Sorry if I sound like a noob but this has been bothering me.
I'm currently running cyan 1.6 after running multiple Hero Roms. With all the new roms being released I want to try them all but I don't know exactly how much nandroid can restore.
Any new rom we have to wipe EXT2/3 where all my apps are stored so does nandroid also back this up and restore or is it just system settings?
Thanks

Nandroid won't back up your apps. It backs up data and settings. You can just back up all your apps to have them on hand so when you wipe your ext partition you still have them.
if you want to back up your ext3 then look for either BART of switchrom in the dev section, a nandroid by itself though doesn't restore the ext3 since it only backs up the phone.

Hmm... You really shouldn't have any problems if you've taken the steps above. Did you have A2SD when you were on Modaco 2.2? If so, you might want to format your card to FAT32 -- that would fix the bootloop.
hmmm
it looks like my ext partition never got wiped
i reinstalled modaco 2.2 and had all my apps back exen after the "wipe" in recovery.
i repartitioned my sdcard and rewiped and am reflashing again...we will see
nope
ITS THE KERNEL!!!
idk what about the kernel but it is the kernel.

Exactly. I did precisely that, Stock - Modaco Modified - then Gumbo, haven't looked back since. It can be done. And I doubt it was the kernal -- do you have any specific error messages or anything that could help us solve this?
no
I don't have any error messages. I did post a copy of logcat on the gumbo Rom page.

Okay. Listen, if I were -- I would run the RUU, go back to factory and begin your process of rooting and installing a custom ROM again, that should fix your problems and won't take you any longer than 20 to 30 minutes at most.
alright will try

Here's a guide on how to properly provision your hero to metro. It's for the evo but it works for our phones as well. I also have a nandroid backup of my hero that I set up to work with metro. It doesn't have any of my info as this exact scenario was what I was planning on using it for. Why a nandroid instead of a rom 1) too many people asking dumb questions. 2) I'm lazy and working on a few other things

A nandroid is a backup of a rom made through a recovery like Clockworkmod or Amon Ra. You need to root your phone and install a recovery to make or restore a nandroid. You can check out this post in the development forum for more information on rooting and the recoveries available for the Hero.
Hope this helps

Hello all,
After flashing CyanogenMod the other day, I decided I didn't like it too much. ( Mind you, I just use my phone for basic phone stuff, so please don't flame me for it. xD ) So I used a nandroid to go back to my original (rooted) stuff.
However, in doing this, it seems that it messed up my Market app somehow.
Whenever I try to search, open, or do anything involving the Market App, it'll say: Attention. A network error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen.
It's been like this for a while now. I can use internet, voice-to-text, and anything else that requires data ( not even WiFi works with Market ), but not Market.
What can I do to fix this?
Full wipe. Fresh install of rom+gapps.
Yea its Me Again With The
Modified Hero
@laie - he said he nanded back to rooted stock
@OP - try the nand restore again? Otherwise you could try adb shell fix_permissions?

It tells me that "fix_permissions: not found"
Edit: I've got it fixing now, will edit with update.
Edit(2): It didn't help, sadly.
I don't even remember, but does rooted stock 1.5 allow you to install non-market apps? If so, go find a market 2.3.6 apk on xda or google. Delete the one you have, boot into recovery wipe cache and then reboot, install the app - see if that'll work.
Nope, that didn't work sadly... Ironically, my Market worked perfectly without the updates installed. Is it possible just to block all updates for the Market apk?
this might work for you. a friend was having similar problem. this is what i did (note, i really really think that it was pure coincidence but...) go to SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS -> MANAGE APPS. locate Market, if Force Stop is not greyed out. then click it, then click Clear Data.
like i said, his was having the same problem, i really think that it may have been a coincidence, but maybe not.

Yes, you need to delete the system app "marketupdater.apk". Also, if you go into settings/manage apps/all/market - can you click the button "uninstall updates"? If not, do you know what market version you had that worked? If so try to find and install that one using the same steps as I mentioned before. If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss.
Also what ngholson just posted is a good idea along with clear cache from the same menu.
I hope you get it figured out, good luck.

Yea and??? He can still start fresh. He posted he did a nand back to his rooted stuff. Which means he can srart fresh. As in wipe data, cache dev-cache and sd-ext. Boot up and then reboot back into recovery reflash gapps. Boot up. Load tb go into settings, manage apps locate market force stop and clear data. Open tb up locate market updater apk. Uninstall. Reboot should be good.

The problem version is 2002306, oddly enough, I've overheard some other people having problems with it as well at a place a friend works. Maybe it's a stock hero thing. I'll revert to an older version, maybe one day this will clear itself out.
Thank you everyone for participating in helping me. At least it was a good effort.

Laie I was just telling you, don't get all frisky. If you read the OP again, you'll see he WANTS to be on stock 1.5. I couldn't tell you why lol. Maybe you forgot (it's been forever) but stock and sense based ROMs already contain gapps. You only flash those on AOSP based ROMs, so he can't reflash gapps. If he wiped and then nand restored it would've restored /system which is where the market would live in a stock ROM. His issue was likely a market auto-update which did not agree with old ass donut stock. Who knows. I wasn't bashing you, and I'm not now, calm down. Hopefully this info helps you help someone later. Peace.
OP- I have ONE MORE idea. Go grab a themed market zip from xda member "pendo" - he has green, blue, and red. They should flash from recovery. Delete your current market app FIRST, and clear cache and dalvik cache in recovery, flash and reboot. Good luck.
EDIT: 2 ideas I guess, copy the nand backup to your computer, find the "marketupdater.apk" in /system/app and delete it out of the nand. Copy that new nand to the same place as the current one you have and try to wipe all then restore that newish one.... I actally have NO idea if you can alter a nand or the system.img it contains, but it may be worth a shot. You could also just give up, and get gingerbread, because it's AWESOME.

