...it went all downhill. I got the text notification last night around 2am. Boy was I excited! I got up at around 9 and went instantly tapping on the url provided in the text msg... 30 seconds go by and my default browser, Opera 8.65 crank up to bring me to a shocker that I didn't at all expect: Below is the exact message that my eyes saw:
"Beta Request Completed
Thank you for verifying your beta registration. Your mobile phone is not currently supported by Skyfire. We will notify you when Skyfire is available for your mobile device."
wtf wtf WTF!!! My phone isn't compatible. What kinda crap is that. They are advertising all over their site with screenshots of the browser on a freakin' Kaiser itself. So, I don't get it that why is it recognizing my phone as NOT COMPATIBLE.
It felt like my Tilt was robbed of its dream date with Paris Hilton when she's coming right off a wet T-shirt contest and is on her way to Girls Gone Wild hottest chicks reunion shoot.... well, I got a little excited there so let me come back to reality! So, you get the point how I felt at that time.
Can someone tell me wtf am I doing wrong? I could only think of one thing that is that my Opera 8.65 is set to portray as a "handheld browser" and not a desktop one in its setting menu. Could that be the culprit.
To rub salt on my wounds, the freakin text message instantly went poof.. self-destructed upon tapping that link. I did went back to the browser and copied the url with my unique code at its end and ran it in PIE... same result.
HELP HELP HELP!!

I never thought of that... what does a ROM have to do about it not recognizing my device??!!
NEways.. I'm using Dutty's Rom 6 Full version for my Tilt. Should I've upgraded to the 6.1s floating around first? I wanted to wait for the official one to come out first.
It might be using the ROMs device ID to determine compatibility...you might need a stock ROM. Has anyone used Skyfire on a cooked ROM?
Can someone upload this app, or can I download it somewhere?
It says "beta program is currently at full capacity"
I wonder if it isn't the Opera browser reporting your device as something other than what it is (maybe the "act like a desktop PC" option is on?). When you go to the web site your identity string which will include info about your browser, OS and sometimes device will be sent along too. Just a thought.
I am using Dutty V4, got the sms last night, went to the link in PIE, downloaded and installed like a champ. It is working pretty good, haven't had a chance to test it in 3G. But so far its pretty good.

This is not going to work for anybody but invited Beta testers. Since everything is server based with Skyfire it won't run unless you have an account set up with them. Only way you can get an account set up is if you received your invite code. It matches your phone number to it's servers, so if it doesn't reconize that you've been selected as one of the beta testers it simply won't work. There's really nothing anyone can do as it's all server based.
Anyways I would recommend to everyone not waste your time and install this, people from other sites are also saying the same thing as I am.
Its because your loading it in opera... try loading it in PIE. My banking site gives me the same error, but only on loading it in opera.

I've checked that already. Its set as a handheld device in Opera. I even went to the link via PIE and got the same message. Infact I even went there via Netfront 3.5 and no luck there as well....
What really sucks is that no one has posted this same problem besides me which is making my Tilt feel very lonely.. come one people.. stick ur neck outta yr shells..
..oh well!.. Its a big blessing though that Netfront 3.5 came out of nowhere and its basically been running literally FLAWLESS. I've been able to surf sites with such ease that its not even funny.
Damn haven't gotten mine yet.

It says registration failed...that sucks. I got excited there for a minute.
I signed up a couple of days ago. I put my device as HTC Kaiser not AT&T Tilt. I got a link to the download. When I click on it, it took me to www.skyfire.com/mobile/download/beta-at-capacity
netfront is with out a doubt better.

