Sorry if I sound like a noob but this has been bothering me.
I'm currently running cyan 1.6 after running multiple Hero Roms. With all the new roms being released I want to try them all but I don't know exactly how much nandroid can restore.
Any new rom we have to wipe EXT2/3 where all my apps are stored so does nandroid also back this up and restore or is it just system settings?
Thanks

Nandroid won't back up your apps. It backs up data and settings. You can just back up all your apps to have them on hand so when you wipe your ext partition you still have them.
if you want to back up your ext3 then look for either BART of switchrom in the dev section, a nandroid by itself though doesn't restore the ext3 since it only backs up the phone.

i am currently in the middle of a nandroid backup that has been going for about an hour should i pull the battery? i really dont want to corrupt my card because most of my music is on it and i just bought a new computer hard drive because my old one f*cked itself. Any suggestions?
Ive had the same problem. I dont think you need to pull the battery, I just press call (green) menu and end (red). Then delete the nandroid folder on your sd card and reboot into recovery and try backing up again.
i tried what you said, cause i had the same problem just now, and its still taking long. the only difference is the little dots a coming up a little faster. help?
help? anybody? im trying it a third time right now.. hopefully its works
should not take more than 2 minutes I have had this happen once pulled battery deleted nandroid file and started again and it worked.
ive tried everything and its just not working

Do either of these require any type of wipe? Or will I lose anything that I should backup first?

Sorry for posting here, I realized after I posted it, I usualy read only this subforum, my bad, someone move it please. Sorry again!
Hey, I am scared out of my mind, the whole day i tried to install maxisma's latest ROM and I used switchrom to restore 2-3 times my slacerxs/dwang ROM.
My problem is that I gave up trying to install Maxisma's ROM and I restored with switchrom a ROM of mine and I see the T-Mobile Logo (recovery Works) and them the ROM's loading screen for 10-20 seconds, and then the screens turns black, it is backlighted, but blank screen, and it remains like that .... I tried to restore a even older ROM (original dwang1.13) and it does exactly the same.
What is the problem I really hope I didn't bricked my phone, of course I did all the wipe repartition ext things.
dont do a restore FLASH a new rom not restore you should be fine fyi post this in q&a next time hope they dont flame you to bad

Yeah flash a new rom sign in just to make sure its okay then you should probably be able to do switchrom back to one of your custom mods
Me too
I had exactly the same problem yesterday, no idea what the actual cause was but the only way to fix it was to do a Nandroid restore of a previous ROM.

Thanks, I was 'trigger'(keyboard) happy, thing is maxisma's 2.0 ROM really pissed me off ), right then I really thought i did some damage to my phone through countless flashing. I think imma stay with my custom ROM(if I get it to work) for a while now, this can't be healthy, all this flashing )
EDIT:

In my case by doing a nandroid restore it won't work, I will format my SD now(X-Tremely SLOWW, hard format) and let's hope for the best.
EDIT: SOLVED, a entire format really helped.

I see you hane Amon-ra's recovery which is good. Boot into recovery. Select "Go to console". There you will type "switchrom -s XXX" where XXX is the name you want to store your rom as. Then if you want to restore from that image you type "switchrom -r XXX". Again where XXX is what you stored the rom as. Hope this helps.
Thank you very much for that response now before i restore do i have to wipe or anything or can i just really just restore? So its basically just the exact rom name cool thank you very much gonna try out switchrom =)

No, you do not wipe. I am using switchrom to go between a Donut build and a new MyTouch Slide port. I never have to wipe to go between the two.
Also you can name the restore image anything you want. It does not have to be the ROM name.

Hi guys, first of all, yes I'm noob, but neither I'm dumb or lazy. All I'm looking for is being pointed in the right direction, and some help in understanding how to upgrade the phone to something different than a paperweight or brick, whichever you prefer..
I've been considering upgrading my X8 with a custom ROM, and been reading a lot, but info is still very confusing, and in some threads downloads aren't available anymore. So i decided to create this thread and try to sum all my questions at once... If you could point out some easy guide links, I'd appreciate.
So.. Here's where I'm at.. I already rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader. And now I'm stuck..
I dunno how to properly backup my data (i want call log, messages, images, apps, etc...), neither how to backup my ROM and stock kernel.
Also i find the flashing kernel and ROM process still a bit confusing. Dunno how to safely proceed to upgrade it.
And finally I'm confused in which ROM i should choose. I've looked at MiniCM10 with JB, but there are some minor bugs. I also saw SEMC Debrand Engine, ICZaraki and SonySX ROMs that looked great, but i'm unsure which will be best for me. I'm not looking for flashing it many times, in preference, I'd love to do it only once, and get it right at first. All i want is a fast, stable, bug free, and good looking ROM.
Thanks.
StArt from ics by naa
Just make backup of your rom before doing else ..
And if you want fast and stable.use cm7 or gingerdx ..

