[PLEASE HELP] Stuck in firmware 1.6 without root - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently updated my phone from 4.1 CM to 4.1.9 CM, and it was extreamly laggy so i just went to back to the old 4.04 CM which was fastest for me.
Everything is working fine except i can't get calls, i can call other people but they can't call me i could also get texts too.
When i call my phone, i just get a voicemail
Help please!

Okay, i took some risk and tried to fix it myself because noone would reply or help me.
Flashed the Android 1.6 Recovery Image (http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3) thinking that it was the problem that i can't get calls...so i flashed it and rebooted, it wouldn't get pass the G1 logo so i wiped and it rebooted in to android 1.6 firmware, i have no root and wifi doesn't even work so the market doesn't work for me. I tried going to back to the recovery menu...and i find out that its the default recovery menu with the exclamation point, great...I tried updating to CM but everytime i do i get "update aborted"
adb shell still work for me though...so i installed Recovery Flasher in hopes that i will give Cyanogen Recovery 1.4, but it doesn't work...i press the backup recovery image button and i get "backup FAILED." and when i press flash cyanogen recovery 1.4 i get "flash FAILED."
Anyone on this forum that can help..please do.
Thank you.

well, one choice would be to put the rc2 or 7 depending on where in the world you are after extracting the dreaimg.nbh inside on the main folder of your sdcard and then enter the bootloader by holding camera and power and then root again on stock android

yup you can confirm you still have root by creating an adb shell session

My old G1 had issues like this at one point - I flashed RC29 and re-rooted the phone and everything worked fine afterwards, then you should be able to start over and install whatever recovery image and firmware you like.

Need help.

Okay for those of you who don't know, I totally bricked my phone based on a dumb decision last time and not knowing what I was doing.
I am thinking off trying to root my phone again, any advice on what rom I should root to and which is the best and most stable for the G1.

u should really go with cyanogens roms
Cyanogen's latest is pretty sweet. As long as you follow the steps correctly to root your phone, you shouldn't have any problems flashing any of the roms available. Then you can test them out, and see what you like.
does anyone know any good tuts to use to do so?

Thank you so much everyone! You all were a huge help. I have rooted my phone successfully this time and I love it!
I followed the instructions from the link on this thread to put cyanogen on my g1 but after the skateboarding android logo faded all I got was a illuminated phone I let it sit that way for 25 minutes hoping something would happen but nada so I restored a backup. Can anyone tell me what went wrong and how I can get cyanogen working?
Nobody can tell you what went wrong since we don't know what step you skipped/didn't do right based off that statement. All we can say is follow the guide to a T. The guides are the best the communitty has to offer/has produced on how to do what you want to do. If you can't follow the guide, sadly there is nothing we can do to help beyond repeating what the guide already says.
I've got cm recovery 1.4 so that step and the ones leading to it are done right, right? Then I ran the recovery, made a back up, wiped data, applied zip drc83 defanged, applied
Cm update 4.2.13 (I think 13, whatever stable version the "latest version" link give you), applied ota radio, and rebooted (automatically took me back to recovery) rebooted again, got g1 logo followed by the cyanogen android logo once that faded all the lights on my phone came on and stayed on and I had no display (apart from the backlight).
I tried multiple times with no luck. I downloaded the cm update from my phone could that of caused a problem? Everything else was dl'ed from a pc.
What's the differance between drc83 and signed dream devphone should I try that instead?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679
Follow the guide to a T, since you are partialy there I will tell you what you have left:
1. Download the developer recovery ROM (This is different than drc83 by a lot)
2. Download the latest CM
3. Put both on the root of your SD card
4. Boot into recovery mode, flash the developer ROM, then flash the latest CM
5. Use the "Home" and "Back" buttons to reboot the phone
6. Tada! Success!
7. Never, ever, do anything the guide doesn't tell you to do. If it says flash file X don't flash file Y because you think it is close enough. Never do extra stuff, ie if it doesn't say flash a radio by itself, don't flash a radio by itself because it seems like a good idea.

