Xperia won't start - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Before going to sleep last night I connected my Xperia 1 with the original SE Charger. Today it doesn't do anything.
I already removed the battery for a few minutes and tried the battery of a friend's X1. But it still doesn't boot.
Any ideas?

Is there a red light by the power button when you try to charge it?

no there isn't even a red light

maybe try taking battery out, charging the phone itself for about 15 minutes. then after that, put the battery in again to try to power it up.
when you charge the phone without the battery, the red light on the power button should be turned on. if not, i'm guessing there might be a possible short circuit.
IF it is a short circuit in your phone, then you will have to send it back to sony ericsson to get it fixed.

same problem

Good morning friends. I too had the same problem. the phone wont start up in the morning.... However, after 3 hours, i tried connecting the phone to the charger and then pressed the power button,,, to my surprise the phone started up. But, the battery is completely drained and its at level 0. I wonder how does this happen. I have kept the phone for charging for whole night but the charge remains 0. I doubt the battery. can any one help?

No brother, i charged through sony ericsson original charger. However, i was doing the same since i bought it.... But it was a one time go and after that this issue didnt turned back. The small remedy for this is take out the battery and, press and hold the power button to drain the static charges present in the circuits of the phone(These static charges are formed due to regular use of phone without soft resetting it(once in every two days)) . Once the phone is free from static charges wait for some time and then put on the battery in the phone and then try to turn on the phone... Believe me, it worked... This is not a phone for me... its a mini laptop integrated to a phone.

There are several threads about this. Search for the "xperia broken red light under the power buttonb" thread, it is very good and has many solutions.

Hello dear friend, I sympathise with you I had this exact same problem and was worried sick for a day and a half that it was dead! the red light under the power button is the battery fail light (as far as i can tell) it goes on for example when you plug the charger in and remove the battery. I've found if you run the battery down to absolute minimum it almost seems like the X1 cant detect the battery any more and displays the red light. I fixed mine by removing and replacing the battery a few times and plugging it into the wall charger for a few hours. keep trying and dont lose heart, like I say it took me a day and a half (with a sleepless night inbetween
Also mine, but after five minutes it's wake up.
Try simply to remove battery, or performe a soft reset via hardware button with the stylus.
Let you X1 charge for an hour or 2 and it will start up again, guess this is when the phone don't get a enough power to start up.
(Guess it can indicate some other error as well but probably just lack of juice in the battery .. )
thanks guys..
it is still not working but i know that the phone it self is OK.
i wend back to the store and they switched the battery from another xperia.
it worked fine
i'm so happy right now. it's charging at the moment, but still not going on, well, i have to wait and see then.
again: thanks for the posts guys
Mind you... it might take a while! I had it connected to a cheap usb charger for a night (which wasn't good enough obviously) and it took me the better part of a morning to get it to life again with the SE charger. I find it most irritating that this sort of thing isn' t mentioned in the manual. At least not where I could find it. Things like a phone that doesn't want to start make you sweat horribly.
I have this problem with mine but still no luck
Been dead for weeks now.... Finding it hard to get a copy of the receipt too bah
Only had it a month too..
It's prolly one cell in the battery that are "broken".
Had that on my X1. There are 3 cells in the battery and if one of them doesn't work as it should, the battery only delivers 3-3.1 volt.
Your phone "wakes up" at 3.335 volt but dies at 3.1. I've been measure it myself.
My phone are now back in business with a new battery, a new batterycover and latest software. No problem if you have guarantee...
PS... Try to avoid one thing. Avoid heat in battery. Lithium hates heat.

You are right, man.
Usually, if you discharge a battery till the very last drop, it can happen that:
A) one of the cell goes beyond its safety level, and it "breaks". That's unrecoverable, AFAIK.
B) the cells gets unbalanced, and you nedd several charge/discharge cycles to get them balanced and fully recovered.
Add to this that Usb charging is usually unable to wake up an almost totally drained battery. This won't happen with a normal charger, but Usb charging voltage is lower than normal (of course, it's usb not home plug!) so it has not enough power to wake up the dead battery. If you leave your device in charge for some minutes, it will eventually manage to wake the battery.
However, I noticed that the X1 has a bad power management. Usually my X1 low level battery threshold varies between 10% and 5%. One week ago, at 10% it just shut down and won't recharge, showing me the red light over power button. Removed battery 3/4 times and charged with home charger, it gets recovered. Try to plug the charger, remove the battery and insert it again, doing all this with the charger always plugged.
In my opinion, that's really annoying, I never know when it *really* has a low battery!

