I have flashed my phone with new/different hero roms a few times in the past couple days. I have been using hero roms now as my daily rom for a couple months. I have been thinking recently if it is worth using hero and was wondering what other people thought.
Pros/Cons (for me at least):
Pros:
Facebook integration
Enhanced Widgets
Better on screen keyboard
More home screens
beyond that I can't think of much other than just having a different looking UI than most people I know with G1 or MT3G.
Cons:
No Bluetooth
Stability and Performance Issues
Phone not working as it was meant (keyboard slide open etc)
So I am trying to decide if it is worth keeping hero on my phone. I have started to get annoyed with not being able to open the keyboard when I want and not being able to use my nice bluetooth headset.
Any thoughts?
using hiro for your own good is inmoral

look at him, he is too damn nieve
I actually just flashed hero back on my phone after putting cm4.0.4 on for a while so i could watch a little sprint tv. But like I said, I came back to hero. I do't have anything negative to say about the hero I'm running.
*I don't care about BT or LEDs.
*I dont have performance issues (task killer keeps me running smooooth)
*The only time I see a load screen is the very rare occassion when i bump my phone and it opens.
*I dont care about landscape on the homescreen and every app where i have to type, I can open the keyboard and type. Don't see why you're having problems.
It ultimately is your decision to make so I guess it depends on how much the negatives you're experiencing annoy you. And actually, if you wanted to keep hero, you wouldn't be asking.
ummm
sprint tv works on cm 4.04 along with 4.1.999, you do not need hero for that

I'm in the same boat as you. I was a long-time JACxROM user, and still love the stability and speed of it. But then I tried out JACxHEROski, and now I'm addicted to the better widgets and appearance of the UI. It's hard to go back because of that.

Reread his post. He flashed CM 4.04 so that he could try out SprintTV, not the other way around.
hey my bad, we all make mistakes
I agree the widgets are probably the main reason that I stay on hero. Even though the weather and clock are the main two that I use on regular basis. Don't know if that is enough to offset not being able to do the other stuff I mentioned (mainly Bluetooth headset). When they make cell phone illegal while driving in my state too I guess the decision will be made for me.
Side note: For T-mobile the Nokia N900 coming out has an FM transmitter that you can use for routing your calls through your FM radio. That seems like a very cool alternative for bluetooth headsets.
There's a lot about the N900 I'm liking... Too bad it doesn't have a capacitive screen and a faster processor.
I use the HERO roms so that I can use HTC sync. If someone could tell me how to get HTC Sync or an alternative Outlook sync client running on a non-HERO rom, I be tempted to switch.
I believe what you are looking for is called touchdown as your outlook alterntive

It seems to me that the main attraction to Hero roms is the UI. How Integrated into the OS is the Sense UI? Since the Hero's are all 1.5 based, how about starting from a stock rom and adding enough to get the UI running? Would that leave bluetooth support in place?

I agree with JstarLuvsTina. Personally I am shocked this thread is still up. First off most of the big cellular providers are monitoring usage of this sort and will not hesitate to cancel your phone plan if they find you using such software. AT&T is a big one, they have even put out press releases about this on their site. I wouldn't be suprised if you will eventually see such applications blocked from being used on devices and data cards.
blocked? that's nonsense... p2p is legal the only thing that's not is the things the people choose to share... but you don't have to try it. Im just tryin' to help people that are asking for something.

I would because of the legal ramifications as well as the impossibility. How do you "block" an application from being on a data card? You don't block applications from being on a hdd. You aren't blocking it from being on a flash drive either. Now blocking ports an app uses is another thing, but even then, it's as simple as using another port.
Its ridiculous to say that this thread should not be posted... If it’s not illegal it’s a valid topic and a question.
And besides why would someone care about one wanting to run any software on his ppc if its not against the law… (and frankly I wouldn’t care if it was against some law I dont work for the police, but that’s just me and a totally other matter)

Please link to this Press Release. That would be unreal. I pay for a teathering plan and if they started terminating people for using legal software I would imagine it would be a law suite. I use Torrent software on my phone racking up Gigs of downloads and never heard a peep out of ATT. I don't see why this is such an out there request. I want to make this phone like a full PC, with TV out, then a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I had the G1 phone for about a week after having the Wing for 2 years ... I took the G1 back and got a refund. While the interface was ok, and it has alot of potential .. the battery life was horrible and the lack of features for business use (exchange server, connecting to outlook) made it too much of a teeny booper phone instead of something for a professional.