CONFUSED N1 Owner

Hello folks,
Well I recently made the switch from iPhone OS to Android , picked up a used Nexus One in pretty good shape, no scratches, like new and what not, the phone is amazing BUT I am having a hard time understanding some stuff (I thought I was getting a stock N1, and it seems it has been loaded w/ custom ROM and is rooted and unlocked. -which not bad in my opinion, but...
I still have some questions, I am trying to update to Froyo 2.2, and im not sure if I will ever get OTA since the phone has been messed around with and if i manually update to 2.2 it will cause trouble.
1) When I boot the phone it shows the "lock" to be opened, so I am assuming it is oem unlocked, the phone has working WiFi tethering (just like in 2.2)
2) also in the menu of the phone there is an app "superuser permission" which thats why assume the phone is also rooted
And finally In the "About phone" I get the following:
firmware 2.1-update1
baseband
32.36.00.28h_4.06.00.12_7
kernel
2.6.34-cyanogenmod
mod version
cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3
build
epe54b
I have reset the phone to factory settings, but the same info comes up everytime. the phone runs flawless, no lags, overall i love the phone.
And finally if anybody knows please feel free to share, I am trying to open port 80 on the N1 while it is running Wifi tethering and the only way i have found to do this is if the N1 is rooted, correct me if im wrong... i have a rovio that is refusing to connect to the N1s network...
Any positive input will be highly appreciated! thanks!
Your not very confused!
Your phone is unlocked and has root. its running cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3.
You can install a custom froyo rom without too much of a problem from recovery. Remember to nandroid-backup everything from recovery first.
Get into recovery by holding down the volume down button as you press the power button to power on the phone.
Heres an example of tethering via usb/forwarded port
http://blog.tangorangers.com/2009/02/tetherbot_android_and_slackware_how_to/
you can install 2.2 with no problem but you have to manually do it. you might get a notification for ota's but you won't be able to install them. just install it manually.
Man you guys are awesome! thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yeah man, you're money. For a used phone it is set up in possibly the best way possible for someone new to android and ready for you to throw the new CM6 ROM on there. You even have the proper radio already. You're good to go.
You can install Froyo in various ways. If you want total stock you can follow the instructions on this link and let OTA froyo install itself. If you need root you can download that from HERE
This method requires SDK installed with Fastboot on your computer with mandatory USB Drivers.
Or you can go the very easy way and use ROMs that is allready cooked, ready to flash in recovery right over your old ROM, like the link that is in my signature. It works great for me and is pretty much stock with root and a couple of extras you can delete via ADB if you don't need them..
Just download the Rom, drop it on the root of your SD Card and flash away in Recovery. all done!
What you are running is a test version of Cyanogen which is not the stable version. So it seems the previous owner didn't bother flashing it.

are u running 2.2+ android ?
honestly I'm running CM6.1 final with 2708 kernel/hack
I never tried installing manually and created the flashable update and it worked like a charm on CM6.1 Final 2708
It simply replace Vending.apk to the newest version and chmod 644 /system/app/Vending.apk also...
You do need a recovery that accept test-keys AKA rooted & unlocked BUT why aren't rooted yet ?
Thank you
This looks great. No problems I just flashed and it works great!
I got this to work by going into "Titanium Backup" and on the MARKET app, chose the wipe data button, then un-installed the old version of "Market".
Then I rebooted and ran the update.zip and it worked!
Hope this works for you!