yeah.. i had that with my P990i (symbian uiq3) phone the batter went in 1 day to 50% now it still has 80%
this same thing happend to me last night, i just pluged it to a wall charger & waited for an hour good thing when i pressed the power button it came back to life. was worried then and now its all good.
i had this on my xperia a while ago i think its just the battery is extremely dead.
after an hour of being plugged it in it turned on again
Red Power button Led
Glad to find this info, the red light gave me the chills at first too. My phone blacked out while using TomTom 7.4 on a stock unbranded NL Rom, after it had given me low batt. warnings. Now it's in the 'home plug' charger, sipping juice on the red light... I hope it comes out of it soon. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody has ideas on checking battery cell failure? Or battery diagnostics of some sort? It would be a shame to use a crippled battery just because you don't know it's operating below its max capacity. By the way, I'm not part of the lucky bunch in possession of a multi meter...
EDIT:
As soon as I hit 'post' the notification Led's display charging! And the red light's off of course. Guess the first post brings some beginners luck, hehe. Anyway, thoughts regarding battery diagnostics etc are still welcome!
Encountered this and according to the helpdesk, it's cos the backup battery is empty so he advised me to charge the phone for half an hour without the battery, and then charge it with the battery after that. Didn't work. Called up the helpdesk again and he said for some, they've to charge (without the battery) for an hour. Ok, tried that. But still doesn't seem to be working. Gonna just leave it charging (with the battery) for a few more hours. If still can't guess I gotta bring it down to the service centre.

Remove your battery, wait 3 minutes, insert again the battery. If you have lost date & time info, no, there is no backup battery, otherwise yes, there is.
Well, anyway, sent my X1 for servicing. Over at the service centre, they tried to 'boost my battery' but couldn't get it working. So had to leave it there for them to work on it.
Just had this same problem, cleaned the battery terminals and hey presto...it's all good again..
Regards,
Astoroth
Sent my X1 to the service centre with regards to this issue and they replaced the motherboard. They'd tried boosting the battery but no use.
Same problem.. this is what happened
ok, I came back from work an as usually i plug the charger in my xperia, the baterry left was like 30%, ok, then, I connect in the 3.5mm an autput for a big Radio so i can listen full music... so.. in a while, in my house there was a power down.. really fast one... like... 0.01secs... (like down and up really fast).. in that change my cellphone went down =S.. and sice today never get up ='(... there's just that red light in the power button each time I plug the charger on... any help?.. is the same problem of the topic? :S.. plzzz.. i dont have even a month with this pretty cellphone =( poor baby

My xperia doesn't take the charge!

Hey, dunno if some one had the same problem but my xperia doesn't take the charge.
Its appened when the mobile has terminated all his battery, and know the charge is not accepted by the phone
help me please
Something perhaps similar happened to me, i ran my battery completely flat and then could not switch the phone on even when it was on the charger. So I left it on the charger for ~1 hour and then it switched on fine! The other possibility is that you battery is dead. Hope this helps!
Its not the first time its appened to me, and the first time i had the problem i try a lot of time to recharge it, take out the battery, replace it etc.. and its worked.
But in 2 days, my phone is off :/
My battery is not dead i know, but how to recharge it
I have 2 computers from which I load it with usb cable. For some reason Mac Pro doesn't load the damn phone but Macbook does.
Try switching your "power" source. And sometimes when the battery goes really flat it needs many hours to even boot when loading up. One time I really thought the damn thing was dead for sure... But it came back to life
When you press the power button there's a red light next to volume buttons indicating it doesn't have enough power yet to boot up. If there's no red light then it's not charging at all.

Just leave if plugged-in and it will charge. It takes some time before it will charge if it is fully drained.
Ok thanks for reply
Have no real solution, but have the red light near to the volume button, or in the top of the phone.
But the phone doesn't take the charge at all...
The red light gave the battery charge, only that... have it sometimes and sometimes havent it...
Help me please
2 day less my phone know..
Ok i dunno why but the phone weak UP !
NICE
Ir was connected to the cpu and i presszs the button and it weak up
omg this phone
(Sort of) got it.
I'm not really an xda developer but id do have an xperia.
The same problem occured to my device about three weeks ago. I've noticed that the phone would still charge in the computer, but not by the power net adapter. (it must be broke i guess)
Today i've locked myself out calling the battery flat. I couldnt get it on anymore. After a lot of hassle this was the solution for me:
1) Connect the phone to a computer. Don't try to turn it on! Leave it there for about 15 minutes.
2) Disconnect the phone and pull out the battery.
3) Hold down the "on" button while inserting the battery back.
-- It should turn on now
4) Release the on button and quickly connect it to your computer again.
Hope this helps.
I just remember the red led lit on at the on/off button and the red light disappeared after 5 mins or so and i left for breakfast while it was still in the charger and by the time im back from breakfast, it turned itself on and was charging up

[Q] Completely drained external/internal battery?

