Basically, my N1 when on stock worked perfectly with 3g, yes sometimes it was a bit patchy but it worked. I am using my old blackberry sim (UK), with the internet converted from bberry internet to normal.
Everything was going fine until I put my brother's orange sim in my phone (UK) [he also has a stock nexus, although at the time i was on 5.0.0.3 CM] to see if it was just his phone which had a 3g issue. I never managed to pick up 3g while his sim was in my phone, even though 2 blackberry bolds sitting next to it with orange sims in had perfect 3g.
ANYWAY THATS NOT THE ISSUE.
After replacing my sim in my phone, Ive never since had 3g, ever, even on routes I know the signal is immense.
What I want to know is 1) what would swapping sims have done to the phone, 2) what I can do to possibly reverse it so I can enjoy my 3g again
CM .6
Desire CAM + OC/UV
Cheers
I haven't had this same problem but if I were you I would go to your carrier and get a replacement SIM card. The last time I had a weird issue like this I replaced my SIM and all of a sudden I got pure 3G signals everywhere where I hadn't before. If you get the new SIM and it still doesn't work, try wiping and install a completely different ROM (perferably stock) and see what happens.
Hope this helps!

But before I put my brothers sim in my phone, my sim worked perfectly fine, so I was thinking it was more likely to be phone than my sim?
Anyone have any ideas?
his sim seems to have disabled 3g somehow in your phone, though I've never heard me that before. have you gone into the info menu and seen if your 3g is still enabled? *#*#4636#*#* on your dialpad.
WHOOPs, yeah I had it off [while we were testing etc] and sort of forgot :/ Which setting is it meant to be on, GSM/CDMA auto?
you want it to be on WCDMA Preferred.
I've set it correctly now, and am getting 'H'. I didn't actually realise that it is a type of 3g network, however I am SURE It used to say '3g'. UK O2 if it makes a difference.
well H stands for HSDPA which is what some ROMs show. so have you flashed to a different custom ROM? either way you are getting correct high speed network, so no worries. my nexus only says 3G even when i'm on HSDPA.

My city just got 3g yesterday and I am having a big problem. I cannot connect
to the network at all when 3g is turned on. Shows 3g is connected..but I can't make any calls, or get on the web or even text message. After a min or so, it shows I am not connected to anything then it will do it all again. If I turn on only use 2g, I have no problems and I connect with Edge. I have 3 other friends who have g1's, one is rooted liked myself and no one has any problems. Any Ideas? I was originally using dwang 1.14 rom, but changed to cyanogen 4.2.8.1 and it doesn't make a difference.

i had a problem like urs when 3g was first introduced in my city..the problem was just the area i was in and the young 3g network.. 3g worked other place but not around my house, eventhough i got reception.. so i suggest, first try the 3g somewhere closer to downtown or something and see if problem still presists.
Yea, I tried that. I was at work with the three other guys who have a g1 and they all had no problem with 3g. But, me on the other hand just couldn't connect for anything. It would show connected to 3g, but I couldn't place a call..send a text or get on the web...that after a few seconds would show no service at all...strange.
I just tried reinstalling the radio, but still didn't fix it.
it might be the sim i had the same problem they just gave me a new one at the tmobile store
Ok, got a different sim card and I am having the same problem. Any other ideas.
contact your carrier say 3g is not registering to your phone, and the may tell you how to set the network back up.. my friend had the same problem with his rooted g1, he called tmobile they said its not set right.. all he said his phone came with special optional capabilites.. and the tellar said.. "can you do that to my phone"

