Sorry if this has been covered - I searched and googled with no success.
When I try to connect my Diamond as a USB disk drive it causes windows explorer to hang (Win XP SP2) and it only unfreezes when the USB is unplugged.
This happened with 2 different diamonds (I sent the first one back because of another problem) with both the stock Orange UK ROM and Dutty's 1.8 ROM. It seems to work fine on some other PCs. I would say it was a PC issue but it's not an isolated case - I've seen it happen with a friend's Diamond too, on his work laptop.
Edit: I should mention, it sometimes unfreezes and starts working if left connected for several minutes!
Anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks,
Dave

Neither does mine.
Thanks for the responses guys. I didn't think it was an issue that would affect all computers, however I have personally witnessed it with 3 different Diamonds and 2 different PCs so I'm guessing somebody else must know about it.
I don't want to reinstall XP with no idea whether it will help so I guess my next step is to see if any other USB devices could be affecting it.
I think I've resolved it
I had to unplug my WD external HDD. This is a slight pain because it contains all of the media that I want to copy on to the Diamond!
I have tried many times to copy files to the SD card in the Nexus One. I can mount it but it will only stay connected for a short time. It's seems as soon as any other application tries to read it the phone dismounts the SD card. I can tell it to mount again but then whatever program I'm using crashes because the SD card has disappeared in the middle of a file transfer.
I also tried Bluetooth but while they can see each other they both error if I try to pair one with the other.
Not having much luck with this phone. My old HTC Cruise has no problems with this.
Ok, I disconnected and unpaired the Plantronics headset and then was able to pair with the PC, after a few tries. The android Bluetooth implementation seems to be a little buggy. I was then able to re-pair the Plantronics headset.
But I did not know that the Bluetooth conection can't be used for file sync.
How do you all get music and such on this thing? The Nexus One Dock don't even have a data connection. This just seems so odd.
If I take the Micro SD out and put it into a SD adaptor it works fine on the same Windows 7 (64bit) box. I also have a scanner, printer, digitizer, Microsoft IR Port, Bluetooth and numerous flash drives that work fine on the Windows 7 install.
In the Nexus One as soon as I try to run a Check Disc on the SD card it dismounts or crashes the PC. In the USB SD adaptor it works fine.
What is work with the Nexus One's USB and Bluetooth? do you think they will fix it?
I had a similar problem with an older version of cyan mod.
It would unmount the sd card as soon as I started copying files to it but making a new folder or draging files off it was okay.
Have you rooted/loaded a custom rom?
No mods. But I've had some luck.
I had it plugged into a powered USB 2.0 hub and then when it did not work I tried a few ports right on the back of the PC and still it had problems. Then when I was testing with the SD adapter, I had it in the USB port on the Dell display. Just for the heck of it I tried it and it worked. What the heck? I guess maybe some of the ports on the back are underpowered along with my powered USB hub but like everything else I have works fine, including my HTC Cruise. ???
I'm going to try the port that the Dell display is using and the some of the other ports. Seems like the Nexus One is on the edge and you need a "to the spec" USB port. Gots to love technology.
It seems that when I try to connect my n1 to my CPU, my CPU can not recognize my n1 SD card while its in USB mode.
I am currently running window 7 32b. I thought it was my windows that was faulty so reformat my CPU with fresh copy of windows. However that was not the case. So I tried my other computer running windows XP and it picks up the SD card instantly. So I tried a new SD card in my N1 tried it again. Didn't work. I am confused. Everytime I need to transfer files from my CPU to my n1 I have to pull out the SD card. Its strange. All the drives were installed correctly but it will not detect. Other CPU will detect. Is anyone having this issue with windows 7 on your computer. I wan to fix this. Its really getting annoying. Please if you guys have any ideas let me know. I even called HTC and they figured out its my CPU not the phone. And I agree. It works on other windows but not my windows 7.

Make sure usb debugging is checked marked before trying to mount....See if that works

USB debugging works fine. I am able to use adb commands. Funny thing is phone thinks its in USB mode. There's got to be some driver issue or something. Drivin me crazy.

If all else fails...get one of those WiFi file transfer apps. Way, Way, Way faster than transfering through the USB cord on the N1 (tops out at 2mbps).

What's the app call? Yeah I can't find what's wrong. Spent three hours. This sucks.

Try Websharing. That's what I use.
Thx I will give it a try.

Try another PC. My Home PC that I built used to recognize it... then stopped... then wouldn't for weeks... and just the other day I noticed it found it (after a minute).
Today on my netbook (EeePC 1000HE) it gave me fits a few times before coming up.
Nothing really changed on my Home PC really and USB sticks would read just fine, but not my N1. I know I reset the thing many times without success so finding it working was surprising.
One thing I use are my existing mini-usb cables and I picked up these little mini-micro usb converters. Perhaps those are flaky?