I've looked all over. And I've tried everything.
This is what happened to my Xperia. it was 29% before I went to bed. When I woke up the next day, it was completely dead. No lights, no anything. I've tried charging it for 24 hours, I've tried charging the battery through an external charger, I've waited 2 days to power it on again. I've also tried that hard reset trick on one thread here. No go. I'm frustrated. Does anyone know any way this could be fixed and why did this happen?

Is it possible for the battery to just die like that without any warning? My battery was okay before this problem. I've tried it with an external charger and it charges.
It could be the charging circuit itself.
I recall a similar thing happening to me on another HTC phone, sorry I can't recall the details (but it was beyond my skills to repair it, and it was an old phone by then). A friendly technical centre could help you with that diagnosis.
At least you can get a desktop charger that will charge the battery up without it having to be inside the phone , if that is the case.

I've tried charging without the phone. External charger or desktop charger. Doesn't work either.
Sounds weird, but did you try to hold down the power button for a few seconds to let x1 on? Sometimes I have that too when the battery goes empty and the phone goes off. It doesnt open immediately when I press the button, but have to hold down the power button for a few seconds and than release. Try that for about 5 times. If noting happens, than its not the same problem that I have.

Hi guys,
I'm having exactly the same issue as "Jaennil". My battery was at 67% when I went to bed but today morning its dead. I dont know how it happend. Usually I get around 2-3 days of battery backup(on standby). Now my xperia is not switching on. Can anyone suggest some solution for our problem...I am now charging the battery using wall charger, but i dont see any battery charging notifications.
Please help guys,
Thanks in advance.

Xperia Z dead

My XZ died yesterday - I was not able to switch it on.
Pressing Vol+ and power helped and phone switched on again.
WTF? Anyone experienced similar issue?

Yep. It happens when you switch it off and try to turn it on too quickly. Can be fixed with a cold reset, power + vol up.
mines died this morning what was the cause of this
I had Qualcomm Battery tool installed.
Now I have removed it so will see if the problem will reoccur
It happened to me 2 times already. Both times when I was playing with some apps. It must be a software issue.
Mine SGS2 did that too, on some leaked firmware. Had to take out the battery, then.
I just encountered my 3rd instance of this problem... and it's bugging me!
The phone is "alive", but it does not notify you nor wake up. When you call it, there will be a ringing tone, but your phone will not sound nor wake up.
For my third instance, I had a message come in which I did not attend to. My phone died with the LED still blinking (via lightFlow).
So.. do you guys have lightFlow installed too?
I would return the device so Sony is aware of this issue.
Indeed does not sound normal.
Fooled around quite a bit with my Z and did not run into these problems.
Perhaps sending it back while you still can would not be a bad idea.
Just make sure it is not an app causing this before doing so.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Xperia Z Dead
Bought my Xperia Z a week ago and was thrilled with it until it just died yesterday for no reason. Symptoms: battery has drained withing 6-7 hours after full charging, phone was quite hot although no heavy apps running. After full battery discharge it just simply would not charge or react to any action: power button, power button + volume up key: both do not work however long I press them. Dont know what to do, so frustrating!!. Do not want to switch back to iPhone....
Any ideas except than just returning it back (got it in Moscow, while I was travelling for a short trip, would need to travel all the way there again and not sure if they accept returns or exchanges...) ??

I do not think you should discharge the battery 100%.
Infact, I always wait for it to go to 4% a 5% and then charge it.
Did so with my Xperia Play for almost 2 years and the battery seems to be ok still.
If you still can not turn on your phone:
- Plug in the AC adapter using the wall socket and wait for a while.
(I can remember reading somewhere that some devices refuse to charge via USB using your PC if the battery is 100% depleted.)
Hope this helps.
Kind regards, Stefan.

It has been left there with charger for a couple of days now, used both original sony charger and some other mini-USB i have for a different phone - nothing happens unfortunately
That is a serious bummer!
- Does the RED charging led go on when plugging in charger using wall socket?
- Sounds stupid, but did you try another wall socket and leave it to charge?
- Did you try to remove the USB cable from the wallsocket adapter and plug it back in?
(If the USB bit is not plugged in correctly it will not charge aswell, had this with my phone yesterday.)
Kind regards, Stefan.

No, no lights go on, neither RED or any other colors. Charger is 100% fine - it charges a different phone (Samsung S8300) no problem. So it is defenately a problem with the phone.
Same problem. No charging, Hard reset doesn't work.
My girlfriend XZ white died today "power + vol up" helped. My XZ black didn't have this issue yet.
The Xperia U of my girlfriend had this same issue, and it's related to software. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is return your phone and get another.
Because on this state, the phone doesn't even connect in flashmode or fastboot mode.
It seems to be some Sony problem, so my advice is that you don't leave your phone get 0â„… battery for the first months.
I seriously doubt this is related to the battery level being low.
Mine died 3 times and battery was close to full.
Hell.. the last time it died (this morning) was while it was charging in the dock!!
Sony ought to do something about this!
Here's a related post in Sony's post. Maybe make some noise there as well..?