No, but there IS an existing porting thread, already. Although, I'm the only one in it that has attempted to port anything... (As in, not just putting another phone's in our phones to see it run, but doing a full port by compiling the kernel for our phones.)

You can get Exchange on the G1 with no problem. A program called "MailShadowG" from cemaphore.com syncs your exchange/outlook in realtime push with Gmail/Calendar/Contacts - it actually works really well.
I switched from the 8525 Win Mo phone to the G1 and could never go back. I'll agree that the battery life is pretty bad though. But I haven't found it to be that big of an issue myself. The better browser, maps, gps, accelerometer, etc. all make it worth the upgrade. Will be nicer when OpenOffice or some sort of office apps are created/ported over to it.

Try turning off 3G, the GPS and the synchronizing to google at all times when you don't need them and that might help your battery life.
Not sure if this thread is still alive, but I just wanted to say that we've started a porting project at http://wing-linux.sf.net. So far we've got Android working pretty well on the Wing. No GSM, wifi, bluetooth or sound yet, but we're getting closer. Android 1.5 with full touchscreen support (and a mostly functional keyboard) is working.
We've also got an IRC channel on freenode.org for the project: #wing-linux.

i tried this android today. there's version 0.3 worked really good!
then i upgraded from 6.1 to 6.5 and did not install it again. will try it out when there are new updates.

The photo is dark because i used a rc29 android g1 and we all know there camera app sucks!
anyways the graphics aren't half bad! with wifi it keeps up maybe 3-4 seconds lag time. Almost all keys are operational except im having a problem moving with keys "w,s,a,z". Other then that i can press enter and type or o to bring up friends list. if we can edit the app i used im sure we can get things running perfectly! Would work with many other games to.
NOTE: THIS POST IS NEW I DELETED MY OLD WAY OF PLAYING WOW SO DISREGARD MOST REPLIES BELOW.
Whoa... nerd.
Nah Im jk, this would be sweet.
Well this would be cool. I used to just VNC in. But isnt there a G1 app that let you install J2ME stuff? Wouldnt this still work on the G1?
Now give me a app to play FFXI and Im all over that. ^^ But still I may fiddle with this later tonight see if its workable.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it won't happen again Just a warning
Meh Ive been in this battle since Ultima Online and still have it, FFXI "Windower" is a 3rd party tool, WoW same things. The key element that even internal staff has told me is that if your not trying to get noticed, you wont be harmed. Long as you dont try to make it so obvious your using something different.. or trying to script kiddie and be a idiot while doing it wrong... then yea.

So you got it working basically? Did all the steps work or what.
Ok.... so can you tell us how?
I think I figured it out...but I decided to give it a shot using Diablo 2 instead of WoW because of the lower requirements
can u tell us how?
Crap...I completely messed up the joke. When I said "but I decided to give it a shot" I meant to put shot in italics as it's just a picture snapped through the camera. I'm still waiting on instructions again from the OP on how he got it running since he edited his post.

I used phone2pc. If we can get a developer to edit this app or maybe an app like it, I am sure we can work out all the bugs. Most of my keys work I can talk to people I can press a few of the quick keys like "o" brings up your friends list... I can tap the screen to exit out of things and start spells... but i can't walk. What do you think about it? Is this is a really revolution?
I think this phone looks very nice with a stunning UI. The technical specs are nothing special, but this could be quite a hit i think.
thats a savage ass phone, you kno what would be sick tho if you could change the color of all the LED's on it two from blue to like purple or something. It's linux it should be fully customizable like that
I love the look of this phone. Very appealing. I will be interested in seeing more about it.
This would be the perfect MP3 Player. But for a smartphone, I do not know if it will offer the extreme flexibility of any of the four TRUE smart phones: Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, Android.
Does this phone have a file system, etc? Also, does Palm Pre and Palm Pixi have a file system and file manager too?
But I've seen this phone before, and I was excited, and still am.
I just don't expect it to be smart-centric. I expect it to be more like a Zune HD experience with some "quasi-smart" features like on the iPhone.
Original Poster, I think you should compile links on the first post and make this the official ELSE anticipation and discussion thread.
More Links http://else.bz/

But there are a few things I would like to know more about this phone.
*Judging by the Flash Videos, the keyboard on the phone sucks (but there are some pretty cool features). But the reason why it sucks is mainly due to the layout and size of the keys both in portrait and qwerty.
*I haven't seen any file manager. Will it be on this phone, and how complex is it?
*Speaker quality?