I did even release a 2.3 sdk port to G1 since so much ppl were kindly asking for it
Nothing worth a mention IMO lol
I'm gonna give a few of my spare time to G1 dev <3 paste your adb logcat on pastebin so I can check
That would really help

does anyone have a flashable version of the froyo market so i wont have to wipe? thanx in advance
I'm wondering how to flash this onto a phone o.o
I'm new to the flashing, rooting etc stuff ><
Edit : Continued searching and found out it has to do with recovery mode. Just cant figure out how to switch to recovery on galaxy 3
Did a nand backup, flashed the zip, rebooted, FC on Market before even launching, launched Market and a white screen. Restored from nand to get back up. Running OTA 2.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811620)
Any ideas? Manual installation via ADB?
To save you the trouble of putting the adb method , you can refer to my post .
It does the same thing but manually and its working for sure (Eclairs and Froyo ) : )

I just got this OTA update for market. I just backed up my old market, then installed this from the SD like a regular app. I didn't have any problems or need special permissions. Maybe someone could try this if they're having problems with the flashable or adb.
Two threads?
Ok so someone else started a thread for this in the development section which I thought to be weird, just wanted you to know, here is the thread. Personally I would rather just have one, yours : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872526

did exactly what he did here, nd works like a charm
is this flashable to sd card? I have cyanogen 6.1.0 android 2.2(froyo). Its probably a dumb question. But I'm asking this because theres another thread which indicated on his post that he didn't make his flashable. And its similar to this except that one runs on adb. So I'm wondering if this is flashable?

same rom..same problem
even doing adb doesnt work
Okay. So i have my g1 rooted. With froyo 2.2 cyanogen 6.1 ROM. As you may know, it doesn't come with google apps. So market isn't available. I've been looking all over the web. Trying each and everyone's market.apk and market.zip . All doesn't work. I tried normal install from a file manager. Nothing. Tried adb process. Pushing it. Still not working. Tried android command, still not working. And finally, your file, which i flashed. Still didn't work. All of them I got the same. When I open market, I just get a white blank, then after 5 seconds, goes back to the desktop screen. Any ideas to help me? Would really appreciate it.
Or I was thinking of doing this. Reflash the stock android 1.6 with root and then try the market. If it works, use nandroid back up. And then flash cyanogen 6.0 froyo 2.2 and restore the backup that i made with the market. DO you think that will work?
succesfully installed on my g1 cynogenmod but the market get fc when i try to download

[Q] Stock Rogers Canada ROM

Hello All,
I'm starting a new thread, because I am in a situation where I want to get my girlfriends phone back to stock so I can warranty it, and hopefully someone here will have the answer and people will have one place to look for putting their Roger's Samsung Captivate back to stock.
I'm hoping someone can tell everyone why we can't seem to get back to stock on these ROM's, here are the things I've tried:
Originally cleared everything rooted the phone through an update.zip, then put on the Clockworkmod Recovery and flashed Cognition v2.3b8, Trying to fix, battery life and lagging issues on her phone, (had a couple of random restarts the day before I flashed, so I was hoping it would fix that).
Then she started noticing the random restarts more often, so I tried:
clearing everything again through the recovery and tried restore from my backup to put things back, it looks like it extracted (or Installed) successfully then when it boots, it gets to the black, "Swipe" screen, then it freezes.
I tried to flash the Rogers_Stock.zip, same thing. Then I extracted the zip, and put it into the backup folder, hoping it will restore it like a normal restore, same thing.
So right now I'm stuck with a phone that says AT&T when it boots (I read one post on how to remove that) and cognition boot up.
Basically, I want to get this to look enough like stock to return.
I was thinking I can try to get rid of that AT&T popup, then flash the stock ROM, and say it just stopped booting for some reason. But then I still need to get rid of the Clockworkmod Recovery.
Wow that was a mouthful.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide for use Roger's users (or their significant others).

There are others like it too. Just don't try flashing the bootloader or sbl !