@OP - You could also try one of the *ahm* market replacements. like *ahm* applanet or something (not sure how 'legal' they are but...)
also, i know someone mentioned it before but did you ever get your permissions fixed? if not try that too, you can do it from ROM Manager.

I'm really sorry, you're right, I forgot to mention what I'm using.
It's:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Build: 2.27.651.5
Again, I'm sorry for not mentioning that.
I redid everything on it, the only thing I haven't touched is the radio file.
When I tried CyanogenMod 6 at the start of this thread, it had me flash 2.42.01.04.27. Could that be the problem?
And I'm terribly sorry for the delay in replying. Other issues are stealing my time.
Ok let's start from scratch. What rom, recovery, kernel & mods are you using?? Also whats your prl, and are you s-off???
Yea its me again. With the

ROM: Stock (and rooted) 2.1 Eclair.

Android Bios Boot animation
LauncherPro
That's about it. I think it's all worked flawlessly until the radio, but I'm not sure. If I'm missing any info, please let me know.
maybe consider starting completely over. download a new rom, i recommend aospcmod. download the latest version of gapps at the same time. if you don't already have it install ROMManager from errr. damnit your market doesn't work... hopefully you already have it. Open rom manager and install a custom recovery (i recommend clockworkmod) once that is done copy both the new rom and gapps zips to your sdcard, reboot to recovery (either manually or using rommanager) wipe everything. then select 'choose zip from sdcard' (or similar, can't remember exact verbiage) and install your ROM, then before you let it reboot, then use the same option and install gapps as well, then reboot. follow setup and it should work fine.
Sprint ordered me a replacement Hero. On my current old hero, I have everything setup just the way I like it. Can I root my new Hero, then insert my old SD card and restore the backup from the old hero to the new hero? Any adverse effects to this? The phone number will be the same but obviously the serial numbers will be different. Thanks!
Imo just load the same recovery and give it a shot. Worse case you will just have to start fresh. I think you might be good. But I'm not 100% sure.
Just don't forget to make a nand of your stock rom. Hope this helps.

I didn't think about that, I can always nandroid a copy of OEM prior to restoring a backup from another phone. Sounds good I will give that a shot and report back in a few days to let you know how it went. Thanks!
ive transferred my back ups from my computer to my sd card and it worked fine as long as your using the same recovery u should be good. i always keep my back ups backed up on my pc lol.
Nandroid restore (in recovery) is device specific. Not heroc specific either, like, it's THAT device. Now what you could do, and this would be genius. Root and S off your new hero. Open up your nandroid and put the images into a HERCIMG.zip. The images you would want would be boot.img, system.img, data.img (rename to userdata.img), cache.img, and .android_secure.img. Thats all of them, leave out recovery etc. Obviously make a nandroid first of your newly rooted and recovered stock just in case. You would need to also boot into recovery and do other tweaks like fr if you use it, and maybe fix permissions just in case. I am kinda excited to see if this would work.
I know this sounds confusing but I'd love to help, also it would be WAY faster than starting over.
Please please try this and report back. Not only would it work, but to put this out in public forum would pwn.

Ok I'll give this a shot. Just to clarify:
1. I need to select all 5 images: boot.img, system.img, data.img, cache.img, and .android_secure.img and put all 5 images into one folder. Then zip the folder and name it HERCIMG.zip and use bootloader to install it, right? Or do they each have to be done in their own HERCIMG zip and done individually?
2. I need to rename current data.img to userdata.img - why? Just curious.
3. Easiest way to root again? It's been a long time since I rooted this phone. I have an apk called heroroot.apk, still good?

1. No folder, just the 5 images AND a file android-info.txt, zipped together.
2. Thats the way the bootloader reads the data image, recovery reads it different.
3. I've never unrooted. I hear good things about z4 and one click (linked in my thread).
Keep asking if you need, this should be fun. Also if you can't find android-info.txt I can link you one in my db. nvm, here it is http://db.tt/J5IHy5h
Edit: after you root and get a recovery, make sure you nand backup first. I used regaws s off, which is forever btw. You could also s off with darchs, but then I think you'd need to fastboot the images one by one. Or maybe it can hboot flash too?
1. Rooted using one click app in XDA forum
2. Nandroid back up
3. S-Off'ed using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759955
4. Used old Hero's backup images to make new HERCIMG.zip. Placed on root
5. Rebooted to HBOOT. Recognized the HERCIMG.zip and attempted to load. This is where it gets stuck. Does not prompt me to click action button to install, just reverts back to the HBOOT menu screen to select fastboot, recovery, etc. I packaged the HERCIMG just like stated above... What gives?!
Try them individually ? In order. Boot system data cache android secure. You used the .txt? Wiped first? So you have clockwork too?
Edit: any other member feels comfortable/knowledgeable enough to speak up, please do.

Try just flashing the same recovery and radio you were using when you made the backup. If you were s-off then load the same method you used when you made the backup. Place the nand you made with your previous phone into your nandroid folder then boot into recovery via power + home, do a full wipe and see how it goes. If you were using firerats then I'd recommend setting it up first before you restore it if not the just give it a shot.

I spent 2 hours that day trying to get it to work by making sure I had the proper files in the HERCIMG.zip. It still never recognized it =(

Glad this works on case my Hero decides to crap out and I get a new one.
PMGRANDS, not to be rude or offensive in any way, but could you please BB code your signature so as too not take up so much room in a post, as it is pretty long when on the app. I think Il Duce recommend this as well. Once more not to be offensive, but I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
Sent from my Hero that never dies! ;D