Does Netfront 3.5 support embedded flash like Skyfire? I know that 3.4 did not...
I signed up for the Skyfire beta on 1/28/08 and have not received any notification yet, so I e-mailed Skyfire and received the following response:
Thank you for your interest in Skyfire. On February 8th, we began to release the Skyfire beta 0.5. It’s a big milestone for us and one of many ahead as we march to 1.0. We are happy to report that the initial response to Skyfire beta 0.5 has been terrific.
The number of sign ups for the beta program continues to be off the charts – more than we can accommodate today. Rest assured, we will get to everyone signed up, but initially we have to pace ourselves and roll out the beta in a measured approach. We are inviting beta signs up to download on a first signed-up, first invited basis.
We will notify you by email and by SMS as soon as there is room for you in the beta program. Please be sure that when you signed up for the beta you entered the mobile phone number you want to download Skyfire on. We need that mobile phone number to notify when it’s your turn to download. If you used a different number, please sign up again with your mobile number so we can be sure to notify.
As reminder, first we are supporting Windows Mobile phones in the U.S. After Windows Mobile, we will support the Symbian platform in the U.S. – starting with Nokia N-Series and E-series phones. This could take a couple of months as we continue development and testing. We also hear all the Blackberry, Palm and Linux users who want Skyfire, but the wait will be longer. For our friends in Europe, Asia and around the world, we are working as hard as we can to roll out the service internationally.
To stay up to date about what’s happening here, you can read our blog. You can also refer to our FAQ. Please tell your friends about Skyfire.
Thanks,
The Skyfire Team

well as my first week for android on NAND comes to a close i must say thanks to all for your help. these threads are the best in getting all the answers i need, and thanks also for the quick responses on the ones that i needed help with.
after trying all the flavors out there i must give props to Myns newest Eclair build. that has proven most favorable for my usage. thanks Myn keep up the good work. i look forward to more stuff from all you. and i mean what my signature means. if any of you need a tester, please PM me. i will gladly flash one, work it over a couple days and give you my opinion.
i am still stunned that i can get almost 10 hours out of a single charge and it only 2 hours to recharge. i had many reservations coming from winMO, but now that i have made the move, the reservations now seem trivial. the overall benefits work in my favor.
ok so there are some blue tooth issues, and some other fine tuning things, big deal. overall i give my experience above average marks.
i do have a few apps questions please
1. WinMO had a widget that gave one the ability to check mail and messaging and mark as read from the desktop area without having to open each individual message in messaging. is there such an app for android? i tried chomp but wasnt too impressed, and havent really found anything else to try after that.
2. i am a big landscape user- is there a keyboard that is a little bigger to accommodate the screen and 'clumsy thumbs?
3. there are some builds that have 'free market' does that mean that i can download anything and not pay for it?
4. i have read android will play mp4 video native. is there a free conversion tool out there someplace for a MAC? or maybe an android player that will do mov/avi video?
thanks again for all you have done. i look forward to more.

1. In incubus26jc's super eclair build he includes a messaging widget that may be what you're looking for. If you want just that widget. you can download his build and take the .apk file for the widget and move it onto your sd card or in an androidupdate.tar to install it. (pm me if you need further instructions).
2. Somewhere in the forum someone posted a QVGA/120dpi compatible HTC keyboard that comes stock on the Hero, etc. Many people prefer this and I believe the keys are a little bigger. Just search the threads for that.
3. No. The "free" means no paid apps will show up, only free ones.
4. I'm not sure. I don't use my vogue as a media device but I'm sure with a little googling you could find a solution.