Pushed Here From My N1
I just noticed when transfering some files to and from my phone that it seems to be running at usb 1.1 speeds. My compuers are giving me the standard windows "Hi-Speed device plugged into non-HI-Speed hub" message on windows xp. I have tried on multiple ports and computers, so im thinking its a defective unit. Anyone else seen or having the same issue?

Weird - try a different cable? Are you sure your computers have 2.0 USB ports? Could it be that this is your first 2.0 device?
I know what he means. I have a pretty nice laptop and external hdd transfers are fine. But even dropping a 20mb file to the internal SD card seems to take awhile. Maybe its the read/write of the internal installed SD card?

But the message is the opposite from what is being described. The message says the computer is slow, the phone is fast. You are saying your computer is normally fast but the phone is slow.
I have XP, on a 3 year Dell D630 with no problems.

I guess that's what I get for posting when I'm busy LOL. I suppose in that case it might be a bad unit. Mine connects fine on win7.

I got the updated version of captivate from att center with froyo with gps fixed. Now two new issues: I rooted the older one and used titanium to back my datas.
Now with new one, I tried to restore two roadblock.
- Windows driver no longer works with this new version. I even removed the drivers from registry still no avail. (SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip)
Once re-install then I choose USB storage version and driver installs but systems can not recognize the device and appears as unknown device in the device manager.
- One click root application can no longer recognizes this new version. This is the app I used to root and unroot the older captivate. GalaxyS_One-Click_Root_All_Models
However, I believe this might be due to the first problem, the driver is not being recognized.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,
Try a different USB port

Well well... so I guess I'm not the only one with this "unrecognized USB drive" issue. I too exchanged my old one because of audio jack issue from at&t service center on September 3rd. The GPS is amazing but I cannot mount it as SD card. Tried everything regarding installing drivers. I tried all the USB port available on my system, still no go. Uninstall and removing every single trace of registry. Still no go for mounting as drive. The Max I can do is mount as MTP. But as soon as mount as storage, it pops up saying 'unrecognized USB drive'. I have literally invested more than 24 hrs without any fix. Only good thing about this is that the GPS is a killer. I drove from Indianapolis to Louisville and it didn't deviate even for a second from the route even when I sometime reached a speed of 90mph. If anyone know how to resolve the issue of mounting the phone as storage device without getting the USB error, your work will be highly appreciated.

Try a different USB cable. The one that comes with the Captivate stinks. I had no problem mounting my Captivate on my old computer (which is a Mac), but when I got a new iMac, my phone refused to mount. After several hours of screwing around, I tried the USB cable that came with my wife's Motorola Bravo. Damn thing mounted right up.
If I use the stock Samsung cable, nothing. If I use the Motorola cable, flawless.
Give it a try.
+1
That will work for your situation

It has to be something with voltage. My Samsung USB cable (the one that came with the phone) worked just fine with my old computer. When I upgraded my computer, the cable no longer worked.
I did notice that if I plugged it into a USB hub instead of directly into the Mac, then the phone mounted...but the connection was slow and it dropped all the time, so it was basically unusable.
@guyenxda000...try a different cable before you decide it's not going to work. It actually might.
Okay, I had alternative cable in my car and brough home now i can connect. Now, phone is recognized if I choose kite usb mode, and can access sdcard if i choose usb. but still it is not responding to one-root-click application i mentioned earlier. is it not supposed to work with the newer captivates? if not, anyone knows an app to root it? Thanks,

First, make sure you're not mounting the phone before trying to root it. Make sure USB debugging is turned on, then plug in the phone and just leave it like that. The root process won't run if you have the SD card mounted. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers. Then run your one-click root.
I used SuperOneClick on mine and it worked the first time. My build is an 1101, so newer phones might not be supported. I have no idea if it makes a difference or not.
Dude thx for ur effort for help. But all ur instructions seem to imply i am doing first time. If u read thru this post i already done successfully with my older version phone which means i must have followed all the steps u described. if u really meant to hlp can u clarify build 1101 u kentioned? If u do that it cn help me someway. Thx
okay lot of progress yesterday, but hit a roadblock.
changed new cable, i had to put the phone into debuggin mode, which I forgot. Now I tried one-click-root app, it does put the phone into recovery mode, but still fails to root saying e-signature verificaiton failed or something.
went through a hard manual way:
copied the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin into sdcard.
supposedly that should open the terminal emulator in super user mode so that i can mount the /dev/block/st19 into /system as a RW mode, which enables me to copy the other files such as superuser.apk into /system/app folder.
Howeer rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin does not seem to do the job. instruction says after 'spawn child' message restart the terminal emulator which should have turned into # command prompt rather than $. I believe # means enabled to do a root privileged stuff like remounting /system folder. Anyone has hit this roadblock? Thanks,
