problems get cell reception - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lately I'm noticing that my x1a is struggling to connect for a cell signal whereas I don't ever remember it being a problem. Any suggestions for what I can look for or try to isolate the issue?
I know my battery isn't lasting as long but it still lasts an active 8 hours.
I've had my sim card forever... could that be a problem, could the network be upgraded?

who is your provider, lately some providers have updated access information.
what version of sim card do you have if it is an older series some of the updated information may not be recorded properly.

My provider is Cincinnati Bell. How do I find out the version? Or maybe I should just take it to them then and ask?

dropped calls

Does anyone have the same problems with the breeze that when you make a call it can drop it with no warning show "No service" and suddenly get it back straight away?
i have radio 1.38 installed, using a ORange UK 3G PAYG sim in a full coverage 2G area and 1-2 bars 3G area.
i have tried to set the thing to GSM only and 3G only but this doesn't solve it. has anyone......anyone out there figured a way to sort this?
or does anyone know of the possibility of getting a replacement from HTC that works?
cheers to anyone who can help
Dan
Same problem here, with Orange also, although on contract with them.
Please let me know if you find a solution. I emailed HTC, which I already know you have done, and you have had a replacement handset. This is not a good start for me
I had the best luck with my Sony Ericsson K610i. It was the best 3G Bluetooth Modem ever.. shame no Exchange ActiveSync/DirectPush
I have exactly same problem. Phone calls are dropped with no services message. And I have to restart phone at least once a week because my phone will fail to find any network. After reboot it works fine for a while. I have latest firmware with 1.38 radio. Phone is from O2 CZ.
Hi guys,
did you try to switch from 2G and 3G connection to 2G only? I assume this problem is caused by the network coverage while the Breeze is switching from 3G to 2G and vice versa. Me and some friends (Vodafone and T-Mobil) didn't discover these kind of problems.....
Cheers
Michael
Yes, I did it. But I still have to restart phone every week because phone lost signal.
I'm thinking about to flashing newer radio.
Hmm, we are using this version: "MTeoR_Upgrade_1.34.251.1_1.38.00.10_EUR_SHIP.exe" and it works well......

vario 3 not receiving half the calls, any ideas??

Hi guys,
Tried searching for a similar problem but didn't find anything.
I have had it changed twice now, so it could be a problem with the current software.
I am finding that I am missing most of my calls, and they are going straight through to voicemail, despite having full reception.
This is not happening with the Sim card in any other phone, just with the Vario 3.
This is a T- Mobile UK handset
has anyone had a similar problem? I'm thinking if they are just replacing it again then I may have to try a different handset.
It's very disruptive for work and social purposes when callers are getting straight to voicemail most of the time.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated
thanks.
Hi, The problem may be with the 3G network, I had a similar problem and was told to change the network settings to standard GPRS settings through the network settings menu on the vario iii.
This did solve the problem of calls not coming through. I changed settings back to 3G a couple of days later and all seemed to be working again.
I think that the problem lies with the 3G network as I was advised by someone I know who works for T-mobile UK that T-mobile are still experimenting with 3G and certain areas may work better than other areas due to problems with the network at certain times.
Were the other phones that you used your sim in on 3g or standard gprs settings?

Thanks for the response.
I have put it on GPRS which seems to have helped.
It's just defeating the purpose of web and walk.
My previous phone was the vario 2 which to my memory worked fine, although I did put the latest radio version etc on it via this site.
They are sending a repair bag for me to post over to them the handset, but I imagine they don't have any updated software to stick on it or radio.

SGS Captivate Got Signal. Can't Use Network

So almost two months of owning my Captivate that I got from Rogers (BNIB from Kijiji) and I noticed that at a certain area in my school, I have 3/5 bars of signal yet I can't seem to text/call and use the network. Is this a network problem or phone problem? Or can it also be my SIM? My SIM card is pretty old. However everything was fine when I use my Sony Ericsson W715 in the same area.
I should add that my friends on the same network beside me, they can text/call fine, which leads me to believe that this is a phone problem. A poster over at Howard Forums suggested network congestion, but it seems impossible because everyone else can use their phone fine.
I've tried different modems too, but it doesn't help. It's like my Captivate doesn't want to work at certain areas of my school.
A couple of people are getting the same problem as well where the phone reports good signal, but they can't use the network at certain locations. We're starting to think that this is a phone problem...