Hi
Would like to know from people who have already managed to get the NODO update
(officially or unoffcially) if some of the problems we faced with our phones have been solved or not..
I Personally have NODO installed following this Link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988672
I have a O2 Uk and lot of O2 Uk users have managed to get the NODO update
( The Above procedure has made my phone unbranded and on to the European version )
Please only people with NODO Post here.. Thanks!!!
I will Post my Experiences HERE
1. Ringtone volume seems to have definitely improved for me
2. Have noticed market installs are pretty fast now
3. Due to phone being unbranded to EU version . It has US version Keyboard not UK one
will update as and when
My First Impressions
I followed the same routine as you to get NoDo on my mobile (o2 user Sick of waiting so unbranded). Personally prefer an unbranded phone anyway.
1)I find NoDo is noticeably faster IMO, quite impressed with the little speed improvements
2) Marketplace much faster to download apps and also found the search is a lot better now
3) US Keyboard & US Voice which is a small issue, but not bothered by these (also saying Cellular instead of Phone Network) However being a GiffGaff user on the O2 Network it now shows Giffgaff rather than o2-uk (small gripes but nice to have changed)
4) O2's Stupid Yahoo Wap Search is gone in favour of the bing search, which is MUCH MUCH better (and we have voice search now, rather than none cause o2 Blocked it, no idea why)
5) Copy & Paste - Just needed, no idea why it wasn't in the original WP7 Rom's right at the start, no idea why Microsoft kept that out
6) Resuming apps & loading times are faster than before
All in all very pleased with the NoDo unbranded ROM.
I waited for the orthodox update... unbranded HD7 using Taiwan Mobile. Update popped up on Friday morning and took just under an hour to complete the upgrade from 7008.
Phone was working 100% perfectly before the update -- have never missed the over-rated copy & paste feature. Have downloaded several new apps (CleverToDo - nice task manager, CleverTranslate - awesome free app!, and CleverTabu). Installs went a bit faster than before, but was never a problem before. Need for Speed loads about 25% faster. I don't send/receive photos with/from iPhones, so can't comment on that supposed fix.
Overall, i love this phone and wp7. MSFT had best keep hardware vendors 'on-spec' and apply enough muscle with the telcons to keep control of updates and this be the premium alternative smartphone solution.
Cheers
I am actually slightly bothered by the sudden region change to US. Does anyone know a way to get these back? I'm not sure it's possible to flash back to the previous, branded ROM.
Other than that, copy/paste is OK, but still no way to call numbers you find on a website for example, can copy it and paste to a new contact...grr. This is supposed to be a phone, you know, for calling people?
Marketplace does seem faster so that's a plus. Haven't really noticed a speedup in startup/resume times so I can't really comment any further.
I have also noticed a possible increase in ringtone volume - but that could be wishful thinking

Can't you just flash to the version Zune will now be offering you? This should be an unbranded but official ROM. I was thinking of doing this and was hoping it would resolve the US/UK issue.
No, I've already updated to 7390 through Zune, and I still have the US keyboard, with no way to switch to the UK one.
...I also tried to enable it in the registry (I'm official dev-unlocked not Chevron unlocked) but then my phone wouldn't boot, so I had to restore and update again. Guess that's my fault for prodding and poking without doing any research
My experience with NoDo:
1) Copy & paste is there, not that i'll ever use it when the OS instantly recognises URL's and phone numbers anyway (apart from when they are embedded or on the web)
2) Marketplace search only searches the area you are currently in (so when in the Apps bit, if you press search, it will only search for Apps). A much appreciated improvement
3) Games/Apps load miles quicker. I was amazed at how quick my games loaded. Crackdown was the most noticable as it is the one i play the most. It used to take ages, but now i'm in the game within 6 seconds of launching it. Great improvement. I'd like to see the difference when launching The Harvest. I used to go to sleep for a bit waiting for that thing to load
Other than that, i noticed the US version keyboard problem, but that is nothing to do with NoDo, that's a result of debranding. But hey, at least the stupid o2 logo doesn't show up when booting the phone now, making it much faster at turning on.
Can you guys point me to the rom you used to get the US keyboard/voice search? I have nodo but with a telstra rom and british accents and no voice microphone option in bing for voice...

Ah yeah I should have realised that! The Zune update is official but is being picked up because the phone is now unbranded, so you get the unbranded update again.
It's a bit odd that the unbranded EU ROM doesn't have a UK keyboard option.
I've written up my experiences of running NoDo - if anyone's interested it's on my blog site:

somewhat satisfied
The app loading time is a little bit faster but not that much and still no multitasking, i can't for example load up my facebook chat and leave myself signed on and do other things. That's very important to me, i can't web browse, text and facebook chat at the same time. the only thing i can do is manage the zune player and chat, but it is irritating that i can't check a new text real quick when it comes and then when i go back to FIM it loads back all up again.
The copy paste is very welcome and I am using it heavily, i copy text messages send to other people, copy web page text and forward it, BUT this copy and paste functionality is very limited. I long for the days when i used to be able to copy and ENTIRE conversation text message string and paste it in another text window, i could copy and paste almost anything in winmo6.x. I hope microsoft is listening and will further enhance copy and paste, to cut copy and paste and to allow the ability to copy and paste more things.
and now because i can't unlock the phone i cannot install my custom ringtones and notifications, file browser and other side loaded, apps, i will be patient though and know the hackers will come through.
the maps have still not been updated, i cannot believe we do not have turn by turn navigation for our phones, i live in a new city and it is absolutely horrific using the bing maps, it just doesnt work like that for me. i almost get into an accident reading each direction singularly one by one on what to do
all in all nodo is a small welcome update to a long road of evolution upon us. may wp7 show the rest of the smartphone world how great a mobile os can be.
I Disagree. As someone who regularly plays games and uses various apps I have seen a massive improvement in App loading and resuming times. We all knew that Multi-tasking wasn't in this update...
The copy and Paste aspect isn't as big a deal to me as it is to others as I mentioned earlier. I've so far used it twice to see if it worked, i personally haven't needed to use it and probably never will. If i ever want to copy a message or webpage, i'll just forward them (for texts) or Share them (for webpages)