1. ROMs are constantly updated when a more stable version has been built.
2. ROM can be backed up in CWM recovery (or TWRP if you are using it). Just go to Backup and restore and select backup.
3. Images that are stored in the sdcard are not deleted unless you format it.
4. It's pretty much impossible to brick (the coma brick) a phone while flashing ROMs. You may suffer from bootloops though, which is what we call a soft brick. Just make sure you factory reset and wipe cache partition (or whatever the particular ROM requires you to do; that's why there are instructions).
5. Good luck.

2. What or What??? Maybe you missed the part where i said i'm a noob, and therefor can't understand all the Acronyms you spell.. And that is a BIG part of all my confusion in understanding most posts.
4. Factory reset i suppose it's on the phone menu, but how exactly do I wipe the cache?
This is why i asked for some proper guide links. I know you probably have been repeating the same things over and over again, and don't want to be one more, all i ask for is proper direction.
Thanks.

Youre phone is rooted right ?you must have cwm or xrecovery installed..to have a nandroid backup just go to
Backup and restore>backup
Then wait till it finishes
Just go to restore option if u want to go back from your working backup

Thanks bryan, yes my phone is rooted but all apps i see are Superuser and Titanium Backup, no xrecovery or cwm...
As for the brands own backup app, i used it already, and i think it backups pretty much all the data i need. If that's enough, great. But i still need to learn how to backup ROM and kernel before proceeding to flash.
Once again, some pointers are appreciated.. Thanks.
everything x8/w8 still doesn't tell me how to backup my stock rom and kernel.. don't i need this in case things go wrong or i simply want to roll back to stock?
Thanks.
Thanks for that help, but which one to chose?
1. Free Xperia CWM 4.0.1.5
2. nobodyAtall CWM 3.2.0.0r3
3. nobodyAtall CWM 3.2.0.0r4
Thanks again!
Wow!!! A lot clear now...
Finally i understand how the backup and update is done.
But i'm still confused with the kernel, sorry.. Is there no need to back it up?
Also how do i choose which kernel is best for me, alfs or nAa?
Thanks.

the choice of kernel depends on which rom you're planning to use. some roms can be used on top of different kernels, so you may have to test them for yourself first.
Thanks. But i'm still wondering about my stock kernel.. Do I need to back it up? Can I download it anywhere if i want to roll back?

Hello again,
I decided to go with MiniCM10, but i want to partition 2Gb of my 8Gb SD card for swap and apps, and i'm a little confused..
According to:
needs a clean install of miniCM10:
flash JB kernel
in CWM, go to mount&storage :
then, format /system, /data and /cache (so that kernel can use the new partitions size) any data on phone memory will be lost
set up your swap:
==> go to /advanced/Partition SD Card
if you don't want to use a2sd, then choose the minimal size for ext, and the size you want for SWAP
it will FORMAT your SDcard ! any data on SDcard will be LOST
and install the rom
swap partition should work
what doesn't work is the swap info menu
Click to collapse
All my SD card data will be lost, is this true? If so, how do i proceed to backup and restore my backups to my sd card?
I also read this in SIII ROM:
how to partition your sd card:
first
download this new link: http://easeus-partition-master-home-....softonic.com/
its free and you need it to partition your sd card or any other partition tool
8GB as a guide just change to sd size
1. back up your sd card to pc/laptop
2. open partition tool select your sd card and resize to 6gb
3. now with unallocated space make a new partition in ext3/4 2gb (make sure that both partitions are primary NOT logical )
4. now format both partitions
5. now put all your files back on your sd card. windows will only see the 6gb fat32 partition don't worry thats fine

Would this be applicable for MiniCM10 ROM swap procedure? It seems so much easier..
Thanks again for all your patience in helping me understand what i'm doing and guide me in doing it right.
Thanks!
been reading more and more about partitioning SD, and i'm even more confused.. I think it's better to consider this thread closed, and i'll open a new one dedicated to SD card operations..
Thanks for all you help everyone!

you need to install proper drivers for your device to work
you can get it from Flashtool Directory>drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe
run the executable file and choose the drivers for x8, fastboot, flashmode to be sure

Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.

Since you're using TWRP then that's the best. Make a backup of all partitions. If there is a problem while restoring try to restore one by one, maybe some cannot be restored, can't say nothing here. But a nandroid TWRP backup is the way to go, yes.

Hey, I backed up the file in steps, cause I did not had a big SD card at hand. The problem I am facing is I cannot backup system image. How can I backup that file? Is it important? Btw all back ups are done using twrp and I just realised that I could have just backed everything up in the phone storage and then copied it all as one file on to my laptop.

I haven't had any experience with TWRP or such things on phones newer than the Galaxy S5. I don't see a point to root or tinker with my Note 9 as it's perfect stock so can't really test if i can backup the system image myself. All things are important in a backup, is it grayed out or something? I'd always do a full 1 backup though, not in parts. Seems easier to restore later.