Mine died 2 times within 2 days I got it. The sleeping error which can be solved by holding all buttons for 3 seconds. I then took it off stamina mode and hadn't had a problem so far 2 days later.

I don't think you have to go to Moscow. Go to the nearest Sony service center, and they'll repair or replace it. if it's unbranded you shouldn't have a problem at all. (Unless you've voided the warranty - box and papers are probably needed.
I did the same with my Arc S which I bought in Poland. (I live in sweden)

How do you know it's a solution? Not seeing the problem for the next 2 days doesn't mean much. I saw the problem after a gap of over 3 days.
And to revive it, just VolUp and Power button is enough.
Stamina? I've never used stamina before.. so you can rule that out.

[Q] Xperia Z, Hard Brick after battery drained

Hello, just about to pull the trigger on a new xperia ZU, but i wanted to see if anyone had any tricks for me to try on my Xperia Z. I was running near the latest CM 10.2 without issues for awhile now. Last night while i was bowling the battery died( nothing new happens all the time to me ). When i returned home i hooked it up to the wall charger for about 30 minutes, came back and still no life. I have tried multiple chargers and multiple cables with no luck. Device has been plugged into power all night and all day so far. When i attempt to power on with it unplugged i get the 3 pulse red led. When i hit the power button with it plugged in all i get is a solid red LED. Nothing more, nothing less. Cant get into recovery or anything. Most of the time a hard brick involves a mis flash or something along those lines....any idea what could have happened to mine?

It might be the battery...
Its not advisable to full discharge the battery but it seems that u did it a few times..
The battery might not take any charge as the red indicator means low battery...
Tried a new battery,i know after removing the rear panel n say good bye to water resistance but is worth a try...
Or u can send it to me for free if u wanted to throw it away...
hope this helps...
Had the same thing happen
I had the same thing happen to me. From what I read trying to troubleshoot it seems like the Xperia phones in general can take 30 minutes + after a full battery drain to even register that a charger is connected. I would try just connecting it to the Sony charger for a few hours and see if that works.
There is also a tip about holding down the power button when plugging in the USB charger and continuing to hold the power button until the phone turns on. Unfortunately, can not find the original post right now. EDIT: Found it. http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-T-TX/Xperia-T-Wont-Charge-Turn-On/td-p/252686/page/4
In my case the red light would not even come on when the charger was connected but would come on if I held the power button down while connecting the charger. After I did this for a couple minutes the phone booted and has charged normally ever since.
So its a mixed bag. Try just charging it for a while on the Sony charger or wall charger (not USB). Or try the power button trick.
Lesson I learned is I will not let the battery completely drain again.
Ahhahha it came back alive! I had tried pretty much every trick that has been suggested and it just wouldn't charge or start to boot. Left it on the main charger again last night and still no luck this morning. Again I decided to plug it into my computer's usb port( I did this multiple times already ) and I hit the power button, a backlight came on!!! and then sure enough there was the free xperia logo! I have no idea why it finally decided to power on, but its showing 1% battery so it was truly not charging any of the times it was left on a charger, computer or mains. Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate it!
I know this thread is pretty old. But I'm having the same trouble. Xperia Z got bricked after battery drain. It wont recognize charging, i kept it on charge two nights in a row now. It did show a red LED while charging for some time and nothing else, but now its back to being stone dead. tried holding down the power button trick, didnt budge. I thought you can only hardbrick it by doing a wrong flash/update. dont know what happened in this case. is there anything else I should try or just take it to a shop and ask to change the battery?

man, try with a new battery, here in my country cost 14 euro . Or go in a service or buy a multimeter and measure the current of ur battery. Normal they from service will give u electrosock to bring it to life. And if will dont work i think u must sell it on piece and buy another
Same problem with my Z3 Compact: one day phone became hot and started to discharge rapidly and when battery became empty, cannot charge and cannot boot, only red LED is ON. I changed the battery and phone booted again. BUT when battery was discharged completely, phone cannot boot again, only red LED is on when trying to charge.
Looks like something wrong with motherboard is happening...
Xperia ZL battery completely drained, not starting up
I know this thread is old one, but I am having issue with my Xperia ZL. Its battery drained to zero and then whenever I plug in my charger, screen starts, Xperia Logo pops up, red light also starts and suddenly everything goes off. This goes on and on infinite number of times. Phone heats up but it doesn't turn on. I had issue with my battery, a couple of months back, so I replaced it with new one. If anybody has any solution about this, please let me know.