Use it upside down maybe!! too bad for you!! Does look interesting, but not entirely better than tab bars and such.. it does have that added sliding left feature and I guess it being capacative would not require much tension from the thumb. I am always up for new technology to push the limits.

Wow, maybe the device will not only have rotate orientation buy also flip orientation. That would be awesome!
It's all going to come down to how they market this phone. It looks great and definitely has appeal to those of us with a technical background and who love customization. But what carrier will they market it to? Can it be customized to settings that people find interesting such as led colors, programs, etc? and the biggest one: WHO will they allow to carry the operating system. Getting google to back this would be great, getting Nokia to make a phone able to support this would be great, but which one will have the advertising budget to challenge Apple and the like to the duel that will occur when this and the next generation of iphones is released? A small company like Access is going to have a really hard time trying to compete with Motorola, Nokia, Google, Samsung and Apple especially.
I'm sorry for reviving a dead thread, but does anybody know the name of this phone and the maker? I think the phone failed to launch and the maker went out of business and that's making it hard for me to find any information on this. A name should help, thanks.
The Linux based smartphone have actually been out for awhile. I think (Don't hold me to word on this) there is one called tuxphone. But I'm not sure if that's Linux based when I think back on it...

I'm wondering if it is any better than the so-so stock Android music app. And I'd love to see if it can be ported to 2.1 easily, ideally for a high res screen like the nexus.

Seriously? And here I was, all hopeful. Now, it's interesting to note that, while it is a paid app, it's also open-source, so no rights to worry about there. A ROM dev could easily include it if he wanted. (Not that it's much better than stock, I'm just noting.)

its actually the htc music app most seen in hero buiilds and ported by stericson (ive never used the phone, but thats whats in the dump). it runs pretty damn smooth too, no fc or long wait time for it to load. gonna try and include it in my next release.

Then again, have you seen how awesome it looks? I'd pay purely for the design

I don't like sunburst that much
Rock on was in the ad but my wife bought the phone and it is htc music but no htc music widget that sux
I now own a fender edition mytouch and I can honestly say that rock on and the music app on the fender share some traits, but are NOT the same app at all.
Rock on is trying to be too asthetic for its own good as the music app on the fender is actually quite fluid. That is the music app that should have been incorperated with android from the very beginning. Of course, this is just my opinion...
Due to the lack of a working computer as of yet, I am limited to what I can search and for how long. Trying to search these forums on a dream within the tmobile 3g coverage, I am asking for a little help on the matter of getting this app out there on the dreams.
Just a request, please consider it...

Maxisma already has. Just ask him what to change in the build.prop. The music app is the unframework-dependent version of the Hero Music app
But that's me asking him to hand it over to just me.
I was requesting for someone to up it for every Dream owner...
If it's no trouble, of course...
So I found a stock fender ROM and removed the HtcMusic.odex and HtcMusic.apk
Signed the apk and attempted to adb push it.
Odex went fine but apk hangs. guessing it won't happen this way.
If I only knew how to make an update.zip for it or metamorph or something...
If anyone knows how to get this working, let me know and I'll post the HtcMusic.apk for you to tinker with. I just tried to mess around with it and to no avail. I failed like the noob that I am. But if I were to have an HtcMusic.apk that actually worked on the dream, I would be able to compare the two and be able to do it on my own next time...
He posted it on his twitter for everyone to use, he's not keeping it to himself :b
found it:
http://www.4shared.com/file/203385226/9210488f/HtcMusic.html
from what I understand, that's the music player, not the MUSICAL app I'm looking for:
Anyone?
Thank you for your attempt but I bet you were thinking the same thing I was last night. 'I'll just pull it from the ROM' well certain things need to be done to that apk that require a more knowledge that what I have to offer.
And I would have never known that he put it up on his twitter cause I don't use twitter. Don't even know what a twitter looks like. But I'll keep it in mind. Thank you for the help but let's get this out there...

I get :
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK]
From that =/
Same. Failure. Needs to be ported I'm assuming...
That's the file/tweet from Maxisma. I haven't tried it. Thanks for testing...