Gin's got you on the right path for sure. A couple more items for you:
This post should help with removing the AT&T bootup logo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849789
If you use Heimdall to flash the Rogers stock firmware that is in the post the Gin linked to then you will absolutely need to follow the instructions to use the Heimdall drivers for your captivate when it's connected or it won't see the device when you tell it to start. Like gin said, don't touch primary or secondary bootloader, leave those out and don't try to repartition it.
Restoring the stock firmware will remove the custom kernel that is installed with Cognition (at least it should) and so the Clockwork recovery should no longer be installed once the restore to stock is done. You can double-check once you are back to stock by powering off the phone and then hold both up and down volume + power, let the power button go after it restarts once and you see the I896 for the 2nd time. It should take you to the stock 2e recovery screen. If it does, you should be golden.

Wow, thanks all,
I used that method without the PIT file,
I just want to say thanks to everyone that offered help,
Goina try to send it for warranty now.
thanks again,

Won't boot after flashing DerTeufel'S [ROM] Jellybean [4.1.1]

Hello,
I tried searching for my problem in the forums but I didn't find my exact setup and don't want to brick my phone. (Well maybe it already is)
I had Cyanogenmod 7 for quite a while and tried the Nightlies for 9 some months ago. In the early days of my phone I used ODIN to flash the newest Stock firmwares and then used the chroot kernel to root my phone and install cwm. Since then I installed Cyanogenmod 7 and later Cyanogenmod 9 Nightlies with cwm recover and there was never a problem.
Today I tried the ROM from DerTeufel1980 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28819140
I flashed the rom, the addons, the superuser and google now fix. Then I flashed the kernel Devil3_1.0.0-Rc5_datadata_i9000_CFS_BLN_CMC_20120719.zip and fixed permissions. After that my phone wouldn't boot. The boot animation was the old standard android logo.
I managed to get into Devil Kernel Recovery and thought to try a reflash of just the ROM but when I try to "choose a zip" it always tells me
E:can't mount /sdcard/
After that I flashed the kernel with odin and now the phone seems to boot but veeeery slow and it has a ton of flickering the whole time. The bootanimation is the cyanogenmod 9 boot animation. I got into Devil Recovery and I still can't mount the sdcard. And it seems that it doesn't detect my sim card.
I hope you can help me.
Edit: Actually after rebooting several times the boot sped up and I could get into the ROM. I still can't mount the internal sdcard though and I have no phone functionality. It seems that my IMEI number is gone.
Hey
Downgrade your sgs to 2.3.6 valuepack using odin3...
Then root it and use it for a day atleast..
Then flash CM9 nightly..use that for a day too..
Then flash JB...not the same one u did earlier..
Instead Goto teamjellybean.noez.in (ad www.)
Find d latest version of jb and follow the instruction there..
Cheers

Thanks that's exactly what I have done and it worked.
I've seen a lot of folks saying that they might have bricked their phones when some issue occured while flashing a new rom.
Personally whenever I face issues, I just goto the Download mode and Flash a GB rom and then move my way up (GB --> ICS --> JB).
As long as you can go into Download mode, shouldnt be a problem
Fwiw, I lost my IMEI for the first time trying out the JBs. Not sure if it was Slim or DerTeufel's. I ended up with the kind that allows you to connect to your mobile provider, a fake but working IMEI. But when I saw that I tried to go to GB and it didn't come back automagically. And the IMEI was totally wiped so I couldn't even register on the network. Ended up getting to ICS and only then did Root Browser let me write to the efs folder.
Lesson, in short: make a backup zip of your efs folder (to preserve permissions) and double back it up using Nitrality from the Play store.
Glad you got yours back, too.

OK, so I'm *definitely* a crappy speed-reader, because I missed this part about waiting on each version. What does the waiting do? I'm now wondering if that means I need to use the phone and, with the restored /efs folder, sometimes later /dev/block/stl3 will repopulate itself with the proper info.
Hey
I asked to wait on roms coz it can just make a few things working...like data..if it doesnt work on 1 rom it would not (probably) work on the next update..(personal experience)..
Cheers
If my post helped, don't mind hitting the Thanks button..
