question about our cameras on a custom ROM/cupcake/donut - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ummm...
im using drizzys Blur-Hero-V1.5.7 and it works like a dream now that i finally got a class 6 sdcard...
but when i use the camera it seems like i have to be extremely still and my subjects im photographing do too or i get blurry(no pun intended)pics...
is that all across the board whether you use a custom ROM or stock?
i had my phone maybe a week or two before i rooted and started flashing so i dont remember if it was any better when it was stock...
and is there a hack/script that is out that enables better function of the camera?
i thought i read somewhere in the development forums there was a way to upgrade to a 5mega pixel camera if a certain ROM was flashed...not sure if i read correctly or just imagined it
anyone know what can/has been done or could be done?
thanks!

You can't upgrade the megapixels in a camera, that's a set thing. You can download Snapphoto from the Market, that's a faster camera application.

you didn't imagine it, but it was a joke that the guy posted, and others laughed along with him in the thread.

so the best i can do is snapphoto?
nothing else?

HOla!
Well after getting my 4 tickets to see phish this morning, i started thinking about the video on the phone and how ****ty it usually is. Even attempting to record video inside a concert would pretty much be a farse as it is now. (at least i think most would agree... lighting... distance.. ****ty camera drivers etc)
I thought about the possibilities of running the phone as clean as possible w/ just the camera installed. Would it make a hella difference?
Im not fluent in geek really, i dont think a .cab would work since the os itself would still be running. But it would seem w/ the new google linux, or possible another stipped down OS w/ just a simple phone radio and camera only might give the thing alot more memory and cpu to do the camera/video?

not it won't. Although some of the newer roms have better drivers than stock and than has helped the device. Please read wiki and stickies.

please help a newbie

just purchased a sprint htc hero im wondering what are the advantages or disadvantages on changing the roms and can someone help me in chosing and installing a new rom
Themes. Tethering. Improve battery life and signal. Improve overall speed. New 2.1 features. And VARIETY! Just to name a few...
The advantages are many...it's fun to see what other people come up with, exciting to find new features, cool to check out many different awesome themes....
Disavantages....on occasion you have to wipe going from one rom to the next (but that can be fun too)
.....what ROM to choose, that is going to be up to you and what you like in a ROM....from all the ones you test out on your HERO!!!!
Do some reading and ROM searches my friend, you'll be surprised at all the good stuff you find
And all the info you'll need is at the top of the forum.
Here -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618874
And here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618867
No one can help you chose a rom, it's a personal choice and frankly there are so many to chose from you'll get at least 5 different answers from 10 people.
The advantages are you will get much better performance out of your device and unlock potential that the average person would never know exists. Sprint bogs the thing down with so much crap you would be AMAZED at how much better it will operate when it's all cleaned up Also you can do things like wifi tether (true) and enable the built in light saber (false)
The disadvantage is learning about this stuff and doing it for yourself is so fascinating and fun if you're not careful it will quickly take over every aspect of your life (true)
There are plenty of guides from getting started for total noobs to things like compiling kernel from source code. Check out the guides wiki at the top of the forum, it' one of the stickies. First thing you will do is "root" and backup your phone, then you're pretty much good to do whatever you want and as long as you don't flash a GSM rom on your CDMA hero anything you do after you make a nandroid backup is reversible.
Welcome to xda, have fun!
*edit- LOL, there's a few of us up late tonight I see!
I finally decided to use custom ROM because I got sick of waiting for Sprint to release 2.1 update. There is all sorts of software out now that just runs on 2.1, Google Navigate was the big one for me.
Since I upgraded, there has been other things, speed, the ability to install a virtually unlimited set of apps, live wallpapers, swype keyboard, these are the big things i Like. Edit: Oh and wifi tethering is huge!!
There are some problems right now, you cant have everything at once. and it will take some time playing around to get what works best for you.
One other thing to consider is that when Sprint rolls out the 2.1 update over the air, you may lose the ability to root your phone. You can root now, and when the update comes out, someone here will make a rom from it and that way you will guarantee the ability to have root and still have latest stock sprint/htc software.

Agreed, there are several methods to rooting but you cant go wrong doing it the old fashioned way. You get some great exposure to the inside of your phone and TTG wrote a very good guide. Just follow the steps.
Also in that guide he has a link to the 1.5.2 recovery image, thats a little outdated, you want RA's 1.6.2 found HERE, scroll about 2/3 down the page and choose one of the 4, doesn't matter which, the only difference in them is cosmetic.

N00b question

I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?
Thanks..

get the evo or wait for the galaxy s pro
The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

totally ignore the last part. Samsung is terrible also am I crazy or doesn't need to be in a different section?
I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

both of these statements are completely true.
the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha
thanks for your help. great community here. hopefully i'll be sticking around.

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...

Custom roms are slooooooooooooooooow.....