try putting ur sim in another g1 i dunno if you have to register it or not though and see if you can make calls that way with 3g it might be just some setting on the phone or something
hello every body
i have this problem with my nexus one when i am connected to 3g service (umts, hsdpa,Etc'). i can't make calls or receive any calls, i can't use the internet (data) or get sms and Etc'. but i have full bars reception. when i check the vi in setting to "use only 2g" the phone work great.
i tried everything downgrade/upgrade roms, radios. i tried to go back to my first backup and even do PASSIMG but nothing help i googled it every where but nothing
please some one can help???
without 3g the smartphone is useless
thanks,
shushkis
What network you on? I would at least see how old the sim card is.
Lots of time if you have an older sim card it just can't handle a newer system.
I am connected through Orange IL
and i tried switching sims even with other networks.
and more the phone worked fine at the beginning it just happened i remember i switch to one of CY roms and it happened
Have you tried a full wipe and reinstall the rom?
yes of course i tried customized roms and stock roms but nothing helped
I would check your apn settings...
apn connected to taking or getting calls?
i thought it's just for internet connection
Its just a guess.
If its a problem on multiple ROMs, its likely to be either hardware or settings. Settings are cheaper and easier to test, and that's the only setting I can think of...?
Of course, doing a full wipe (including system), installing a new ROM, and testing before you restore any apps and settings may be another way to test, but since the apn settings are pre-baked into most ROMs, it wouldn't rule our the apn...?
OK I tried to put apn settings and it didnt help
you say hardware?
but when I check in settings "use only 2g" the transceiver works great .
maybe the nexus have two transceiver one for 2g and one for 3g?
seems un-logical
No there are two radios one for 3g and one for 2g because 2g is for calls and 3g for data but when 3G is unavailable the phone will use the 2g for the data.
The Same Trouble
shushkis,
I have the same trouble, my 3G connection works so bad, but if I use only 2g connection, all works good... I have no idea what happend with my N1. I have a N1 for 3G 850 (AT&T) model.
Thanks for advantage.
So maybe the problem is the hardware? if the N1 have two inidvidul transcivers?
I have also the same problem. I've tried many different roms and radios. I use 900/2100 3G. What's strang is that 3G works perfectly at home, but when moving to another tower I get emergency calls only warning. 2g works fine.
I just started having 3G issues at home. With 3G on the phone reboots like once an hour, but on 2G I've gone days without a reboot. My 3G signal is not the best at home, but I don't know why that would make the phone reboot. I'm on T-Mo USA.

The one I'm using is only a couple months old, and it works well in my Desire HD, and my Moto Defy. It's only the N1, but I guess maybe it could be that. I'll look into more.
If it's only a few months old, then it may nor be the SIM that is the problem. I suggested it because a number of T-Mo users were having similar problems after a recent network upgrade, and a new SIM seems to fix the issue for most...
So I've had this phone for almost a week now and I used to he able to get 4g LTE. But ever since I rooted it, I no longer get more than 3g. I now have bananacakes Holiraider 1.6 but I still don't get any higher than 3g. So my question is how do I get 4g and 4g lte. Oh and if anyone is using that custom Rom, is it possible to get faster than 1512? In his thread it shows you can clock it to 1566. Thanks a bunch I'm kinda new to this!
try dialing *#*#4636#*#* and see what your modem is set to, it should be GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto
you also may have an APN issue, verifiy that your APN is correct, perhaps contact your carrier for the correct APN settings for you phone and plan.
Well I'm now running a custom ROM. The apn is the same as other users and it does say the above. And yes I am in a 4G LTE area
Sent from my HTC Raider X710e using XDA App
Try doing the above and change to LTE only.
Then once you have 4G change it back. It should stay on 4G. I had to do this to get 4G on official rom.
Ok I just tried that but it wouldn't let me to switch it to LTE only. When I did, it switched it back to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto. I'm just gonna relock my phone and set it back to the original stock rom and format my phone (yes I have the apps and stuff backed up). Because my actual mobile connection fluctuates on and off as well
the phone should be locked into the GSM/WCDMA/LTE setting. If you try to change it from that setting it just returns back. The phone will get instructions from the carrier's base station to tell it whether to be on LTE or just 4G/3G. Using *#*#4636#*#* under phone information, what is listed as the Network type?

It is locked in GSM/WCDM/LTE auto.
above that option it should tell you the network type. it is about half way between the "run ping test" button and the "Set Preferred Network type" option. Need to know what it says there.
Oh ok I see what you mean, it says HSDPA
make sure that you are in a active LTE area. toggle the radio off and on. the network type should change to LTE if it is available. remember that if you make a phone call your phone will drop back to just 4g/3g and it might take a second for it to switch back to LTE.
I live in Los Angeles so I'm like in the center of the LTE center in Southern California. But for some reason my phone won't get anything higher than 3G, and my actual cellphone reception toggles on and off randomly too.
It worked before. For the first 3 days atleast. And now all of the sudden it wouldn't work, so I rooted it and installed a custom ROM
Try one of WildChilds custom ROMS. LTE works on both and they're tailored to US users.

if the problem arised before you rooted and rom'd the phone I doubt the rom is the problem. there is always the chance that you have a bad radio.