Issues after NoDo
Hey guys,
I'm not sure if I am the only one, but since NoDo update (on my HD7) HTC Hub live tile died. It does update the weather but the tile on Start shows the weather before the NoDo. Reinstallation didn't help. I also noticed, when receiving an email, first comes the vibration, 2 seconds pause and then starts the sound. But only the first part of it. Then comes 1 second pause and the rest of the sound. Interesting enough it occurs only when my screen is off. When left turned on, all is fine...
Another issue I have encountered is "antialiasing" of fonts when browsing the web. When the page is downloaded, all is fine. But when I zoom some text, it takes about 3 seconds to sharpen the text. Some pages didn't even work

Hail the Mighty Lords of XDA!
I have heard that XDA forums are the great fount of wisdom when it comes to mobiles/smart phones, tablets and the like, and have come as a novice seeking guidance from the masters. I beseech you to have patience with my (currently) limited knowledge and in return, I will do my best to learn as quickly as I can.
I know very little at this point (though I have found the Glossary and Terminology pages at the Wiki) but I don't mind doing my own reading and stuff if y'all can point me in the right direction. A big part of it right now is just that I don't know who or what is trustworthy, except that you guys have an excellent reputation
I recently got a Dell Streak 7 WiFi only from Amazon.com (no T-Mobile connections or apps.) I'm really loving it, but there are a few things that I would love to be able to change if I can figure out how. Here are the ones I'm most interested in at the moment:
REMOVING PRE-INSTALLED APPS: There are several apps that came with the device that I have no desire to use and would like to remove. I understand that this will involve "rooting" the device, but the instructions I've found on how to do that are confusing and I've seen references to apps that are supposed to do it in one-click, but the reviews have been mixed and its hard to tell if the instructions or apps are for the Streak 5 or Streak 7
SETTING DEFAULT PROGRAMS: My Streak came with 2 email programs (a "generic" one and Gmail) as well as a generic browser. On the home page at the bottom of the screen is a widget that has an email icon, the thingy you touch to get to all the apps on your device and a browser icon. Is there any way to assign a specific e-mail client and specific browser to those buttons?
ASSIGN ICONS TO FOLDERS: When I make a custom folder, is there a way to assign an icon to it as a visual way of identifying it?
GET T-MOBILE'S QIK VIDEO CHAT: While my Streak isn't connected to T-Mobile, they are the company we use for our cellphones. I like the Qik video client T-Mobile installed on our MyTouch4G phones and would like to be able to use it on my Streak as well (so I don't have to maintain separate video chat friends lists and make sure everyone has the right software.
If you've actually made it this far, first off, THANK YOU for your patience I'm sorry it's so long, but I just wanted to get it all out there to start with.
Any other suggestions are more than welcome, as well as links to any other references.
Thanks!
Kriselda Jarnsaxa

Umm, HTC does not have any say in creating the WP7 interface. If you didn't like the interface, then why buy the phone? Plenty of us on this forum love the metro ui.

Cause you can only play and see what a phone has so much in the store, it takes time to really tell if you like a phone or not.
After using HTC sense on the HD2, I assumed that HTC would have a similar interface on this good hardware.
Dont get me wrong, the hard ware is nice, the typing is much better then HD2, but the OS by its self is terrible, just like HD2 original OS, but HTC sense on top of that interface makes it better.
But the OS by its self now, even compared to the HD2, is missing a lot of must have things, settings and features which every phone in today's market, hell any phone in the past ten years market should have.
I kept hearing about amazing updates, but each one is disappointing.