I'm not new to flashing custom roms in the WinMo world but, I just got my Hero like 3 days ago. I have searched and read about everything here so far and from what I have read the reason for flashing custom roms is SPEED and CUSTOMIZATION.
Well, I have flashed twice and ended up re-rooting and going back stock. I'm not trying to take anything away from the developers because I know it's hard work. I did it with my old TP with WinMo for a couple of years. When I flashed my custom WinMo roms they where ALWAYS faster than any stock rom.
HOWEVER it seems to me like none of these roms for the Hero are ready for prime time yet and from what I'm reading all of the decent developers have crossed over to the Evo so the chance of us getting some decent roms in minimal at best.
So my question is should I just wait till something is released that is more stable or should I cross over as well? AGAIN I'm not trying to take anything at all away from the developers. I expected some differences coming from WinMo. I just wanted to know if anyone else felt the same way. If not, what rom are you running? Is it faster than the stock .6 rom from sprint? Does the camera work?
What ROMs did you try? I've used DamageControl and am now on Darchdroid and have had no issues on either. Both run way faster and have way better battery life than stock. Everything works. There are tons of members here that would say the same thing...
What ROMs have you tried? Any ROM with an overclocked kernel will be faster than stock. All current ROMs also have working camera.
Are you waiting until everything finishes syncing? The first 20 minutes of your ROM experience will be a little slow as it pulls down whatever info you plugged in for Google/Facebook/Twitter/etc., but once that's done your custom ROM will be smooth sailing. I've used Fresh 2.0d, 2.1.2, PureHero, and now DarchDroid 2.7 and they've all been substantially faster than stock. Especially with OC and JIT, there's a tangible difference.
I'd trying something again and let everything sync up. I've been impressed by DarchDroid, but I'm also an AOSP fan.
What roms have you tried?
I use Buufed 2.0b and it is very fast. I used FreshToast 2.1, which was also fast until I jacked with the settings. Others are also fast as well.
If you are describing the first boot after flashing a rom, that may be because dalvik-cache needs to be built...this take a few minutes to do, but it is a one-time thing (unless you move to another rom or wipe your dalvik-cache).

Its not like the developers left along time ago. All of them pushed out a final release before they left, and it was only 2 devs.
Also, they all run smoother then stock. Have you tried damagecontrol? Or try ANY of the overclocked roms. You can get OC on any rom now with separate flashable kernels.
Darchdroid is also the most basic rom you can use, but not basic in the area of customization. Its the only rom not built on htc framework, so there is close to zero bloat and it runs extremely smooth.

Yeah, I am going to agree. As far as overall speed, Darchdroid is the best. I'm also partial to Launcherpro over the included ADWLauncher. I have 7 homescreens full of stuff and it still runs fine.
Which version of Fresh did you use? I've had some issues with the earlier 2.x versions, but it's been pretty stable since 2.0d.
EDIT: FreshToast...I've ran that one for the longest time. The only time it would go slow on me is when I jacked with the settings in SetCPU.

Sorry if I stepped on any toes but, I just tried a couple and got results that where no where near the instantaneous difference you got in the WinMo world. Maybe I should have stuck with it for a while longer....
I did have a little info up on Facebook but I REFUSE to twitter!! LMAO The contacts I have are numerous so maybe that's a contributing factor. I'm not sure. I really wanted a Froyo rom but, from what I understand, it's still in Beta.
I really just want something fast and reliable. I often use my bluetooth for HOURS on end so something less harsh on the battery would also be extremely helpful.

I don't see how I could have "done it wrong" I mean it's pretty self explanatory. I opened the camera app and got a broken TV set in purple and blue on my screen. Everything else worked....just slowly. Maybe a bad download.....maybe. I don't know. But how could someone possibly flash wrong and still get it to run? That makes no sense.

You need to make sure you wipe in recovery before flashing a new ROM. It sounds like that could possibly be the issue.

Flash the custom ROM. When it loads sign into your gmail and give it 5ish minutes to synch your calendar/contacts/mail from the cloud. Once that is completed, you'll want to head to the market and grab "overclock widget" and make sure you're clocked to appropriate speeds.
From then on, the speed improvement should be obvious.

[Q] Help finding a suitable rom?

I know I may be breaking a rule here and if so feel free to slap my hand, but I've been through the forum and have not been able to find the answer to my questions. I'm currently using NoSense Beta 1.04 with pattyboi's 3.4.43 kernel, and I've never been able to get the Playstore to stay operational ( if I need to use it I have to clear cache) and just recently, after really needing it for a class assignment, I found that my front facing camera locks up my camera completely. Looking for something lite, don't really care for Sense yet it is cool, and something that fixes the Playstore and front facing camera. Oh, and video playback must work too. Haven't had any problems there but have with previous phones. Again, sorry for breaking any rules and asking dumb questions, just needing to get this flashed to a stable rom that addresses these issues; if one exist. Thanks.

I think you should check out all the ROMs and kernels available and see what you like best.
