I am on the old $39.99 ATT plan the one that does not have 3G and my with an old “blue” SIM card. I have been using Sony S710a for the past two years which in fact worked fine. A week ago I have obtained ATT Tilt (HTC 8925), unlocked it so that it would read my card and started using it.
Here is the problem that I can’t solve>
Sometimes my phone loses service, completely, and I cannot reconnect to ATT Service. I have tried to find a pattern but so far I am clueless of what might be causing it.
According to my observation:
1. It has been happening in certain neighborhoods.
2. When I do find service and connect to it shows E and then switches to 3G
3. When my phone starts to show 3G it loses connection.
This phenomenon happens only from time to time. Other times I have 3G icon and everythign is fine. I have tried T-mobile card in it and there is no problem. It connects to T-mobile service and has all bars. Thereafter I have put my card into an unlocked Nokia 6300 and my ATT connection works fine. The only thing I can blame is 3G.
Please if anyone knows what this, why its happening and how I can avoid this issue let me know. Thank you.
it looks like I have got a solution...
Im not sure yet, but so far I have installed an application that supposed to keep me away from [3G]. The application that I have installed is Bandswitch. So far it only shows [E] . I have to travel to those areas where I had no service to be sure that this program works. Ill keep you updated on this issue.
go get a new sim card. ATT and Cingular towers were different so some older sim cards have trouble connecting to some towers. its only something like 15 bucks.
when i went to the ATT storeto get my tilt, even though i already had a 64k sim they still upgraded the sim (for free seince i was about to pay 400 bucks).
Its your sim card
The old sim cards don't have enough memory. Get a new one with the 3g logo on it. You should probably upgrade your service too. Or you'll get a big surprise when your bill comes.
I have the same problem here in germany with the O2 3G Network... My phone has a GPRS Connection and when the 3G Icon appears there is a total loss of connection for like 10 seconds and its back to GPRS again... End of the story (like i assumed and wrote to O2 ;P) my SIM Card is too old, new one on the way Should work for you as well, like all the other posters before me claimed
Edit: Oh and it didn't cost me one buck, all inclusive service because i didn't lose or broke my SIM Card. When it is too old to be able to allow you to use your full contract properties, i guess they pretty much have to send you a new new SIM card for free. At least here it works this way
Thank you...
The problem is that I dont have a contract and the only way for them to upgrade my sim to 3G is when i sign up. Curently I have 1000 min, nights and weekends from 7pm, free mobile to mobile, free long distance and free incoming SMS. Its highly unlikely that any one of you would give that up and pay more money for less minutes and less services. Right? Thank you. at this point i think im fine with what I have got, in addition to not needing 3G at all. by the way, i think that this program Bandswitch is doing a good job keeping me of 3G. Thank you.

I never had to 'upgrade' my sim to 3G, nor sign a new contract. I just took my old GSM SE phone in to ask about service, and they asked if I would like a sim swap to the latest.. Sure, done.
Now works fine with the Kaiser, and never did any form of 3G 'upgrade'.

Were you part of the old ATT Blue network? Cingular actually started giving out 3g cards in early 2006 in my area. I got one with my 8125 where they FIRST came out. So it's possible if you've gotten a phone since then and now that your card is already 3g...

You're right, I think it may be important to be on the 'orange network' because 3G never existed for the old at&t wireless 'blue'.
I was always part Cingular, and did go through the free-sim upgrade, but got another one when I just walked in after that.
Well I'm in malaysia, Using Maxis 3G network. I also having problem same symptoms like you guys. What do i realize sometime it give my device freeze for sometime. But the freeze just like for few second. And what do i realize when 3G appear our phone signal become weak. From full bar drop to 2 or 1 bar.
Did u guys having this issue too?
My simcard is 128k if im not mistake.
See this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335074
Most likely the same problem. RMA ahead.
Try this on your phone settings (dialer --> menu --> options) on the network tab is network selection set to automatic? i was experimenting with my phone to see if i could get a better signal and set it to manual and choose my network but when im no a 3G connection its called 3G T-mobile and when not its just called T-mobile and on the manual list its just called T-Mobile so each time i got a 3G connection it would lose signal completely and start searching for i think T-mobile not 3G T-mobile the moment i set it back to Auto and soft-reset it worked fine again.
my phone did this at first, and all i had to do was get a new SIM. they didn't charge me a dime for it at the att store, but if they ask just tell them your phone won't connect and that it's a problem with your SIM
I have the same problem and have a new phone on the way. I already have a 3G sim card.
When you call, they'll probably make you hard reset your phone. Just a heads up.
Basically, my N1 when on stock worked perfectly with 3g, yes sometimes it was a bit patchy but it worked. I am using my old blackberry sim (UK), with the internet converted from bberry internet to normal.
Everything was going fine until I put my brother's orange sim in my phone (UK) [he also has a stock nexus, although at the time i was on 5.0.0.3 CM] to see if it was just his phone which had a 3g issue. I never managed to pick up 3g while his sim was in my phone, even though 2 blackberry bolds sitting next to it with orange sims in had perfect 3g.
ANYWAY THATS NOT THE ISSUE.
After replacing my sim in my phone, Ive never since had 3g, ever, even on routes I know the signal is immense.
What I want to know is 1) what would swapping sims have done to the phone, 2) what I can do to possibly reverse it so I can enjoy my 3g again
CM .6
Desire CAM + OC/UV
Cheers
I haven't had this same problem but if I were you I would go to your carrier and get a replacement SIM card. The last time I had a weird issue like this I replaced my SIM and all of a sudden I got pure 3G signals everywhere where I hadn't before. If you get the new SIM and it still doesn't work, try wiping and install a completely different ROM (perferably stock) and see what happens.
Hope this helps!