Maybe do some research? If you even bothered to google what WP7 is, you would realize that manufacturers have no say it the software and that it still a new OS.
Don't blame HTC or Microsoft, blame yourself for not taking 5 minutes to research anything about WP7.

You guys crack me up, I did research it, but you really dont get a feel for an OS till you use it, you can watch all the videos you want, until you get it and use it and set it up for what you need and use, you dont get a feel for it.
The tiles I have no problem with, its what you cannot do with the tiles and other settings that bothers me, things not discussed by any one until the phone came out and used by many, I have been following this forum since the day the phone launched, and it slowly turned from "omg we love it " to "wtf is this? problem problem problem.
1. Tethering, yeah I know all the lovers will say "its the cell providers who are against it" wrong, if they were HD2 would not have the feature via third party app, LG has it in all of its new phones, Nokia has had it in every phone it has put out for the past 4 years. The cell providers would prefer you have it since it will increase your data usage, especially ones who dont offer unlimited data plans.
2. Select all - Enough said there, hell windows 3.1 had select all, 2010 OS does not? the predecessor did , why does this one not? Why do you need this feature one would ask? well for the rest of us who use the phone for what it can do and not just spend hours checking on our friends via facebook, when u use email heavily as I do and sms, select all is a beautiful and necessary feature. Again, its a feature that every phone out should have hands down, no questions.
3. Custom Profiles - why? again, old invention that is very very very handy. just make sense.
4. Program view - I thought something was off when i saw how it lists all the programs you have installed, until I disabled HTC sense on HD2 and saw that the original WM6.5 does the same idiotic crap.
I believe in the BC era man figured out that you can display data, much more efficiently when you use columns and rows. Then why the hell does a OS released in 2010 list all of it in one long ass list? Oh yeah thats right, its brand new, give it 5 years to develop, no, not a good answer, again a feature that every phone today should have.
5. Tile Colors - yes i know some one made a program that lets you change them, but do we really have to do all that to have a feature that lets us choose colors we want? hell look at the pre set colors we have, its what my 12 year old niece likes. I was using the phone with the default blue in a public place a girl saw the colors and looked at me like i swing the other way.
6. Now lets get into more advance things -
A. To make a call, you first have to go to home page then hit the
phone area of the tiles then type in a number, man if you in life and
death situation, your done. There should ways be a button to
access the one main feature ( make calls) from any were.
A.1 - Most of us hold the phone toward the bottom, but the
answer and hang up button is toward the top of the
screen? last I checked, over long thumbs are not invented
yet.
B. When viewing your contacts, no alphabet slider on the side, hell my
6 year old nokia had that feature, again predecessor HD2 (thanks to
HTC sense) had it, this one, first you have to scroll to nearest letter
then push it, then select another letter you want to jump to. Why
the extra steps?
C. Email - if face book and gmail is all you got, great, what about
business ppl who have several email addresses? In order for me to
track my 4 addresses, I have 4 tiles dedicated on my home screen.
combine that with contacts and phone, and my screen is full, I
have to scroll more on my home page to find the tile i need then
any were else on phone. ( HD 2, had displayed 14 things for you
on home page) this phone max 6 and you have to scroll. So say
I am looking at one email address and need to switch to anther,
on HD2 simple they were all available right there on the preview
page. On HD7, back to home page we go.
Is that what they call efficiency these days? they keep touting this phone to be easy to use, get what you need faster and move on in their nifty commercials.
I counted, it takes more pushes and steps to achieve what you need on HD7 then HD2.
So yes it has the amazing live tiles, but are they really? when I have emails my HD2 tells me that I have email on home page, SMS? same thing, missed call? same thing, reminder? same thing, so what is the advantage to the live tile?
besides their lack of color options and re size ability? Thats right, when your bff takes a dump and updates his facebook profile that he is amazed at the shape it came out in, you will be the first to know.
If some one would of wrote this kind of a review, clearly stating the pros and cons, I would of never touched this OS, but they didn't, you know why the didnt? cause Microsoft paid very well to make sure the reviews and info was positive, they got a xmas phone to sell. And that they did. (those of you who will say that is crap, Microsoft would not do that, trust me they do, im in a very similar industry)
But i know, you guys are going to flame me, call me a idiot, a hater, and that its a new OS bla bla, the Iphone was bad to when it first came out.
yeah that was 5 years ago, you dont start over, you take it up a notch, and that is not what Microsoft did. Why you guys think they are partnering up with Nokia? cause WM7 flopped.
Let the flaming begin

