanimation.zip on a stock kernel. It just be enabled in a custom kernel.
Go read some more bro. A LOT MORE.
OK. so it looks like I downloaded a custom animation zip file, but I need to flash a kernel that allows me to use the anmation. I ran across a post about that so I can find it.
Was was confusing to me was the uploader of the animation called it "flashable" so I thought that was the kernel and all, but I'm now guessing that by flashing it it simply installed it into the system/media folder for me???
Still looking for any suggestions for my first ROM.
So I just recently rooted my Sprint Hero using z4root after failing in several other ways. I would like to put on a custom recovery and start messing with custom roms, but I am running into numerous roadblocks.
For one, the recovery on the phone is corrupted. I'm not sure how, but if I boot to recovery I get a red exclamation point symbol.
So I tried to use adb and flash_image to install the recovery, but discovered that flash_image is not on my phone.
I have found the binary for flash_image but have not been able to put it into /system/bin in order to execute it. I would have to put adb into root mode to push it directly there, but can't since I am still running Release code. I can't move it from /sdcard or /data because I got a cross-device error.
I did figure out how to run flash_image from /sdcard, but I just got 'out of memory' errors.
I have tried downgrading to 2.27.651.5 since that seems to be the version everyone uses to fix anything, but the ruu fails to install due to Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error
I have been able to downgrade to 2.27.651.6, but that didn't help anything.
I am clueless at this point and feel like I have done my due diligence. Any ideas?
I should also add my current config:
SW number 2.32.651.2
Baseband 2.42.02.10.29
Kernel 2.6.29-ba77cf03
HBOOT-1.47.0000

Have you tried simply installing ROM Manager to install the recovery that way? That's generally the quickest and easiest way to do it, and should set you up for getting everything going.

I looked in the market and saw Rom Manager in mine. Make sure that you flash the recovery 1st and then do a backup (nandroid) so you have your current phone just in case something happens when you start flashing new roms or something. I don't know why you don't show the app in the market. I don't think that Z4 would change your build.prop, but I have never used Z4 either.
I apologize on the delay. If you haven't solved your issue yet check your pm's.