But before I put my brothers sim in my phone, my sim worked perfectly fine, so I was thinking it was more likely to be phone than my sim?
Anyone have any ideas?
his sim seems to have disabled 3g somehow in your phone, though I've never heard me that before. have you gone into the info menu and seen if your 3g is still enabled? *#*#4636#*#* on your dialpad.
WHOOPs, yeah I had it off [while we were testing etc] and sort of forgot :/ Which setting is it meant to be on, GSM/CDMA auto?
you want it to be on WCDMA Preferred.
I've set it correctly now, and am getting 'H'. I didn't actually realise that it is a type of 3g network, however I am SURE It used to say '3g'. UK O2 if it makes a difference.
well H stands for HSDPA which is what some ROMs show. so have you flashed to a different custom ROM? either way you are getting correct high speed network, so no worries. my nexus only says 3G even when i'm on HSDPA.

Hey guys,
Picked up a tmobile N6 today and successfully activated it on VZW. Had to cut my S4 simcard to fit. Everything seems to be working well (other than voice and data at the same time nbd) except LTE speeds are painfully slow. I'm getting a lot of time outs while loading play store, etc.
Any ideas how to fix this issue? I am in an area with a strong LTE signal. WIFI speeds are normal.
Don't tell me this. I just ordered the T-Mobile unlocked version for my Verizon line. I already have a nano Sim because of my current device. Maybe its something to do with the mobile data settings? Have u checked ur settings?
Maybe its your sim card?
I trimmed my Sim card as well and have no issues. I did have the Sim card in before the first power up though. Maybe a factory reset.. Bought mine from Google though.

sounds like your local providers issue today. 1. you are connected to verizon. 2, you are receiving data. so your connection is actually fine. the issue is with your local data speeds. try calling your provider and asking them whats up, if it is not the way your network is normally. they could just be having an issue today.
Update:
Not having the issue anymore. Just had to do a couple restart and the speed issue was resolved. I was thinking maybe a network issue but my wife's S4 wasn't experiencing the same problem.
Hi Guys,
I'm using Airtel India network (karnataka)
I'm unable to get 3g connectivity from past 6 days and as we all know 4g is not supported in Nexus 6.
Only 2g is getting connected and surprisingly my sim card is working fine with 3g network with other handsets i checked.
I have tried contacting airtel several times and have not got any response apart from stating that everything is fine at their end.
I just wanna know if this a handset problem or the network issue ?? and how to fix it
Does anybody else facing same issue?
Just to clarify something, the Nexus 6 does have 4G. It displays "LTE" on the signal strength meter when 4G is connected.
What steps have you taken to diagnose the problem? We have no way of knowing whether the handset has gone bad or the network is having problems without some work from you. For instance, have you tried a new SIM? Have you checked your APN? Done a factory reset?
Well my Nexus 6 didnt pick up signal from my sim card. Sim card is working in other phone so visited the service centre and they inserted another sim and the signal was not picked either. Now the phone is in service centre.
Now for the surprise part!!!!
the other phone which i inserted my sim card is a new box piece of MI redmi Note 3 which worked fine until now. Now i'm getting 3G symbol in this phone as well and nothing is getting connected. lost LTE connection and not getting connected.
LTE never worked in my Nexus 6 and was not aware i could use 4g in Nexus 6 since i am using 4G enabled sim and never got LTE connectivity (PS i stay in India).
I'm lost now.
Your SIM could be damaged. It's not common, but SIM cards do fail. I had it happen on another device and lost voice and data until I could get a new SIM. Fortunately for me the SIM didn't damage the equipment, which again isn't common, but possible.
The fact your new device is exhibiting the same symptoms as your Nexus and only doing so after inserting the SIM leads to one inescapable fact: your SIM is damaged. When your Nexus is returned to you, get a new SIM.
Nexus 6 does support LTE in India through 1800 MHz Band, ie Idea and Vodafone.
Airtel is using 2300 MHz which is not supported by the Nexus 6, that's why you are not able to latch on to Airtel LTE.
Alright, this is my first post over here in XDA, and I'm honestly don't know what forum to post on. Since this problem kinda started in my Galaxy Note 5, might as well take a shot in the dark and post it here!
Before, my Galaxy Note 5 Duos (N9208) was transmitting data back and forth flawlessly. One with 4G and another with H+ connectivity. Then, a few months ago, my phone's data suddenly became unusable! It suddenly froze up and I'm not capable of browsing the Web.
A few days passed, the data mostly came back to normal except for one key point. That is the fact that it can only access the internet when the icon beside the coverage is displaying "H+". Whenever it displays H, it won't work and it would be as if there's not Internet connection at all even when I'm in a place with full coverage. 4G is no different, the data came to a crawl to the point it would be plain unusable.
Thinking that something had gone terribly wrong, I sent my phone to the Samsung Service Center to check on the condition of the phone. They said it was fine, and the connections are all working fine. This got me thinking that my sim card(s) were the one at fault here. So I bought another sim card for my Note, and same result, the Internet of this sim also only connects at H+, not H nor 4G.
I then transferred one of my sim card to my spare Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which is itself not 4G capable so that's out of the question. But one of the symptoms from my Note 5 emerged, the Internet won't connect if it displays H, not H+. This made me think, is my phone infected with a virus and transferred itself to my new sim via sim infection?
TL;DR
- Galaxy Note 5 started having problems
- I sent Note for repairs but they said everything is OK
- I bought new simcard but still the same result
- I transfer one of the sim that was in my Note to my Z Ultra, same problems show up.
- I suspect a virus lurking on the cards
More information
- Currently using Note 5 ( N9208), Southeast Asia ( more specifically Malaysia) region.
- Providers are Maxis and DiGi.
- Spare phone is an C6833 Z Ultra