Didnt care too much to read your long response, because as the other said, research would have stopped you from buying this phone. If you knew what the OS was about, you would have stuck with the HD2.
Anyway, isn't it Nokia who are flopping with Symbian and wanting WP7 to up their phone sales?
I agree to the most of the missing features in WP7 he wrote about.
The wm users are spoiled, they could give their smartphone an individual style and they could customize their apps and design. WP7 is boring in this way. But i flashed my HD2 back to wm 6.5.x, and after one day i felt, that i went back to yesterday. The control of WP7 is modern and in many ways more efficient.
After this desicion i bought a native WP7-Phone, the HD7, and hope for future ways to individualize it. At 1st the start screen... i hope for a chance, to make it more elegant and have a wallpaper background. Then i hope for smart dialing (native, not with a program) and for an email hub with all my accounts. Also i hope, i can create indidual hubs for system, internet, comm apps and so on, so that the start menu is not five miles long and more properly. I hope, to have a chance for a music player, which can open and play my folders...like mortplayer before, and a video player with mpeg and avi support. Also a way, to get advanced memory by using sd cards.
The best way for MS would be, to give back the features of wm 6.5 in a new and modern smartphone with more abilities. Because they made smartphones long, before Aplle and Google woke up. They used the experience of microsoft and give these phones a modern staff and electronic. Why didn´t use MS it´s own experiences and why must they go a seperate way with an unready OS?
So we have to wait, for MS, Chevron and many other creators. Maybe in two years we look much more lucky...or WP is at it´s end.

Tethering on the HD7 is indeed restricted by T-Mobile. Other WP7 handsets on other carriers can tether.

While not a real ctrl+a or select all, the latest update allows you to select as much text as you want by tapping a word, and adjusting the slider. Effective for massive amounts of text? No, but how often do you need to select massive amounts of text on a phone? This method, in my opinion, works fine for a paragraph or two.

4. Program view - I thought something was off when i saw how it lists all the programs you have installed, until I disabled HTC sense on HD2 and saw that the original WM6.5 does the same idiotic crap.

Expect in WP7 the program screen flies in either direction, getting you to what you want fast. Mango will also add the ability to jump to a given letter, like contacts.

6. Now lets get into more advance things -
A. To make a call, you first have to go to home page then hit the
phone area of the tiles then type in a number, man if you in life and
death situation, your done. There should ways be a button to
access the one main feature ( make calls) from any were.

Two taps versus one tap is that much of a deal-breaker to you?

As a right-handed person, I hold the phone in my left hand. My thumb easily taps the end call button, and I did not star in Even Cowgirls Sing the Blues.

Because tapping the Home capacitive button and then a different tile is THAT big of a pain?

I can say with all honesty, that the 20 people I migrated from HD2's to HD7's couldn't be happier. Literally. My mobile support calls dropped to ZERO. No

It also tells you all of this on the lockscreen. Tap your power button, glance at the screen, turn it back off. Also, all these things you mention are on your home page, just like your HD2. Not sure what the issue here is.

You should read Engadget.
If you don't like it, that's fine. However, just about everything you mention here is personal preference, not missing or lacking features.
And here are the changes the updates bring, for the curious...
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/update-history.aspx
HTC sense slows down the device.... i never liked it i was using it on my TP2 and i gave it up as it craped up my TP2, used the energy titanium roms only...
i want to see what you will complain about afte MANGO is out....
some things will not be there on WP7 and the rest of them and more will follow with MANGO update...
Nokia will show there first WP7 device soon.
HTC sense will never be on WP7 devices...
Although I agree to lot of stuff being discussed here (good or bad) Mobiles now a days a more of a personal choice
I went and got the HD7 just to feel how WP7 was as I had never used a WM before having come from nokia symbian and android, I found it interestingly different.
for me the email is the best part of the OS and browsing is a joy on the HD7, but I am definitely looking forward to a NOKIA WP7 as I am sure two heads will be better than one