I noticed this same issue in fringe areas. I have ATT and in southern Utah they are quite weak. I wonder if the bars/signal are actually from another provider like T-Mobile or some off brand like alltel or something. Utah has a bunch of small providers in rural areas.
Specifically in my case I go up in the mountains at Brianhead Ski resort and i get 2 or 3 bars yet I cannot send texts or call. Verizon has coverage there and I heard rumor T-mobile had a microcell or something on one of the lodges.
Could the signal be from another provider that ATT doesnt have an agreement with? Or in the OP's case some provider besides his own?
That's highly unlikely though, the idea of my phone roaming onto another network. It'd show if I'm not on the Rogers network.
Plus, a lot of people use Rogers, such as my friends who are able to make calls and send texts when they are next to me while I can't at school.
Just an update. Switched to a new SIM card, no go. Got a reconditioned Captivate, still got the same problem. As always, everyone else around me could send and receive text messages fine.
Same thing happened to me twice today with the reconditioned Captivate, at two different locations. As usual, it happened to me at Ted Rogers School of Management on the 8th floor where it showed I had 3 bars and a 3G connection. However when I tried to send a SMS, make a call, or browse the web, nothing worked. Everyone else around me was fine though, so I still can't determine whether it is a network or phone problem. I already switched the SIM out for a new one too.
The 2nd time it happened to me today was just outside of the subway station. Keyword is outside. I wasn't underground. I had full bars, but again I couldn't use the network.

I still think it that in some cases our phones pick up out of network signals and show great signal strenght.
Maybe not in your case since others are working fine around you, unless they are bone stock maybe, and you have obviously improved your phone.
I did a bunch of expeirmentation with my phone, flashing different modems and such, trying to get an ATT signal at Brianhead Ski resort in Utah.
I could get the phone to show great signal on the bars and in settings/about phone/status but the service state and network would say unknown or unavailable, somthing like that. (maybe check those when you cant get out?)
I have since given up and reflashed so many times I dont remember which modem worked to give me good signal of networks I couldnt use.
I do know it was frustating as hell to have full bars and be unable to call or send texts.

Thanks for your insight. The other people around me have other phones, such as Blackberry, Samsung Wave, etc. I even tested it with my old Sony Ericsson W715 and my friend's Samsung Wave at pretty much the same location (a feet or two away from me) when I can't use the network, and everything is fine so it most likely is a phone problem.
When it shows I have signal, it also shows the service state, like I'm on the Fido network and such.

[SOLVED] Poor reception with sim card, perfect without

I purchased an unlocked I9305T a few days ago to use on Telstra and am having all sorts of reception problems even though we're fairly close to a tower. My S2 will usually get -80 dbm and above whereas the S3 was often sitting at -100 or less. Sometimes mobile data works and other times it drops out constantly or won't connect at all.
Anyway I was ready to return the phone today when I noticed that without a sim inserted, it's getting better 3G reception than the S2. That would rule out any antenna or modem problems wouldn't it? Does this mean the sim card slot might be faulty? I doubt it's the sim card itself as I've got it in the S2 currently and it's working fine.
EDIT: Please excuse the dumb stuff above. Don't know why I thought signal strength meant anything without a sim. I went and got a brand new sim and it's now working perfectly.

[Q] Xperia Z randomly without 3G access (but with 2G access). Hardware or software?

Hi guys!
Around 2 months ago I started having some issues when connected to the 3G network. Most of the times, it didn't transfer at all and my network icon was with the "!" sign.. I was on PAC LP and I blamed it (or some software-related cause). However, if I marked "Use only 2G networks", it did work...
I flashed the phone yesterday. A clean, fresh and quite deep install (wipes, .228 FTF, new kernel, new ROM -eXistenZ-, etc etc). The surprise was that I still have it... If I try to connect to 3G networks I might get a couple of seconds of connection, but then it just disconnects and stays like that until I change back to 2G networks... Just in case I reflashed again, same procedure, and it's still there, even on stock .228...
I bought the phone 2 years ago (in Europe, that's why I can't use LTE here), and never had a problem like this. Of course, I'm at the same place with 3G coverage (other phones do work), I've already tried different APNs, providers, etc, so I hope not, but I'm starting to think this could be related to a hardware issue...
Does anyone have an idea? Is there any software part that is not changed during a flash and could be responsible? Or maybe how to rule out hardware or software issues? This happened while I was on PAC LP, stock .228 and eXistenZ...
Thanks in advance!
It could be many factors involved - one of them could be that the operator you are currently connected (ex. Vodafone, At&t) maybe changed all their antennas in your area from 3g to 4g, and that would result in your lack of connecting to 3g.
I once changed my operator because it had better offer and then I regretted it since the connectivity was worse with the second operator and would constantly switch from 2g to 3g to 4g, all this with a major impact on battery life.
It could be also hardware related, but I wouldn't bet on it. Try checking with another phone with the same sim in the same areas to get an idea what it might be.

Hi aaronkatrini.
Thanks for your answer! However, it's not my operator's fault:
- All other phones in the same area do work.
- Other operators (other SIM cards) in my phone have the same issue, so I guess it's related to my phone, software or hardware...
I haven't checked yet another phone with my SIM card, I could try that to rule completely out the SIM card/operator's fault.
Thanks again!