That's what I'm thinking... What would I do about this?
i would verify your sim with another 4gLTE phone and vice versa.
Hrm... So it could be a Sim card problem eh? Unfortunately there are no other LTE devices for me to get a hold of... Would this be the only way?
it could be. i hope you have pulled battery/sim and then rebooted already. you can verify your phone with a known good sim and verify your sim with a known good phone. I would try your local at&t store. they might be able to help.

I have done it many times . Yeah I'm actually going to head over to the at&t store in a few minutes, I'll keep you posted. Thank you so much for your help! rft3ch!
I will be replacing my phone. I replaced the sim card and that wasn't the problem . The rep said that someone else came in with the same problem as well.
For the last weeks.. I have been trying to get this phone working with T-Mobile..I had unlock the sim card and now running badboyz 4.3 rom. 1.3
After unlocking the sim card and setting up the apn, selected T-Mobile from the available networks and it will connect. But when I go to work, I will lose signal every few block, and need to search for available network again and wait to select t mobile again.
I had try to use the t mobile sim card on my old phone and everything will works fine with no signal lost.
Can anyone please HELP!... I been searching and looking for an answer for more than 2 weeks..but no resolve.....
Thanks

This is probably because T-mob covers only particular places the frequencies this phone uses http://theunlockr.com/2013/07/05/htc-one-sprint-specs/ vs t-mob https://t-mobile.jive-mobile.com/#jive-document?content=/api/core/v2/documents/4988

Is there any solution for this problem ?
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem ? (different rom or radio...etc..) Or I have to give up the phone... Cause it is too much headache to "searching for network" all the time and miss all the call with no service on the phone without knowing..
Thanks

well, I am not an expert on the tmobiles network, but going by what lazybozz, said, I seem to remember tmobile using different bands than the other carriers, so what you may be experiencing, is the phone being in the vicinity of multiple towers, but not all of them are within the band that the phone supports. So its like the phone doesnt even see those towers. On a side note, this issue caused alot of chaos for those who unlocked iphones about 3 years ago, they could use EDGE on tmobiles network but not 3G, so i assume this is a similar situation. So long story short, yeah you probably cant fix the problem, unless you get a quad band phone. I could be wrong, but it does sound like a logical reason for the issue you are having.
as elvisypi said above, Its the freq that T-mobile operates on in that area. If your getting T-mobile at all in the states then you have already flashed a radio. However flashing any other radio is not going to give you the freq that tmobile uses, Its not a software limitation its a physical hardware limitation.
Thanks for your reply, do you know any app out there that monitor and alarm you when the network or signal is lost ? That works with 4.3 ?That way at least you know the phone is offline ... some of the apps I tried is anything at all ...
Thanks
Have you tried an app like tasker? Its essentially an automation app. It isnt jist for your use. Its for many different functions. Jist look on the app store for tasker. That might help

i dont fully understand your explanation. are you saying it does the same thing when you put the sim in a n5?
if that is true, i would suggest getting a new sim.
I mean I have internet ,I am connected on network, but icon looks as no internet or network, this problem I have it and on N5,when I go to settings and click data off and back it again the icon show normally and show I am on H network, but just for 5-10 min.,

Welcome to the Nexus 6's absolutely horrible reception. This phone has got to be the worst phone for reception.
Let me guess it bounced back and forth between H+, H, 3G, 4G, LTE, and "!". I've been dealing with it for several months now. T-Mobile has even warranty replaced my Nexus 6 twice and still not better. I keep telling them its not the phone its a software issue. That I believe has something to do with Project fi. Seems as if the software to run project fi is causing the phone to gain then lose signal over and over. It's like its trying to jump to the best possible tower for better reception , like Project fi does.
All I know is Google and moto need to get their act together and address this issue. There are way to many complaints on this issue but no one seems to care about speaking up on the issue much less fix it.
Thanks for your reply, I will try to change new sim card, because this problem I have it and on nexus 5 with micro sim,but I cut my micro to nano sim,but today i got new nano sim,and hope the problem will solve
